What to do when they say you're "overqualified"

  • Hearing that you're overqualified for a job can be a tough pill to swallow, especially when you know that it's just a pretext to cover up something else. It's not uncommon for employers to use the "overqualified" excuse to reject WOC and POC candidates without having to explain the real reason for their decision. This can be discouraging and demoralizing to say the least.
    It can also make you feel undervalued and dismissed, as if your qualifications and experience are somehow a liability rather than an asset. And it can be confusing, especially if you're not sure what the real reason for the rejection is. This can lead to a lot of self-doubt and second-guessing, which can be damaging to your confidence and your career overall.
    On top of all of that, the "overqualified" excuse can also be a cover for discrimination, like ageism, sexism, or racism, which can be especially damaging, and even traumatizing.
    If this has happened to you, it's crucial to remember that this does NOT define you or what you bring to the table; it is simply one person or set of people's opinion-and it's likely a cover in any case. So what do you actually do in a situation like this?
