From what i can gather the protagonist of the game is an overworked single father who often has to leave his daughter home alone, sadly one evening she slipped in the bathroom banding her head. While feeling unwell she rang her father's work telling him that she was feeling unwell but her father told her he couldn't come home yet but would do so soon. However, by the time he did get home, she had unfortunately died from the injury. Weighed down by guilt he discovered a girl in the park who looked like her daughter and fixated on her. He used the mouse mask and costume to attract this girl's attention and kidnapped her as perhaps the character is popular on a children's TV show. In the end, his attempts to replace his daughter ended in tragedy where he killed her because she refused to play the role of the new daughter he disposed of her body by cutting it up with a chainsaw and disposed of the body parts by squeezing the parts into small spaces, hence why we only see parts of her in the photos or of her crammed into small places. The house is full of bags, blood, and bugs because the body parts are still in the apartment. On using the camera he experiences the terror the murdered girl felt when being chased by a man in a mouse mask. The lady in the mouse mask is the vengeful spirit of the murdered girl who was denied the opportunity to grow into a woman, hence why she is depicted in his mind as an adult corpse. In the end, he admits his guilt and rings the police himself, giving himself up as he knows it's the only way the hauntings will stop.

I agree. At first I thought he'd kidnapped a girl and renamed her Mitsuka, and forced her to dress and act like his daughter, and that it went on for years until he killed her too. But her being a vengeful spirit makes more sense.

i think the father blames himself for his daughter (mitsuke)'s death, its neglect because he left her home alone. she probably fell in the bathroom and hit her head but didnt know how to handle that situation. father had a psychotic break, probably started stalking the park and fixating on the other girl, ultimately kidnapping her. i think the starting section is actually his warped reality trying to rationalize everything, playing everything back as him just trying to reach out to his daughter (when in reality its him closing in on the other girl). a part of him must have known the truth because he tried to input the same picture he knew for sure was his daughter's in the site when everything goes to hell. personally i think he imprisoned the other girl for quite some time (from the state of the apartment) before she died, which would explain her older appearance, at which point he tried to reach out again. this time mitsuke really did respond, but she also chose to sell her dad out to resolve the other girl's grudge/because its justice

I took the story as his daughter died while he was at work and he couldn't handle or accept her being dead. I think he dressed up as his daughter's favorite toy and tried to take Manami to possibly replace Mitsuka but he terrified her so much that she ran away from him. Not sure if he straight up killed her or if maybe she tried climbing the "mountain" and got stuck and ended up breaking her neck on those bars

You play Mitsuka's father. Mitsuka is quite obsessed with the rat masked character you see in her photos and in her room. At the beginning there is a conversation between two girls who are racing towards the swing. One of the little girls is Mitsuka, and the other is Manami Koudan. It is possible that Mitsuka and Manami are twins who were separated at birth, because they are very similar. I suspect, and I feel pretty sure, that the man in the rat mask is their real father, and the woman in the rat mask is their mother. For one reason, they both didn't like the two girls and killed them, as the video message shows Manami running to the park toilet. There's no information who adopted Manami. The two couples then tried to kill Mitsuka too by drowning her in the bathtub while his adoptive father (the main char) away but they failed and Mitsuka, who knew his twin sister was dead by tehir father then called the police before breathing her last breath and being found by his adoptive father. That's what I can expect from this game.

The poster with the mascot character sign reads "Don't throw trash/garbage away" as direct translation but more understandable as "Don't litter". The bottom part of the sign says "If you do litter, you will be punished by the law".
These kind of signs are very common in Japan, especially in parks.
But I don't think it was coincidence they used the trash/garbage theme, as in the dad's apartment there are trash bags everywhere and specifically say "Home use garbage bags". In Japanese "Gomi" or garbage/trash can be used in the same way it does in English as in "You are a piece of garbage" or "You are (a) trash (person)".
This would be a descriptor of the dad since he 1st neglected his daughter and she died as a result of him being so busy and never at home. Then it would also be fitting to how after his daughter's death he kidnaps another girl as an attempt to replace his lost daughter and also ends up killing that girl.

