Started rejecting Rick Wright's ideas on Animals. Reduced David Gilmour to sideman on The Final Cut. Lip syncing in concerts these days, more reason to avoid Roger now!
favorite rock star over 35 years, took me a few more years to acknowledge that yea, Roger is a genius as a musician and Lyricist. He's such a high calabur intellectual. vary well spoken and clear
Huge respect to the man, listened to many interviews with him and he always comes across a very decent human being with empathy for all humans, very bright obviously too.
Amused to death Best album Roger. Ain't it a drag that our generation changed zero. Oh well Other realms await. Hope to see you there. Won't be long now.
Dave Harry not so, it's just that the battle continues. If you look at how far culture has progressed since the '50s... I don't think anybody would say there has been no impact. But sure, the job isn't finished, and the big brother agenda is gaining ground today.
Man, I would love to hear a conversation between Roger and Neil DeGrasse Tyson or maybe Joe Rogan and Roger Waters. Those would be some awesome conversations.
Once the slightly awkward culture clash settles down, this interview becomes as engrossing as a really good book. (Even my restless kitten settled down to listen to Roger reading his poem, soothed by the 'doggerel' perhaps).
I mourn for any extra verses, different versions and songs we won't hear on this version of the album, and possibly never hear, though we eventually got some extras on The Final Cut, KAOS, and later versions of The Wall. Roger apparently accepted some recommendation to keep the album below 60 minutes. This must have been the problem with Ummagumma (86 mins), The Wall (80 mins), subsequent Wall's (over 100 mins), Amused to Death (72 mins), Flickering Flame (73 mins), and In The Flesh (147 mins), so people didn't buy them. Oh, wait, they mostly sold extremely well, and are all unforgettable,l very highly rated classics. Please comment if you didn't buy any of these because they were too long, or if you didn't listen enough times to know them, or if like myself, you'd pay double for a copy with an extra song or a couple of extra verses. To us, virtually all Roger Water's extraordinary creations are like little nuggets of gold, or perfectly polished diamonds. Thank you sir, thricely, and for myself I can barely wait for the next album and/or trickle of unreleased versions, verses and songs.
Amazing stories. Most things I never knew. learnt a lot about his discord with Gilmour and Richard Wright. I can't seem to find who posted this? Thank you
Roger could be sunning his ass in L.A. but he doesn't he speaks out against cruelty and greed, Well Done, We really should not criticise him for his old feuds with Gilmour, PINK FLOYD survived so much, Well Done Lads!!
Brilliant interview. So interesting to hear (27 minutes onwards) how the insecurities of genuinely talented people in Pink Floyd caused them to behave so poorly towards each other. It’s a pity they all weren’t mature enough at that time to recognise and support each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Roger did the right thing in leaving. It allowed him to grow.
I agree. Except that he is a pedantic ego maniac. Pink Floyd was four people. However, Waters seems to think that it started and stopped with him. The sum is always greater than the parts. The proof is in the pudding of their respective solo projects. He seems like a curmudgeon who can't get beyond himself. Brilliant? No question. He ruins it with his pontificating and self-ritgheous drivel. The best part is his criticism of the wealthy.
His reputation exceeds him. PF would have gone in a totally different direction with him as their de facto leader imo. It's easy to try to extrapolate and say that Syd would have seen them reach epic heights. That's typically the case with talented people. Once they pass away, or fall off the scene there are all sorts of theories about what they could have accomplished. Their sound post SB can never be replicated. Their sound with him was unique, but amazing? No.
all those crises roger has been talking about during all these years, we as a nation do feel the fear of confrontations which is inevitable living around the Middle East
From what I can gather, I am not at all eye to eye with Roger Waters’ political worldview. One thing though that he alludes to that we all should try to understand: A system is what it produces, not what he or I says it is.
Yes I remember it well how Roger learned at 18 to dedicate his life for the poor and not his own fame and fortune........Such a big heart he had when he sacrificed for the greater good of the poor while instead he could have, I don't know, worked on projects of self aggrandizement.........
Some kid stole my shoes on the beach in Ko Samui in 1984, never got them back. Walked barefoot with a backpack through Thailand till I got a pair of flip flops in Bangkok. Bloody feet.
To you pricks who thought Roger was always political. Nothing could be further from the truth! All pre-DSotM lyrics were either philosophical or make up your mind (only Corporal Clegg and Free Four mentioned war) Dark Side of the Moon was about all aspects of humanity and the day in the life of a person with various emotions. Wish You Were Here was about absence/madness of Syd Barrett (title cut and Shine On) and the greed of the entertainment business (Machine and Cigar) Animals was a commentary on THREE TYPES OF HUMANS. Dogs were the tycoons. Pigs the world leaders (the first two were make up your mind and last was Mary Whitehouse which Americans never heard of) and Sheep was WE THE PEOPLE! The Wall was part Roger/part Syd/part any rock star. Only Vera and Bring the Boys was political, the rest was not. The Final Cut WAS POLITICAL AND PURE 1982-83. Pros and Cons was not political (my favorite Roger album plus Eric Clapton kicked ass on it) Virgos tend to fail at marriage. Roger and Tommy Shaw both had many failed marriages. Both are dictators (Tommy is Napoleon and Roger is Hitler), both ruining legacies of their old bands. Neil Peart I give a pass because his first wife died and his first daughter died and has a heart unlike Waters and Shaw.
