As someone who grew up quite heavily attached to the Nu metal scene. I have to say that the White Pony album really severed the ties between Deftones and the nu metal scene. It was very alienating on the first listen because I wanted something more familiar and within the realms of what they had produced previously.
They experimented and alienated a lot of their core fans with that album. It took a few years for fans to embrace the new sound and now it is revered as a blueprint for the countless bands with the loud and soft dynamic and the dreamy clean vocals.
Even emo took a leaf out of Deftones white pony at the time. Bands like Finch, Thrice, The Used and Dead Poetic.

I grew up loving Deftones because when nu metal was huge, Deftones was the more cool vibey band even though they didn’t hit the same numbers of popularity. But over time they were the band that influenced literally every metal band that came up in the 2000s. Fast forward 15-20 years and you now have a generation of people who hadn’t heard of Deftones, but grew up listening to bands who were influenced by them…it’s like a Nirvana fan discovering Pixies…or a Deftones fan discovering Bad Brains and The Smiths.

Deftones is music for people who are horny and depressed. That’s why I like em.
In all seriousness though, I do think the fact they went straight into experimenting with other types of music helped, especially when nu metal was getting stale. They just didn’t sound the same as anyone else in the genre. They weren’t really afraid of “alienating” old fans which actually made them bigger. Consistently putting out quality music, even if you didn’t like them necessarily, it’s hard not to appreciate the heart they put into every release. They also are an easy gateway band, they have music anyone can enjoy even if you don’t like heavier music. I also think Chino’s vocals are intriguing, they’re not polished and rough around the edges but there’s a raw emotion you feel from his delivery and I’ve always been mesmerized by his vocals especially on White Pony. Songs like Digital Bath, RX Queen, Knife Prty, Change; his vocals actually blend into the music and create an extra instrument. Some of the “punisher” fans, as you call them, have faded into the background and those of us that are more than willing to hear our teenage relative blasting a quality metal band like Deftones with such a deep and diverse discography is honestly a nice thing. Tiktok did some good and clearly piqued interest and hopefully it makes them dive deeper into such a similarly diverse genre that is “metal”. Who knows, that 15 year old tiktok kid in a few years might be blasting Obituary and Nile because they heard a Deftones song.

Been a huge fan of the band since white pony was released. I was 16 years old, in a Christian school. I use to always get detention for giving the other kids my discman and metal CDs. 2000 was huge. The disks that got the most play time were Toxicity, Follow the Leader, Significant Other, The battle of LA, Ænema, and White Pony. 15 second skip protection. What a time to lose your virginity, which I obviously never did.

With people having being exposed to older cultures & different musical styles through tik tok, Gen z are now just recycling every trend / sub genre that was before their time instead of innovating / appreciating newer styles of music. Trends come and go. Soon the e girls will be discovering the mid 2000’s metalcore / post hardcore scene that was post nu metal era. Its like we’re living through a resurgence of popularity in bands that have music that is almost 30 years old 😂 you can definitely tell who is a fake deftones fan by how much they appreciate self titled era. Self titled is just too unpalatable / brutal for the passive casual listener. Deftones was never a band to associate with an aesthetic because almost every album is dynamically different and experiments time & time again.

I first saw them in '98. Didn't see them again until 2017 on their tour with Rise Against. I was expecting to see mostly my age people there (40's) like I have at most shows from bands that were big in the 90's/early 2000's. I found it odd that the vast majority of the crowd were college age kids. I was surprised they even knew who Deftones were. As Finn stated they were not a fringe band by any means in the Nu Metal era but they were far away from being the most popular. They have always been one of my favorites and I'm more than happy to see a new generation of fans enjoy their music.

I think I chose Tool Radio or Nu-Metal radio and one of their songs came up in the queue. I looked up their music and liked them ever since. So I wonder if their increased popularity could also be due to Spotify algorithms and people just liking their songs when they popup in playlists or radio selections? Then again, I guess you’d have to already like similar artists for them to pop up at all

I still remember the first time I listened to Deftones. It was 2000 and I was 19 at the time. ‘Change in the House of Flies’ came on the radio and I was captivated. It was so unique and beautiful. I bought White Pony right away. The first time I heard Digital Bath, I nearly cried. That wall of sound during the chorus combined with Chinos voice moved me like no other song had ever moved me before. And it remains as my all time favorite song by them.
I became an avid fan and wanted to see and read as many articles about them as I could. I remember reading an article where Chino admitted to refusing to be part of the Family Values tour that was blowing up at the time with all the other nu-metal bands. They didn’t wanna be part of it. And for that, I respected them even more. They went a completely different direction as their albums progressed.
When you hear a band that has a vibe that’s difficult to describe but resonates on an emotional level, I feel like you’ve discovered something very special. For me, that’s Deftones. Unlike any band I’ve ever heard. And they’ve had a very consistent thriving career. I’m 42 now and I’m constantly rediscovering all their older albums as well as anticipate any new material they release. Deftones will always have a place in my heart ♥️
