Ok I been trying to learn this art for a long time I've tried getting jobs at all the local shops and let's just say they aint been friendly about teaching. So I have read tones of stuff and then found your channel and I gotta give you your props your vids are great up close and personal and very helpful I recently just mounted my 1st deer and iaint gonna win no show but I'm very pleased with the results and learned a few things along the way. So thank you for all you do but most importantly thank you for being willing to share your knowledge
Absolutely!
I would say look and see if your state has a taxidermy club or association because a lot of the time you can find people in the association will to teach you where as you go to a random old time taxidermist who will not want to teach you
I appreciate that I don't have to speed up the speed of the video in order to not get bored. You talk perfectly fast enough for me to not get bored,
Appreciate that ha! After re-watching some of my older videos, I have certainly gotten better at editing out some of the yada yadas!
Thank you for walking through everything, especially the tanning/pickling process. This was so incredibly helpful.
You’re welcome! Thank you for the support!!
I'm excited to not have glue all over my hands! I LOVE the thread tuck at the end! Also going to try the ear butts. Thank you for all you do for us to learn! You're the best!!
Thank you!!
It's just THAT simple, eh? Like all craftsmen you have the skill and experience to make this look so easy. I'm sitting back here smiling to myself, as if I had just completed the task. Perfect contentment. Thank you very much for your time.
Thank you for watching!
Believe me it was my pleasure. Best wishes.
I'm new to taxidermy and your video was very helpful.
Thank you!
Love your videos, I’m just now getting into taxidermy, your videos have been very helpful and informative!
Thank you and I hope everything goes well!
this is very helpful and educational man, i can only hope to be on your level someday. there’s not a lot of people willing to teach their craft like this, so huge thanks to you!
Thank you!
I’m a taxidermist as u know and even though we have different methods I really enjoy watching these I just appreciate others talents and methods
Yeah it's really helpful knowing as many methods as possible. You never know when you might need something different
@@thecedarridgechronicles 100% and me I’m always open to trying new ways
Wish I had videos like this when I started. These are much more accessible than a DVD from Vandyke or McKenzie
By far the best tutorial Taxidermy video I have ever seen, well done. From Red fox Taxidermy in Australia.
Thank you and greetings from the USA!
Getting ready to mount my first deer and I’m going to follow your videos through the process so thank you for the videos!
Awesome! Good luck!
You are a true artist. So cool. Thanks for making this video
Thank you!
Gotcha. Thanks for all the awesome information! You’ve inspired me to take a shot at taxidermy! Keep it coming! We love it!!
Never get sick of these
I'd make one every day if I could do it and still get all my work done 😂
Man, I can't wait to spend endless hours on the couch watching your channel
I would really appreciate it. I know I spent endless hours in front of a computer editing content! 😆
Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for on “hiding the knot” ….. Thank Q!!!
Very informative video. Explained well. Looks like a very meticulous job. Thank you for sharing. Be Safe, and God Bless!
Can u do more of those shaving machine. I can watch it all day long. Very satisfying man
I definitely am this spring 🤙
Thank you very much for doing this video.
That was super cool and informative! You make it look so easy and do a great job!! Thank you for taking the time and extra work to film all that! Good luck with everything my friend!
Professionals always make it look easy 😂 just shot my 1st deer and it was absolutely a 1 of a kind deer, it will be heading off to a taxidermist.
I’m not that professional lol!
Dan enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing your mounting process.
Dan enjoyed your video. A good A to Z deer mounting video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills in taxidermy.
Thanks brother 👍
You have nearly got me to the point of trying to have a go at doing my own fallow mount. Just got to take the leap.
Give it a go!
Hello sir.its been 10 months since i spoke with you. Using the comment section.ive watched and watched watched your videos. I think I'm confadint enough now to go for it. I killed a really nice Arkansas buck in this past wknd.i have spent thousands and thousands over the course of my life on taxadermy. I'm hoping no more. I'm going for it. Please keep the videos coming. Thank you
Do it!! You got this!
You are a true craftsman. Beautiful work!
Thank you!
