The more I learn about Roger Waters and the more I listen to him, I find myself more and more impressed with him all the time. He's brilliant, well-spoken, and involved.
Dennis Anthonis I agree with you. Plus he and Syd were really very very different from each other and all that. I like Roger. I love Syd. (. :
It can take a lifetime to learn about life - I think that has been true with Roger!
I love the whole Pink Floyd Experience from the very beginning to where they are now. Of course I wish they were together still. But everything happens the way it does for a reason. Love the creativity. Just absolutely perfect and the work of a group of amazing geniuses.
I so agree
@@showmoke If you take in the material he created the text he seems very aware and perceptive from an early age , Sometimes people are ahead and get into trouble for it .
loved pink floyd since i was a little kid. In recent years I learned what roger waters is actually like. Its so nice to find out that he never dissapointed me at all
Could listen to Roger all day
You should see David, you'll say Roger who..?
@@shineon808 Roger is definitely more thoughtful and well spoken than David.
@@shineon808 Dave fantastic guitarist nice guy but pretty superficial,,
@@kevanbodsworth9868 He may have other interests. He auctioned his guitars for world records. He's planning on using the millions of dollars to help combat climate change.
@@kevanbodsworth9868 I wouldn't say superficial, it's just that Roger is sooo deep that it's really hard to compete
I have followed him since the early 60s he has always been a brilliant man i love his ways how he speaks sings plays his guitar. I love him period.
He is such an intelligent guy. I am amzed to hear anything he says. He is polite, low profile and very emotional. We are luThe human condition is really something intriguing because we can´t get rid of old vices and tendencies no matter how much time has passed we always make the same mistakes....Then we ask: where do we go from here? I am really impressed with him. Very few people have this deep knoledge and understanding about the human being´s thoughts,behaviour....ck to have him around. He is somebody special. His songs talk about the anxieties of the human being in a society that turns us into prisioners of deadlines, money etc.
Do some actual research. Roger is an egomaniacal, greedy, a-hole that very few can deal with. He’s a true liberal as he believes he is always right and to have opposing views makes you wrong.
Roger’s solo music is trash where his small sales are from diehard Floyd fans. There are no Fans of Roger’s solo career which is why he plays the Floyd hits to get ppl to show up. On the flip side, the other 3 members of Floyd actually created some decent tunes post Roger. It drives him crazy.
@@jonathansmith4742 Complete truth. Roger never stops complaining, still bags on the other Floyd guys, and mouths off constantly. I love Pink Floyd, but I can do without Waters. His solo stuff shows that while he is good, he was not everything for Floyd. He needs them more than they needed him.
@@craigmeiners6262 Wrong. Gilmour not only takes far more potshots at him than vice versa, he often hits below the belt. Utterly classless. While I agree that Roger's solo work is not as good as what he did with the Floyd, it is nevertheless considerably better than Gilmour's work with the ersatz "Pink Floyd," and the critics agree. Therefore they needed him more than he needed them. Most everything original Gilmour has done since Roger left has been quite bad and mediocre at best. If he didn't constantly re-perform the old Floyd stuff (most of which was written by Roger) he would have nothing of interest to offer.
The more that I learn about Roger Waters and his positive insights..
The More I want to listen & to & tune in to Rogers World.
* My Top Respect Always To David Gilmour Pink Floyd.

Eloquent and informative as ever!!! Can’t thank the man enough for his work!!!!🙏🏾
Roger is a great singer and song writer. I love his voice and him as well. I would love hearing
This interview really brings home that if it wasn't for David, we'd almost definitely have gotten to hear more Pink Floyd in one way or another after Live8....
We need another movie Roger
Great enlightened man..right up there with John lennon..Lovely man..hope he keeps going strong..he gets better an better..
He is a gr8 spokesman for the human race..with people like him I'm proud to be a human being..
Listen to him israel
Oh come now. Both were bullies. Just ask Cynthia Lennon.
Yes, I too have felt that he is like John Lennon in his commitment, intelligence, and passion. John, of course, was a much better singer, but Roger more of a bandleader.
Always an amazing looking man

