      yeah it’s growing more and more difficult for people to have the resources to start families. the greed of others is what makes it this way though. unfortunately, we aren’t giving opportunities for new life. it’s really sad that people don’t think they are prepared enough in resources to bring life into this world.

      Women are choosing to have careers over a family, which pushes having children and also settling down.

    Dude is spending an extra $1500 a month on hagwons/academies for elementary age and that’s the low end.... I think outsiders don’t understand just how expensive it is and so people are opting out of parenthood, and not for some frivolous reasons. The path to success (middle class) is narrow in Korea and sending kids to academies is just the first step. Even college, they still go for the English toeic test, certificates for resumes, etc. Plus people can’t afford a house, to care for themselves, retirement, emergency money, etc.

    I think the difference in the advice given by people who currently have small children and the lady who doesn’t have small children shows that there is a disconnect between the generations and their experiences. This may also contribute to the lack of government support that people were talking about because the politicians who could make those changes tend to be from the older generation. Thank you for the great interview 😊

    I would be interested in seeing more of this topic, from again, both older and younger people. Part 2? When they say "house" they don't mean a stand alone house, they usually mean an apartment, don't they? From what I understand many 20-30 yr olds cannot even afford a small apartment on their own. It's getting like that all over the world.

    I live in America. We also have been seeing a decline in birth rates. I think a lot a lot of it has to do with the wages staying the same, but the cost of everything going up. It also doesn't help with the lack of support from the government. I am in my 40s. 20 years ago, my brother worked while his wife was able to stay home with the kids before their kids went to school. Most parents can't do that now. Because the cost of living is just too high.

    Korea needs to do what China did and get rid of all private academies. The teachers in school should be teaching not just having kids do workbooks with memorization. In the U.S. kids just go to school and after have free time to hang out with friends and family, volunteer for a charity work or work part time , this way they learn about the real world while still in high school. We have several Ivy League schools plus some of our kids go to other Ivy League schools out of the county like Oxford and even KAIST in Korea. This would help parents as they would not have to spend money on academies and as the one man said you have to do it for your kids to have friends or they will be left out so get rid of the academies. Korea also needs more affordable housing and push industry to maybe cities like Busan - give industries tax breaks if they move out of Seoul since its so densely populated which is pushes housing cost up. Also if I was a man I would not want to marry a Korean woman if she is only looking for a free house/car. In U.S. we get married and work toward those things together. Maybe if Korean parents stayed out of their childrens' love life more would get married.

    • @michelleblake6853
      @michelleblake6853 4 месяца назад

      While I understandyour point that academies are likely a huge part of the problem and better balance should be achieved, I don't think the US should be held up as an example in this case. Our school system is struggling and our education is not highly ranked among peer countries.

    First good interview.
    Second I hate that kids were their to hear the conversation especially when they say children are a burden.
    Third I’m always confused when the Korean society push education and studying so hard and want the children to succeed but if a female goes into the work force what I understand from other interviews that her position is not promised after brith or you have to make less . Is that true? I wouldn’t want to study most of my life get a decent and job and loose it if I gave brith. To me that doesn’t make sense.

      If a woman has a job in public sector (government officer, teacher, etc), their job is stable after birth and child-care break. If she has three kids , she can have 10 year break and still get her position back.
      But small private companies find excuses to fire the pregnant woman because they cannot run the business stably if the worker is in and out constantly. The government will have to give huge compensation to the small businesses to keep the pregnant employees.
      Also if she has a freelance job, the situation will be more unstable. Going back to work after childcare is very difficult in many aspects. The job market in Korea itself is not that flexible.

    • @dings7301
      @dings7301 11 месяцев назад +6

    A topic that's so enlightening with different POV's. Marriage & children sounds great initially, but people, today, are realizing that it's not the be all end all thing. It will forever alter your life and sometimes, not for the better. Longevity and commitment doesn't seem to apply as much with the present generation. Social Media has definitely made an impact. I also believe that we're becoming more selfish...more take and not enough give. Just my opinion.

