Saucony Endorphin Speed 4: A Deep Dive into the Upper, Midsole, and Outsole for (potential) Marathon Racers
The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 has taken the running world by storm, lauded for its versatility and responsiveness. But how does it fare for the specific demands of marathon racing? Let's dissect the upper, midsole, and outsole to see if it truly lives up to its speed demon reputation.
Upper Breakdown
Fit: The Speed 4 boasts a breathable, zonal mesh upper that hugs the foot comfortably. Lockdown: The lacing system integrates well with the midfoot lockdown (semi-gusset tongue), providing a secure fit that minimizes heel slippage. This is essential for maintaining efficient form throughout a marathon. Breathability: The open mesh upper, even on the tongue, promotes excellent airflow, keeping your feet cool and comfortable even as the miles tick by. This is especially important for preventing hotspots and blisters during a longer race.
PWRRUN PB: The star of the show, the PWRRUN PB foam delivers a lively, responsive ride; that classic Saucony lattice structure in the foam rides on into 2024. It offers a good balance of cushioning and snappiness, propelling you forward with each stride. And don't forget the goodness of that nylon "plate," which is now winged throughout that bed of PEBAX foam. The nylon plate is way more flexible than any other CFP on the marketplace and may make your feet happier for 26 miles, or 13, or 6.
Nylon Plate: The nylon plate provides a subtle level of rigidity, enhancing energy return and propelling you through your gait cycle. This is particularly beneficial for maintaining pace in the latter stages of a marathon. Stack Height: With an 8mm drop and 36mm heel stack, the Speed 4 offers a moderate amount of cushioning without sacrificing responsiveness. This caters to a wider range of runners, although heel strikers might prefer a higher stack for impact absorption.
The outsole utilizes durable rubber, providing excellent traction on various surfaces, from asphalt to light trails. This is crucial for maintaining control and confidence, especially during fatigued strides later in the race.
Coverage: The outsole strategically covers high-wear areas, offering good durability without adding unnecessary weight. The forefoot offers decent flexibility, allowing for natural toe-off and a smooth transition. However, some runners might prefer a more flexible shoe for a truly barefoot-like feel.
Marathon Racing Verdict:
The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 shines as a versatile tempo trainer and racer for shorter distances. Its responsive midsole and secure upper make it a great choice for tempo runs, interval training, and even fast half-marathons. However, for seasoned marathoners seeking ultimate comfort and impact absorption over long distances, it might fall slightly short. If you prioritize responsiveness and snappiness for a fast marathon pace, the Speed 4 could be a contender, but consider trying it for shorter runs first to assess its comfort over longer distances.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your individual preferences and racing goals. If you're a runner who values a lively ride and prioritizes speed over plush comfort, the Endorphin Speed 4 deserves a spot on your marathon training roster. However, if maximum cushioning and long-distance comfort are paramount, you might want to explore other options built specifically for the unique demands of the marathon.

I loved the speed 2s but hated the speed 3s, I had my fingers crossed but not sure whether I’ll like these :(
Speed 1 is still the GOAT. I really hope Saucony brings back that style.
Agreed, lean and mean speed machine
Totally agree. I have a ViziPro with just over 100 miles in and just saving it for special runs.
Absolutely. Loved the speed 1.
i know! so unfortunate the other series didnt at least match the 1. Loved the speed 1 so much i brought 3 pairs
Me 2 still have a pair of speed 1!
If I can find them on internet I order directly.
What a treat! E Pro and E Speed reviews few hours apart! Thank you, Seth!
No. Thank you for bearing with me during these difficult times. Ever grateful 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Personally I think that the speed serie is going the wrong way. More weight, less speed. More and more a daily trainer.
It seems you're saying half an ounce when it's really a tenth of an ounce?
QD: I owed 1, 2 & 3. I still like the 1&2 more than the 3s. I feel like Saucony made it a bit safe. Not a bad shoe, but not the same as 1&2
Great review…. Head to head battle - Speed 4 vs. NB Fuelcell v4?!?
Please keep making videos..makes my day😊
Appreciate you!
I think your scoring on the price of this shoe is way off given your promotion of it for racing over other shoes that are at least $50.00 more.
