Drip irrigation is a topic than can quickly become overwhelming. In this video we are doing our best to make drip irrigation as clear as possible. This basic installation in the gardens around the patio is a beginners guide to bringing targeted water to the plants in our backyard landscape.
Next year we will add to this basic infrastructure with some additional emitters and smaller tubing. Our goal today is to create a basic grid.
We hope that our explanation is helpful and gives you the confidence to install drip in your backyard or landscape.

Best version of drip irrigation I’ve watched… very clear and soooooo helpful! Thank you guys!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I sometimes use hot water in a small cup to dip the ends of stubborn brown drip tube when I'm unable to attach it to my couplers. The hot water makes the tubing more flexible and easy to work with!
That’s a great idea!
You two made that look super easy! I’m saving this video for spring! Glad Christopher is feeling better!
Yes! Thank you!
I agree! I haven’t checked yet, I’m hoping you put the links to all the materials you are using. Great video!
I did include all the links in the description!
Im definitely going to attempt drip irrigation. The step by step explanation is very helpful:)
You can do it!
I put mine in in late June and it was like a Tetris game. Trying to figure out how to get around all these blooming plants. But I’m so glad I did. The mosquitoes were eating me alive when I was standing out there for hours watering.
That was us when we put drip in the hydrangea room!
Christopher, glad to see you back and feeling better❤
Thanks
Glad you're back Christopher hope you're feeling better and glad you're back in the garden with your buddy 🌿🌱🌻
Me too!
Hi garden friends. Thanks for showing me how to setup a drip irrigation system…. It’s so clear and wonderful instructions… my husband and I did ours last year and we dit it the wrong way…we will redo it next spring following exactly ur instructions. Thanks again …. So glad that Christopher is feeling better. 😊
Hopefully it won’t be too much work!
❤ you two work so well together ❤ makes the garden chores easier! Good stuff today!
Yes it does!
😮 This is very helpful! I now think I’m going to try this in my front garden, as it’s the smallest. THANK YOU
I'm so glad this was helpful!
Best explanation of installation of drip ever. What brand do you use.
I stick with Rainbird for the most part. I linked the pieces in the description
I quickly added some drip mid summer due to drought and after watching this video I'm actually looking forward to editing what I have and adding more while adopting the process you guys so kindly shared in this video. Thanks so much!
Sounds great! We will share the more “advanced” stuff next season!
Eric, I thought the same thing about pulling the black tube back 😂
Haha!
This was a great video explaining irrigation! I find it so intimidating but you make it look do-able. Glad to see you back! Although Eric held the fort down nicely while you were down & out, it's nice to see the 2 of you together again...Team work makes the dream work.
You can do it! Thank you!
Hey, I am new to your channel and I just wanted to thank you... Your video's have been the easiest and most detailed and have given me the confidence to install drip. I am new to landscaping and maintaining my plants/trees etc... and your guys were exactly what I needed. 🥰
Welcome aboard! I'm so glad the videos have been helpful!
This! This is what we needed! Thank you both!
You are welcome! Part two and coming in spring!
Welcome back Christopher I’m glad you’re feeling better 👍😊🙏❤️
I am!
You two are so entertaining and informative. I've watched many irrigation videos and yours was the most comprehensive and understandable.
A tip for uncoiling tubing from the spool so you don't have to fight its inherent nature of popping up. Aaron from Garden Answer says to roll the spool as if it is a tire instead of pulling out tubing from the stationary spool. So start at one end of garden and secure that tube end, then roll the spool as you pull tube from it until you reach your destination.
Now, you guys cut off shorter sections to piece with the brown tubing, and that works too. 😊
I hope my description was clear.
Btw, did your garden zone change with newly released planting zone map? Mine (in Minneapolis) went up half a zone. We're now 5a. 🎉 I already had zone 5 plants, it just means I won't have to worry if they'll survive our winters.
Good tip! We are JUST on the line of moving to 6a now, but we are still 5b!
Yeeeessss! I finally get it! Definitely going to do this in the spring. THANK YOU!!!!!
You got this!
I’ve been wanting to do drip for years. This makes it look so easy. Spring project for sure. Thank you. Love you guys ❤
You can do it!
Glad to see you are feeling better Christopher.
Thank you!
Glad to see Christopher is doing much better, great tutorial on drip irrigation and I will definitely follow your advice installing drip now while plants are dormant and haven't applied new compost yet. Great video as always take care and enjoy your Thanksgiving.