These videos are amazing. Thank you for all the details. My husband is an avid hunter. Just filled his buck tag Monday. We think we want to start taxidermy as a side gig and what better practice than his own deer? We’ve caped it out, just tonight we removed the skull, removed the antlers. We rolled it how you e suggested in other videos with ears and nose tucked in. But we put it in the freezer already until we were prepared for next steps, so to clarify, once we take it out of the freezer, we need to 1) thaw 2) turn ears 3) salt bath 4) pickle 5) deflesh??? 6) pickle again 7) neutralize?? I’m confused because I thought turning ears and defleshing went together but I see your ears are already turned when you use the machine.
It needs to be fleshed and the ears, nostrils, lips, and eyes need to be turned. Then salted overnight, salt bath, then start the pickling process. I shave the cape after 3 days in the pickle but that is to thin the hide. It had to be fleshed first thing before salting

Do this step first
As I’m continuing to watch I see that you said you now remove cartilage after tanning vs how you used to do it.
Understood! And I’ve actually watch that video twice now haha but I will be watching again to do next step. Thanks!
Awesome! My oldest son got his Huntin license this year and we’ve got our eye on 3 bucks for him. When he gets his first buck I’m gonna mount it. I’ve always wanted to do some taxidermy work. How cool would it be to do my son’s first buck! Thanks for the video!
That would be awesome
Enjoyed it very much long time deer hunter.
incredible work on the deer and such a great video thank you so much for making the video
This is an amazing video. Thanks for sharing your success
Daniel, Great work as usual, love the vid. I know you’re all about efficiency- look at the Nickey Bonura ear liners with ear butts from Jim Allred Taxidermy. May save you clay and time.
Same taxi that showed me those also showed me how to pre stitch the back of the cape before you slide it on, and honestly it did save me some headache on the stitching.
Hey I really enjoy your taxidermy videos that you post. Several months ago you did a video about the fleshing machine that you got. I was wondering if you could do another video about the learning curve to get the hang of it an about if it has helped your process be more efficient or not.
Will do
Few questons for you. Ive been watching your videos and just wanted some clarification.
1- You cape the deer out. Do you flesh with the machine or by hand first, before salting?
2- I understand you salt and roll the hide now, rather then the salt rack. How long do you let the rolled hide sit and drain? Do you re-salt and do it a second time?
Next is salt bath if needed, pickle for a few days, flesh, re-pickle, neutralize then tan right?
Cape, hand flesh, salt overnight, saltwater bath, pickle, shave, pickle, neutralize, tan
Thanks. Keep the videos coming. I am learning a ton. Much appriciated
These videos are great! Maybe I've missed it, but have you done a video on how to do small repairs such as repairing holes around the nose and eyes?
Yes there are several! Go to the taxidermy playlist and scroll through. You can get lost for days 😂
Thanks! I'll look through!@@thecedarridgechronicles
Awesome love your videos thanks for all the tips
I just realized from your work just how shitty the work of my last mount was with using a new guy due to new laws where we cant bring bone back across FL border
Next time you hunt out of state, take a #11 X-acto knife, a bone saw (or reciprocating saw) and some borax and watch my video on how to cape one off the head and remove the antlers. It is extremely easy and can be done in about 20-30 minutes even if you have never done it before. Once the skull cap is cleaned and boraxed, the rack can be brought back across state lines with the cape and you can take it to your regular guy 👍
First of your videos I'm watching found you from your comment on Amy's video the other day! ❤
Fantastic! Amy does awesome work. Very talented!
I do have a question... with the pickle can you layer the hides or does that lose to much on the ph?? I'm assuming you did them separate for that reasoning? Great video I have a very good feeling once I get my hunting license I'll be using your videos and your knowledge quite frequently so thank you for the knowledge and great videos
@austinvickymoore3656 I use a bulk pickle now. As long as the capes are good and clean when they go into the pickle the pH stays pretty stable. It isn’t a bad idea to do them separately when you get started though just in case there is a problem or a step you miss you won’t have trouble with multiple hides 👍 They can be layered to a point, but must be agitated daily and pH checked
Before you put the hide on the mold, what do you do with your tanned hide?
Do you rub extra tanning solution off?
Do you stretch it?
