      You kind of missed the point of Yau Lye's comment :P He is saying that they didn't really think things through intelligently, but rather only thought about glory and French victory over their allies...

    • @TheFiresloth
      @TheFiresloth 7 лет назад +38

      The Hundred years war is pretty funny, since it can be seen as the french trying over and over to find a way to make their favourite tactic work again (and succeeding, weirdly).

    • @pmbartoli919
      @pmbartoli919 5 лет назад +13

      @@TheFiresloth well the French succeeded when they abandoned the focus on knights and created a modern army under Charles VII, they were also precursors (in western Europe) for the use of artillery. So they had to change their favourite tactics.

      @@massaweed420 Honestly, I can easily picture a French soldier of the era to not care much about the outcome of the battle in the long run but just how his conduct would be perceived in the eyes of God. Medieval people weren't nearly as afraid of death as we are now, in fact many even looked forward to the eternal paradise.

    The proud French knights being overconfident and reckless, this happens over and over again in this period, doesn't it?

    • @KingsandGenerals
      @KingsandGenerals  7 лет назад +797

      Yes, it seems that we are reading about the same battle over and over again for 150 years. At this point, I pity the horses more than the knights. :-)

      @TemplarX2 7 лет назад +85

      Cowardly Eastern Europeans though. Retreated at the crucial moment. The Burgundians took the brunt of the battle and still somehow prevailed. So bad.

    • @damianmares5338
      @damianmares5338 7 лет назад +251

      Quetzalcoatl the east Europeans were thought to continuously try to persuade the burgundians to use the infantry first, so they probably thought that they did everything they could
      Plus that, the experienced soldiers in the wallachian continget were few in number, due to the victory that they recently "suffered"( even if they won the battle in 1395, they were outnumbered and they suffered horrific losses too), so it was made mostly from inexperienced men who were easy to rout( especially after they saw how the better equipped and trained burgundians knights were just trashed)
      The cavalry charge was really stupid, if only the westerners would've done as the Hungarian king adviced.....

      An example of how arrogance and excessive pride can lead to defeat and death. Sigismund and Mircea proposed that the Wallachian infantry attack first since they had experience against the Ottomans from the previous years of fighting and the first line of the Ottoman soldiers consisted of slighty weaker troops used to tire the enemy until the Spahis joined to attacked the tired and disorganised enemy, but the French refused because they thought that they will lose the opportunity to gain honor and prestige in favour of the Wallachians

    Wow, you guys are improving at a stellar pace. The change of narrators is really helping, and you've stopped sounding too dramatic. Keep up the good work!
    That said, I spotted two minor errors in this video: Firstly, the Knights Hospitaller's army appears to originate from Malta, which is perhaps their best-known base, but in the 1390s they were stationed on Rhodes, which they acquired in 1310 and lost in 1522. Secondly, you referred to the Hungarian capital as Budapest, but Budapest was created as a unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda in 1873, Buda having been the capital until then. I could see why you might want to call it Budapest just for the audience's sake, but it would only take a second to say e.g. "Buda, the Hungarian capital" instead, and it'd be more accurate!

    One of the most interesting things you learn in this series is that the different Christian kingdoms (Serbs, Wallachians, Moldavians, Hungarians etc.) seemed to have been spending more time fighting each other than being united against the Turks, or even siding with the Turks against another Christian kingdom. It goes to show that this idea of a united Christian Europe fighting against Islam is a myth invented by modern day ethnonationalists.

      The Catholics fought a lot against Orthodoxs I guess since the division of the Roman Empire but also against the Muslims in Anatolia, Levant and the Iberian peninsula too on the western side when the crusades started and made treaties with the byzantines and Hungarians
      The orthodox byzantines in the other hand also fought a lot with the early Muslim Arabs and the Muslim Seljuk Turks
      And Russians were another tough enemy to the ottomans
      The ottomans too turned against the Armenians after they were living in under the ottoman rule for 4 centuries in WW1 after their revolts
      Sides can sometimes easily change, just like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, fought together against Poland and fought each other about 4 years after

    Despot Stefan Lazarević had good relationship with King Sigismund of Hungary. King Sigismund even granted fortresses of Belgrade and Golubac to Despot Stefan, concluded alliance with him and Despot Stefan was even a high member of the Crusader Order of the Dragon formed by King Sigismund. The battle of Nicopolis was I think just a payback for King Sigismund's actions when Despot Stefan just ascended to the throne of Serbia, when King Sigismund attacked Serbia from the north.