    • @yucol5661
      @yucol5661 11 месяцев назад +2

    • @bexeila

      @@yucol5661 Right? It's silly how people without kids are unfairly called selfish. Many parents only have kids because they want approval from their family or to make their own "mini me". I also think young people are still willing to commit to a relationship but don't have the same desire or requirement that a relationship must lead to marriage that prior generations did.

      Tbh I think a lot of people from this generation are more emphatic an less selfish than older generations, they don't want to bring a kid to this world when they know they can't afford a house or (in case of women) a stable job after having kids, they seem to look for a stable life before starting a family so their kids won't suffer a lot but soon they realize that society and the economic problems are way too far for them to handle so they give up on having kids.
      I think that this is happening all over the world, I noticed how a lot of people in south america for example, have suffered a lot bcs their parents didn't have a stable job or a good financial state, so they have the mentality that "I suffered a lot bcs I was born by accident, If I have a kid I need money and a good work-life balance". However, it's true that a lot of people see negatively having kids, especially women since that means almost giving up on your professional career and dreams, but I agree that many people prefer spending their money on themselves than in kids, they are not interested in that at all but I don't like to call them "selfish" since it's their life and they have the right to decide if they create a family or not.

    "My daughter doesn't understand me" with all due respect, your daughter would be the one with the responsibility over the baby. Pressuring someone who is not monetarily or emotionally ready to bring a baby to this world is the perfect recipe to raise a broken human being... and all for what? So you can babysit for an hour and brag to your friends that your daughter had a baby? This is how children get stuck with emotionally unavailable parents who never wanted them to begin with. Let your daughter handle her life without the constant stress of a mother pressuring her to get married or have children.

    It is a complex problem with more than one issue - money/cost of housing certainly is a large part fed by the tradition that the man must have a house. In other cultures, the couple views that task as a joint task to be done together. They are willing to start off very small, a tiny apartment and work together to move forward. There is no requirement that the man must have a house. That may make a difference. Housing costs are impacting young people in other parts of the world, especially in cities, also.
    Women do not want to have to give up their careers to raise children, something that has been the social norm. Now they have a choice, a word used frequently in these interviews. It is no longer an obligation or a duty or an expectation. There has been, worldwide, the commonly held norm has been that all women want is to have children. Now there is choice, that commonly held norm does not seem to be the reality of want a woman wants from life. They are as complex people as men are.
    Societies will have to make is, for lack of a better word, easier for couples to raise children. More time to spend with the family, affordable housing, affordable if not free good education are just some of the pieces.

  • @BebeStellas
    @BebeStellas 10 месяцев назад +5

    It sounds like there is a lot of societal pressure to live a certain lifestyle when you have children. Parents are forced to pay for private lessons so that their children can fit in. So rather than it being about educational growth, it’s about peer pressure. I can completely understand why young people have no interest in marriage and having children. They don’t want the pressure their parents faced.

    Perhaps this is the time the youth of the world want their independence while they're still active and filled with the passion to do and want so many things. No one ever stays the same forever and people evolve and change. The social responsibilities of getting married and having children could very well come naturally later down the line, and even then it should be up to the youth who have finally done what and let's be honest, who they wanted with all their energy, to finally find themselves wanting to be a husband or wife and possibly parents. Perhaps we all should calm down and give them a little more time to live and figure things out.
    Also...asking and answering those questions in front of those children...oof.😓

    Wow! I found this interview to be fascinating. Thank you for the work you do in providing insight into Korean society and culture. I wasn't aware of the struggle and financial hardship many Korean families face in educating their children. I'm curious, is there no free public education available to families in Korea? In America, the government funds free public education for families, although grossly underfunded in many cases. Also, how do Koreans feel about homeschooling? With such a strong emphasis on education in Korea, I would imagine homeschooling would be frowned upon, but I don't know for sure. I would love to know the opinions about homeschooling from native Koreans. I personally homeschool my 3 kids and all are doing very well academically, socially, and emotionally. Although many homeschooling families in America struggle with the financial burden of homeschooling (there is no financial support from the government for homeschooling), there is financial assistance available for those families through a variety of non-profit organizations. I was able to start a small business supporting public school teachers choosing to leave the broken and underfunded public education system and transition to a private educator who works for themselves. I also assist families choosing to leave the broken public education system that no longer serves their child (ren) well. I serve as a bridge between talented teachers and families seeking an alternative form of education and work to connect the right family with the right teacher for them with a homeschool-type structure. In the beginning, when I first began this work, I was shocked to learn there are so many teachers and families leaving traditional education, but I quickly realized there is a steady exodus happening in America's education system. Thank you again for all your hard work with people from around the world. I really enjoy your content and look forward to learning more!