You’ve got to hand it to him - He is a genius! X
Amused to Death is a fantastic album. Jeff Beck on guitar!
Funny, haven’t heard any of them getting airtime. What hits were on that album or any of his solo albums? No David G. means no magic. Even using hired pros to replace David, Richard, and Nick shows that Roger writing the lyrics hardly means he created the Pink Floyd hits. He was but a piece of the puzzle and not the biggest piece.
@@jonathansmith4742 it's a concept album centered around the Gulf War at the time. Not radio appropriate, this is for listening from start to finish with no interruptions.
@@johnmiller9219 the wall is a concept album dealing with the war, drugs, abuse, etc. and it gets plenty of airtime. The reality is the songs simply are not good enough to get played. Roger still doesn’t realize writing lyrics is not as important as writing the music. Without David G. writing those infectious riffs Roger is lost once again.
I completely agree….ATD is my favorite album which includes everything PF did.

awesome man
I hadn't appreciated how much of a passionate, deep thinker this guy is. His views about striving to get humanity to collectively rise above its base nature totally echo my own sentiments - particularly since having kids (The Tide is Turning is one of my favourite songs ever). I have to admit I didn't like The Wall (bit too depressing), but I might need to give it another listen...
Very intelligent and aware ..just love you Roger 💕
I love Rog, I could listen to hom for hours, read what he writes, his lyrics, but can't listen to his solo stuff for more than 10mins (I think is the Bob Dylan influence-half spoken). So I'm not of the camp "Roger, shut up about politics, stick to the music", but rather the opposite! I admire how complimentary Gilmour and Waters are about each other despite all the bad blood. "Comfortably numb" is a fine example of how they complement each other, and Waters has always sought a great guitarist (S.White, Clapton, Beck) to create that sound but even though is great, it's not the same...
Why are so many videos on RUclips doubled up? This makes them
Look twice as long as they really are. I don't see the point.
I think it's for copyright
In spite of the shite interviewer, this was so good that you had to upload it twice! ;)
There are not many rock stars that are this intelligent, eloquent and interesting to listen to. And if I really squeeze my brain hard, I can probably only think of two other people with the same sort of magnetic charisma and laser-sharp intellect (in the music business at least), and that's Frank Zappa and David Bowie.
Being smart and smartly ambitious is looked down upon in today's society.
But surely there must be some creative geniuses out there who won't let that stop them?
+teppolundgren I totally agree with you. ZAPPA< WATERS, BOWIE and how about some BECKER AND FAGAN

I think the Dark side of the moon is a beautiful piece of art, it is amazing..
There's no doubt that it's a masterpiece and will be played in hundreds of years from now just as some of us listen to the classics of the great orchestral composers of the 18th and 19th centuries!
It’s like waiting for the next Star Wars sequel to come out
Glad to see he is so anti-capitalist. We are now on 15 years later and the corrupt elite he talks about are still hugely dominant...but awareness and resistance to that has grown too.
Love them both; but even more together. Way more.

Sorry, I forgot to mention Brian Eno!
21:21 - did this Polish anniversary production of the opera go ahead, does anyone know?

There’s your difference between Gilmour and Waters. Gilmour makes me put on tunes and groove. Waters makes me google Etienne.
Why does 2006 look like 1996?
You could be right but I like what roger said
so we'll spoken excellent command of the English language.
What political commitment. Brilliant
Me too, mate
I grew up seduced by the dreamy guitar playing of Dave Gilmore and because he sang most of the time you could be forgiven for thinking he was Pink Floyd,,as the years have gone by this is a heartfelt apology to Roger Waters .The mans vision, determination and ability to express world and personal problems into music is the very essence of Pink Floyd,Roger is Pink Floyd. As much as I love the classics its his solo music that owns my love for music these days, amused to Death is spell binding.PS Roger,if Dave gilmester. gets sick on tour check out my Comfortably numb solo on my RUclips lol,Respect.
+George Wheelwright lol you think Waters is going to hire you based on you playing one solo completely out of time? You need to relax and stop trying to vibrato like you're shaking from speed and do slow vibrato and focus on your timing.
Similar to me as well. I was in love with Gilmore's guitar playing but then I slowly started listening to the lyrics and I was blown away.
At first I was disgusted (I was listening to "The Wall") and thought they were racist (I couldn't stop listen to it though). After awhile, I really focused and realized what he was saying was satire (towards his fans and racist idiots). I still thought it was disgusting but still, I couldn't stop seeing the beauty of the music and depth of the lyrics.
GILMOUR...it's spelled GILMOUR !!!
@steven Brunton I disagree. Syd lasted a brief moment in the band's stardom. They had to find another way without his input and they could so easily have failed. Imagine if that were the case. No Echoes, Dark Side ...etc
I agree entirely. Whilst Ddave Gilmour has exceptional guitar skills and a wonderful voice, his solo stuff and the new Floyd material is a bit hammy. Although I love Sorrow.
Roger Waters solo albums are my constant and I listen to them in binges. Even 'The Final Cut'. They are so deep and meaningful. His screams you can really get behind too(in my head)!
I recently discovered 'Get Back to Radio' from a B side. It was originally made for Radio Kaos. It is amazing with amazing saxophone from I think Mel Collins. Its available on RUclips.
Roger Waters + Edward Snowden = Real CheGuevara
He was right about the Neocons.