  • @Netreek
    @Netreek 4 дня назад +31

As far I did understand is that the daughter did die. He wasn't able to cope with the loss, so he did kidnap another girl, which later did result to murder her. So while he thought that he was making picture of his daughter at the playground, it was actually the spirit of the girl he did murder. For the kidnapping he used to make the costume of his daughters favorite doll. However he seems to have forgotten his sin. That why he did act surprised at the pictures on the wall, which were in fact model pictures to make the costume. Thanks to the cursed camera the daughters spirit got enough power to bring her father to justice, which also made her feel heartbroken. Even though she was allready dead. Please tell me if you agree at my theory or where I might be mistaken.

Fun, if a bit confusing, game! I think several other commenters are right. Mitsuka's single dad is a salary man--always working and away from home. Mitsuka dies alone at home from an aneurysm, or some such. Out of his mind with grief and guilt, her dad dons a mouse mask (still wearing his grey suit) to emulate Mitsuka's beloved mouse doll and then kidnaps Manami to "replace" Mitsuka. At some point he freaks out and kills Manami. Then, either Mitsuka's actual spirit or the dad's guilty conscience leads to a call to the police.
What's confusing to me is the woman dressed as a mouse, and the other "adult" woman spirit he sees. Who are they?

    • @railmacher1303
      @railmacher1303 4 дня назад +9

There is one ending stinger shown after the credits rolled that the developer omitted from the game version before v1.00 (more likely due to the depiction of suicide shown), which shows there may be more to the supernatural and raises questions to who "Mikey" (the mouse man the Japanese streamers nicknamed as) really is. At first, Mikey could be seen as the dark alter-ego of the protagonist father. Regarding the stinger, The shot shows the cursed digicam on the ground shattered, but still recording and facing the apartment complex where the father lives. The protagonist commits suicide by jumping off the building with an audible sound on the ground. Shortly, Mitsuka (or really her spirit) in her pajamas form jumps off the building, but without a sound heard on the ground. Then the arm of Mikey is shown grabbing the camera and the game ends there. So is Mikey really the dad's dark half, or a separate entity at work?

@@railmacher1303 Wow, _very_ interesting! Thank you for filling us all in! It does raise another question for me, though. If the dad (as "Mikey") didn't kill Manami, then why did Mitsuka's spirit call the police and say he did? Just out of anger/spite?

I definitely want to see more cameras in horror games. Fatal Frame style horror.
As to the story, I think most folks have figured out 90% of it. The only wrinkle is the older woman, but I think I have a thoery on that: she is his wife/Mitsuka's mom. Being his daughter, Mitsuka had to have a mom, but we clearly see he lives alone (poorly, I might add). Where is the mom? I think she died prior to Mitsuka, maybe even in childbirth, which explains why there is a room for Mitsuka, but not one for the parents. Maybe she died while he was working, and afterwards, swore to take good care of his daughter, only for her to die under similar circumstances. The older woman is his manifestation of what he thinks she would perceive him as: an irresponsible father.
That's why she shows up around the house, wearing the mask, and attacking him - it's her "ghost" getting revenge for not living up to his promise to protect Mitsuka.

So many haunted camera games but never Fatal Frame! I'm a smidge bitter. But yeah, its a common motif in these kinds of stories that when you use supernatural means to poke into the other side, you often make yourself vulnerable to other spirits than you intend. Using that camera to look for his daughter made him vulnerable to the ghost of the girl he killed and seemed to be in denial about. And the mouse headed thing is likely a ghost created by the daughter or the girl to act out against him what the did to them

I defiantly appreciated that this game really didn't do any jump scares. Sure there was some scenes that can count as a jump scare, but they didn't took control away from the player and play a loud sound in your face. It was just the simple characters standing out of sight for a bit and you just notice them when you turn your head, which from Chris reactions show they are just as effected and honestly are better then 95% of jump scares.

    • @random_stuff9547

17:35 this is definitely a jumpscare. It's called silent jumpscare. You use something to distract the player (ball) and them throw whatever at the screen (the weird Clown). Its effective because it happens to close to the player while the player is distracted. Problably a loud noise would make even more "jumpier" but in this case theres was no need.

