So genuine! I feel her fear and I understand it. I kept waiting for Dad's reassurance, but it would probably sound hollow since there are no guarantees of safety. Good video!
Right after she ends with "It's coming towards us!" one of them jumped into the air, grabbed her by the hair, threw her far away and broke her dads wheelchair's wheels. No but really how can this video not make you happy? It's great, and I am really happy someone who really appreciate it like her gets to see it too.
Absolutely love the footage. The clear water allows you to see the rest of the whale, rather than just the part that shows above the water. Most people that get to see a humpback (me),just get to see from the hump to the tail. I thought her excited commentary added to the excited. Loved it!
I think a lot of awe and a healthy bit of fear is a quite appropriate response to a multitonne animal taking an interest in you. And there's no doubt that whale is checking them out about the same amount they are checking it out. I grew on the ocean, and I still can't help but let out a little "Oh Shit" when the rare occurance of a whale twice the length of my boat glides bye. We need a little more awe in our lives. It makes their peaceful nature all the more incredible. So curse away lass!
This video by far is absolutely amazing! This is actually my first time seeing a real whale besides on cartoon shows and it made me respect nature more they are absolutely beautiful creatures!
terrific video and experience. I love the way your daughters voice goes from paralyzed in fear to playful and excited in a second. It made me laugh. Thanks for posting
What an experience!!! That was amazing. And your daughter is funny going between a cheery "hello" to the one farther away to hyperventilating when they got close. And she's a better videoagrapher than most on RUclips. Well done family!! Thanks for sharing!!
Oh come on, her fear is 100% appropriate for the situation, and if anything makes the experience more marvelous. That's the whole concept of the sublime, astoundingly beautiful while simultaneously frightening. Her reaction perfectly captures a spectacular moment between whale and human and sea, thus further intensifying the gravity of the experience for both her and us as viewers. Cheers!
this kid is so damn brave. I'm probably four times her age and would've been all like "SHIT IT'S RIGHT FUCKING THERE! BRACE FOR IMPACT GUYS WTF!" and nope'd the hell out of there.
I'm so sorry to hear that. For healing I recommend canoeing with children and watching some of the amazing wildlife this planet has provided for! Cheers mate!
Great life lesson dad! So much better for her than sitting in front of a game console. She will grow up to be a much more interesting young woman. Bravo
I have been on houseboats this close to whale and my grandfather has been on his fishing boat where a whale was indeed hit them, more so rise up from underneath. Whales do not flip boats, they were never in any form of danger, sure it certainly is confronting, but not dangerous and certainly not life threatening. Sincerely, an Australian with basic marine knowledge
in-f-ing-credible. I mean, we all know they are intelligent, but it's so obvious that they are self-aware and curious about us when they aren't being hunted. So beautiful.
A close encounter of a beautiful kind, and I thought the young lady's commentary made it even better viewing. She was overawed and overjoyed all at once, and who wouldn't be, only feet away from such gigantic, gentle creatures? Sadly, such a magnificent video as this is bound to attract dumb criticism from those lower life-forms among us, "Trollus Obnoxious", a human sub-species of minor importance. Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment! :)
Thanks Graham, i figured it was far away from here -- southeastern Connecticut, USA. Our water is not quite so clear. But it is my dream to kayak with whales and your video inspires me to pursue my dream!
This would be mindblowingly awesome. I can't believe there are people who could give a shit less about the creatures we are fortunate enough to share the planet with.
Whales just have that affect on you, trust me. They are magnificent. And I can imagine she was scared out of her pants it was going to flip the boat over. I was that excited seeing a whale a mile away. I can't imagine seeing one that close, let alone the noises I might make. LOL!
That is definitely the experience of a lifetime. Graham - you should have at least calmed your daughter down, and reassured her that the whales weren't 'attacking' - she was scared out of her mind... I know if I was with MY daughter, she'd probably be hanging out of the canoe trying to pet the whale :) I've raised my daughter to respect nature, and she already wants to be a Veterinarian. She's 11. :D (proud Dad smile)
Awesome thing about whales is that even if they capsize you, you're not really in any danger. You wouldn't get eaten and would just have an amazing story to tell...like so
Whales are really, really big and a canoe can be very small and fragile in comparison. I think everyone in that video did very well holding it together.
WOW....So amazing. She came up to have a look and she knew just how to avoid hitting the boat while getting in so close...I think I would have turned off the motor though...so the sound wasn't bothering her...or my experience of her even....but I can understand you might want to move at some point
I think the girl might be in her early teens. And we all swear alot, even if its bleeped in videos in the states, it happens alot in real life and many countries (like mine) allow swearing on television (this is Aussies also). The swearing kinda shows that its not any "acting" in the video. And for a young girl to be in a tiny boat with two of natures biggest animals around her it sure can be scary she can use any word she likes in my book. It is truly an amazing video, experience of a lifetime.
I have an unusual fear of whales. I don't ever want to be near them, yet since seeing this I can imagine myself being there, enjoying it and feeling wonder at their presence. Then I think what if I fell in and the whale touched me and now I'm all twitchy and it's hard to breathe.
WOW....So amazing. She came up to have a look and she knew just how to avoid hitting the boat while getting in so close...I think I would have turned off the motor.
just turn the volume down. made my experience that much better... or better yet play another video of whale sounds to watch it with. at least she kept the camera in the right place so kudos to her.
I would love an oppertunity to be so close to one of these majestic creatures. I wouldn't be too worried about them being a danger to your boat, they're not stupid, they just like to see how close they can get sometimes. Some whales like watching people as much as people like watching whales. I live on an island and we have minke whales come into the bay a lot and sometimes they follow people's boats. Never heard of anyone being capsized by one, even when they're playing with dinghies.
The girl was young, excited and scared get over it. That was so cool would love to have been there especially when the whale pokes his head up and stares at them. Just frickin wild:)
You were such a scardy cat. Oh lord! You should have been enjoying it but instead you were freaking out the whole time! Enjoy this....not many people get a chance like that ever.
It is scary! I worked at a fishing lodge for a summer and had an experience like this while I was alone in my boat. I dropped many an F bomb on the radio and my hands were shaking like crazy. They are really curious and the intelligence, it's hard to describe, but when you look them in the eye there you just feel like they know exactly what you are thinking...anyways, #1 experience in my life to date, will be hard to top!
Nah.. looks like a kayak. - open top kayaks (those without spray skirts or enclosed hulls) are generally used in this situation. - kayaks can have attached rudders, that are used to turn the boat while paddling that are controlled through foot pedals (canoes don't have this feature). Seems to me that they are in a kayak no w canoe. Could be wrong though.
Seriously? This is a pretty incredible experience and although she may have been a bit worried the amazement at seeing such beautiful animals must overwhelm that fear. Further how do you expect the father to get them out of the situation?
if you let the whales come to you instead of going after them it's a bit safer, they choose when they come closer, nice video and wont say anything about sounds daughter is making, nice creatures
This is amazing. It just became news in a Swedish newspaper (aftonbladet.se). What an amazing experience. You're very lucky. And I think it's very cute how the daughter is both scared but excited at the same time.
easy to say but you shouldn't be afraid when things like this happens, whales are extremely wise and intelligent beings, only we have forgotten how to understand them i think. he clearly could have knocked your boat if he wanted to, and he clearly and gracefully avoided it =) you should go out again and try to touch it, they seem to like you=)
I can understand how unnerving it must have been but if anything similar ever happens again, keep in mind that whales are extremely intelligent, gentle animals. They had no intention of doing anything that would harm you and the intelligence to make sure they didn't.
Anyone else seem to notice how conscious of the boat those whales were? They made sure to note hit the boat or try to capsize it. I know whales aren't aggressive usually unless kept in captivity, but these whales just seemed curious and gentle. Maybe it's just me.
I'm afraid of boats and deep water, and just watching this video game me both a sense of wonder and a warm feeling slowly running down my pant leg, if you know what I mean.
i never thought for a moment they would try and do anything to hurt us,but the sheer size of them, and thhe fact that they were 2 males playing, i slight miss judgment on their part could mean we have a 5km swim
So genuine! I feel her fear and I understand it. I kept waiting for Dad's reassurance, but it would probably sound hollow since there are no guarantees of safety. Good video!

