Once you see the leaves, wait a good one month so that the roots are developed and ready for transplantation. Thank you for your kind words 😊🙏

Rooting in water works, but it’s not ideal.. it generates water roots that are not adapted to soil. When you plant these in soil, they will take longer to acclimate, because their roots need to change.
You can just stick these cuttings in sand and you’ll have a better outcome.

I planted my bougainvillea in water years ago and it flowered in 3 weeks. As you said algae will grow around the submerged part of branch if water not changed frequently. I use a more thicker branch eg. 5 to 10mm dia branches for water planting and it works.

its me again. I am trying this today with 4 cuttings. It always 75F (24C) inside the house and I want to give this water propagation a try since it seems really straightforward. I also watched your other video where you propagate with perlite only and I will try that as well.
I do have a couple of questions as always:
#1 I have some cuttings that I propagated with the ICU (plastic bag/greenhouse) method I mentioned in another video. Well, out of about 12 cuttings, only 4 rooted. I used coco peat and compost to root them in and I am wondering what's a safe time to remove them from the cups and place them in a pot with a proper medium? I dont want to do it too early but I dont want to wait too long either. Although there are many holes in the bottom of the cup, its only coco peat and compost so I am not sure if there is sufficient to keep it growing in.
#2 Here in the US, we sometimes order very small bougainvilleas from other states in like 2" plastic pots called "starter plants". Basically propagated cuttings that nurseries sell. Well, these plants are shipped in the mail and can travel 3-5 days before reaching you. In your expert opinion, how would you handle these plants after going through the stress of being shipped? Normally they repot okay but sometimes the stress can kill them.
Sorry the comment/questions are so long!
    Thank you!!!

Sure, you’re always welcome, long or short comments, interesting nevertheless make them great fun to read and I too learn and unlearn a few important things. So thank you for being the initiator of some pertinent discussions.
Perfect, yes you are right, this method is pretty straightforward and the results are near perfect with the temperature range you have locked inside the house. Wow, really, I was about to paste the Perlite link but you sure mean what you say, impressive. Yes, that one is as I said in the video, no one has tried it yet and I wonder why given the results it promises, it should be the number 1 option for Bougainvillea propagation. I wish you luck and energy.
#1} Here’s the timeline I have followed with great results from propagation to transplantation.
      0 weeks……..Cuttings started
Until week 6……Newly propagated plants in shade
After week 8……New plants shifted to full sun
2-4 weeks in the sun…..the plants can be repotted
A few pointers to make sure the plant has a perfect transition-
      - Do this in the evenings, wherein a good 8-10 hours before the sun is up. Of course, for 2 weeks this plant should stay in the shade
      - The soil mix should be as close as possible to the propagation mix
      - Don’t trim or prune the leaves or branches or flowers at this point
      - No way the plant with naked roots would take this process well, so please make sure you get the roots along with soil transported to the new medium
      - Stop watering 2- 3 days before this process so that the roots are well clinging onto the soil and the whole thing comes out as one
      - They won’t mind growing in the initial pot, but you will have to change the soil every 3 months or so if you wish to keep them growing in a smaller space
      #2}
The first thing I would do to work with such a plant is NOT DO ANYTHING other than watering and making sure they adapt to the new place they found themselves in for AT LEAST 2 WEEKS and the of course replant them as suited, pot or ground. The first watering is important, so make sure you get a tray filled with water and just place the pot in it and let it get all the water it can slowly. Starting the next day, water the pot the normal way and once every 4 days. The pot should be in an area that gets morning sun and evening sun, for the first week and then the next week shift it to full sun and water once every 4 days. And after the repot, 2 weeks, again once every 4 days watering and after repotting (the plant comes back to shade) and 2 weeks into it, you can take the plant to the sun and now start watering once every 7 days.
If there is anything else, please let me know and we can talk more on the topic.
      Thank you. Cheers!!

@@GauravChhikaraGardenDubai Wow, these are amazing answers that I wish I would have asked a few days prior.
      So for your answers
#1 -Perfect, even though only 4 rooted, they look healthy and we are right at week #4. So in a couple of weeks, I will start to introduce them to some sun like you mentioned. I will follow all your other guidelines as well. This really helps!
#2 -I received 5 plants this way in the mail late last Friday and unfortunately repotted them the next day. They were placed on the patio where there is no direct sunlight. They seem to be okay but one of them all the leaves started to shrivel up and turn brown. I am not sure if it's going to survive. I think I just stressed out the root system. Not sure if there is anything I can do now? There are a few leaves that still look okay but it seems each day it looks worse and worse. If you have any advice, great, but at this point, I am not sure the roots can handle any more changes. Any thoughts to help it survive? We are at 100-102F (~37C) here in Houston TX just for reference. They came from Mobile, Alabama which currently has about the same temperatures at the moment.
I am receiving 3 more plants this week and will follow your advice on those about doing NOTHING!! So smart yet for some reason I didn't think of this beforehand.
Again, your advice has been "Epic" .....for sure!!!!!

