- Why are Deftones popular again? I react to NEO PUNK FM's video. Is TikTok making Deftones and "White Pony" popular again? Are y2k cartoons responsible for the big tiddy goth gf trend, and in turn for Deftones e-girls? Find out in this reaction!

Awesome video Finn , The group will get alot of new listeners, and us older fans can show them many of their influences, like MBV, The Cure and others .🤘
How you feel about band snot, get some one my fave CDs. And was stoked see some new swifity, hats off that interview. Everyone made fun me loving that band. But to me everyone wants the lollipop corn hitch
Raven was/is still my goth waifu. I do keep a tradwife at home tho to take care of my brood tho.
I have nothing here to disagree with. But I'm definitely offended for some reason. So clearly you're not wrong.
Something is wrong with the stereo in my F150. No matter what I do it turns on country radio when you turn on the truck. I am Forced to hear pop country. And so I have had no choice but to give it a chance. And.....it is horrible trash garbage. No one should be listening to it 🤣🤦♂️
As someone who grew up quite heavily attached to the Nu metal scene. I have to say that the White Pony album really severed the ties between Deftones and the nu metal scene. It was very alienating on the first listen because I wanted something more familiar and within the realms of what they had produced previously.
They experimented and alienated a lot of their core fans with that album. It took a few years for fans to embrace the new sound and now it is revered as a blueprint for the countless bands with the loud and soft dynamic and the dreamy clean vocals.
Even emo took a leaf out of Deftones white pony at the time. Bands like Finch, Thrice, The Used and Dead Poetic.
There is absolutely an alternate universe where Deftones doesn’t get very big, their fanbase doesn’t aren’t nerds, and Finn does a video about how underrated they are.
I already did that video a month ago!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA and we appreciate this a lot.
I guessing he did not do his homework lol jaja
Finn's objective video on the Deftones was really good. I know it must have pained him to make it, but he did a great job with it.
So basically Hum, one of deftones' major inspirations (and personally my favorite band ever)
I think the whole "sexy Deftones" thing has everything to do with not only Chino's voice, but his (not so) thinly veiled sexually suggestive lyrics. I also think the shoegazey genre crossover thing the Deftones do is also conducive to making the dirty, dirty love.
Absolutely true. Just look at the song passenger or digital bath.
Making love to Deftones and Crosses is great!
@@HenritheHorse Crosses FOSHO
@@maynarddrivesfast804 Especially the first album.
And his voice is also a big factor, he articulates the lyrics as whispers, moans and overall voices that girls find attractive. Remember girls dont find a certain something attractive, they finde the idea they make about that thing attractive. And subtle sensual stuff rather than outright hot boys or sex lyrics works more for most of them. (Not all)
It's simple. People like good music.

But it's just tiktok
No, people do not.
My 15 year old daughter has become a huge Deftones fan over the past like 3-6 months. Not the Adrenaline, "heavy" Deftones I loved 20+ years ago, more like the Cherry Waves/Sex Tape stuff. To the point where she's now listening to The Smiths
Ask her about Ecco2k he's an artist who's pretty known around that tiktok circle
Lucky dad! 👍
So the songs that blew up because of tiktok😂
@@ryounyandraingang
Adrenaline Phase will always be the best tho 🗣️💯
They never really went away. White Pony was always a classic.
Finn I never understood why you call Deftones an incel band, because when I was in High school they were considered a "girl band" lol. Like every girl I knew that was into rock/alt music was obsessed with Deftones, but my guy friends would clown me for listening to them instead of Lamb of God or whatever.
Yeah literally every 25-35 year old hot girl around me is a huge fan of the Deftones.
its because Finn is secretly an incel and hates that people are getting laid to music he doesnt understand.
Yeah you're more likely to find chads rocking deftones than you would incels.
@@ObiWanShinobi67 I think Finn has been projecting his feelings about the Deftones to everyone and is now starting to see the truth.
Only an idiot like Adam Levine would call them an incel band. I can understand, as much as I love them, Rush being called that since the fanbase is mostly male but Deftones? FOH.