    As a fellow Hungarian, my eyes almost popped, when you talked about Budapest and called it the capital. It is true, that it is our capital now, but back then Visegrad had that title:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historical_capitals_of_Hungary
    Also Budapest was the result of the merge of two growing agglomerations: Buda and Pest. They were separately administrated cities till 1873:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Budapest
    One can argue, that calling the city Budapest helps easier understanding instead of the lengthy explanation:
    "The crusaders joined forces with Sigismund at Buda, former predecessor part of what today known as Budapest". But calling it a capital is historically inaccurate, and in a series, like this, I think you should try to be as accurate as possible. For starters you can ask me about Hungarian history anytime you like (I loved to learn history during high school). If you can find historian(s), who can verify your scripts and facts for your videos, that would be even better.

    • @KingsandGenerals
      @KingsandGenerals  7 лет назад +9

      That is what happens when you assume that you know everything. I knew about the Visegrad period, but for some reason assumed that it was over at that time. Yes, you are right, I thought that saying "Budapest" will make it easier for a casual viewer. Thanks for pointing these out. Sorry.

    • @jvizkeleti
      @jvizkeleti 7 лет назад +8

      Actually Sigismund's capitol city was Buda. Even when he became Holy Roman Emperor he kept Buda as his Capitol. I think it is fair to say that Buda was the capitol of the Kingdom of Hungary at that point.
      I also noticed this "Budapest" mistake.
      Also the creation of Budapest was a merger of three cities not two. Buda, Pest and Óbuda. Óbuda means ancient-buda which was a city built upon the roman city of Aquincum. Óbuda is on the Buda side of the Danube and is District III of current Budapest.

    • @gabortoth5061
      @gabortoth5061 7 лет назад +4

      After some digging it seems like, that during Sigismund's rule Buda really became the capital (as Visegrad was losing it's "capital" popularity). Although different sources (wiki/non-wiki/hungarian/non-hungarian) have different dates but they are consistent in describing this transition. So at this point it seems like a bigger mistake to state that it wasn't the Hungarian capital than that it was.

    Makes me wonder how useful European tactics actually were. They get their ass kicked everytime they fight a non european army. Makes me think that all glory behind european heavy cavalry is nothing more dramatization which most likely made by teenagers who hyped about knights and heavy cavalry but without much knowledge and understanding about outcomes. I personally like the picture of french knight with lance but history show much different picture.

    • @andreasimoncini2793
      @andreasimoncini2793 6 лет назад +24

      I know I'm answering this 8 month later,but this is a fairly uninformed comment. European tactics could be as effective as any other army,but it was not suited to fight experienced light horse infantry. While they might be "light",they trained their whole lives,and were incredibly effective in the suited situation. The Mongols conquered a good bit of Asia and Europe on the back of their light cavalry. Heavy European knight used to chase light infantry always end in the same way. Death. Cause they can't catch them. A wise commander knows that(Sigismund apparently) and uses his cavalry wisely.

    • @abdullahalrasheed394
      @abdullahalrasheed394 5 лет назад +44

      Simply because in the medieval times (and even before), Europeans followed a very different doctrine in terms of armor and how to approach enemy, where they relied on very heavy cavalry and infantry with slow manoeuvrability. Whilst the Middle Easterns (Arabs and Muslims in general) followed a completely different doctrine, they relied on light cavalry and infantry with high manoeuvrability. Each doctrine has its own flaws, so only smart leaders could utilise what they had on hand to win battles.
      You can trace these things in all the battles fought between the east and the west, from Spain (when it was under Arab's control) to the Levant.

    • @mysticonthehill
      @mysticonthehill 5 лет назад +1

      They won if the caught them but that depended a lot on terrain and there was always the risk that you we supposed to pursue them to spring an ambush.
      Competent leaders only allowed them short control charges. Like you see in the third crusade. But being aristocrats it took a very firm hand to control them.

    Not that suprising that European sources would massively inflate the Ottoman numbers. That way it wouldn't seem like they were embarassingly out-strategied and out-maneuvered, which they were. Bayezid seems like he went there to win a battle, while the French knights went there to live out a Crusader fantasy.