terrific video and experience. I love the way your daughters voice goes from paralyzed in fear to playful and excited in a second. It made me laugh. Thanks for posting
The most beautiful thing here for me is a father and daughter spending time together like this :*)
What an experience!!! That was amazing. And your daughter is funny going between a cheery "hello" to the one farther away to hyperventilating when they got close. And she's a better videoagrapher than most on RUclips. Well done family!! Thanks for sharing!!
Awww this is so precious, she's like freaking out one second & then like ELLO awww this is amazing
I love the combination of fear and excitement in her commentary. Had to be a thrilling experience.
I love how excited/terrified the girl was. Totally adorable :-)
That is awesome. It gave me chills. I actually liked the kid's commentary. It added to the experience, I mean my god, it must have been surreal.
Cheers!
THANK YOU for keeping the camera on during this crazy moment, id have been just as scared. Amazing
Ignore the haters; this is a great clip and I'm sure it's an incredible memory. Be proud to share it.
This is a great video. To quote io9: "The combination of suppressed terror and full-bore wonderment is insanely fun to watch".
What beauty and grace. It made me cry; in fact I'm still crying.
I love how amazingly calm the dad is throughout this whole encounter.
Dad! HOLY! Ohh look at all the fishee around it =3
this kid is so damn brave. I'm probably four times her age and would've been all like "SHIT IT'S RIGHT FUCKING THERE! BRACE FOR IMPACT GUYS WTF!" and nope'd the hell out of there.
This is one of the coolest things i've seen. Simply amazing.
I'm so sorry to hear that. For healing I recommend canoeing with children and watching some of the amazing wildlife this planet has provided for!
Cheers mate!
Beautiful footage of an amazing experience. I was quite impressed by how your daughter kept the camera on the whales despite her exhilaration & fear!
This is one of the most incredible things I've ever watched. I can;t believe how lucky you guys were
Is she as cute as she sounds? "Oh my god, its going to hit us! Oh my god, Dad! Oh my god! Oh my god! ... Oooh! Look at the little fishies!"
Adorable
Great life lesson dad!
So much better for her than sitting in front of a game console.
She will grow up to be a much more interesting young woman.
Bravo
George: "I could see directly into the eye of the great fish."
Jerry: "Mammal."
George: "Whatever."