Hello Seth because of you I got the speed 1 twice loved that shoe and went for the speed 3 once it came out!!!!!
Started saucony speed journey from 2, bought a few of them and loved them then came 3 and ugh, the foam was just not together can’t pin point it.
I bought one a of the 3s and use it seldom.
I am still using and searching for left over new 2’s I have now for the pro 2 and also awesome
Haven’t got the 4 bit worried the foam same as 3
I still run in my very first speed 2 with over 2000kms now and trust it on my 100milers how’s that for durability.
This shoe even changes my heel strike to a more mid foot striker
V3 was too mushy underfoot and I couldn’t land midfoot in it. I had no such prob w b1&2. Wonder if I’ll be able to run w midfoot landing in v3.
I've had the speed 1's and am currently using the 3's (LOVE these for daily training). The 1's are how I initially found this channel. Very thankful that they led me here, God bless Seth
I am seeing a lot of comments about the Speed 1. What made the Speed 1 such a great shoe? Also how much of a difference does that nylon plate make, and does it really feel like it propels you forward during your runs? I do have a few carbon running/race shoes. They give you a little extra on harder/longer runs for picking up the pace, though can be overly taxing on the lower legs as well. 😅
Love speed 1
Say "see-A-lo." It's Spanish, and it means sky or heaven. It's not "cello," which of course is a musical instrument. 😆
Keep calling it the Cello, Seth. We love it.
I can appreciate that perhaps you may be exposed to more Spanish but in Italian sky(sometimes heaven) is also translated to Cielo with the 'ch' sound, not to mention the Latin for sky which is 'Caelum' also a hard 'ch' sound and the language from which Spanish was originally derived. Not so straightforward!
Though the french is 'ciel' also a soft C sound.
@@peterkirktenorSure, but cielo and cello are not pronounced the same in Italian, either. 😆. Nice try.
The speed 1 is probably my favorite shoe of all time. i'm definitely an owner of all 4. Well, I'll get the speed 4 after this last pair of speed 3 hits a few more miles.
Hi Seth thanks for making my boring Saturday night in Australia, out of interest are you still clocking 50 miles or kilometres before you do the review? Thanks.
Owned all 3 but #3 kind of bottomed out in the forefoot for me and I lost propulsive magic if 1/2. And the 4s seem like the 3s for this one and novas.
I use the Speed 2 for my sessions (to save my carbon racers for race day) and they feel fast every time I put them on! There's just something about them. So racing in these 4's doesn't such a crazy idea!
I think you need a little tweaking in your ratings.. 6 score for the weight? This is a high stakes midsole training shoes!
gained weight is why, auto deduction from v3
Yet your score seems too low overall 🤔
Finally bought the speed 3 to see what all the hypes was about. On sale of course. I couldn't justify getting the Speed 4 unless all the reviews were at least a 8.5/10 and they haven't been. For now Puma Deviate Nitro 2 and the Superblast are my favorites and they both have plenty of miles left in them.
I raced a lot in Speed 2. Pro 2 was way too narrow. I cannot run with sufficient speed to activate carbon plates. But the nylon plate helps me with picking up the pace. Also helps with keeping a tempo pace with less effort.
Speed 1 is still my favourite but had them all and will definitely be picking up the 4s!
I’m with you!
Loved the 1 and 2, hated the 3. I felt like my Achilles was literally going to snap running in them - I sold them on ebay. I'm getting a pair of 4 from REI for $135 - they discounted their colorway, so I'm hoping I'll like them as much as the 2's. I did try a pair of the 4's on in a store when they firt came out and initial impression was tposititve. I'm crossing my fingers they feel as good as the 1st 2 Speed versions.
That is a solid idea. Lots of races this year, may be the choice to treat my feet and my wallet with some love.
Speed 1 is definitely my favorite shoe of all time! Might pick up the Speed 4 this year
Just ordered the speed 4. I loved the speed 1, have 2 pairs of speed 2 im still using, have 1 pair of speed 3 that have low mileage on them still
I would have a question to an alternative to my Speed2, with speed 1 and 2 i was used to have 2 pairs a season that i got 800km in each. last year i bought another remaining stock speed2 and a speed3. speed 3 is not my thing.... then i got injured had to stop the seasonplans. This year fully back, loving my remaining speed2 but absolutely don´t like the speed3 still.