So after my 1st comment, I went to watch some Japanese channels that maybe could explain the story, and the theories of what exactly is happening are all over the fucking place. So even they don't have a consensus. It seems like this is one of those cases where only the creators/devs can really explain the story.
All the theories had some parts that make sense, but then had 1 or 2 other parts of interpretation would not make any sense at all if the rest of the theory was true or could easily be explained away. As an example, one person suggested there are 2 MCs. Part 1 as the mother and Part 2 as the father. This being based off of how when the park part starts the MC is in the girls toilet. However, according to the video showing the MC chasing Manami into that exact stall in the girls bathroom that explains why the MC starts there even if male/the dad character.
As far as the "older girl" character goes, she is Manami based on wearing the exact same school uniform as the younger self and on the picture taken behind the fridge where she is originally the 8 yr old age but after taking a picture she becomes older. The theory video I watched suggested that Chilla's Arts games have a running "how the world works" theme that this "living" world and the "other" world (afterlife/ghost lingering world) run on different time scales. The problem with even this theory is that if Manami can age so fast, why didn't Mitsuka also be effected in the same way?
So, basically, no ones seems to have an explanation that fully covers all points of the whole story in a way that makes sense. Again, perhaps only Chilla's Arts can explain the story that is if they are willing to.

    • @NotCreativeEnough3
      @NotCreativeEnough3 2 дня назад +2

Thanks so much for sharing that!! For me, the lady in the apartment is still the most puzzling thing in the game, so it's nice to see 2 whole theories on who she is.
I think the first theory here is messed up by the fact that in the very beginning the MC is opening this magical website while looking at Manami's missing-person poster. So they seem quite aware that it's Manami's spirit the are trying to liberate, while we, as a player, don't know that at that point. I don't think a mom would mistake her child for another like that (a dad could though :D JK). So I though it's the father who is acting in the first part of the game, driven by his guilt

Really enjoyed this game, but the game leaves you to find out what truly happened to Mitsuka and what her father did. It's implied that Mitsuka died due to suffering from a head injury the protagonist was unaware about. If you noticed from the various tidbits of photos taken and Mitsuka's voiceovers, she may have slipped and fell due to an accident at the playground causing her head injury. The reason why she called up her dad telling him about getting intense headaches may be she had a cerebral haemorrhage and died from the internal bleeding. By the time the protagonist returned from work, it's already too late (he returned home at night while she collapsed during the day). There is some implication that Manami was kidnapped because the protagonist takes her as a replacement daughter after Mitsuka died. There is another 2nd theory: Mitsuka and Manami are friends and were playing together with Mitsuka getting injured while Manami was there. The protagonist blames Manami for causing his daughter's death and kidnapped her both as a replacement daughter and as a form of "revenge". The reason I say this is there is another presence shown with Manami's ghost while the photos were taken (example is the toilet cubicle photo had Manami peeking out with another pair of hands that does not belong to her).
The short of it...... The single father ignored his daughter's call (Misuka) telling him she hurt her head.
He got home to find she passed away from blunt force trauma.
Guilt from not listening to her, he found a little girl that resembles his late daughter, in the park/phone booth area.
The girl in the final scene is actually the girl he kidnapped..... he had told her he was her "father", even though she already had a "dad" (she tells police that her "father" killed her "dad").
He most likely had a mental break & told this random girl that HE was her "real" father.
He was the one wearing the fluffy Purge mask..... I'm guessing it was a character that his late daughter loved, because of the drawings in her room.