I would say Deftones has always been steadily popular though and fairly popular. Tiktok definitely helped blow them up a bit more but I've been into them since I was in like highschool and I've always noticed bands through out every era reference deftones as influence or a band they enjoy. I have always thought of them as a bands band. Which that in and of it's self keeps them relevant.
Massive Deftones fan since childhood, but I've gotta say -- your Deftones content always cracks me up, Finn. Respect.
I grew up loving Deftones because when nu metal was huge, Deftones was the more cool vibey band even though they didn’t hit the same numbers of popularity. But over time they were the band that influenced literally every metal band that came up in the 2000s. Fast forward 15-20 years and you now have a generation of people who hadn’t heard of Deftones, but grew up listening to bands who were influenced by them…it’s like a Nirvana fan discovering Pixies…or a Deftones fan discovering Bad Brains and The Smiths.
That's both massively incorrect and overly generous of you. Nirvana wasn't influenced by Pixies, of whom they were contemporaries, along with Deftones.
@@ProudFilthyCasual you can Google it. There’s a Rolling Stone interview where Cobain says that in trying to write the perfect pop song he was essentially trying to rip off Pixies.
@@ProudFilthyCasual Kurt literally said he was trying to sound like pixies haha
@Well Guitar I mean he said that about one song and then ripped of Killing Joke blatantly. So his words don't carry much weight. Nirvana were frauds anyways that only existed because Mudhoney carried their torch.
@@ProudFilthyCasual you massively talk out your ass. Cobain said it himself
It’s heavy ass shoe-gaze, and we’re seeing shoe-gaze rise in popularity with a lot of newer bands.
I got into new wave when I was a kid because bands like Deftones loved bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, and now kids are getting into bands that looked up to Deftones! It’s all cyclical
yeah 100% same, i got into so many genres like post punk new wave and shoegaze because of deftones, they opened my eyes to much amazing music
"It's all cyclical." - nerd
I got into White Pony when I found out they were influenced by those bands. I got into post punk and new wave like Cure, Depeche, Police and Duran in 99 when I started college so that drew me in compared to most Bizkit clone crap. Not TOO different from Smashing Pumpkins in songs like BWBW, Pissant, Cash Car Star, Love and Bodies.
@@depletable “‘it’s all cyclical’ -nerd”

Reminded me of Softcult. New girl band, shoegazy, pop rock, but heavy Deftones influences. They've also said it themselves.
My Ticket Home got that sound too.
I live in San Antonio, Deftones never stopped being popular here. It’s even a thing we joke about here lol
heyyy SA native here! 210!
We're acting like deftones hasn't always been very popular but correct they did get a boost
Stoked to see Neo Punk FM getting some love, their content is great. Respect the hell out of them for making vids on the things they enjoy instead of the constant "dhar mann bad" stuff every other youtuber does
You can’t deny some of the great albums Deftones have put out. White Pony, Around the Fur, Koi No Yokan, Saturday Night Wrist, Diamond Eyes….all fantastic era-defining records
Ohmmmmssss bro!!! Ohmssss! And btw Saturday Night Wrist was a low point.

Wait : hot e-girls melt for Deftones? Guess I'm gonna trim a soulpatch, wear oversized short-sleeve shirts, shants, chain-wallet and airwalks now.

Deftones are an unstoppable force.
I never listened to Deftones much back in the day but your video on them recently got me to give them a chance and I have not been disappointed.
They have always been popular, they constantly get praised with each new album which they deserve such praise, out of the nu metal bands they managed to evolve and still remain respected
It’s crazy how things come around again. Was recently in a room with the band/crew of a huge country rock artist, and several of these “kids” commented on the Deftones shirt I was wearing, and how they loved them. Did I mention they are country? I was blown away, lol.
A lot of country musicians are metalheads actually cuz there's a lot of $ in country vs metal these days
Deftones never stopped being popular
I’m surprised that Chevelle doesn’t seem to get as much attention, they’re so similar yet underrated af
Deftones is music for people who are horny and depressed. That’s why I like em.