Thanks
I rinse it and towel dry. I hand stretch it back to it's original size before mounting
awesome video and very friendly and professional along the way! I have been trying to get myself to start a business in taxidermy for a long time time! What would you say it would cost me and how big of a place would i need to have a successful taxidermy shop? I just honestly have literally no clue at all lol but i subscribed and i do appreciate the insights
Everything I have is under $5000 and all you need is room enough for a mounting stand
Well thank you for the insights I 100% appreciate that and I do like your style so I will for sure try some of the things I learned in the video!! Would iI need any type of deep freeze and things like that?@@thecedarridgechronicles
Yes definitely a freezer
We enjoy watching your all your shows and have decided to do our first project which will be a pac mount. What process do you do for your scull caps and antler cleaning?
Thanks
Another awesome video man keep them coming.
Wow Daniel really impressed with your skills since getting that Fleshing machine! Also wish you had help in you shop or at least some one you could CHEW THE FAT WITH LOL! I know lame joke but hey Happy Memorial weekend and Thanks for another Great video.
Thanks for making this content. What are the first steps you do after the client drops off his cape/rack and leaves the shop? Directly to the freezer until you have time to flesh, or do you have to flesh right away? I'd be curious to know the intake process involved from drop off to fleshing. I've been considering a 1-man shop and have thuroughly enjoyed your videos Sir.
Man, you made the stitching look stupid simple. I have to use pliers to hold the need because I have push so hard to get the needle through. Is my hide to thick or am I using the wrong needle. I mean it's a job getting a needle through.
Guarantee you it’s the needle. I use a McKenzie taxidermy supply 1501 2.5 inch L-shaped curved needle. It has a bladed cutting tip
@@thecedarridgechronicles thanks man. You are single handedly teaching me taxidermy.
I have a question or 3 about tears in the deer ear I have. It's in the seam where the hair line is. Where the front skin meets the back skin. How would I go about fixing the tear and when is the best time to do so? Before it goes on the mount/install earliners or after and work into place the latest way? Also, I'd like to thank u for how descriptive u are and as well as giving great advise and demonstration in your videos. I'm attempting my first mount here for my son and would have been difficult if it weren't for how u show and do things. Thank u for that and also you're no doubt a heck of an artist.
With good adhesives such as Pro 1 hide paste or a 2 part ear liner adhesive you can just glue the ear liner in and work out the air and excess glue. It will hold it together before mounting
@@thecedarridgechronicles so glue the liner in and pinch the seam of the skin shut using the adhesive to do so where it's torn so the ear liner is enclosed? Pro 1 will hold it well?
What eyes are you using and do you always use the same eyes (besides size) for all your mounts? I'm new to taxidermy and plan on doing my own so your videos have been the best learning source at there. I really appreciate all that you do!
I use Payer dark unbanded unless someone wants something different. My favorite is Joe Meder liquid lens
Great job that was a big help
Just learning. Your video started with salted capes prior to putting in the pickling. Are these capes already fleshed? When and why was salt added. Was / Can the cape be fleshed and salted and put back in freezer until ready to mount. Thanks again.
There is a link in the description of the video that will take you to the process before tanning👍
Love your channel! I’ve completed four mounts and I get a little better results each time. I’m doing a mount for a friend currently and the old buck was a fighter, ears are jacked up a bit with a few tears. Any recommendations how I can fix the ears?
Turn them inside out and use gorilla glue gel to glue dryer sheet patches across the holes
Not trying too tell you your business, but it’s always wiser after tuning your flesher to start back cutting at the bottom of your cape.
That way if you have it to sharp, and something goes wrong, it will be on the bottom instead of cutting a hole up on the face area, are really any where on the upper part of the hide.👍
I definitely don't use any pressure just after tuning. I come in at an angle with little to no pressure a little at a time until I feel the angle that the blade tries to grab. Then I can either adjust the angle I shave or tune slightly different, similar to when I used to cut boneless pork and beef with a boneless ban saw without using a guard.
@@thecedarridgechronicles👍
Awesome job!
Thank you!
Dan wanted to thank you for all the videos and info you put out. I shot a nice 10 point last Friday here in Illinois and it will be my first attempt at doing a mount. My one question is what kind of needles to you prefer? Are there any to stay away from ?
Thanks Again Justin
The only ones I use are item #1501 in the McKenzie taxidermy supply book. 2.5 inch L shaped needle
This may be a strange question, but I’m curious if you keep your taxidermy room temperature controlled during the cold months? Not sure if it matters, or plays a role in the process. Thanks! Enjoying all your videos!