Is there an alternative to speed2 ? Don´t like the 3 for the same reasons @seth James Demoor exlplained in his 2 vs 3 comparison. As 4 goes even more in the direction that 3 did, curious what alternatives i could try?
Hi
Can I find out actual foot length and foot width?
Please let me know, I think it will be of great help in purchasing the product.
Im waiting to see the Score of the Boston 12 is much better than 10,11 an siper resonsive and durable! My pair have 700 plus kms, i have bad experience with Saucony the durability is the worst of the maeket and the grip is bad to! I think tha 7.3 is a high score for a shoe more expensive and heavier and im sure the durability is not good.
I own both the Speed 2 and 3. 2 is one of my all-time favorite shoes. It's bouncy and snappy without being aggressive. But I didn't feel the same excitement to 3. So I'm now considering trying Pro 3.
Actually Saucony is still not very popular in Japan. The reason is that their distribution channels are very limited, meaning they are not readily available in major chain stores that sell other popular brands like Nike, Adidas, Hoka, etc. As a result, many runners are not familiar with the brand yet.
Hello. What difference can you tell between the 2 d 3s ?
Hi! I feel that bounciness and snappiness are still there with 3, but not much as 2. 3 is more stable instead.
In my opinion 30/100 miles is not enough to determine the durability of a shoe, at least 140/200 miles is more acurate to predict durability .
I’ve had all 3 but won’t be buying the 4. 3 was a disappointment. Recently bought a v2 on eBay and they are a pure delight. There are reviewed who have done A/B testing 2 v 4 and the 2 is much faster lighter and more nimble.
Have had all 3. I didn’t love the speed 3. Which is a bummer because 1 and 2 were life changing. Had lots of hotspots and blisters from the 3. I don’t think i will try the 4 if it is like the 3.
Miss my speed 1’s so much. I’m on the 3’s now and they are “ok” but if you owned the 1 you will hate the 3 every time u run in it lol. Feels so slow in comparison. (If I never owned or felt the 1 on foot I would probably like the 3 lol)
Me I have still a speed 1 The speed 2 ar in shoe heaven 💨 And the 3 getting today the last run. My 4 are coming tomorrow!!❤
Yes big fan of the endorphins speed 😅
my speed collection ,all 4 of them very good ! Maybe a Wide version would be even better.
Have about 700kms in the 2's and they're getting beat up! Stuck between picking up the 3's on sale or spending a bit more to get the 4's
Are any part polish by any chance? (Asking cause a polish national shirt)a fan from Poland here!
LOVE the speed series (and the pro) but I remember that same feeling putting on the series one. My mind was blown lol Thanks for the review
I skipped the 3 but i am buying the 4 tomorrow! All my PBs at every distance are in the v2s.
I have Speed 1 and considering the Speed 4, does anyone know if the 4 is more narrow then the 1?
Just ordered the 3s on sale and should be here soon! My first pair with any plate! Hoping they can be my marathon shoes for an old runner!
But the exceptuin is saucony y had manu saucony shoes that in one or two runs the outsoles get ruined!
We need a Rebel v4 comparison, please!
The one was alittle to narrow, the two got better overall and the 3 became one of my all time favorite shoes. Now just waiting for the 4!
Would you say that the it is significantly wider in the 3's? I have the two's and enjoy them a lot as far as ride, but they are too snug in across for sure. I am looking at the 3's (for when they go on clearance) but didn't know if maybe I should just go for the wide version? My feet are a bit wide, but not enough that I would normally need a wide.
@@katrinaalison2511 They are definitely wider than the 1 and 2's. You can feel the difference once you put your foot in them. They also slightly stretch abit after awhile so if they do fit snug at first (didnt have this issue) they will feel good after a few runs in them. They have more a daily trainer fit than a snugger speed shoe fit.
I loved my speed 2 and raced in it a lot. Looks like a very good option.