Her Reaction is priceless, my cheeks hurt from my unconTROLLable laughter.
Hats off to her for shooting such excellent footage under the circumstances
2:09 - dat switch from fear to "ooo look at all the fishies!!"
in-f-ing-credible. I mean, we all know they are intelligent, but it's so obvious that they are self-aware and curious about us when they aren't being hunted. So beautiful.
I love how she goes from near panic attack to "Hellooo fishy!"
Adorable
She's just adorable!
Great job filming!! Your commentary made my heart race!

that kid needs to calm down. if the whale wanted to tip them over, it would have done it already, ragged them under watter, and then eaten them.
I had the chills the entire time watching this video. What an insane experience!
Thanks Graham, i figured it was far away from here -- southeastern Connecticut, USA. Our water is not quite so clear. But it is my dream to kayak with whales and your video inspires me to pursue my dream!
Thanx for the video. Its awesome that you bravely record a long video. Thanx for that again. Adventure for life!
What an amazing experience for a father and daughter to share! Thrilling, but frightening at some parts as well :)
This would be mindblowingly awesome. I can't believe there are people who could give a shit less about the creatures we are fortunate enough to share the planet with.
A mixture of joy and terror. That's pretty awesome.
Whales just have that affect on you, trust me. They are magnificent. And I can imagine she was scared out of her pants it was going to flip the boat over. I was that excited seeing a whale a mile away. I can't imagine seeing one that close, let alone the noises I might make. LOL!

