my grandfather is a retired barber that did things the old school way, i still have him give me a straight razor shave even though im an adult!! there isn't any more old school barbers where i live its all chain everyhing.
My wife got me a barber shop straight razor shave for my 49th birthday. Guys, if you haven't had the real deal like in this video, you've never had a shave. That one blade got my face smooth as a baby's ass with no irritation. One blade, used correctly will shave you better than these new 4 and 5 blade things.
Man, it's been a while since my last proper straight razor shave at a genuine barber shop. It has always been a relaxing and refreshing experience. Thanks for the vid.
I've been straight razor shaving for about a year and a half, so have gotten fairly good at my shave (I was once told it's about a hundred shaves until you really have the hang of it!!). This guy's technique is astounding. When he opened up with that backhand swipe and got the skinny sideburn perfect, I was hugely envious....Plus, you can tell, he's got a quality blade (straights cost much bux nowadays for a really fine one)
I was lucky enough to get a cut and hot towel shave of this fine gentleman not long before he departed! This man could have done this blind! They really treat you like family in that place! Which is why I was surprised when the bill came! Haha
It's so nice to see a skilled barber and also nice to see him wearing traditional uniform, most barbers go about in tshirts and jeans nowadays. People don't bother anymore, it's such a shame.
I loved the video. There are few things in this world more relaxing than a good old fashion barber shop shave. I got one once. I am tempted to go back to that barber shop (I doubt it is even still there but it would be worth a shot) to get one again.
I've just watched about a half dozen straight razor shaving videos. This is the first one where the barber used a big enough towel to adequately cover the throat. Everyone does a great job covering the forehead (which doesn't matter) with that signature folding technique, but most leave the throat (a very sensitive zone) without an adequate hot towel treatment. Well played, sir. Well played indeed!
Old timey barbers know how to provide a proper gentlemen's haricut and shave. There are a few in America, but you have to seek them out. If you can find one, then you will be glad you took the time to find such a place. These places provide a sterling service, and excellent conversation.
The best shaving clip i've seen so far... no irritating music track. Just lovely ambient with static camera. The razor belt shot was a real bonus! Query: Does this barber still use manual hair clippers? Would love to see him use that
I've read that applying the shaving cream, followed by a hot towel or shower is a great pre-shave ritual. The glycerin, moisterizers, and oils in the cream soften the beard which makes for a better shave and not to mention easier on the razor blades.
i get one a week just to treat myself at my barber shop. thank your dad for keeping this talent and skill alive today when so many barbers rely on electric trimmers to do the job your dad can do by hand. just one question, what was that mist he put on the towel at the very end?
There is one in my town to :) And if u are a regular custumer u might get a box where u can have your personal shaving things. A blade, soap, brush and a whiskey of your liking.
@kreativedevelopments Yes. We wet them first. The towels are put through a mangle to remove excess water and then into the hot towel steamer. You can see the mangle at about 10 sec in the video. Regards.
@DrClawizdead The lather cleans the skin and softens the hair. Soft hair makes for a smoother, closer shave with no irritation. It's the best part of the shave. The heat from the towel makes the skin sweat. Pores on the skin open up and release oil, sweat, salt and dirt. The lather is basically a mild soap. It's lifts oil, dirt, and dead skin cells off the face. The alkali in the lather cause the hair cuticle to flake off. This allows the hair to absorb water from the towel and become soft.
@shzze its a 'strop' its a leather strap usually with a grit ( i think the good ones are diamond grit) and it hones the blade after each shave so you don't have to use a sharpening stone or other tool as often.
he puts talc on his hands to dry them so he doesnt drop or let the razor slip at all. he also applies some talc to his face to dry it up before the lotion
I can't wait to go in there again for a hot towel shave. I was in the shop on Saturday and got a great haircut, but I want to go back for a shave sometime this week.
This is a dying art. I've called every barbershop in a fifty mile radius, and none of them are old school barbers. I'd gladly pay extra for this kind of treatment.
@TeslaDRay You can still get safety razors by mail order from the vermont Country Store, amongst others. blades as well, although here in Texas most well stocked Mens grooming stores carry double edged blades.
Worked with a guy who got one of those shaves, Hot towels the whole works. He normally shaves every day. But after getting one of these barbershop shaves he didn't have to shave for four days.
i know that in Massachusetts and a lot of other states... those mugs and brushes are illegal to use because of no way to completely sanitize them... but the straight edge razor is still legal to use as long as its completely sanitized before and after each person... to avoid having to hone and strop a razor, most barbers use one time use disposable straight edge blades for their razors....
For those who want to try this or experience more straight razor shaves, I suggest learning how to do it. Yes it takes a little while and it can cost a lot of money upfront. But once you become proficient at it, it is better than any other shave. I went "straight" 2 years ago and love it. As for the customer in the vid, aye, he does need to relax and close those eyes.
I'm not too good with stropping, but did anyone find that the barber held the strop with more slack than usual? I was told that youve got to keep the strop as tense as possible.
@martisbvk I never understood many of the procedures and the "whys" of a proper shave. Thank you for pointing it out. This information will definitely aid the results for when I shave at home. I would imagine that a straight razor is preferable when shaving, correct? (I mean, when one takes the time for all these other steps, it would be foolhardy to use a cheap disposable razor)
No problem! :) Actually "American Patrol" is only in the first part of the video, I don't know what the other is. It might be an other Glenn Miller tune.
Good point about the term cut-throat. There are a few theories including your own. My favourite is where Gillette used is a negative term to promote their own product which was called a "Safety Razor"!! This early advertising by Gillette really brought the term cut-throat to the fore. Thanks,Tonstrina
@Bogframe You're exactly right. I just switched to a safety razor, and it's nothing like shaving with those crappy disposable razors of five blades, seven blades, thirty blades, or whatever the hell they're selling now.
I have a shave in Paul Mole's New York (est. 1913) the other week to compare it with this place. There is no comparison to the Waldorf experience. All the attention to detail and rituals you get here you don't get elsewhere.
That depends on the barber you go to, really. I went to one earlier this year, February 16 to be exact, and they charged $27 for a shave!!! "No way!!!", I thought, when I heard the price!
Hi loving the vids,I notice that your strop is very loose when honing and I am led to believe this rounds the edge of the blade`completely the opposite to what everyone says you should not do,could you explain how you manage to keep a sharp edge this way please
@FleetStreetNightmare Look up some spartucus blades by thiers issard, or some wade and butcher blades. They usually set the record for heavy blades. Lovely to have a bit of weight though, it adds momentum and stability IMO. I shave with a blade almost an inch wide.
@vangard213 We do!!! It is part of our program. If you cannot find a professional barbershop to offer it, go to a barber school. They are required to do it for their state board test. And they are not allowed to begin shaves until about 1/4 of their way into school. Happy hunting!
Brilliant video, a real traditional barber shop, in fact I don't think you could get any more original. It is not often we see a original towel steamer and a proper straight razor that needs to be honed and stroped, I have had many shaves from barbers and they all have used a straight razor that uses a disposable razor blade
@004kri Stupid question...read the video description... And by the way, english is not my native language, not even the first foreign language i learned, and i recognized the irish accent though...
What do you mean by the first question...i mean isn't it kind of obvious? They put shaving cream onto the client's face with their hands...2nd question, he's just massaging it in to soften the hairs.
@MrErebos It's common practice for the final pass with a straight razor, it's only multi-blade razors that'll shred your face if you go against the grain.
This vid helped me get through my first year of sobriety 14 years ago. Thank you.
my grandfather is a retired barber that did things the old school way, i still have him give me a straight razor shave even though im an adult!! there isn't any more old school barbers where i live its all chain everyhing.