I actually did my first half marathon in 2023 in the Speed 3 (on purpose) and it was a great choice. Got my PB and legs felt "normal" afterwards.
BOOM
How is the size for the new SPEED 4 vs SPEED 3?
I wish saucony would at least make the new speed series comparible to speed 1. I didnt enjoy the speed 2's.
Just brought the speed 3's on discount so hopefully theyll be better
I loved the speed 1's so much i brought 3 pairs of them! (which is something i have never done better)
put 500+ miles in each pair
The only shoe i need to buy every iteration since my love of original.
Speed 2 my favorite shoe ever, 3 good but not like 2. Could run in speeds for all runs.
Was expecting more than 7.3 score. That was a poor review, all you basically told us was you would race in it !
QOD: Speed 1, Speed 2 and Speed 3- which is my favorite so far. Also some Pro's. With the ES3's on sale right now.... Probably just gonna' pick up another pair for my fun, uptempo runs. Still gonna race in the VaporFly's tho. I use my Pro 1-2's for track day. Never did buy the Pro3's.
Saucony speed 3 and pro 3 toe boxes are quite narrow. Boston 12 doesn't have this problem. I stick with Boston 12 and adidas ADP3.
How does it compare to the Speed 3s ? 25% off on the Saucony website so I'm wondering as my Speed 1 an 2s both are at 800+k, so might be time for a change
I loved the 1 and 2. I ordered the 3 and the didn’t feel right in the foot bed, uncomfortable. I was heartbroken. I ended up with my first pair ofTriumphs instead. I will definitely try the 4s once my Brooks Hyperion Max reach their mileage limit.
QOD: I’ve owned all three iterations. Still have my second pair of speed 1 in rotation, speed 2 still in rotation and speed 3 being my favorite iteration so far. Loved 3 so much that purchased two more pairs during Black Friday. I will eventually buy the 4’s even though I felt like the 3 almost perfect in my opinion.
Speed 3 was my first marathon shoe! But! Speed 2 is still my favorite. I’m excited to try the Speed and Pro 4’s…. Good stuff, Seth!
QD: Seth, your speed 1 review brought me to your channel. First speed I bought was the 2 and ran my first official marathon in it. Bought a second pair later. Both ES2’s have 900km and I’m still using them for shorter tempo sessions and easy long runs. Now using the speed 3 and raced a half marathon in it. Also very good shoe, but preferred the 2’s. Looking forward to the 4’s! The speed line-up is the most versatile of them all! Easy day, daily trainer, tempo days, interval and racing. I need to hide them because otherwise I would do every training in the speeds 😂 🎉
I have owned Speed 1 and two pairs of Speed 3. Love them, out on 600 miles on each of the Speed 3. Cant wait for 4? Great review as always. BTW - I think I bought my last pair of speed 3 for $170.
👋 Almost only run in the Speeds! They alone made me fall in love with running 🏃♂️ Ran through 2 pairs of 1's, 3 pairs of 2's and soon on my second pair of 3's. Either Saucony have to slow down their development or I've got to get my mileage up 😅
I’ve had all three. Speed 1s for speed days. Speed 3s for threshold work. Will probably buy a second pair of 3s at a discount; favorite shoe of my rotation.
Come on Seth, the price increases by 10%. We don't like that, but giving it a 5 point for price seems harsh. I mean, compare to other shoess in the same category..
I use the Speed 1 and Speed 3. Love them. Such great all round shoes and honestly in my onion about just as fast as the Pro’s (Endorphin Pro+ in my case).
I recommend them to runners wanting to up the game.
They’re also very durable. My Speed 1’s have 1119 km on them and are still very responsive. The only thing is that the outsole is wearing out, so it’s about time to retire them.
Finally, with Saucony, if you’re patient you can pick them up at a 40% discount which I always do and gives these shoes the best price to quality ratio.
Great review. Excited for the speed 4. However, I would have a hard time wanting to race a marathon in a sub 40mm shoe stack when there are so many options. Maybe this would be a great half marathon option ? definitely interested in trying it out as my half marathon shoe. right now my race shoe is the adios pro 3.
