Always wanted a remastered Hang-On game with say the Outrun 2 style graphics Never owned a Saturn but saw this on a promotional VHS back in the day. First time here and great video
*Let's hit the 1,000 sub mark!* *Review correction: This game does support the 3D analogue controller!* It pretty much sucks on this game but still....
Well that's not strictly true there mate. this game doesn't really support the 3D controller in the truest sense, because although it works, its only because of the Steering wheel support, just like it works with a great number of racing game that supports the wheel, so yes you can use it, there was never an intention for that to be the case and for that reason, obviously isn't optimised, but tbh, it's usually reasonably playable on most games, not a terrible experience, might actually be pretty good to a newcomer, but after 27 years playing Sega Rally and Daytona with the D-Pad, it feels very Foreign to me.
Like others have said, this game needs the wheel. It transforms instantly into a really good racer. Add in 1st person view and the sense of speed really makes it a fun racer for me.
The US and JP version of this game both support the 3D Control Pad. Not sure about the PAL version. Steering with the analog stick definitely fixes the "jerky" controls, especially if you continually press up and use quarter circles to the left or right to lean the bike smoothly. I also brake the bike while keeping the gas button on. Basically, I never lift off the gas the entire time I'm racing. This "power brake" method makes for smoother deceleration. Using the 1st person cam and removing the HUD is also highly recommended. By doing these things, this game goes from trash to a smash hit. Love this game! P.S. The US version is the overall best because you can turn OFF the Powerslide Effect in the Options.
I own the Japanese version of the game, Hang On GP '95, it does support the analog pad. The dpad controls are, as you say, touchy. Analog is smoother and gives you much more control over the angle of the bike, while the racing wheel is better still and feels spot on with the tilt of the machine. One of my favourite racers of the generation, I'd take it any time over Manx TT (the fact that there are only two songs in that game which aren't even a full lap long drives me nuts).
released the same year than daytona usa, sega rally and ridge racer revolution. so definitely with all the competition at this era, not the first choice.
Yeah, my experiences from that terrible wheel have not been good though! lol I'm going to have to get another wheel to try with future racers though I guess!
Loved Hang On on the Master System back in the day.
Great video. I'd highly recommend getting a pop filter for your mic. The P's, D's and B's coming in strong in my headphones.

@Itsmuchmore Yes sega should have made a next gen sequel to this game similar to outrun 2 and 2006 coast to coast.
This game was DESIGNED for the Saturn wheel. It really opens up the game play. A lot of people assume the controls are broken.

The PAL one does support the 3d pad too, I've no idea how I messed up when I played it then recorded the footage thinking it didn't!

I'm going to have to try the JP version to see what analoguie is like then!

Did I hear you can use the Saturn steering wheel with it?

Would've been nice if you showed us what the other driving options were like. Noticed you had drifting and torque (I think?) off.
It plays a lot better with the Saturn steering wheel .