    In order to reverse the damage that the Korean government has created. They need to think outside the box like Viktor orban. Eliminate income tax for couples who remain married for the rest of their life.. also have a minimum of four or more children. In return for contributing to the country needs you don't pay any income tax.

    Have you actually interviewed women in their 20s for their ideal husband, I imagine most would say he needs to be earning 6 or 7 figures? This means only 1% of men are attractive enough to have babies with, hence women delaying family planning as they can't find that 1% man.

      i'm guessing you're a man? as a woman, as long as a partner is earning money i wouldn't care if it was more or less than me - just that they contributed!!!
      for me, the key issue is the expectation on women (still) to be primary caregiver ... not to mention the actual burden on both parents of looking after kids, spending huge sums of money, and generally being fully responsible for another human being's welfare.

    I have watched several like minded videos on this about S.K. for a while now. My observation is that some mentioned the fact that the country does not make it suitable for raising kids. But there are other several key factors that should be noted as well S.K's patriarchal and misogynist culture does not make it friendly for women to want to have to be married, have kids or just truly be themselves. Punishment related to assault cases are very small, women are ridiculed for wanting to go back to work or even going on maternity leave is an opportunity for the company to fire them. Not to mention there is the salary disparity that completely sucks etc. (Recommend doing a interview on this). In addition, I understand that government gives money towards "parents", yet at the same time are or if its been approved by now are planning to increase the work hours to 69 hrs per week. This in essence voids the incentive of becoming a parent. Being a parent is more than a full time job, how would that fit in raising a child? There is no balance, from an observer view the country does not allow that either culturally or fiscally for one to achieve their goal of increasing the birth rate. As long as things stay the same in both aspects, this will not change nor will it motivate others to become parents.

    The real reason for Korea’s low birth rate is:
    Because it is difficult to make a living,
    This is because men in Korea have to be really, really careful about what they say and do to Korean women (from kids to grandmothers!)
    Even if a woman does something wrong, it's okay if she says she feels bad.
    That's because Korean law is like that and the Ministry of Women's Affairs exists.
    All foreign men who come to Korea should be very careful about what they say and do to Korean women.
    We are confident that Korea's birth rate will increase from 0.8 -> 0.7 -> 0.5 -> 0.1 over the next 10 years.

      That's not what they are saying. Kids need to know real life and it's hard and that's all they are saying. In the West everything in front of kids needs to be so sanitized and I don't believe that's the correct way to inform kids.

    • @dings7301
      @dings7301 11 месяцев назад

      @TheMariemarie16 True the West may try to shelter kids too much. Each parent with young kids they interviewed said their education is a burden to them. They are old enough to understand how important it is to be high scoring. How is saying they are a burden going to make them any less stressed about school? They need to hear about the real world. Should it really be at 6 years old? These kids are no older than 10 hearing how stressful, expensive, and selfish the newer generation is for not having children. Will that really make their kids want to be parents in the future? They could have just put the kids 5 feet away. They shouldn't hear these things from their own parents.

    People back then think marriage is a necessity, so they do it even though it's hard. Because mens back then are strong af. They go to war knowing they'll get killed 100%, they do it proudly.
    Present generation, they think marriage is not a necessity but options, they can make a choice. If it's hard, they won't do it. If it's dangerous, they won't do it. Younger generations only will do something if it's easy, not dangerous and brings good money.
    Not sure why present generation is weak af. Probably the weakest era in human history. Throw something hard to them and watch they die instantly.

      Reversing the population pyramid where almost 50% of the population will be composed of elders doesn't sound like a good choice, unless you like the prospect of working until your last day on this Earth (because there is no way the pension system will be able to sustain that, especially since there will be fewer and fewer workers) and having a completely overburdened health system