This guy is simply on another level. On a par with the likes of Christopher Hitchens..
Never heard of a french album. WTF. Im lost.
Doesn't the 2000-2010 decade look like the 90-2000 decade now? lol
And I thought he was old in 2006 then I realized he's older now!
I am a Pink Floyd fan, but I never wanted them to get back together again. Moreover I wish "Momentary Lapse of Reason" (What a fitting title!) and "The Division Bell" had never been released under "Pink Floyd" name.
i tend to agree, at that point they would of been better titled Gilmore solo albums with Richard and Nick.
The DIvision Bell is a brilliant Album Dude......- there are millions of bands or artists that would give both their arm to write something that good......- listen to Poles Apart.....absolute masterpiece of a song.....
Waters is a bitter man... Take the Gilmore parts out of his music and you got nothing.... Some of the best guitar solos come from Gilmore.... The number 1 song from The Wall was co- written by both and the guitar solo is rated as one of the best of all time..... Waters needs to get over himself.... He’d be nothing without Gilmore.....NOTHING!!
Yeah, but same applies for The Final Cut.
Gilmour > Waters
What does he say at 5:50 ?? "Because the romans are..."??
I heard: “asked us to do it.”
@@TheWizardOfTheMist thanks
Yeah... I've got the feeling that David Gilmour reluctantly did live AID and I'm quite sure that he hasn't completely forgive Roger Waters... but I could be wrong.

"We must find a more equitable way of sharing wealth"..Says the man worth almost half a billion dollars. I enjoy Roger for the most part, but i can't help but laugh when the ultra rich like him speak about redistribution and capitalism. if you truly believe in equity Roger, then sell your many mansions and assets and distribute your hundreds of millions. Or, to not be a hypocrite on this subject, just accept the fact that you are ultra rich because of capitalism.
I laugh when people like you think that one man giving away all his money would do anything to change the system that impoverishes everyone.
@@Fordnan heh I never stated any opinion on the merits of giving away his money. In fact, capitalism has allowed me personally to be quite wealthy, and I am going to keep as much of it for me and my family as I possible can. For that reason, it would be *ridiculous* for me to attack capitalism. If I did not like capitalism, I would not be such an active participant. Roger is a participant to the extreme, and then he bashes it, because it's sexy to be progressive. For every wide eyed fan who drools on his every word regarding this subject, it's just another record sale or concert ticket for him. Again, I like the man, but on this subject, he's laughably foolish.
@@Fordnan I laugh when ppl like you don’t realize Roger is one of a million Uber wealthy commies that preach their nonsense never actually sacrificing the slightest bit. If every liberal and commie millionaire and billionaire put their $ where their mouths preach then real change would occur. Sadly they will fight tooth and nail to keep every last penny they own. They simply want to tell you where your scraps should go.
What other people referred to as Napoleon
Roger....The spanish were the first that considered that people should have rights instead of the french, while the "english way" was slavery...
The French revolution was also plenty of intolerance and that can not be underestimated.