Wonderful video, Graham!! I SO wish I could have a similar experience.
One of the best whale videos I've seen. Great shooting Graham! Just remember to control your breathing!
Whales are really, really big and a canoe can be very small and fragile in comparison. I think everyone in that video did very well holding it together.
To be fair, this is a once in a lifetime experience for almost anyone, so I think we could forgive her being excited and overwhelmed, no?
WOW....So amazing. She came up to have a look and she knew just how to avoid hitting the boat while getting in so close...I think I would have turned off the motor though...so the sound wasn't bothering her...or my experience of her even....but I can understand you might want to move at some point
its amazing how gentle these whales are when around humans
LOVED the video and i am so (very positively) jealous!
Thanks for sharing this!
when something spectacular is happening, and she's clearly scared, I think an exception can be made.
How the hell could anyone harm these? They're absolutely magnificent!
I think the girl might be in her early teens. Awesome. You should feel privileged to be so close. Something you'll never forget and many others would love to have been in your (quaking) boots.
I have to say, seeing those big hulking things looming around just under the water looks pretty spooky. Awesome and cool, but spooky too.
I just wanna give those whales a big hug.
Hehe....I know...."Would someone please think of the children!"
Also...that girl got an experience of a lifetime:)
Aww, the whale seems playful... :)
I love when she notices the suckerfish, once in a couple of lifetimes experience.
I have an unusual fear of whales. I don't ever want to be near them, yet since seeing this I can imagine myself being there, enjoying it and feeling wonder at their presence.

just turn the volume down. made my experience that much better... or better yet play another video of whale sounds to watch it with. at least she kept the camera in the right place so kudos to her.
I love how she is freaking the shit out, then just "OHHH, look its the sucker fishes!!, Ahhhh!', then back to hyperventilating.
Had encounter like this in Whitsundays. Unforgettable! Glad I found the ORIGINAL clip!

What an amazing experience for these two. A privilege to be sure.
Lol I love how she said "ello" :)
Woah! Lucky! What an experience! That was priceless
holy shit this is epic. im so envious of you two! this would be incredible to see in person.
Seriously? This is a pretty incredible experience and although she may have been a bit worried the amazement at seeing such beautiful animals must overwhelm that fear. Further how do you expect the father to get them out of the situation?

It's funny that she is scared at them but tries to say Hello at the same time LOL
Got to love the brittish politeness... "OMG WE 'RE GONNA DIE!!! helloooo.... "

Absolutely amazing, wonderful ... I was much more worried about her hyperventilating than her language LOL
simply amazing video.
what an experience for the two of you, and now the rest of us.
this made me tear up! beautiful!
Beautiful video, thank you so much for sharing this amazing experience!
I can understand how unnerving it must have been but if anything similar ever happens again, keep in mind that whales are extremely intelligent, gentle animals. They had no intention of doing anything that would harm you and the intelligence to make sure they didn't.

I love at 0:29 how the whale punctuates the "O. M. PLOOOOFFFFFF"
Water around freezing or not: I would have jumped in with my waterresistant flipcam for some epic footage! Amazing!!!
I'm afraid of boats and deep water, and just watching this video game me both a sense of wonder and a warm feeling slowly running down my pant leg, if you know what I mean.
i like how the fish calmed her down for like ten seconds
What an amazing yet horrifying experience. I would both love and loath to be in this situation haha.
Pretty steady filming despite the fear, well done!
i never thought for a moment they would try and do anything to hurt us,but the sheer size of them, and thhe fact that they were 2 males playing, i slight miss judgment on their part could mean we have a 5km swim
What a reassuring father.
This would be amazing to watch in person. Nothing around you and huge whales right under your boat? You'd be freaking out too.
