Vintage Sansui AU-101 amplifier re-cap

- A customer sent this Sansui AU-101for re-cap. Obviously, it had been re-capped before. The customer request for audio grade capacitors. I have bunch of audio caps in-hand , so I just used them it in this AU-101 amplifier.
The bias are way off and I re-adjust by replace the jumper at the emitter pin of power transistors to a temporary 0.68 ohm resistors and measure the voltage drop across it.

You make this look very easy, you must be an expert,with that in mind would you say a beginner could do this type of work?. The tool that you used to pop out the caps from the back what is that called?. When soldering the cap back in would it matter if solder touched another part of solder on a separate bit? Sorry for all the questions its just i don't think I could afford a professional to do this for me and it looks like an awesome thing to learn. Thankyou for putting this video out was really helpful.
Hi，thanks for your comment. its not hard to learn but at least you need to have some basic electrical and electronic knowledge. My first repair was 40+ years ago. back then, I have very limited knowledge , I have no schematics and no internet to refer to. I need to draw my own a complete schematic. Please seek for more info on internet and I bet you can do that too, just keep in mind that this amplifier is main powered , you need to be very very careful to deal with AC powered device, AC power can kill. The tool to remove old solder from the board is desoldering pump. Yes, you need to carefully solder all caps without short-circuit the pin to any others on the board. Polarity need to be double checked too. hope this help.

Heard all these recapping will 100% change the character of the au 101 which in the 1st place unintended ..

Hi, fascinating video of your restoration job. Learnt a few tips from same. Have a AU 505. Right channel when warmed up give a static noise on speakers. Any tips.
cracking and popping noises are very common in Sansui vintage amp. if you still can hear those noises even you already turn down your volume to minimum , you need to check if your power amp's transistors ( those small TO92 type ) , some of them might have leaking problem .

Basically, all electrolytic capacitors will degrade faster than any other parts. I download schematics, and wrote down all electrolytic capacitors value, and bought best ( but not too expensive ) caps I can find locally, I re-cap the amp and installed a new ALPS volume control , also re-adjusted the bias as shown in the video. hope this helps. coming soon will be a recap video of Sansui AU-505.

I too have the exact same amplifier. It sounds wonderful. If I am to have re-capped, I want certainly high quality components. With my skill level, it would take me forever. Typically what would you estimate the cost to have just the caps updated? All of the POTS and switches appear to be pristine..I know it will vary, I was just trying to get a rough idea..

I have a similar Sansui AU505 amplifier. I have changed some Capacitors not all yet. The problem now is I don't get sounds on the left side. Right side has sounds. I have changed one output transistor on the left side. The original is 2SD188. Changed to the equivalent of BD317. Do I need to change both on the left channel ?
The other issue is I get a cracking sound and distortion on both speakers. What's the problem ?

I'm going to restore a telefunken hr 240 receiver, it has a tired sound and needs a recap, I'm not sure which capacitors should be audio and which ones don't, mainly, the source needs to be a capacitor for audio?

Hi. Thanks for your comment. Elna or Panasonic FC , or Panasonic FM are good for the power supply and regulator side. Since this amplifier used TRIO PA-80W thick film power amplifier module which is slightly a little soft at bass region , i will suggest small coupling capacitor such as Nichicon fine gold, or Nichicon SW , for the power amplifier, and try to use silmic II for the pre-amp coupling capacitor. Thats just my 2 cents worth. I believe it can sound slightly better and more balance than the original . hope this help.
Yes, Elna is good capacitor, especially Elna Silmic, it can sound far better than the original one. try to choose Elna audio grade and avoid Elna low ESR .

What is the value of the resistor to set bias? I am looking to recap mine also.
Any value between 0.2~1 ohm , at least 2 watts.
Hello:), It's look a really good whole the "instruction". Could you pls give a paramiters and names of caps, alps volume control, and power transistors (have you re-cap them). When you re-adjust bias have you re-cap againt resistor 0.68 ohm or it stay (you wrote temporary) so this is why a ask :) sory for my not perfect writing English.
Hi. I just uploaded Sansui AU-101 service manual. Please download AU-101 service manual from my web page : audiophilediyer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/sansui-au101.pdf , from the service manual , please find the part list and you can list out all electrolytic capacitors. Try to get Panasonic FM series or FC series capacitors, which is very good quality and also very good sounding, from www.element14.com or others supplier. I used various audio grade capacitors just because I have a lot of them . Most of the time , I will replace the failed power transistor with TIP41 , or 2SD313. Both works perfectly. To adjust the bias, you need to add 0.68 ohm as shown above, and you can either keep it there, or removed and put the jumper back onto the PCB.
As for the volume , you can buy any 250K type A with loudness tapping, means your volume control need to have 8 pin. With the re-cap job as mentioned above, your AU-101 should be a good sounding amplifier and last for long time. Hope this help.

This guy has no idea why he is replacing all those caps. My unit has been working 40 years with the same caps.
Thanks for your comment.You are so lucky that your unit still working great with those old caps. not everyone has the same luck as you though. people sent this amp to me with highly distorted sound, unbalanced, with audible hum .You can try to search electrolytic capacitors life span and you will know why all caps have to be replaced. Back then , most electrolytic caps has average life span of 1000 hours.
I have expired food that I can still eat, doesn't mean fresh wouldn't be better.