In all seriousness though, I do think the fact they went straight into experimenting with other types of music helped, especially when nu metal was getting stale. They just didn’t sound the same as anyone else in the genre. They weren’t really afraid of “alienating” old fans which actually made them bigger. Consistently putting out quality music, even if you didn’t like them necessarily, it’s hard not to appreciate the heart they put into every release. They also are an easy gateway band, they have music anyone can enjoy even if you don’t like heavier music. I also think Chino’s vocals are intriguing, they’re not polished and rough around the edges but there’s a raw emotion you feel from his delivery and I’ve always been mesmerized by his vocals especially on White Pony. Songs like Digital Bath, RX Queen, Knife Prty, Change; his vocals actually blend into the music and create an extra instrument. Some of the “punisher” fans, as you call them, have faded into the background and those of us that are more than willing to hear our teenage relative blasting a quality metal band like Deftones with such a deep and diverse discography is honestly a nice thing. Tiktok did some good and clearly piqued interest and hopefully it makes them dive deeper into such a similarly diverse genre that is “metal”. Who knows, that 15 year old tiktok kid in a few years might be blasting Obituary and Nile because they heard a Deftones song.
My theory is that the generation of Emo kids growing up in the early 2000’s were alittle too young to appreciate their style and now they are being rediscovered by those now adult Emo kids and social media has helped that a lot.
Lol what don't think Deftones overlapped with emo.
When I was kid in high school in the 90s, right when “Dazed and Confused” came out, classic rock got real popular and all the parents were stoked their kids thought their music was cool. I always thought it would be cool when my kids would start discovering bands like Radiohead or Sleep, or Melvins or whatever I thought was rad growing up. Lol, my kids are listening to The Who and MC5. Straight skipping over the 90s and 80s and right into my parents generation of rock and roll. Dammit.
Emo kids liked Emo music tho. The Used was on the other side of the spectrum around the time White Pony came out.
Mhmm. I am a big fan since 2003 but even became an emo kid afterwards. Don't know
The fact that we still are so confused by people listening to music from across the musical spectrum is wildly absurd. It’s seems really reductive to assume that people are that myopic in their tastes.
All the young, stoner, edgy zoomers love some quality shoe gaze to vibe to
it's so depressing for the future
Deftones were never just another nu metal band. There is very little that is nu metal about any of their albums after Around The Fur. Even ATF had significant trip hop and especially shoegaze influence. Literally all of their albums after that are closer to shoegaze and alt rock than nu metal.
Deftones haven't been nu metal since around the fur. After that, they zigged, while nu metal zagged. White pony showed their range. These nerds are correct.
I remember seeing the video for 7 words in high school (im 44) . That breakdown gave me the biggest chub. I was a fan, instantly.
“Back to school (Mini-maggot)” from the _White Pony_ special edition was absolutely nu-metal… and they hated that their label put it on the re-issue.
Even around the fur mostly ditched the nu metal vibes for the shoe gaze vibes
Fuck yeah 7 words goes off! (Still have absolutely no idea what Chino is saying though lmao)
Woops I thumbed up before I saw the chub remark..boo..lol
..but I suppose 7 words gave me a chub at the same time too lol
Wether you think their music is sexy or not is irrelevant. The girls in my high school did and I was just grateful I didn’t have to knock boots to Disturbed.
They never stopped being popular. They had a couple “Numetal” songs but mostly the first album and like 2 songs after that. When Diamond eyes came out, you couldn’t go to any show no matter genre without hearing it in between ever bands set.
I really don't think Deftones ever was "just another numetal band". I remember back in the early 00's during the new metal craze, Deftones always had that special spot and everybody seemed to love them whether it was punk metal or numetal fans. When white pony dripped it was instantly understood that this was going to be one of these albums that define a generation.
Honestly, I think he's so obsessed with trolling Deftones fans that he ends up just looking like he is totally clueless about the one thing he's supposed to be something of an authority on, music
well said. decades later and i still remember buying and listening to white pony on day 1.