She was a political prisoner from France during the regime of Ferdinand, and she was beheaded
So, the whole thing was just a promo for his opera.
Roger wrote the lyrics while David wrote the guitar riffs. The fact that Roger takes all the credit is laughable as the riffs make the songs for me. The lyrics hardly matter. Floyd only became global when David joined and brought the final piece of the puzzle. I’m convinced that had David not joined the band they would of never made it past an English novelty underground club band.
After David joined, they produced 6 albums that are worse than Piper (Up till Meddle)
@@Redguard677 sales, reviews, and public sentiment would disagree with you at a rate of a million ppl to every 1 person that agrees with you…. But whatever you need to tell yourself.
David wrote very few "riffs." You seem not to understand what a riff is: namely, a musical phrase of varying length around which the rest of the song is built. Think the Stones "Satisfaction," "Jumping Jack Flash," "Brown Sugar," etc.; or Zeppelin's "Black Dog," or Blind Faith's "Had to Cry Today." The Floyd's music was very seldom built around riffs. David's very important contribution came in providing chordal texturing (especially up to and including Meddle) and very fine, liquid ornamental phrasings. Around that same time, and to a greater degree starting with DSOTM, he also provided powerful variations on the song's main themes and dramatic melodic phrasing at moments of musican tension and/or resolution.
Even David's few compositions before the breakup weren't really riff-based: "Childhood's End," a fine song, is not built around any particular riff but simply follows the chordal pattern. Not even David's post-Roger pseudo-Pink Floyd stuff is created with riffs. You're confusing dramatic solos with "riffs."
"Have a Cigar" is arguably a riff song, but in that case, the riff is Roger's.
Your sense of history is also lacking. The Floyd didn't actually go global until Roger took a firm grip of the reins with DSOTM. "Meddle" was great and the beginning of larger success, not only because Roger's input had increased, but also because, at the same time, they still remained a very balanced unit. Up to that point they were still a sort of (excellent) psychedelic specialty band.
And let me rewrite your final sentence: If Gilmour hadn't replaced Syd in the Floyd, we would never have heard of him. His harmonic range is extremely limited. He's a prisoner of blues pentatonics, and when he does manage to range beyond them he still never ventures past the diatonic scale of the key he's working in. These limitations didn't matter when he had Rick Wright venturing far beyond pentatonics and diatonics, because that freed him up to work on the atmospherics and textures that so distinguished the first phase of his career and were such an important part of the Floyd sound. When Roger's compositions became more pop-rock oriented (starting with Dark Side), the format required more guitar solos from David, which is actually how he came to be known to the broader public. Ultimately, however, this greater foregrounding of his guitar made his strictly musical limitations more evident. But it also made his head swell, after he'd already carved out a niche as the "quiet one" in a band of generally quiet men. And the rest is history
I will add that I am a guitarist myself and lifetime fan of David Gilmour. I'm a mere amateur, but good enough to have played with pros, and I can tell you I have never met a top-notch guitarist who thought very highly of David. I myself loved his work up to and including "Meddle." After that it just becomes formulaic and repetitive. He relies far too often on what I call "slap chords" (where you "slap" the A-shape at various parts on the neck, depending on the key, to give some variation and drama to the chordal and melodic sequence you're playing. I do it all the time myself, but mostly when I don't know what else to when improvising a solo. They can be effective when used sparingly. David uses them far too often for a serious guitarist, lending yet another aspect to Roger's criticism of his laziness. It also demonstrates a lack of musical ideas.
I put David's post-Roger ersatz Floyd on the same level as the reconstituted Moody Blues without Mike Pinder. Just not the same band. And without interest.
If it wasn't for Waters' political views, I might like him as much as the music of Pink Floyd.
Pity, His political views have the most insight and understanding of where we are and the problems we face , Still if you get the music which springs from them you may see the point in the end. .
Don't listen to animals the wall or the final cut then
@@garyhughes7518 Or 'Us and Them'.