Well now, that was an outstanding experience! All the scares were so amazingly 'gentle' and uncanny. Just meeting the girl's stare when she's peeking out from... wherever a human body could not physically be, opened a new level of uneasiness for me.
Kinda fun to have so many unanswered questions by the end of the game. It's cool that it gives us just enough info to get the main plotline, but not enough to figure out the whole picture in detail, leaving a lot to imagination.
Here are my takes on some of the events of the game.
-- I think the dad might not be just 'overworked', but judging from the state of the apartment, and from Mitsuka's hint saying that she hates the roaches coming from behind the fridge (meaning that she saw this mess herself), he probably had other problems, such as alcohol addiction (plenty of cans and bottles at home, beer cans dropping from the vending machine at the playground). I could imagine him being elswhere, not just at work, when Mitsuka called him to tell about the headache.
-- The dad might also have been slightly abusive - I got a bad vibe from Mitsuka's line about the "flushing the toilet too often". I guess she wouldn't hear the end of it at home.
-- I guess Mitsuka and Manami were friends and played together at the playground. They were probably together when Mitsuka got injured. I got that idea from the very first video, where she seems to be talking to someone, sounds like they went to the slide together and Mitsuka tried to prove that she's good with heights (and we later learn she's not, from one of the hints). Also, "swings are fun when someone's pushing you" said Mitsuka, and then we see Manami's ghost pushing the swings.
-- Also, why was that camera just sitting there in the park in the first place? Could it be that dad was filming someone else at that point as well?.. (hell of a worrying thought) Then maybe left to grab a beer and left the camera on a bench, leaving Mitsuka unsupervised for a brief minute?
-- I assume that dad's job was that of a mascot and he just kept watch of the park. Maybe that's why Mitsuka had that doll too -- it could be a present from her dad's company.
-- The woman in the appartment: as she's appearing in the camera, she's most likely dead too. She's also wearing the mascot-like clothes and the same mask. Was she dad's 'colleague', a fellow animator in a mascot costume? Was she his accomplice? Or did she see dad behaving strangely and suspected him of something, and that's why he killed her? Stuffed her behind the fridge?
There's no solid clue to any of this in the game, I'm just making things up (also it's midnight when I'm writing this, so pardon the rambling)
-- Also I think some joint trickery by the two girls' restless spirits is involved, so that in the end Mitsuka's ghost could manifest and call the police, bringing justice upon her dad. The fact that only Mitsuka's photos (or rather, just photo) are uploaded to the website is weird, considering that we've been taking Manami's photos that whole time in the apartment.
Apparently, I'm WAY into games that leave a lot to imagination. I think this is the best piece from Chilla's art so far

I read all the other comments concerning the story and the "daughter dies so he abducts another kid and kills her" theory is sound. Though I'd like to add something: The imagery of the grown woman in a school outfit and the kid sized mask in Mizuki's bedroom hint towards what the dad did with the girl he abducted. So either it's a hint at the timeframe - he kept her a very, very long time (the amount of trash would take time to accumulate as well) or he "saw her as an adult" (forcing her to wear mask herself - literally or methaphorically - in which case... dear god).

I think a lot of the comments are right. It must be something about his daughter died leading him to a psycotic break down, kidnapping and then killing another girl. The rat man is definitely him, because his daughter loved that doll.
Remember the 15 photos at the beginning could be uploaded, but the later (photos of his daugther) could not. I think his daughter died a long time ago, while the other girl just died recently.
So, I think the rat woman is his daughter?
One thing I do questioning is the number? I wonder if some of the number hold any (secret) meaning?
    1996? 2024?

It looks like it's already been commented a few times, but all evidence does seem to point towards the father coming home too late to save his daughter, then kidnapping another which ... well, it didn't work out so well for her.
One thing that seemed interesting was how the ghost progressed the story. In the park, the girl was happy and - albeit some sections were a bit "choppy" - she seemed fine. In the house, her body was often contorted, crushed or unnatural.
The clues were there, but the game doesn't make it easy whilst playing, as the gamer gets caught up in the frights.