Even the classic metal fans and groove metal fans respect them
Deftones are obviously massively popular now but they were decently influential back in the day too. I’m pretty I heard somewhere that Finch started as a Deftones cover band. Glassjaw were definitely Deftones fans and they toured together at least once.
Saw that show where glassjaw were promoting everything you want to know about silence. Great fucking bands
@@Potatoenfuego I lost a shoe in the pit at that show, it was so fucking awesome
@OnyxSkiesXIX I think chino lost a shoe too lmao. He was complaining about it onstage cuz someone stole his shit
i saw that tour in phx in high school (i believe it was the celebrity theatre). the stage was round & rotated. absolutely phenomenal show!
Not surprised somebody lost a Shoe at a Shoegaze concert....
My friend has a 12 year old daughter. Her favorite band is Deftones. Found them on her own somehow. She also loves Led Zeppelin.
Country girls... Finn out here trying to save all the girls with bangs for himself
Finn is still a virgin
All of us grew up obsessed with Deftones, and we played it around my kid his whole life. Now he plays guitar and totally rips Deftones- and he's really happy that they're getting popular. Also when "Never Let Me Down Again" by Depeche Mode was on the first episode of The Last of Us he was THRILLED- I am raising him right lol
Funny, I'm 39 now and am rediscovering Deftones again, I kind of fell off them after the 2003 album when I started getting into older music. But since picking up the bass again and learning Chi's basslines I really appreciate them.
Their collab with Belching Beaver Brewery put the band logos and name everywhere. It renewed my interest.
My wife actually got me into Deftones in college. I’m still a fan to this day. Lol
I watched that same video this morning, they're spot on!! Your commentary put it over the top!!!🤣🤣🤣 great take Finn!! 👌
LMAO cookie monster pajamas, dude you're so spot on
Timeless music especially be quiet and drive far away. Makes me sad, angry and happy at the same time it's a rollercoaster. Most of the sadness is kind of nostalgic tbh
Nostalgic is the first thing that springs to mind when I hear that song
Trippie Redd used them on one of his albums and ZillaKami has a bunch of stuff that sounds like Deftones samples, whether they are or not. That can't hurt.
Genius. Divert attention to the pop country/fox girls leaving all the BTGG for yourself. I like the way you think.
"My very favorite band in the whole world..."
The sass is real lol.
Been a huge fan of the band since white pony was released. I was 16 years old, in a Christian school. I use to always get detention for giving the other kids my discman and metal CDs. 2000 was huge. The disks that got the most play time were Toxicity, Follow the Leader, Significant Other, The battle of LA, Ænema, and White Pony. 15 second skip protection. What a time to lose your virginity, which I obviously never did.
This video popped up in my suggestions yesterday and I swear I thought, "Finn needs to see this." 🤣
"fkng to nu metal"
I can't tell if that's the funniest combination of words ever or the most nightmare inducing
I literally wore track suits to school to show my Korn loyalty. Or Liberty spiles like Wayne static
As a fellow old who just turned 34 I believe the current mixing of genres that zoomers do in their music today has led them to like deftones.
I watched this video the other day. Nice reaction Finn
Deftones are awesome and Finn has always underrated them, similarly when he did his video about the 90s he didn't mention ok computer / Raidiohead.
I never knew Deftones were trending on tiktok until a few months ago tbh, I found out of deftones 1 year ago from a friend who was a fan of their music
Same! I got into them from my oldest brother who was in town, he was showing me his new car and was playing Rosemary and I was hooked
With people having being exposed to older cultures & different musical styles through tik tok, Gen z are now just recycling every trend / sub genre that was before their time instead of innovating / appreciating newer styles of music. Trends come and go. Soon the e girls will be discovering the mid 2000’s metalcore / post hardcore scene that was post nu metal era. Its like we’re living through a resurgence of popularity in bands that have music that is almost 30 years old 😂 you can definitely tell who is a fake deftones fan by how much they appreciate self titled era. Self titled is just too unpalatable / brutal for the passive casual listener. Deftones was never a band to associate with an aesthetic because almost every album is dynamically different and experiments time & time again.
