    Merry Christmas VASAviation!
    Question. When landing a twin engine Jet aircraft with one engine shut down, how bad would the reverse thrusters throw the aircraft to one side or the other? With a long enough runway, might the pilots decide to not use reverse thrust with one shut down? I understand that they are critical in slowing the aircraft upon landing rather than overheat the brakes. These are just curious thoughts that came to mind while watching and listening to the video. Thank You for another great production VASAviation.

    Fortunatly everything worked out fine. In the simulation we could see that the reverse thrus of engine 1 was activated upon touchdown. No I might be wrong, but does anyone know whether thrust reversers are applied on single engine landing? Reverse thrust on only one side may pull the plane off of the runway, especially on wet runways.

    • @GigsVT
      @GigsVT 4 года назад +3

      yes I thought that was probably an error as well.

    • @cameronascott7629
      @cameronascott7629 4 года назад +3

      yea you can use single reverse thrust. But the length of the runways allow for you to just brake. The shortest one is about 8300 ft however I think he landed on 16 (around 11800 ft or so)

    • @VASAviation
      @VASAviation  4 года назад +5

      No, it's not an error

    • @HiddenWindshield
      @HiddenWindshield 4 года назад +3

      Typically, in a single-engine landing, both reversers are deployed. The reversers themselves provide some wind resistance just by themselves, even if the engine itself is off. But the main reason is that there have been instances of pilots forgetting which engine is down, and accidentally doing something with the bad/good engine that was supposed to have been done with the other one, so pulling both levers eliminates the risk that the wrong lever is pulled.

      @mikeL5183 4 года назад +1

      No real need to read - look up Mentour Pilot on RUclips.
      Bottom line - airplanes are designed to be able to climb out in case of engine failure after V1. V1 is the final decision speed on the runway (not enough runway left to safely stop the plane from that speed so they must continue to rotation). They mount 2 engines for efficiency and durability (2 engines running 75% thrust for takeoff will last longer than 1 engine running 100% thrust) as well as redundancy. There are also altitude restrctions when running only one engine based on the design of the plane.

      An engine failure is always an emergency even though the landing will be somewhat normal.
      If nothing else, ATC knows they cannot order a go-around plus with reduced reverse thrust, the rollout will be longer than usual.
      Also, there's a very small chance of a fire if there's fuel and/or oil leaking and the reduced airflow allows for ignition.