Awesome, Happy Turkey!
Well, looks easy enough with the right supplies and equipment. But, I still would need a helper untangling and lining up the drip. Not so sure about the app to turn or and off tho, for those of us "last of the cave people" lol😋 Great video!!!!
I hear that!!! Drip usually takes a long long time on my own! Luckily once the main grid is in everything else is a breeze
Thanks for making it easy! I’ve been working on mine this summer and have been tweaking it as I go. I like your set up best!👍😎❤️
Thanks!
Oh my goodness! I think I can really do this now! You two are the best teachers ever! Thank you so much! 💚💚💚💚💚💚
You can do it!
Wow Eric you did a great job cleaning the Limelight Hydrangea hedge in your previous videos. Welcome back Christopher glad you are feeling better. Christopher you should be teacher you made the whole drip irrigation system video very easy and straightforward. Can you please talk more about quick connet and make more videos like this. Thank you so much in advance 😊
Surely! In spring we will build on this
So happy this morning, a new video, I check every day.
Thanks! We post on Tuesday and Friday!
I installed drips to all my garden beds late this summer and it was a big help. It is so nice to automate this process. I like how I am able to schedule and to adjust the waster schedule on my phone. It is very helpful to see how other installed drips in their garden.
Wonderful!
So glad that you are doing better, Christopher!!!
Thanks!
Nice to see Christopher feeling better!! Informative video for those who do drip. I don't have drip but your videos are so helpful, I'm sure people who have it can benefit from this!
Thanks!☺️
By far the most relaxing gardening videos ever. I love how kind, funny, thoughtful, and well spoken you both are. Subscribed and sincerely look forward to every video!
Any plans on moving in the future to make larger garden areas or will you continue developing that back area?
We aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I think we will just continue developing our space!
I am older and find the brown couplers really hard to connect. I use the Bic multi-purpose candle lighter to heat the tube and it slides right in. When I need to remove coupler, I cut it away from tube with a few inches of tube and collect them in a bucket. Then I boil them and they pull right out.
That’s a really good idea. Eric didn’t believe me when I was wrestling them in. When it is cold it is so hard!
I am going to try this..very self explanatory. Thank you❤
Wonderful!
So glad to see Christopher on the mend! A couple of questions for you -- do you have a preferred source for your drip supplies? And after the recent USDA zone changes, are you still 5b or did you move up half a zone like a lot of folks?
We get drip supplies mostly from Home Depot or Amazon. I put links in our description. As for the zone…we are ON the line between 5b and 6a so we will be remaining grow for me 5b
Christopher glad you getting better and back. What I do when its to cold and to make all tubing work is to use hot water and let the end sit in the water for 15-30 seconds and they slide right on any of the connections you are trying to do. It also helps to remove the tubing off small errors of tubing.
Edit: We are now a zone 6a by the way. Are you guys selling those bennies? So cute.
Oh that’s a great idea. We aren’t doing any merch yet. Maybe next year!
Nice cant wait to buy one. @@growformegardening
@@growformegardening Hope you guys reply. It was so cool these few days i added the remainder of my tubing. But having a problem so came back to this video to see what they problem is. Since we live in the same area I was going to ask do you guy use the pressure (PSI portion)? I think you said you dont, you just have normal home pressure. Is this correct?
@@kp-gbuniqueinterest we do use a pressure regulator at the hose bib. It’s part of the three piece connector.
You guys are the master gardeners, you do easy way, we appreciate you guys❤
So nice of you
Nice to see you are better Christopher, enjoyed watching you two. Definitely much easier to install in the fall 😊
Yes! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing. I never thought of doing drip irrigation additions in the fall but I might do some before it gets too cold. Welcome back Christopher.
Go for it!
I love all the info about how some plants don't need to be on the drip system. I wish i had seen this before. I've got my fingers crossed that the plants that got too much water will come back in the spring. Do you guys have any other videos about which plants need more water and which need less? I don't have my sedums on drip but I didn't know I shouldn't have my salvias on it either.
It’s so tough, we would never say “don’t do this”…for us, annual salvia definitely needs drip but established perennials don’t.
Loved the vid! I have really wanted to install drip irrigation in my landscape. I always found it a little intimidating, but thanks to both of you, l feel emboldened 😂😂😂 l think I'm going to try! As usual, I loved spending the morning with you both.❤❤❤❤❤😊
Go for it!