This is how men should shave.
You and your dad are keeping a great tradition alive!
The vintage look of that barbershop is just wonderful
The music is fantastic! Enjoyed the whole clip; thanks for posting.
I was lucky enough to get a cut and hot towel shave of this fine gentleman not long before he departed! This man could have done this blind!

Departed? Damn, R.I.P. :(

The barber is a very professional and relaxing gentleman to watch.
Liam is such a talented barber. His skill is amazing to watch with every view of this video that I do. 😀
There's just something so very therapudic and calming about a nice haircut or a shave from a good barber.

That was fun to see & what a lost art. There aren't too many barbers out there who know how to use a straight razor anymore.

Query: Does this barber still use manual hair clippers? Would love to see him use that
I want to go to a old school barber shop, with the music and the decor. Just a fantasy I've always desired
my grandfather was an old time barber,he has been cutting my hair my whole life those guys are a dying breed.
I've read that applying the shaving cream, followed by a hot towel or shower is a great pre-shave ritual. The glycerin, moisterizers, and oils in the cream soften the beard which makes for a better shave and not to mention easier on the razor blades.
Dang that looks like a slice o' heaven on earth. Wish I had one of these old time barber shops near my neck of the woods.
i get one a week just to treat myself at my barber shop. thank your dad for keeping this talent and skill alive today when so many barbers rely on electric trimmers to do the job your dad can do by hand. just one question, what was that mist he put on the towel at the very end?

the master is so smooth at it.....surely is all come from time and experience. I would definitely trust to the master..
the cream before the towel is a preshave technique to soften the beard. Whether you use shave oil or cream, it has the same affect.
Snazzy, nice setup!
For those who might be interested, the first song in the background is American Patrol by Glenn Miller Orchestra

