  • Freee Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 115 - The Colonel - One of Ben Cartwright's old war buddies who claims to be a business tycoon developing a new territory, woos a wealthy Virginia City widow and jeopardizes a Ponderosa land deal.
    The Colonel
    Director: Lewis Allen
    Writer: Preston Wood
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 6 January 1963 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
"The Colonel" is habitual liar Frank Medford, an old friend of Ben Cartwright. Now a poverty-stricken travelling salesman, Frank is determined to convince everyone that he is as successful as Ben. Thus, Frank tells one of his celebrated whoppers, claming to be a millionaire. It takes the love of a good woman-to be exact, Emily Colfax (Hellena Westcott)-to cure Frank of his chronic prevarications. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"An old friend from the army John Larkin arrives in Virginia City and Lorne Greene welcomes him. Larkin also gets a warm reception from Helen Westcott a well to do 30 something woman.
Larkin is nothing more than a traveling salesperson, but he's in the Harold Hill tradition and blows a lot of smoke. He inadvertently creates a lot of ill will toward the Ponderosa with his tall tales.
Larkin and Westcott are a fine romantic pair who prove in that line from the song, 'love isn't just for the young'." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

I always liked this episode since the first time it aired when I was a child. John Larkin delivered such a nuanced, superb performance as Frank Medford. Some of the richest man post Civil War bought a bit of land or stock and reinvested every cent into new land or stock while living off the cheap land. The only luxury back then was equipment, food, wood etc. was plenty, especially when it was your land.

People moved very frequently if they failed at something men like Rollo 800s-900s by most accounts started with very little if not nothing as he was not a son of gentry but he founded Normandy & sired William the Conqueror who would conquer England & the sons of Tancred (Normans but not Rollo's descendants) took Italy in the East. That is his legacy, but he didn't settle in Normandy until his 50s.

Dan Blocker often played a blacksmith in other acting roles before Bonanza and during. The two movies he starred in, he played a blacksmith. I guess being big and strong he fit the part.

The colonel is a good looking man but has definitely dental issue to solve! What I noticed through all episodes many actors seem to suffer from the same problem; I wonder why : is the dental fees were so expensive at that time??

    • @aaraar4055

They didn't bother much about teeth back then. While I was a kid growing up, well after Bonanza finished airing, so many of my mates had vampire teeth and never bothered about it.

What's the point in lying when truth is always revealed? How can you trust a person that easily? My mother's paternal grandfather was an army colonel but not a man of love. I've never seen a picture of him, only heard about what he did. Everybody disliked him. I wonder why he believed he was so great.

Isn't it amazing to live in a time one can learn so many indications of ancestors pasts. I had tried before, but finally other peoples' research made it possible and a window opened into a multifaceted/ multii dimensional story. Some good, and some bad, but not too much was boring.