Only 1 pair of Speed 1s but have had 3 pairs of Speed 2s now. Will get the 3 once they go on deeper clearance. Whatever goes on with my stride in only this shoe I've had to glue the sock liner/insole in place to keep it from sliding to my heel. Small price to pay though.
Thanks for the review. Put the stability in the speed 3 and kept it in the 4. Really like the original and the two. Can’t see myself buying them again. Just a heavier version that fights with your stride
Loved the original Speed - a real game changer! I didn't get the Speed 2, but did pick up the 3s and what a disappointment! The fit was so wide for me that I had to return them, and I've never had that problem with any other shoe, inluding the Pro 3s. I really hope the fit of the 4s is a bit more similar to the originals.
Yep had all 3 loved them all and the 4 ?? No brainer 👍👏
QD: I still have the OG in my closet! Not using it much these days in winter but yeah, this was a great shoe and ran my second marathon with those back in 2020.
My favorite go to all around shoe, best bang for your buck! Ive owned Speed 1,2 and now the 3 which is my favorite so far in the series!
I’ve owned at least one pair of each iteration of speeds and pros. I am a fan of value and I think that saucony has consistently delivered. I’m probably 20 pairs in at this point and have either liked or loved every iteration, especially the 3s which were a pretty major change. Looks like they went for minor improvements as opposed to a revamp this time and I think that’s just fine. Thanks for the great review Seth
Speed 2 is the one I have with +850km and still has some life left. I was thinking to get the 3s on sale or maybe later get 4s. Seems a pretty good update and snappy
Brooks Hyperion max 2 or saucony endorphin speed 4. I won't be able to decide which one to take😊
Would you get the Speed 4 or the Speed 3 on sale? Also can you tell me the brand of pants you’re wearing in the video? Thx
That price is a bit much. I think the rebel v4 and Cielo road are the top contenders for race shoes, I stick to 5k up to 21k.
Sad what has happened to this shoe line. 2s were the most perfect shoe. Don’t make sense to me
1s still my fav
Love the reviews Seth. Been coming to your channel for a while. Also love the Polska sweater 🇵🇱
I own the speed 2,great shoe, you should do a comparison between the Speed 4 and Mach 6
Speed 3 was a great shoe for me. I'm thinking of the Speed 4, but do you think it's better than the 3
i have all 3 versions. At present i use the 3 for daily things but lace up the 1 or 2 when i want to do sprints and extra fast intervals. I have always found the 3 to be a bit mushy for that type of work.
Why would you bother if you can get the speed 3 for half that price ? Heavier and more expensive is not good im gonna be rebuyimg all of my last years shoes this year since every shoe is heavier this year
Love the Endorphin line up had the first Shift, Speed 2 in Visipro and in runshield for Winter absolutely loved them
I still have my speed 1 mutants… and have the speed 2 runshield… love both… tempted for these but would love to see the speed 4 runshield first.
Still plenty of life in my Speed 2's which are in rotation with the Ride & Pro so not looking into replacing them anytime soon.
Love the video - I loved the Speed 3 and found that it was the best for me to run the marathon distance. Enough pop to help but not enough to cause foot pain. Looking forward to the sleek looking Speed 4!
amazing, with all the competition in the market, shoe manufactures still find reasons to raise price.
I loved my speed 1
Polska🇵🇱
Love the review! Just ordered the 20% off Speed 3s to replace my well loved Speed 2s.
I got PB in Half and full to speed 2
A bit unstable to slower pace but once you hit the sweet spot man it can go all day
Speed 1 and 2 were great, but the 3 was just ok. Is the ride similar to the 3?
Peace with You, from Poland, cheers :)
Love the Speed 3 and Pro 3, hope they fixed the grip, was terrible in the wet.
Yeah, as many mentioned - it hasn't been $160 since the Endo Speed 2s
Song?
Winged nylon plate was in the last version and it was $170 last time as well. I hate when reviewers take it less serious than the viewers.
I love the Speed lineup! I have owned 1 and 2 and absolutely loved them. Definitely on my radar to get either a discounted 3 or the new 4!
I hope they stiffened the plate up like the speed 2. On the 3 the plate wasn't as stiff and didn't seem to have as good response as the 2.
Greetings from Polska! ❤