Love this! I don't know what the story is but my interpretation is Mitsuka did die from whatever it is head hurts because he was never home or something hence the phone calls... Then he felt so guilty and had a psychotic break? And tried to kidnap another girl - Manami to replace his daughter maybe and ended up killing her?? He was full of guilt that it manifested into his dead daughter calling the police (in reality he called the police bc of guilt?) and the woman/man in suit is just a manifestation of guilt because that's what his daughter always carried around? That's just my thoughts someone else have a better explanation do share! Loved this one

There are some theories to what is going on.
      - The mascot "Mikey" (who looks like a certain famous mouse man) is actually the protagonist who disguised himself in that costume to lure and kidnap Manami. The protagonist used this mascot as it is seen with Mitsuka as a doll and it seems popular with children. "Mikey" comes back as a separate entity, or a manifestation of the protagonist guilt, to haunt the protagonist.
      - The reason why the protagonist kidnapped Manami. The most common explanation is the protagonist went insane after his daughter's death and made Manami a replacement daughter. Another 2nd theory is, Manami and Mitsuka were friends and played at the playground together, and Manami was present when Mitsuka got her fatal head injury in an accident while playing. The protagonist kidnapped Manami both as a replacement and to also take revenge/punish her even though it wasn't her fault.
      - The woman in the "high school dress"/suit is either Mitsuka/Manami as a young woman, that represents the future they could have had if they had not died. Another theory is the woman is actually the protagonist's unseen wife, who died before the game started. This woman is first seen when the protagonist is downstairs taking pictures in the first half of the game (looking up back at his apartment, the woman is seen watching from the window, the player can take a picture of her).
      - Mitsuka/Manami is seen without the videocam at the end calling the police. Either Mitsuka possessed Manami's dead body, or Mitsuka and Manami's ghosts merged together to make a call to the police themselves. It's either an action to stop the father from committing further evil or the protagonist hallucinating and calling the police himself out of guilt.
The part below onwards is from the versions before v1.00, which may not be canon due to depiction of suicide.
      - The after-credits ending stinger before v1.00 shows the protagonist committing suicide by jumping off the building, seen through the videocam's lens. Mitsuka is also seen jumping off, but no sound is heard from the ground (she's already a ghost before this point). One theory is Mitsuka's ghost is symbolically killing herself to join her father in death, as she believes her father became a monster because of her death.
      - The ending stinger also shows Mikey grabbing the protagonist's shattered videocam (his arm is seen). Which puts into doubt how much Mikey is actually the protagonist's split personality or an entity now separate or was never part of the protagonist.

Like you, I enjoyed it, but I am so confused... During the park section of the game, I thought that the main character's daughter was supposed to have died in an accident at the park (as hinted in the first few seconds of the game), and that while the mc was trying to get rid of her ghost, he was figuring out that his daughter was actually killed by the guy in the costume. I remember thinking "hey, that's refreshing, at least the dad didn't do it this time". Of course, my theory flew out the window by the end : it definitely seems that the dad did... something.

      @Scriptor13 4 дня назад +6

@fredd3233 That's what I thought at first, Fred. By the end, though, here's what I was thinking: The dad's belief that his daughter died in the park was a delusion brought on by grief and guilt. Mitsuka, his daughter, actually died alone at home. It was Manami (the missing girl) who the dad stalked in the park wearing the mouse costume. He either killed her in the park or kidnapped her as a replacement for Mitsuka and eventually killed her. This is all conjecture, of course, 'cause it certainly wasn't made clear in the game.😂

Let me break down th story! Daughter always played by herself in the park cause her father was busy, daughter had a mouse plushie toy that turned into her imaginary friend. At the beginning she was playing with the mouse when she fell and hit her head so she went home and called her father saying her head hurt but then collapsed and died, father comes home to find his daughter dead and after time passed and many days and drinks later he decided to dress as the imaginery friend to go to the park and kidknapp another girl who reminds him of his daughter. Father becomes angry that this girl is wearing his daughters clothes and is in his daughters bedroom so he decides to kill her in the bath because she can never replace his daughter.
Anyway daughter haunts him until he confessed at the end to the police that he killed that gilr and at the end he jumps off the building followed by his daughters ghost who now can be released. The camera he used to release his daughters ghost but instead it was reminding him of his crime.