It is talcum powder, standard practice at the Waldorf, in order to dry the hands completely before handling the straight razor.
DeWittAlbright i was wondering what that was. Talc. Interesting
Answer: yes he does use manual clippers. He calls it the bespoke cut. Nothing quite like it. Cold metal against the scalp.
This is absolutely fantastic.
wow, how old school is that place man. I would love that place!
What a great looking barber shop!
Looks like an awesome shave ! .......& relaxing.
aint nothing better than a barber straight blade shave

still what every shop should aspire to be.
@ledZeppelin7680 it helps grip the face when you are shaving. He already applied the cream.
日本のニコニコ動画のサイトでも紹介されていて、探してた動画だったので、見ることができてとても嬉しいです。
Thenk you uploadhing!!
U can see how he hold his breathe :)
great vid :) and the Waldorf Barbershop
I need one of these. Very relaxed shave
seriously this christmas i better wake up and find the entire Waldorf barber shop under my tree.
For those who want to try this or experience more straight razor shaves, I suggest learning how to do it. Yes it takes a little while and it can cost a lot of money upfront. He is using a straight razor. It does not use blades. The razor strop brings the edge back up.
Great video, thinking about getting a straight razor myself
I'm not too good with stropping, but did anyone find that the barber held the strop with more slack than usual? I was told that youve got to keep the strop as tense as possible.

american patrol-glenn miller!
love the nostalgia of this thanks guys!!
No problem! :) Actually "American Patrol" is only in the first part of the video, I don't know what the other is. It might be an other Glenn Miller tune.
The only shaving video I have seen with Five Stars.
wow this is a vintage barbershop, very nice, i'd like to have a shave there

The entire setting (music and old school barber) seem to give a "Fallout" feel to it. :)
@Bogframe You're exactly right. I just switched to a safety razor, and it's nothing like shaving with those crappy disposable razors of five blades, seven blades, thirty blades, or whatever the hell they're selling now.

Where I am from there is no men's barbershop but if there was it would be full of men to get a good shave by a fellow such as this man
That depends on the barber you go to, really. I went to one earlier this year, February 16 to be exact, and they charged $27 for a shave!!! "No way!!!", I thought, when I heard the price!
Also, what was that powder he jazzes up his hands with before the shave? He pulling a Lebron?
Can't fathom all the negative comments on the dude sitting in the chair he hasn't done anything to warrant all this negativity
What a Horrible Customer. Arrogant as Hell
ZCorp Alpha
explain sir
agreed, its weird how people talk bad about someone from a video made 6 years ago.
@DrClawizdead it opens the pores and softens the stubble causing a closer shave
@boxersrock1 Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but I believe it was talcum powder.
Hi loving the vids,I notice that your strop is very loose when honing and I am led to believe this rounds the edge of the blade`completely the opposite to what everyone says you should not do,could you explain how you manage to keep a sharp edge this way please

That's an awesome shave, right there.
The Waldorf is at 13 Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2. Thanks.
just went there and got a shave, great place
@tonstrina I haven't had the joy of getting a shave at a barber yet...gotta try it one of these days ^_^
me as a beginner with my local China product vendor razor... it was such tense moment when i felt the blade kinda get stuck
What does Liam apply to his hands just before he starts shaving the customer?
@vangard213 We do!!! It is part of our program. If you cannot find a professional barbershop to offer it, go to a barber school. They are required to do it for their state board test. And they are not allowed to begin shaves until about 1/4 of their way into school. Happy hunting!
I think I'm responsible for 100 of those hits... This is one of my favorite vids
@004kri it's in Dublin, Ireland.
잠 안올때 보러옵니다
@cncdude1 More than welcome, drop in any time. We also have a museum of barberana if there is such a thing.
some things should never change. This is one of them.
Brilliant video, a real traditional barber shop, in fact I don't think you could get any more original.
It is not often we see a original towel steamer and a proper straight razor that needs to be honed and stroped, I have had many shaves from barbers and they all have used a straight razor that uses a disposable razor blade
Good one, did you think of that one by yourself?
What an awesome shave
He applies soap, then the hot towel, then more soap?
Why the soap in the first place? Or is it a preshave lotion/cream?
love that old time swing music
Yes it would. The razor belongs to the customer. Normally we would use the open razor with replaceable blades for general shaving. Regards.
That's a really fancy shave.
@004kri Stupid question...read the video description...
And by the way, english is not my native language, not even the first foreign language i learned, and i recognized the irish accent though...
@muscleandtan we still have a few around, I found one last year and wont go any where else now!
big band swing in the background?
Could somebody please tell me what the 2nd song is? The one playing when the barber is stropping the razor
Love the place. Really classic.
What do you mean by the first question...i mean isn't it kind of obvious? They put shaving cream onto the client's face with their hands...2nd question, he's just massaging it in to soften the hairs.
Hey the dude getting the shave, what haircut is that you got? I can't seem to explain that style when I get a haircut :(
Old school -- the way it should be. Nice job.
@MrErebos It's common practice for the final pass with a straight razor, it's only multi-blade razors that'll shred your face if you go against the grain.
what's better for a sensitive skin: electric razor or a normal one?
Great stuff, love this!