I'm curious at to your thoughts on Amused to Death. Pros and Cons is an interesting album in that it's essentially the only mostly-non-political thing Roger has done post-The Wall. Also, I have no idea what that virgos nonsense is all about. Strange of you to bring that up.
If Roger feels so much compassion for the downtrodden, why doesn't he tear down his "wall" and let some of "them" live in is gated mansion(s). I won't ever deny his talent as a songwriter and musician, but he has got to get down off of his soapbox and quit preaching. He couldn't bear to live one day of his life like one of "us". Wanna know why Gilmour never wanted to do a Floyd reunion? Imagine spending any time in his company for a prolonged time. He is a dime store dictator. Hey Rog, wanna impress me? Go down to Venezuela (with Sean Penn) and tell Maduro how to fix it. I'll sign over my 401K to you. He's a limousine liberal. Nothing more. I don't agree with Gilmour's politics, but at least he puts his money where his mouth is and then a lot more. 25 or so years ago Neil Young wrote a beautiful, rambling, 18 minute song called Ordinary People. When Someone asked David Briggs (Neil's producer) what he thought of the song. He said, "Neil doesn't know a fucking thing about ordinary people". That quote runs through my mind concerning Waters these days.
Stormbringer Coming, Nice sufficiently Aryan Nations sounding name. What is it with you guys and storms and storm fronts? Are you all coming from the land of ice and snow and the midnight sun where the hot springs blow? If everyone were required to be completely morally pure before they were allowed to talk about doing the right thing, we'd all just degenerate into the kind of dog-eat-dog right wing slime you celebrate. Have a good life.
John Downs I'm trying. Stormbringer Coming is a Deep Purple song. No politics involved. Funny, I'm only asking RW to put his money where his mouth is. The whole "aryan" thing? I've been in and lived in neighborhoods where whitey wasn't welcomed. The only time where skin color became an issue, was when I was around uneducated assholes of all colors.
Because he is not dumb, he would go bankrupt soon if he filled his mansion with homeless, ludicrous to imply you need to give all yours away and open your house or you are unfit to criticize, argument for fools.
@@ColinMcDonaldGrant it does when the solution is wipe Israel off the map. Other nations treat their people in similar or worse ways and no one is trying to renounce their right to exist.
I wish roger would go back to the WYWH era when he was part of a team, i think he was the geni ous behind Floyd as Jerry Garcia was with the dead but unlike jerry Roger had an enormous ego, and again unlike jerry wanted to be known as #1. Ok sometimes genious's are a little fucked up upstairs and thats ok, floyd was so great whatever, however unlike jerry again sticks his nose into politics and American politics as well. I don't give a shit what he thinks about trump just play tunes and make everyone happy, play some floyd tunes or run for office and change things either that or shut the fuck up and just play. In an ironic twist Animals is by far my fav LP, influenced my life since '77, just a masterpiece and was the start of Roger taking complete control, so go figure,
Pink Floyd was always a political band? If you like anything from dark side to final cut, you like his political music. Music is political regardless of bringing up actual politics.
I think Roger did some of his best work as a solo artist. I would rather listen to Amused to Death than most of the Floyd catalogue. Also it's spelt "genius"
Eric H Sooooo.... Animals is your favorite album, but Roger should stay out of politics... You either have never heard the lyrics, or you are a special kind of moron. Perhaps both?
politics have been a part of rock and roll since the beginning. And I hate how people ignore the sixties like it never happened. WTF is wrong with these people? I listen to a few right wing rockers and i just enjoy the music, they have the right to say what they want to say, and even if im on the left myself, i give them that right, so should people with Roger.
one of the best and intelligent artist of all time
Whether you agree with his politics or outlook, Roger has heart, like few others in the Rock biz.
Yes, that's why he treated his fellow band members like dirt during the recording of "The Wall" and "The Final Cu(n)t". Because he has heart! *puke*
a little jealousy there by the sound of it,
Nic Penrake...Yeah the trouble is it's Hitler's Heart....bout the size of a golf ball.
"it's Hitler's Heart" That's preposterous and unfeeling; it seems your heart ain't doin' too great itself.

Roger really opened up to this guy - probably the best interview of Roger I have ever heard.
The Pen is Mightier Than The Sword!
... but not if people can't comprehend what they read.
Saw Roger a couple days ago, great of course, anyway, love your comment, will definitely use it in the future , and it's the sad truth, peace
Wow ! very will composed !

Love how matter of fact Roger remains even while his interviewer tries to hype it up all the way through.

Man, I would love to hear a conversation between Roger and Neil DeGrasse Tyson or maybe Joe Rogan and Roger Waters. Those would be some awesome conversations.
i would pay for tickets to that
maybe it would have been nice to hear a one hour interview with Joan Rivers interviewing Roger.
Once the slightly awkward culture clash settles down, this interview becomes as engrossing as a really good book. (Even my restless kitten settled down to listen to Roger reading his poem, soothed by the 'doggerel' perhaps).