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  2 года назад

@@justindpeak Thank you so much! I have been lucky with Bougainvilleas and I can say that I know a few things about this plant. Hehe. Yes, that too.
Perfect work and once again, credit to you. You got that right, let them get some sun. To be honest, these conversations work both ways, I too learn and unlearn a few things, so keep them coming.
If the plants had come and started doing what they are doing, I would have simply suggested one thing, there’s a good chance that the plant is round bound and all you should do is take the whole root ball as it is and bury it in a bigger pot and wait for those roots to untie naturally and effectively so that the plant can have a fair chance of survival. But as you said that you already have done the customary repotting, now the only other thing left to do is to make sure that you don’t water such plants too frequently, once every 4 days would be fine. I hope I am not too late with the reply, didn’t see this notification until today!
So both the cities have almost similar climatic conditions, so that’s not a problem.
I believe if the repotting was done right, the plant would come back even after losing all its leaves, happens a lot with plants, they do regroup and reinvent themselves and then start from the start. Could be the stress of the transit among other things. Plants have a way of coming back and I am sure you are in for some surprise, wait for it.
“Epic”!! Well, thank you for your kind words. And “Epic” questions deserve epic answers, so I just followed your lead.
Great chatting with you. Will look forward to more such discussions in the future as well. And yes, please share how things go on the propagation front.
      Cheers!!

      1/3 Hello, Saif Salah!
How have you been! Hope things are great.
Some plants and even trees can be kept in water for years, without any problem; e.g. Pothos, Avocado, Bougainvilleas, and so many others, of course after 6-8 months, if you want them to grow further and aggressively, liquid fertilizers should be added.

Bougainvillea propagation the EPIC way, in WATER || Rarely done 😱 Want to know WHY, please watch on
There can be so many examples of successful transplantations and a plant would only gain a certain growth in a water medium, soil is soil and hence cannot replace water, however, space crunch sometimes makes you these routes and done right, they can work just fine.
I have been working extensively on this dilemma for a few months now and will keep sharing if I have some encouraging results. Stay tuned. If the transfer is done at the right time, the plant won't wilt, I can assure you that. And also, if you propagate a cutting indoors, please make sure that once shifted to the soil, you keep the pot in a similar moisture and temperature range for 2-3 days.
      Hope this was helpful.
If there is anything else, please let me know and we can discuss more.

Just that I treated the cuttings right at the start in a solution of water and cinnamon powder. After that, they are put in simple tap water. Also, please note that you have to be observant of any problem with the water, gets murky or dirty, simple change it with more tap water, continue the cycle until roots are developed and you are ready to transfer these cuttings to the soil.

Should we transfer them to soil during rainy season

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  3 года назад

That would be fantastic if you can manage that kind of timing 😊
The idea is to transfer them to the soil whenever the roots are anywhere between 4 and 6 inches in length. On average, to develop roots that long, will take about 1.5 to 2 months.
If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have a discussion.

I put it in flower pot.
So, can I remove it and do this way to succeed? No space indoor, can I still keep them in the open? Pl reply. GOD BLESS.

You're welcome. Just to be clear, you mean you had put them in soil and now want to remove them and propagate them in water instead. i would not advise you do that simply because chances of their survival are far too low. Better would be to bring in new cuttings and start them in water. Sure, you can put them out however please make sure the temperature is not more than 30 degrees celsius. Anything else, please feel free to reach out.

Hi Simi, welcome to the channel. Please make sure you are subscribed and keep up the support. If you start a cutting in one medium, changing the medium is not advised simply because if one medium didn't initiate the root formation other won't either. Hi Gaurav, Its a great video and water propogation is my favourite thing. I have got little success as well of late. Right now its summer time in India. I have a mature trunk of Sheesham and I want to try water propogation. Can I try and how ?

Hi Himanshu, thank you for your kind words. Welcome!! Please make sure you subscribe and keep up the support. About Sheesham- please watch this ruclips.net/video/iYwfa-PyEuk/видео.html
And as you said you want to propagate it in water, you can do that too, I will explain below, however my suggestion would be start it in a soil given its a bigger cutting and transplanting it later to soil might have its consequences. Nevertheless, if you still want to start in water- please do this simple thing and you will get the roots- scar the bottom, then put small cuts to reveal the cambium on the circumference and insert small wood columns or stones to let the cambium stay revealed; remove all the leaves or unwanted branches, that's it and let it stay in the water. Change water every week or so, earlier if you see discoloration. I wish you all the energy and patience to nail this. This is some project and you will finish with great success, no doubt. Cheers!!

I got a branch of Bougainvillea but don't know which side is the side from which it will start rooting. Do roots come out from either side of the branch ?

    • @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai
      @GauravChhikaraGardenDubai  4 года назад +4

Yeah, that happens sometimes but please note that roots come out only from the base.
However if you aren't sure about the bottom (which forms the roots) and the top then I would suggest do a simple observation. Hold the cutting vertically and look at it, if the thorns (or leaf nodes) are pointing upwards then that would be your top and base. Alternatively, if you hold the cutting vertically and thorns (or leaf nodes) are pointing downwards then that would the base and top. Hope you will run this test and find out exactly which part would work. Good luck.

      1. Cut woody starts. How long?
      2. Remove all leaves & thorns, scar base of start.
      3. Place starts in water.
      4. Change water about 1x/week
At this time clean/swab starts to remove any algae, then completely submerge starts in water for 5-10 min. Return starts to Rooting position in water.
      5. Leaves will appear in 2-3 weeks
      6. Roots start to grow after 1 month.

You have highlighted a valid point. If you are starting them in soil then more than a day and those cuttings will have sucked in a lot of water and will definitely rot while in soil. Now if you propagate them in water then every 2-3 days you got to clean them otherwise these would also rot. I hope this clarifies.
