This is a really sad video. I grew up on the north side of Youngstown on West Federal street by the B & O railroad that was my back yard. Once the steel industry went bust well that was the beginning of the end of once great city. My father came here from Italy work in the steel mills as did many other immigrants. I graduated from Rayen in 1960 and was fortunate to get a football scholarship to Kent State which enabled me to leave and start a new life and family.
This was put together so well it's really sad that Y town is the wwy it is today. Unfortunately good things dont last forever. Thank You for bringing back memories
Denise Roberts I am from Youngstown and graduated from High School in 73' . I remember wonderful my childhood and is so sad when I go back there to visit. So happy for the memories though.
@@2000Betelgeuse You mean the union and Carter, it was Carter who refused to help the steel industry and in turn tanked the city... google black monday jimmy carter...
@@2000Betelgeuse That’s a really broad brush, Betelgeuse, especially considering the unions and Reagan were on opposite sides of virtually every issue that involved working people. Surprised you chose to neglect steel industry management and the investors who were, in fact, the most influential groups that contributed to the fall of the steel industry in the US. The essential problem was the self-inflicted wound of corporate arrogance by neglecting to modernize plant facilities after WWII while Japan and Germany were restarting their steel industries from scratch. Unions demanded higher wages and benefits while management drew huge salaries and bonuses. Once the foreign competitors entered the market with a decade later with quality steel at lower prices, the fate of the top-heavy management and antiquated mills was sealed. The Carter administration offered retraining to displaced workers, but most Youngstowners clung to the fantasy that the mills would be back. Younger workers went to work at GM Lordstown. Eventually, the same kind of arrogant corporate mismanagement removed that plant as well.
@2000Betelgeuse Which union are you talking about? The "Reagan Revolution" was awful for the entire rust belt, not just Youngstown and under Reagan unions became ever weaker and smaller and less relevant in America. Without strong unions Reagan gave us Home Depot and Wal-Mart jobs.
For several years, Youngstown, Ohio was my favorite vacation destination. Starting in 1999 I attended about 10 different music festivals at the Nyabinghi. The biggest of these was the annual Emissions from the Monolith festival held over Memorial Day weekend. I always enjoyed my times in Youngstown and the surrounding areas. Now that the Nyabinghi is gone I wonder if I'll ever have another reason to visit.
Youngstown has a bad rep that is undiserved. If you're not doing something you shouldn't be doing you shouldn't really worry about your safety no matter where you go. I lived there until I was 24 (I'm 26 now) and was never paranoid about my safety. Youngstown is and forever will be my favorite city out of the many I've lived in with all the history and how beautiful it really is. If only the city leaders could get some businesses there, they might have something.
Wow...I grew up in girard...have lived all over the country...now live in Cali...your seriuosly excited to move back to Warren?Well...I hope you find your happiness there! I'd never move back to Ohio..love Va Beach though!
ce hayes He sure is he is a classmate of mine at South High School and played at local churches and came off the road to perform at or high school talent show which was so nice of him. The list of famous people from my hometown is too long to list. P.S. If you ever make it there don't leave without getting some Belleria 🍕 on Wick Ave and picking up some Staples Bar-b-Que😍
All these pics are from a time when Youngstown was still fairly a nice place to be, now it's just one big ghetto. It's a sad thing, driving down Market Street now almost looks like a third world country!
i used to live in the apartment building to left of the this building 2:49 which is Stambaugh Auditorium. U can only see the awning from the apartment building. It was a really cool place to live and beautiful view of the Auditorium. That was in 1988. I wouldn't dream of living there now. It's a shame.
What has happened in Youngstown is not unique at all. It’s what happens to many one industry towns. Whether it’s steel or textiles or even a military base, if that prime revenue source ceases to feed the area, a natural deterioration begins. Once the mills closed for good that also took down the businesses that supported the mills providing all manner of products and services. All those jobs went away and so did a lot of people. So the better paying jobs left leaving low paid jobs. If you own an apartment building you’d have to lower your rent to what folks can pay based on their lower wages. Neither they nor you now have the money to maintain the property as you once could so it deteriorates. Like a cancer the poverty spreads in a self propelling cycle. There’s simply too much that was built during the good years to be maintained with the population being half what it was then.
The Sheriton Inn Youngstown West was NEVER in Youngstown ! It sits on the Austintown side of Meridian Road. Thought everyone knew the yellow line is the dividing line between The City Of Youngstown and Austintown(ship). Just the real facts !
Reminds me of a British Mill town or single industry town built on that particular business . Rough and ready, everyone straight from school n into the factory. Hard work but decent pay, good community cos they are not rich but they have enough to eat, dress, live, party well. Any one struggling? Well back then they could afford to feed and shelter them till they got themselves own their feet. That's sadly what's missing and leads to social probs like mass homelessness drugs; crime. Not being able to finance a struggling member instead of throwing them on the tip. It has a big affect on society self sufficiency. Positive of course. It's a shame workers struggle to keep their own bills paid!!! That's a crime working and struggling to pay basic bills should not happen. It's so unfair.
I ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO I GREW UP IN YOUNGSTOWN AND STILL LIVE IN THE AREA . WHEN TIME ALLOWS FEEL FREE TO VIEW A PROJECT I CREATED TITLED YOU ARE YOUNGSTOWN AND WE ARE YOUNGSTOWN AS SEEN ALSO ON RUclips . THANKS
Look at the pictures and it looks like a thriving cultural center. The Playhouse, Stambaugh, Powers. Theiving politicians on the take, back room deals were all expected. Make sure theres enough to kick up to Chuck they said. Last one out of Ytown, remember to shut off thelights!
I dunno, David . I think things are changing for the better . Over the last few years it seems like there's more good news than bad news , although there's still plenty to fix. There's a feeling that the future will be better than the average of the last 30 years . A neighborhood I know was a bit "dicey" in 2008 , now its as safe as anywhere. People are spending money on major rehab projects for their houses . 2013 murders to date are only 8 , which is the lowest number since 1978 .

Not a single pictures of any of the steel mills which were the heart and soul of Yotown in 1973.

So in 1973 was there a steel industry or not?? Couldn’t tell from this video.
Yes there was. The first of the shutdowns came in 1977.
