I highly recommend carrying a dummy wallet with a small amount of money and old redundant atm cards in your pocket and keep the real clip wallet tucked inside trousers/shorts in case you get robbed. I wish I done this when I was mugged which thankfully has only happened once (young, naive & in dodgy area). Thanks for the informative vid.

Thank you. GOOD solid advice . Add:
    A. Your own bar of soap with a plastic case to place it back into so that others in the hostel will not use it on their own...ahem... body parts.
    B. Your own small tube of shampoo.
    C. Waist , stomach or so called fanny pack belts to place all your credit cards, ID, passport, debit cards, gift cards, cash, currency, etc.in one safe place .
    D. An extra pair of eye glasses , if you wear them.
    E. A small screw driver and tiny screws in case your eyeglasses come apart and the lenses pop out.
    F. Ear buds or ear phones to listen in silence and to block out noise....sorry to say, but nearly all ear plugs are not very effective to block out snoring, and or other noisy people.
    G. One small box of laundry soap.
    H. Extra... clear plastic zippered styled baggies to put your dirty clothes in...or cleaned clothes as the case may be.
    I. Hand nail and toe clippers.
    J. A tiny flash light....so when entering a room you do not cause great noise and wake up fellow guests plus it allows you to avoid injury and to do things you need to do before going to sleep.
    K. A small packet of Kleenex tissues.
    L. One SM. roll of duct tape.
    M. Disposable razors, 1 or 2.
    N. A paperback novel to read.
    O. In European countries esp.: small packets of actual plain yellow American style French 's brand tiny mustard packets.
    P. Your best Swiss multi purpose Jack knife.
    Q. An old style can opener , useful esp in hostels with no kitchen cooking facilities.
    R. One folded standard sized sheet. It is shocking how many hostels either do not have sheets! ...or charge extra for sheets...or have sketchy looking unclean looking sheets!
    S. A tablet computer, ... bigger screen for watching movies than a tiny cell phone and far lighter and less spacious or bulky for your backpack or suitcase than a bulky space hog consuming heavy lap top computer.
T.small size tube of toothpaste and special size tiny tooth brush .
    U. Water bottle. In some nations like Norway, Finland, and Sweden, the h2o is purer, healthier , and cleaner than bottled water and, of course, tap water is free and cheaper than constantly buying bottled H2O!
    V. A credit or debit card with a pin number !
    W. A photo copy of your driver's license and of your passport placed inside a closed airtight ( thus water resistant) plastic baggie.
    X. A deck of cards. Part of the fun of hostels or humble hotels is meeting new people who like to play card games and who may become your lifelong friend!
Y.A small plain , blank note pad or blank booklet with a couple of ink pens.
    Z. A cheap but workable wrist watch that glows in the dark when you want to check the time.

Amazon (USA at least) has laundry sheets. Take up practically no space. Dissolve in water.
toothpaste tablets (also Amazon). They “foam” when mixed with your saliva. I cut mine in half. Great space saver, no need to put in TSA security plastic bag, easy to calculate how many you will need.

Super useful so you don't have to be that guy turning the lights on all the time, let's you keep your hands free if you're trying to get things out your bag or get ready in the mirning and the red light means you can lie and read at night without disturbing others.

Nice video. I would stress locking your stuff up. If you hostel long term, you are almost sure to get robbed eventually. And the comment about being tolerant is very important. You are hosteling mainly to save money (most of us) so view it as part of the bargain. So if someone is snoring, deal with it. And book in advance and know when it will be crowded (like major event coming to town) and accept the fact that if you are a long term hosteler, you will occasionally get stuck sleeping in an airport, on a bench, in a hotel, etc.

  • @rtsharlotte

  • @bromarvids5186
    @bromarvids5186 5 лет назад +3

Hmm, I'd say the money clip is way more obvious than you think. If you're just going drinking I just take a few big notes with me and admittedly put them in my boxers.
Mobile phone, deet, tiger balm, padlock (mainly for flights as a deterrent, hate for someone to put drugs in my back arriving in Bali with capital punishment). Torch, good adapter, cheap ones will break, sun cream, I personally upload important details, including bank, passport, card pictures, visas into a cryptic online HDD, if you lose everything, at least you can use your card details to book a flight if necessary and show your info to a local embassy. Never leave more than you need in your checking account, transfer money accordingly online. Thing I used more than anything - probs some flip flops (thongs).

I would recommend bringing your passport even in you are traveling within your home country. A lot of hostels either prefer or require a passport to stay there. This isn't true at ALL hostels, but i've stayed at a couple in New York City and they required passports from all guests even though i'm a US citizen and had a drivers license. It's better to have it just in case.

Rebecca McCarty have you found any cheap hostels in the USA? I wanted to try some before going to Europe and looked in chicago, Atlanta didn't even have one, and the Chicago hostels when I looked were higher that cheap hotel rooms. I might have searched wrong, or the cheap ones might have been sold out.

Ztez Maxim Hi there! When I look for hostels, I usually use the Hostel World app and I have found some nice places at very reasonable prices. I don't know what your travel dates are, but I looked up Chicago and found hostels in the $40-50 range. I didn't find any in Atlanta either. I have only stayed in hostels in NYC other than Europe. If you are interested in new york, I recommend either HI NYC Hostel which is in the $50-60 range OR Chelsea International Hostel which may be a bit cheaper depending on when you go. For Manhattan...those hostels are a steal!

Just be careful with nilodor it is not one of those more is better products. Start with one SMALL drop then wait 5 minutes. Because when you over use it that stuff stinks and nothing gets rid of the smell

I'm glad I never did hostels when I was younger, sounds like there are no ground rules, people are selfish and rude just because others are willing to accept it. Doesn't sound like fun to me.

      Name 10 things
I aggree that some of that stuff is not necessary, but as everything he names is rather small I am fine with it