i like him more than gilmore
Like Lennon/McCartney needed each other, David Gilmour/Roger Waters needed each other to create a band as huge as Pink Floyd. If Roger were so great, his solo career would have been better than it became in terms of NEW MUSIC. The truth is, his NEW MUSIC wasn't close to the Floyd. The first two Floyd albums with Gilmour at the helm were vastly more successful than any NEW MUSIC that Roger ever wrote as a solo artist. And just plain artistically better. I listen to "Momentary" and "Division Bell" way more than "The pros And Cons." As David said in the "Which One Is Pink" documentary, the Floyd's "lazy" tendency to hand over the lyrical chores to Water deluded fans into believing that he was what Pete Townshend was to The Who. There is a reason why Roger doesn't play fretless bass on "Sheep." It's because he is half the musician that Gilmour is. Gilmour was right in the documentary. His musical influence has just as much if not more to do with the success of the Floyd as Roger did. This is not a band that wrote hit singles. The music played just as much of a factor to the Floyd's success as the lyrical concepts did. Gilmour was largely responsible for that music. Roger is limited musically.
100% agree with your comments.
Waters is recognized around the world as one of the greatest songwriters of all - time.
You have no idea ya muppet
Why were the last 2 pink Floyd albums CRAP if gilmores so great
You really enjoy those two Polly Samson albums? Division and momentary?
You should buy some of her finger paintings too, that are most likely for sale on David Samsons 'Pink Floyd' website.
He mocked Genesis during their Collins heydays on the Stern show years ago; and described how he hates pop music.
Review his comments-he hates everything. Has he ever written one word about Love? Not on the Dark Side of the Moon. And that album is supposed to be about life.
The Dark Side of the Moon is not about life, it’s about losing your sanity. Someone who goes insane probably hasn’t felt much love or affection in their life, which is why they’re going insane in the first place. Also, hating pop music isn’t new, and a lot of musicians (not those who make pop music) hate it anyway, because they think it’s superficial and one-sided.
That’s sounded really pretentious, I’m sorry. I’m just trying to to explain why they hate it.
"Has he ever written one word about Love?"
Your ignorance is showing.
Here you go:
Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand?
And lead you through the land?
And help me understand the best I can?
This is as subtle and heartfelt an evocation of love one's fellow humans as you'll find in a rock lyric.
Syd was fragile. Roger is not.

More of his Marxist drivel...
Waters is probably a decent chap, but making an opera glorifying the French Revolution is akin to making one celebrating the St. Valentines Day Massacre. The French Revolution systematically killed between 30-40,000 people (contrast that with between 3 and 4,000 killed in the dreaded Spanish Inquisition!). The French Revolution had nothing to to with Liberty and everything to do with Tyranny. In fact, it has even been labeled by some political scientists as the world’s first "Totalitarian Revolution," and accordingly, it was greatly admired by the Bolshevicks. The BBC interviewer and Waters appear completely ignorant of all of this. Waters would have done much better to have made an opera about the American Revolution, but I guess that simply was not bloody enough.
Do it yourself!!
The US was not very important at the time of its revolution, & France was the most important country in the world. ( its reversed today) ..More over the in France 1% owned all the country, meaning the peasant were destitute & the road to stability very hard,,,but so was staving to death.... So French revolution was much messier, & constantly faced foreign invasion.. But got to democracy in the end, just in time to lead the democracies against the Kaiser ....
The other thing left unmentioned, as far as I can tell (I haven't finished watching the whole interview yet), is that "Ça ira" was itself a popular song at the time of the Revolution. Edith Piaf covered it way back in the 1940s or 50s. And its lyrics are blood-curdling. The title means, basically, "it's going to be all right," but do you know why it's going to be all right? Because they're going to kill the aristocrats! It's right there in the song. I was shocked the first time I heard this.
I sympathize with Roger's politics, I think they're very important. But I do wonder if he was fully aware of these implications.
Roger comes across as an arrogant guy, hard headed, not able to listen to others point of view, an idealistic guy who has lefty ideas in everything, the environment, etc. As a person I think that he leaves a lot to be desired, as a musician, I think that his input into the group was over rated, then again, we all have different likes and dislikes of people.
Yes - Roger wrote some great lyrics, but that's almost as far as it went with him. Most of the musicality of the band came from David Gilmour and Richard Wright with Nick Mason's drumming fitting in perfectly to what was required.
@@showmoke what a load of bullshit, considering that Roger _musically_ composed the majority of the songs in the 70s, says a lot about Roger's musicianship. "Roger lyric guy, David music music guy" is utter bollocks.
No, it's you, rather, who comes off as arrogant, and ignorant (often a prerequisite for arrogance), thinking your received ideas are of any importance to communicate on the internet.
Boring interview.
That’s because your an uneducated, ignorant waste of skin.