Deftones are like Limp Bizkit having baby with Depeche Mode
You nailed it holy shit
Had Deftones not brought Snapcase on tour in the late 90’s I might have never found the hardcore scene.
Definitely was sinning in high school with Deftones on in the background. Guess I’ve always been an edgy hipster.
Finn doesn't smoke weed, that's why he has a blindspot for Deftones
"You should be getting it on to Click Click Boom" 🤣🤣... pictured/heard it and I've been dead 🤣😵 ever since. Thank you for the good laugh, love your videos!
I first saw them in '98. Didn't see them again until 2017 on their tour with Rise Against. I was expecting to see mostly my age people there (40's) like I have at most shows from bands that were big in the 90's/early 2000's. I found it odd that the vast majority of the crowd were college age kids. I was surprised they even knew who Deftones were. As Finn stated they were not a fringe band by any means in the Nu Metal era but they were far away from being the most popular. They have always been one of my favorites and I'm more than happy to see a new generation of fans enjoy their music.
Keep in mind that Deftones also inspired Deathcore back in the br00tal days
Deftones are an amazing band, I’m sorry you can’t enjoy them for some reason Finn. Signed, fan from the start.
Its just something about chinos voice ive always found attractive
I remember the first time I ever heard them was on Dave Mirra Pro BMX on PS1. I always loved be quiet and drive but never had an album until 2010. Then I went back and listened to everything and they've been my favorite band since. Its good to see them get some recognition.
Yo same here man every time I hear that song I can’t help but think of that game
This year I'll get my Deftones tattoo. My favorite band since Diamond Eyes. I'm so hyped.
I discovered Deftones when I first got on Spotify. I totally missed out on them in the early 2000s and late 90s. I think I chose Tool Radio or Nu-Metal radio and one of their songs came up in the queue. I looked up their music and liked them ever since. So I wonder if their increased popularity could also be due to Spotify algorithms and people just liking their songs when they popup in playlists or radio selections? Then again, I guess you’d have to already like similar artists for them to pop up at all
Everytime I watch a video that isn't from your channel you post a commentary on it the next day. Every path leads me back to you ❤️
I don’t know if it was where I was an hour and a half down the 99 from Sacramento. But from 95 to 2000 Deftones was life. Then the same kids got into Glassjaw, At the Drive in and Finch.
we already established that you're nerd but today we can confirm you're a furry too
Ohms got me into deftones
Not from TikTok or samples
It seems that there are 2 different sets of fans for Deftones: Those before Diamond Eyes and those after Diamond Eyes. Basically the old 90's/2000's fans and the new 2010's/2020's fans.
I still remember the first time I listened to Deftones. It was 2000 and I was 19 at the time. ‘Change in the House of Flies’ came on the radio and I was captivated. It was so unique and beautiful. I bought White Pony right away. The first time I heard Digital Bath, I nearly cried. That wall of sound during the chorus combined with Chinos voice moved me like no other song had ever moved me before. And it remains as my all time favorite song by them.
I became an avid fan and wanted to see and read as many articles about them as I could. I remember reading an article where Chino admitted to refusing to be part of the Family Values tour that was blowing up at the time with all the other nu-metal bands. They didn’t wanna be part of it. And for that, I respected them even more. They went a completely different direction as their albums progressed.
When you hear a band that has a vibe that’s difficult to describe but resonates on an emotional level, I feel like you’ve discovered something very special. For me, that’s Deftones. Unlike any band I’ve ever heard. And they’ve had a very consistent thriving career. I’m 42 now and I’m constantly rediscovering all their older albums as well as anticipate any new material they release. Deftones will always have a place in my heart ♥️
Dbz got me into them . From the lord slug and the cooler movie
why do people like deftones you ask? cuz Chino has a beautiful voice and soothing
Deftones is popular because they’re the stoner band and literally all the weed kids think they’re the pinnacle of music after rediscovering them
Finn I’m gonna have to cut you off at “that’s one hot mouse”
I don’t use TikTok but it’s funny that sometimes my music habits align with their trends. Back when I was a kid in the early 2000s I paid more attention to KORN, LB, LP, SOAD, and Evanescence but since the pandemic started I decided to listen to the groups of the era that I ignored like Mudvayne, Slipknot, Deftones, Static-X, and Disturbed, so far I’ve enjoyed them all.
