Johann Sebastian Bach's BWV 192, “Nun danket alle Gott” (Now thank ye all our God) is an intriguing cantata: Bach composed it in 1730, but without a preserved purpose. Could it have been for a wedding ceremony, the feast of Trinity, or Reformation Day? The cantata is also preserved in an incomplete state: Since the tenor part is missing, performances of this piece are always dependent on reconstructions. Therefore, despite picking up on a well-known hymn, the cantata remains a bit of a mystery.
In this episode of "Bach Factory", Xoán Castiñeira and Rudolf Lutz help us understand it and attempt to uncover some of its musical secrets.
"Bach Factory" is a video series by the J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen that gives you interesting insights into Bach's cantatas - including exclusive excerpts from their live performance.

I know that Bach was a devout man, I sensed for years now that Lutz and Stiftung are devout Christians, now I know it is so. I am very gratified that my love for Baroque sacred music, especially JSB, is based on Biblical truth. Thank you for the English workshop.

What a wonderful pleasure to see Xoán and Rudy together again in these workshops! Such a gift to the world. (And thank you for doing it in English and what a great addition the titles and text are!)

I love how Xoan's delight in Rudy's exposition echoes and multiplies Rudy's delight in Bach's multifarious complex brilliance.

What a great public service you are doing! I live in Portugal, a former member of The Gulbenkian Choir, and will be in St. Gallen next December. I hope to attend your concert and sing in the audience!
I was frustrated because I don't understand German, now I can fully appreciate Bach Stiftung videos!
    Thank you!
