Am I the only one who saw this song as a message about when you want too much but you don't want to have such deep desires,so you don't get hurt in the end. Frank keeps convincing himself that he just want a dog, and nothing else, but then he catches himself speaking about his family and future and kids and talents and joyful moments. This is my favorite song of the album.

I got something similar out of it, what I was understanding was that he is afraid of the commitment of having a full on family so he just goes back to just wanting a dog or tricking himself into only wanting a dog

I really can't get enough of this song. And when it climaxes I always get choked up. I have a dog and I love him so much. But I would love a house on a street and I would love a husband that WANTS to hear about my day and a kid. I feel the desperation in his voice. I relate to that. I'm 31 And feel like these goals were so simple for others but maybe they just aren't in the cards for me.

I've been through some shit as I'm sure everyone has. I had brain surgery when I was 9 for a malformation of veins that ruptured. I had another malformation but they told me it was no longer visible on the newer scans. I was told by the surgeon that if the malformation was still there that it should rupture before I turned 21. We couldn't afford to have anymore scans to verify so I spent my teens unable to picture a future because I was terrified that one day I would fall asleep and never wake up again. This led to a LOT of fucked up situations.
I'm 23 now and 2 weeks ago I received my MRI results back after finally getting the courage to have another scan. The malformation has grown a lot and must be removed before it ruptures. Not only that, but I found out that with the first surgery they had to cut out the majority of my occipital lobe and it's a miracle I'm not blind. I have this terrible gut feeling that I am running out of time even though everyone says it will be ok. The nurse chokes up every time she asks me if I'm alright and no one will look me in the eye.
I've been listening to this song on repeat ever since those results. I bought my ticket for Hobo Johnson's tour and I was adamant with my surgeon that I will not let them operate until after the show just in case... Well, I'm not sure. I'm not even sure why I'm writing this all out. I can't even tell most of my friends about it. I just really love this song because for so long I wouldn't allow myself to think about a future and now I just... I really want a dog.

this song - to me - is about maladaptive daydreaming, and the struggle to temper it. it’s about the tendency for unhappy people to escape to a fantasy land, but try their best to ground themselves, live in the moment, and manage their desires. it really speaks to me on a spiritual level. the ending almost makes me well up with tears.

When you played this at Reading, and messed up the word 4/5 times in a row was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. Everyone in that tent was cheering you on despite how frustrated you were, you brought love with you to Reading festival that Friday. Don't know if you'll actually see this or not, but I want you to know this song actually changed the course of my life. At the end of 2019 I had nothing going for me. I was 20 with no discernable skills, job, car, or that many friends. On January 1st I listened to this song for the first time, and more than any other time in my life, I realized I have actual hopes and dreams and goals. I can't say for sure what your intended message for this song was, but frankly (punintended), it changed my life. Now I'm pursuing a career in music, my actual passion. Its been 8 months and we're already getting an album on Spotify. I just want you to know that this song changed who I am and taught me to dream!

I love this song because it starts out with a simple request - wanting a dog, but he turns that into what he wants in life and wanting to happy and have a good life, but that's hidden behind just the simple "I really just want a dog" and I love how poetic everything Frank writes is, it's beautiful
This song is literally one of the greatest masterpieces of our generation. I wrote a 6 page paper on this song senior year of high school for AP lit, and now here I am, a year and a half later, and this song gives me the same chills as it always did. Hobo Johnson is literally a modern Shakespeare and it’s beautiful

I don't know if anyone will ever read that and i just sound like a random teenager on the internet but i used to genuinely scream my lungs out in the woods near my house singing this song last year when i was extremely depressed and confused and i just wanted to say this song really helped me find stuff to look forward to and im extremely thankful to feel like i can finally make decisions that will impact my life again because of it so thanks a lot Frank this actually really helps, will forever be one of my favorites.
Hopefully I'll still want to make music when I'm more stable because I really wanna impact people the way the way this kind of thing has impacted me.

I save this very special song for when I'm down in the dumps. I've always interpreted the 'dog' as a sense/feeling of belonging. The 'dog' could mean something very different to him but at its foundation, I too want to fulfill my pursuit of happiness in my own way. Regardless of your interests, looks, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, etc., everyone is searching for their 'dog'. Everyone should pursue their dreams with the support of their loved ones, no matter how wild or 'out of left field' it is because everyone's 'dog' is different.
My 'dog': I feel like I was put on this earth to contribute within an MLB scouting department and donate my free time and off-seasons towards wildlife conservation efforts.
My reality: I work a corporate job that has nothing to do with either of my passions. I leave work every day feeling a little out of place.

I love how many ways there are to interpret his songs. They're all very obviously about very specific things to him but with all the feeling and force he puts into his music, all of these people take it and relate it to their own life and their own situations. He's such a fantastic writer for making his point but leaving everything open for interpretation.

You should seriously consider a collaboration with Watsky, you both share this insane, amazing style of taking an unconventional approach to your music but somehow making it awesome. Keep doing you, Frank, and maybe stop by Boise sometime!

The message, at least to me, is him suppressing his true emotions and desires. He goes on through out the song about wanting these dream like scenarios, yet he corrects himself by saying that he just wants a dog. It shows that he's kept things in for a while and doesn't want to upset others with his unrealistic aspriations
I really love this song because it really resonates with our daily struggle to reconcile our humble means and our great ambitions. We don't have a lot of time to achieve, but every time we meter our success we seem to come up with more shortcomings than feats. When he starts to think about wanting a dog he opens his mind to the things that he wants in his life, and a rush of ambition overwhelms him until he feels like he didn't accomplish enough, and the cycle repeats itself.
Anyway, you're worth working on and you have value to offer to the world, you will find success in your endeavors as long as you work hard enough at them. You will eventually find yourself in that house with your wife talking to you about your day as you pet your flying dog that just finished shooting their first feature-length film.
This has somehow became a mantra to me. I'm a cat person over dogs too, but it feels comforting, to tell myself I just want a dog. It's ok, you just want a dog. When life is sucking me into this pit of longing for something more or the desire to be great, I tell myself it's ok to just want a dog. It's ok if all you ever have is a dog.