I feel like this is one of those ones where a lot of it is deliberately ambiguous and open to interpretation. What we know for certain, I'm pretty sure, is that the protagonist was a father, his daughter died, and he ended up killing another girl as a result. But the reasons behind it, and how much of what we see is real versus hallucination, I think is pointedly never explained.
It could be that the whole thing is in his head, and the ritual is actually his brain interpreting him stalking the girl he kills, and then the "attack" in the apartment is something like his subconscious manifesting his guilt, and at the end his brain interprets his daughter calling the police but in reality he's the one making the call and confessing.
It could be that he pursues the other girl, somehow his head jumbling stuff up so he sees her as his daughter/a replacement/a way to get his daughter back, and in his state of grief either can't think or can't motivate himself to stopping. But then after the fact gets a little more aware, realizes he's done something horrible and tries to atone through a ritual to guide his victim to a more peaceful afterlife, which culminates in the call to the police, either partially hallucinated or by his daughter haunting him.
Or, it could be that in grief-driven desperation he turns to the occult, the reason he killed in the first place is thinking it was a key step in bringing his daughter back (a ritual attempted or started before the actual start of the game), only to realize how monstrous a thing he was doing part way through, and tried to undo it or atone with the ritual to guide his victim to the afterlife, only by that point he'd opened the door too wide, his killer persona manifested as a separate being, and I think his daughter had just enough influence on the world through it all to put a stop to the monster her father had become.

While I agree that the trope is overplayed, this game really isn't going for that angle. In Japan, there is a view that providing for your family financially is the biggest proof of your love so this game is holding up a mirror to that deeply held belief. It seems that the father was devoted to his daughter but expressed that by working longer and longer hours at work. This is obviously an issue unto itself, but the idea is that he in fact had failed to care for his daughter. She died while he was at work because of his neglect and then the other tragic events of the game played out. I know it doesn't seem like much, but Japan has really been undergoing some radical changes in its views of parenting soecifically and what constitutes as abuse. Even 10 years ago, it feels like a lot of things that are now clearly defined as abuse were much more socially acceptable.

@@anniemcguire2359 If I had to guess, I would assume the mother is dead. It is not very common forJapanese men to ask or get custody of their children, and in the event of a divorce, any children almost always go to the mother. The father will usually remarry and that first family basically gets wiped out in favour of the new one. That said, change has come very slowly so it is *is* possible the mother ran off rather than died or that by some miracle there was a divorce in which the dad sought and received custody. Funnily enough, this would be easier if the mother were non-Japanese as Japanese courts heavily favour Japanese citizens even in cases of de facto abduction such as when a Japanese citizen decides to bring their child back to Japan surreptitiously or against the will of the other parent.
As for the rest, I saw a comment that basically felt like the closest to me. The idea is the father kidnapped another girl who looked like his daughter who died. I'm unsure as to who actually died at the playground though as logically I would think his daughter maybe suffered a life-threatening injury there but maybe died at home. The other girl most likely died in the apartment since I find it highly unlikely a kidnapped child would be allowed to venture outside. That child though is most certainly the older looking ghost girl wearing a HS uniform and the mouse head. There is apparently a true ending so until I see that I can't know for sure. Unfortunately, one final cutscene was left off by accident in this video although without that true ending, who knows how relevant that would be.

I think the story is, the daughter died, from a brain aneurysm or subdermal hematoma or something, while the dad was away. The dad felt so guilty about being neglectful and not coming home earlier that he couldn't accept his daughter's death, and so kidnapped a girl from the local park to replace her before finally killing her - that's why the girl's ghost is haunting you, and why you keep referring to her as your daughter. You keep hearing about a missing child at the park, and the dad keeps insisting that his daughter died at the park because he can't accept responsibility for either girl's death.
The dog-man seems to be a local mascot, maybe for a neighbourhood watch given all the posters around the park, and so has come to punish you for your misdeeds - it's possible that the kidnapped girl was reminded of the mascot from the daughter's picture, which connected the two girls together, and was imagining the mascot saving/avenging her while she was trapped in the apartment, and she's the one who was obsessively doodling him on the walls, hoping for rescue. The woman could be the girl's mother, also searching for her.
In the end, your stubbornness in refusing to accept responsibility for both girls' deaths forces you daughter to step in and call the cops on you.