Yes I do. I have 3 brick gas wall heater. Definitely helps the drying process
What is the biggest bodied buck y'all have either mounted or harvested?
265lbs 14 Point. Shot him in NB Canada tracked him down in the snow over 4 days. Great Video! Im starting out in taxidermy now and have 3 black bears in my shop, one in the pickle.

@@mrgrork they are so delicious
what fleshing machine is that? I am just getting started on learning Taxidermy. Just completed my first deer, one of the biggest struggles was getting all of that membrane off the skin. That fleshing machine is taking it right off. I need to get one.
They don’t make this one any more but any of the Dakota machines are great
How much are you loving that fleshing machine man? Once I learned how to properly use mine I was in awe LOL
I don't know how I mounted a deer without it!
How much initial fleshing do you guys do before going into the pickle
@@frankpurciful7926 I remove all the red meat, fat, and sinew before salting. Basically, the plan is to get down to the hide so that the salt can penetrate
Sweet, thanks!
Great video, couple questions for you.
1. When doing floor pedestal mounts how do you go about attaching the threaded rod or square tubing insert? Also if the entire back is going to get covered in leather or whatever one wanted to do, how do you go about getting the cape right to the edge?
2. If you have a cape that is cut all the way down the back, would you recommend sewing most of the back up before putting it on the form or just see the entire back on if the form?
The floor pedestals come with the rod already in them and yes I finish the back of the customer wants. I do stitch together the back some before mounting if the cape is cut all the way
U may have mentioned this in other videos but after u get done tanning do u rinse it off before u freeze it and do u freeze it while it still wet thanks for all your videos they help tremendously
Leave it rolled up with the tan on it and freeze it. Don’t rinse it off until you are ready to mount 👍
This is amazing!! How can someone start doing this? Do u know if there Is classes i could take? Great job though btw, this is really cool and the details are great :)
There are a few taxidermy schools around and some taxidermists teach classes. I learned watching RUclips
@@thecedarridgechronicles okay thanks!!
Question: I pickled and tanned a hide. Cleaned tanning off after recommended time and froze. When I get it out to mount. Should I let it thaw and get it wet first then dry or just thaw and mount? Thanks. BTW I’m on deer 2 thanks to your videos. The first one I mounted immediately. This one I had to store for a short time.
You can thaw and mount if the tan is already washed off
Loved this video! I always wanted to do one of my own, maybe I'll give it a try? How long from start to finish did it take for you to complete?
It's about a 3 week process if you include tanning and drying time
Thanks for sharing your process - very helpful! Where did you get your fleshing / shaving wheel?
Thank you! It was a gift from one of my subscribers
So after you tan the hide and let it sit over night, is there anything else you do to it before you mount it on the form the next morning?
I really enjoy the videos . I wanted to know if you would be interested in tanning a few capes ? My regular job is in the roofing industry and I have just a handful of bucks to put together but cant find someone to wet tan I trust . Thanks
Man I just don't have time or I would
May be a dumb question, but do you ever do the cape itself or do folks always send the cape to you once completed?
I cape it off the skull myself and do all the tanning myself
I gotta get me a fleshing machine…game changer.
I never realized the importance until I got one. I used to spend hours fleshing capes. Last week I rough fleshed and split 19 and put 15 into a pickle. Monday I shaved every single one of them in 1 day. It took my average from 2-3 a week to 5 a week with less effort. I'll not ever go without one again!
Such a better end result too. Details show up much better I’m sure being able to get it that thin.
@@mtrcamo yeah better stretch and faster drying too
Great video, Where did you purchase the tool you used to tuck the eyes. Thanks
On Amazon. In the description of the video there is a link that will take you to all the products
Hello friends! A question, at the 11th minute of the video, which disk is used to remove the skin? What kind of disc. Is there a special machine to remove the skin like the one shown at minute 11 ? Thank you!
It is a fleshing machine
Yea good vid bro
Thank you!
The guy that does mine is done but he said it needs to dry for two weeks is that what you tell people once youre done? He also uses what looks like pool noodles stapled to the hide on the outaide to i assume help hold the hide in place?
I tell people they are “on a form” when mounted up. Then it’s about 2-3 weeks before they can be finished up, and yes some folks use backer rod to hold the hide into muscle detail
Do you have DVDs on mounting a deer head from start to finish that I can buy
I sure don’t. Just tons of RUclips videos
South Texas in da house!! Great work brotha!!! Really appreciate all the great videos and how to!! Where do you get them needles for the stitching?

