    Great video. Thanks very much for sharing your design and demonstrating the entire step-by-step process for making one. I'm also not a fan of the battery operated pumps. Any hiker who already uses a pack liner bag and NeoAir pad would benefit from having one these.

      Thanks for watching. I do think it works very well personally. You're not putting moisture or condensation inside the mat, which can cause mildew to grow inside. Its faster than blowing it up by mouth, and I'm not lightheaded and out of breath afterwards as an extra bonus!

    You should consider making and selling the washer for the wing valve. You could make a larger square with the proper sized hole in the middle. It’s easy to cut the outside dimensions to match whatever cap we could find, but getting the perfect fit to go over the valve is much more difficult without the proper tools.

      Thats not a bad idea. I don't have a 3d printer, but I think there might be a market for making the inflator as small, light, and user friendly as possible. I could print the body, and use the laser to cut out the washers.

    Definitely a good mod.
    I made three modifications: I attached the bottle cap assembly about 1 foot below the bag's opening so that when I roll the bag closed in my pack, the assembly is sealed within the roll. I just did not like having an opening at the bottom of my pack which MIGHT increase the chance of water making its way into the bag. Inflation is a little more work but manageable.
    Before attaching the cap assembly, I put a patch of duct tape on the bag at the attachment point. There is enough freedom between the cap and threads to attach with the thicker material. This significantly increases the durability of the assembly. I disassembled to check for damage and there was no visible damage like there was when I tested on the bag (trash compactor) material alone.
    I used the rubber from an old bicycle inner tube that I had lying around to seal around the valve. The hole in the rubber was about half the diameter of the valve. It has enough stretch to easily slide over the valve and holds very well while inflating.

    I'm interested to know if you thought about cannibalizing the supplied thermarest inflator sack valve and (maybe using aqua seal to) glue it to a nylofume bag?
    Maybe not worth the effort as the nylofume won't last forever though...

      I think there must be a good way to use the included one, since everyone already has one that they likely don't use. I'd prefer to try to find a way other than glueing it to a nylofume bag in case the bag needs to be replaced. They are amazingly strong, but I have had to replace them due to rips. My first one from my 2023 CDT through hike died about 900 miles in from overstuffing it with winter gear and lots of food for the San Juans.

      @@LynxOutdoors686 yeah I agree It would be good to reuse those valves when everyone with a themarest would have one... I might think about trying to do it with mine, if I do I'll let you know how it went! (It's a great shame the standard thermarest inflator bag isn't waterproof!) cheers!

      I did that with my STS pump sack, but I used a silpoly stuff sack that I use to compress my sleeping bag. I just glued it into the corner with some silicone glue from the inside. The thing is, my stuff sack is not meant to be waterproof; I just find that I can compress my synthetic quilt much more in the sack compared to stuffing it into the liner, so it is a win-win for me.

    This is great, thanks. Nice clear instructions. One question though, now your pack liner is no longer waterproof, I watched in the hope of seeing your solution to that major issue, are you going to use it "as is" or will your replace with a solid cap to retain waterproofness then switch out when using as the inflation bag?

    • @LynxOutdoors686
      @LynxOutdoors686  9 месяцев назад +1

      I've always just used it as is. The 2 backpacks I use most often these days are both made from waterproof Ultra 200 with taped seams. The packs themselves are nearly waterproof and the pack liner is my 2nd line of defense. So far, I haven't ever had issues with any moisture getting inside. A simple, temporary, fix would be simply putting a piece of tape over the opening if you were dealing with extreme wetness or water crossings.

      @@LynxOutdoors686 I whipped one up last night! I think what I'm going to do is carry a spare cap and swap it out with the inflater cap when required. My packs are not waterproof so the pack liner is required to be waterproof, especially in wet New Zealand. Thanks!

      @multisportscott that's a nice easy solution. Having a spare cap won't add much weight at all.