Love you guys, glad Christopher is feeling better. I also garden in zone 5 in iowa, but i garden in an apartment setting, but this was the best explanation i have seen. Keep up the awesome content
That is awesome!
I just installed drip for the first time this season and those tubes are hard to connect! I ended up using a lighter to soften the ends and it worked so well! I tried the warm water in mug thing and the water would get cold too quickly
I have to try the lighter trick
Good morning Eric I am watching Christopher putting in drip and wanted to thank you both!!!!! Christopher makes it look so easy!!!! Great video from both of you. 🤗❤️. I always thought it was so difficult but it’s not bad at all!! So glad Christopher is back and doing better 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻😁. Also I wanted to tell you it would be awesome if you did more videos on shopping spots while our gardens sleep this winter👏🏻. I know I really enjoy those too and I’m sure other followers do too😊. Thank you boys and if I don’t get to say it have a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving. Love you boys❤❤
Thank you so much... Have a great holiday!
I am going to try this..very self explanatory. Thanks❤
I'm glad it was helpful!!!
Thank you for explaining this slowly and in a basic way! The others go so fast and rattle off names too fast for me to follow.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the great video! You’ve made a very intimidating future task for me feel less intimidating! I’ll use this video in early Spring as reference! Glad Christopher is feeling better!
I’m glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the tutorial, well explained.
You are welcome!
This was very informative. One question: how do you winterize the tubing? With the cold winters I'm sure that you get up there (I garden in MD), I'm sure that you can't just disconnect the hose from the faucet with water remaining in the drip tubing.
You can! The emitters let excess water out so there is no risk of bursting
Thank you for this informative video! I’m 5b near Syracuse and I never thought to do this in the fall. Super helpful explanation and the genius behind it is you remember where you need the water the most- fresh off the growing season.
Yes!
This is great - I have same winter here in 🇨🇦 and you can just leave the tubing there over winter under the snow?
Yup, the holes allow the water to escape
Glad you are feeling better Christopher ❤. Very informative video 😊, I am so glad I don't need to do drip irrigation in my garden in Ontario, Canada 😅. Even in the hottest part of the summer my garden is fairly small and easy to water, but even in the hottest part of the summer we tend to have our fair share of thunderstorms ⛈.
Love your garden 😍 and your videos. I relate so much to Eric and his avoidance of drip and bulbs 😅. You guys make a great team though ❤.
These watering chores can be a pain in the butt. The drip really helps. Thanks for watching!
I just checked and we had 112 days of rain this year 😮
Wow!!!
When I look on line there is such wide varieties of tubing and prices. So is there one you like working with better? Is the tubing of different quality? Just new at this and you demo it very nice that I feel I might be able to tackle it now. Thank you again for such great info, and the step by step.
I honestly think the Rainbird products are the most consistent. I’ve tried cheaper versions and sometimes the tubing feels cheap. The couplers from rainbird are the most secure too.
Great video. I need to install drip but i'm a little hesitant to start because i don't know where to start. I have overhead sprinklers installed in my beds and i think there's a way to convert them to drip. Other thing that keeps me from doing this is how do you know how long is too long of a line ?
I have run realllllly long lines and not lost water pressure. It’s really a matter of trying it out. As our garden has grown I have split areas into their own lines if needed
Christopher have you seen the quick connect that Hose link makes. They’re wonderful and they don’t leak even as they age
I have not! I'll check them out
How are you going to tackle the annuals? Brown drip tubing?
Most likely. That's when we get into the 1/4" tubing with drip every 6-12" spacing.
It’s really hard for me to wrestle the connectors on so I carry a lighter in my pocket and heat the ends for just a second to make it easier.
I am going to try that next year
When I drip, you drip, we drip 🎧
hahahaha
How do you figure out the length at which your water pressure will handle?
I did some research on it and it was very mixed messages. I’ve run very long lines and had no trouble, but I think you just get a sense of what is too much.
What is that half post in the middle of the gravel near the water source?
That is just a piece of 4x4 lumber. We cemented it into the ground like a fence post so we could install the hose reel.
Hello 5b guys.
Check the new usda guide , you may be 6a now!
We are literally ON the line. It’s so funny. We were worried about our channel name!
We are ON the line between 5b and 6a so we will be remaining grow for me 5b!
Thank goodness. Thought you would have to be the gardeners formerly known as… ala Prince
By the way we bought a gorgeous vanderwolf pine. We are just south of you in the Hudson valley too. Thanks for all you do.
That's awesome.... such a pretty tree!