Do you happen to have a link of the glue you used AND the ACID? Or where u can find it. Gonna try to do my first mount because why not thanks to your videos I feel confident in trying
Call Paul at Pro 1 Performance Chemicals and tell him you need professional hide paste and pickling acid. Tell him Daniel from The Cedar Ridge Chronicles sent you 👍
I belive I found it on Mckenzie website. The bottle says Mckenzie ultimate acid the safest and easiest acid for the professional taxidermist " would that be the right one to get?
@@MowGuy yes it is
Why do you leave the hides rolled up when salted instead of letting them drain overnight?
Rolling them with the skin sides touching keeps the salt from drying and falling off and the hide actually gets better salt absorption. I stand them on end so the fluids can drain rather than pool in the cape. It works great
I like it ❤

No it won’t. Mine comes straight from a hose
Can you spray triple thick krylon gloss over water-based paint
Yes you can
What kind of hide glue do you use? Where do you get it from?

Will a local skinner tan the hide for a mount and let the owner mount there own deer ?
Certain taxidermists might or you can send it to a tannery

Hey bud do you not put the milk crates on top of cape while in pickle anymore?
I was but I took them out for the video. Now I am doing a 75 gallon bulk pickle for 15 capes and I have a plastic pallet I cut to fit over all of it
What kind of clue do you use and where do you get it?
Pro 1 hide paste. You order directly from pro 1
So you flesh with fleshing wheel when cape is green then flesh again after pickle?
I just knife flesh before pickle then shave with fleshing machine during pickle
Great video! What tanning agent do you use?
I use Pro 1 brush on tan
@@thecedarridgechronicles thank you! I’ve been using the a different brush on but have issues with fox ears slipping. I will follow your method and hopefully keep it from happening.
Got a question for you sir! I’m getting into taxidermy and Wondering what your thoughts are on pressure washing fleshing. I did a few capes and It gets all the fat meat and everything off in little to no time at all. Not to mention shaves it for you practically lol… the final fleshing after pickle is practically just face. Ever done it or heard any negatives? Thanks !
I never have but I know a lot of people that do it with great results
@@thecedarridgechronicles good to hear. I do have another question and be straight up with me haha. When pressure washing a deer it gets almost all the grease and for lack of a better word “nasty” stuff off. Then after salting and some final fleshing, I have a hard
Time seeing the need to pickle? Doesn’t need shaving/thinning due to pressure washer and the salt sets the hair follicles as well. Why not just tan it and skip the pickle step? For a bear with more grease I could understand but a whitetail and since pressure washing is so versatile…. But not looking to be lazy just more efficient if possible. What’s your thoughts?
@@samueldeutscher the pickling process actually exchanges the fluids in the cape with the pickle and kills any and all bacteria. A clean hide is not necessarily a stable hide. Bacteria are very durable, even freezing only makes them dormant. Very important that they are all dead and when the cape is tanned there is zero tissue left that is susceptible to decay

ruclips.net/video/lsDILytVf2c/видео.html
Do you flesh before pickle or after pickle?
I knife flesh to remove the meat and fat first. Then I shave with a fleshing machine during the pickle. Then I shave it again to the desired thickness for mounting after it is completely tanned
do you ever put a gloss finish on the nose to make the nose look wet? also i noticed you did not put clay under the nose and chin on this one and another video you did.
Yes I use Krylon triple thick on the nose. I will add clay to build up the form slightly if the perfect size was not available for the cape. Also, on some forms the foam is so hard I will cut a larger slit for the lips to keep from busting the form while I’m tucking. I’m that case I will add a bead of clay in the lip slot to give me room to tuck while also filling in the extra gap created from the larger cut. On a softer form, I will make a very narrow cut and the flex in the form will actually pinch the lips together after it is tucked. Hope this helps!

I watched one of your other videos and you fleshed it before pickling/ tanning. So do you have to flesh it twice? I’m just kind of confused…
I didn’t used to have a fleshing machine. If you only knife flesh it has to be done before pickling.
How would I go about shaving the hide without a fleshing machine?
I used to thin mine with a scalpel as I was fleshing
