Coverdale completely screwed Sykes over. Utterly and completely. I don’t think they even spoke in recent decades. If that’s how Coverdale treats his “mates” I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be a friend of his. Sykes was one of the most underrated guitarists and songwriters of the 80’s and 90’s. He will be greatly missed by the millions of people who loved the music that poured out of his soul. RIP John. 😢🎸💔

I do not wish to speak ill of Sykes, but you seem to have forgotten, or maybe you're unaware, that when Coverdale was suffering from sinus problems and couldn't sing, Sykes tried to carry on without him and tried to force Coverdale out of his own band. That's when the problems started.

@CB-xr1eg I do know Sykes tried to keep the recording of the album on track and moving forward but I honestly don’t buy Sykes trying to oust Coverdale out of his own band. It was Coverdale’s baby and I’m not disputing that. It’s just over the years, Coverdale has never been exactly known for his relationship with the truth. I guess the two things we can agree on are 1. Neither one of us was there so we don’t know what truly happened and 2. Sykes was a master guitar player and his talent via songs like “In The Still Of The Night” propelled Whitesnake into the stratosphere. Either way, it’s a loss but at least his physical suffering in fighting the cancer is over.

@@CB-xr1eg That's bullsh!t. Everyone had left the band after Sykes will tell you Coverdale hires and fires with the seasons. a sign of insecurity. He doesnt want to be in the shadow of anyone on the stage. Talk about ego. John Sykes is the one who put Whitesnake on the map. Before him, Whitesnake was nothing more than a poor man's deep purple. Do some research dude, before you take anyone's word as the total truth. Coverdale is a user. Why is it that only Coverdale put Sykes in a negative light? Sykes was totally loyal to Phil Lynott after the breakup of Thin Lizzy. He actually performed on ALL of Phil's solo albums afterwards. He was actually reluctant to join Whitesnake and even turned Coverdale down the 1st time he asked. But Phil told John that he needed to move on. At which time he accepted Coverdale's invitation.,

We do not know what really happened. Sykes deserved to tour for the 1987 album that's a fact. It was also his baby. But now it was the time for Coverdale to be a gentleman and he acted accordingly, remembering the good times and recognizing talent and contributions to his career.

It's a long time I've been reading several ghastly comments about David's and John's strained relationship. For what I am aware, they didn't get along on a personal side, but musically they were magnificient together. I am a huge fan of the Slide It In Whitesnake, the six piece that ended in a four piece. I loved that four piece (Coverdale-Sykes-Murray-Powell), four of the most extraordinary musicians playing together indeed. That' s all that matters to me.
Whatever happened between David and John, it's most likely we will never know the real truth; who fired who, who said this or that, whatever. John was an extraordinary guitar player, criminally underrated (I never saw him in any list among the best guitar players). He deserved more than being "the guitarist of Whitesnake". There's Tygers Of Pan Tang, Thin Lizzy, Blue Murder, his solo career (he was a ver good singer, too). Now that he is gone, everybody praise him, like he is a legend, a guitar hero, when the truth is that he has always been a fantastic musician who, IMHO, seemed to remain unnoticed.
It's very, very sad he is gone, and so young; and now I don't care about what happened with Coverdale. All I know is that we lost one of the greatest guitar players ever, or at least to me, who although I met him though WS 40 years ago, I went for more because I wanted to know about his music, his previous career.
Thank you for everything, darling John. Your guitar, your music will live forever 🌟🌟.

If what is said about with happened around the 1987 album (problems between them, and how John Sykes was so much mistreated, fired and denied to participate in the mixing process and in the touring, etc... ) is true... what a shame.
What is true: that Whitesnake album really hit the charts, and meant a great success and a strong impulse for a band whose sound was getting outdated. They got a big chance thanks the contributions of Sykes. Powerful songs, incredible guitar work (it is possible to listen to the isolated guitar tracks, that are awesome). I don't know the whole story but John Sykes worked really hard for the band.
Edit: I have just listened to Blue Murder, the vocal capabilities of John are outstanding, too. He had a great voice, he was an extremely talented musician and had a great image, a real rock star although unknown for most of the public. I understand Coverdale would surely feel at risk of losing his job.

David feared that John was gonna want to sing a song or two.........John was younger, better looking could play the hell out of the guitar, could write killer songs , as well as hold his own (if not surpass) Davids vocals. David (understandably) was fearful of losing the leadership of his band. Dave stated that John ran up studio time ($$$) without his concent and said that he was already in debt. Over a million dollars........Dave said he couldn't trust him. I call bullshit, because Dave spent even MORE money on it after he fired John. John was only doing what he knew the songs needed and prolly did go in to track a bit more without Davids knowledge, but it payed off. That album never exists without John (rip).

Terrible video. Can't belive I lasted 49 seconds. It includes photos of the wrong John Sykes and endless words not related to Coverdale's short insta post. Please take it down. Disrespectful.

Was there even a point Coverdale fired John Sykes the way he fired millions of others, if you were in WS back in the day you’d be lucky to be on like one album he couldn’t even hang on to Adrian either, but Tommy Aldrich returning was the impossible

Unbelievable. Coverdale screw Sykes completely. There has been no relationship since the betrayal, yet Coverdale is now looking for press. What a loser.

That's rich. Coverdale screwed Sykes, Murray, Dunbar , and Airey over. The whole band was fired, and Coverdale took the cash for himself.

Love Coverdale...however he was a complete prick to John and was extremely jealous of his talent and looks. John was sacked from Whitesnake...after he helped make the band superstars. Take this crap down, its embarrassing. RIP John x

They didn’t have unique bond. LOL
Coverdale unceremoniously fired Sykes after recording that 1987 album and they never got along after that.
Yes, celebrate Sykes’ legacy but tell the truth.

This video is AI driven with false photos of another completely different person who goes by the same name John Sykes.
    D. Coverdale screwed John Sykes music career with irreperable damage. John Sykes quoted in 2017 that "I wish to never speak to that man ever again".
Also Robert Plant once called D. Coverdale "David Coverband".
Also my quote is of the same category by stating that Dave CoverGIRL needs to stay in hiding for life.

Seriously, what absolute AI bollocks. "unique bond"? Despite writing all that great music, Coverdale booted John from the band, to his great shame. Coverdale has no friends. He has no bonds with the great players that he played with

I liked the original Whitesnake with Bernie, John Lord. Cozy etc... I loved Sykes with Lizzy, and Blue Murder. BUT. I agree that Sykes was the spark Dave needed for new songs, new image etc.. I liked it, but nothing touches early 80s WS in my op, 1 last thing, if Sykes stayed in Whitesnake, I don't believe alternative music would have been as huge, Dave made the big money, became the #1 band in the world, but Vai and Vandenberg were never right for snake, The metal thing burned out, Sykes was more classic rock than metal, and would have added class. and longevity to Whitesnake, Love Vai and Vandenbeeg, but hated them with Whitesnake, SOUNDED LIKE SHIT AND THEY LOOKED STUPID. Also , Sykes was a great singer, unlike Vai and Vandenbwerge, Maybe that scared David. GOODBYE JS, YOU MADE YOUR MARK R.I.P PEACE
