I can't imagine the expression on the faces of those guys on the ground when they figured out what was happening. Absolutely awesome! And sir, you cuss like a gentleman.

Rich, this is one of the best RUclips videos I've seen in a long time. Love it! What a great guy you are. I cannot imagine what they were thinking when you turned, plucked it out, and landed. Unbelievable. Hell of a video and an incredible gesture. My father flies a S-76 and I passed this along to him. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it. Did those guys ever properly thank you? I think they owe you a few beers to say the least. Take care,
@@CerebralAilmentThis was actually a normal thing for a helicopter to do with very little risk at all. This is the EXACT kind of thing that helicopters have been built to do for decades. In the hands of a professional a helicopter is a tool like any other. He was aware of his surroundings, used cockpit resource management for the confined area operation, and never exceeded out of ground effect load limits. If any thing, this is how you do this kind of thing RIGHT.
@@CerebralAilment You obviously did not read my full comment or just trying to circumvent what I said about confined area operations. In confined area ops you are working close to obstacles while remaining clear of them. And this he was doing by having the student look out and back at the tail rotor to make sure it was, guess what, clear of the obstacles. It is very evident to me that you live up to your name. I have been an Army aviator and civilian helicopter guy for 25 years now. This was NOT as high risk manure. If there had been high winds, extremely high temperatures, high altitude, or any combination there of I would agree. But this is done well with in the confines of the so called "Dead Man's Curve" of the helicopter.
ImpendingJoker his tail may have been clear but the windshield was touching the tree. That isn’t remaining clear of them. It would have been very easy to get a skid caught on a tree branch, leading to dynamic rollover. The instructor never asked the student to make sure the right skid was clear before pulling out of it. This isn’t a typical confined area operation which means you have added risk. He was clearly inside the dead man’s curve for the R22 which goes from 10-700 feet at 0 air speed. Not that you can never be in the dead man’s curve, but you are certainly adding risk again. So the instructor is now risking a $200k+ helicopter and two lives for an $800 RC plane. On top of giving the student the idea that this is normal. Yes, he made sure that the tail was clear, but that isn’t the only consideration. Maybe you have done this type of flying in your career and I’m sure you have more hours than I do and had more training having flown in the military, but you can’t say that this is a normal confined area operation and there is no added risk.
I couldn’t imagine just crashing an RC when I was a kid, and just seeing a helicopter come down and grab it for me 😂 my favorite video on the internet. First seen it years and years ago