They haven't gone away at all and also Chino keeps his profile high with Crosses as well.. Also they just put out great records.
In the 90s we were much happier with just being alive ... The internet has made Kids today sad, and misery loves company. It was the same with The Smiths
As a kid who grew up in the 2000s, I remember seeing movies from the 90s and practically every movie made it seem like kids back then where on the verge of suicide
Is there a stat that supports your statement?
This is the most called out I’ve felt by one of your videos lol
"That's one hot mouse!" This will forever be the phrase I associate with you. Every time I get a notification for your new vid the first thing I will think is that's one hot mouse.
I liked it better back in the mid 2010s when Deftones wasn't very relevant and I felt cool because only a few people I knew listened to them. Now I no longer feel special because the only thing I had going for me was my taste in music, and now tiktok is slowly taking that away from me.
Yeah it wasn’t cool back then, and it sucks cuz I’ve wanted a white pony tattoo for the longest time now I doesn’t think I should lmao.
same girl same
Yeah the Gore era was their lowest point but Deftones was always one of the better bands that came out of the nu-metal era from the mid-late 90s. Korn and Limp Bizkit was more popular but Deftones always stayed relatively underground.
tik tok isnt taking away ur music taste. you get to look at it differently than they do and you knew them longer which gives you an upper hand (no trying to devalidate new fans tho)
@@jag-stang29 I know what you mean. Also, I never want to be a cringey gatekeeper, I'm just annoyed and sad that I no longer have all these not-so-well-known, interesting bands I can share with people I want to impress. Ultimately it's fine because most of the people showing their new appreciation for Deftones seem to be young goths/alt teens and adults. Even if I think that some of those people are cringe, it shouldn't affect my enjoyment of that artist.
Been into deftones since the summer sanitarium tour with Metallica back in 03!! Glad they’re getting even bigger than ever. They are the perfect combination of music sub genres
I'm a new Deftones fan (got into them in 2019) and I remember hearing how respected they were when White Pony came out.
I first learned about the tones in the queen of the damned movie.
I was maybe 8. Definitely shouldn’t have been watching some of those movies at the time, but the early 2000’s was truly undefeated.
I got into them more when I got the diamond eyes album in high school my sophomore year. Went back to their discography and they’ve been a staple in my rotation since. I’m 28 now. Great memories.
It was weird being a fan in 2010 when they were right in the middle of their career and weren’t really “huge” like they were years prior.
Deftones are awesome!! They've always been good and they didn't sell out! They make consistently good albums!
First rule: never call deftones just another nu metal band. 😆
It's awesome to see younger people getting into deftones. Their white pony album was ahead of its time and I think it catches the tastes of nowadays young people. The sound of white pony is kinda similar to s lot of new sounds like lo-fi stuff

I’ve been a huge fan of them since I was recording videos on vhs in 97 from MTV and I recorded My Own Summer. I was hooked and bought Around the Fur. Deftones are awesome Finn, they have displayed some range in their career. They have a lot of bangers.
I have noticed how their listener count has skyrocketed from about 2m a month to almost 7 in the last 4 years. Its definitively because deftones is spreading through emos on tiktok.
Weird, I'm gen z and discovered Deftones through the old Dbz movies (and metal in general) as a small child, not TikTok thank God💀
Also yes the sexy moaning is what's cool about deftones
When you have Metalhead parents. 😅

@@DigitalBath306 its a great record, you should give it some more time, it`ll grow on you.
Ohms is great 🤘🏽🤌🏼🔥
@@DigitalBath306 I'm with you, bud. Gore was weaksauce. Especially as a follow up from KNY.
@@eugenesyvokon6145 i tried to force myself to like it many times, but the production is just so terrible. I remember putting the CD into my car right after i bought it and i thought its a wrong version or something
many songs kinda start good but went into nowhere like LMIRL
