Oh my gosh! Cassie's comment of how, when they visit family, they visit your home LAST because it's the place that's calm where they can relax and decompress?! That choked me up! What a wonderful compliment for your children (daughter-in-laws included!!) to give you! I'm proud of you for your hard work and grateful for your kids for noticing! ❤

This video reveals the temple of love and affection cultivated over years of steady attention, affection, and respect that each one of these children is their own person. Theyre each special and different. Whatta mom!

I truly believe that your kiddos were not bothered by the excess "stuff" growing up because it didn't affect the way you loved them. They clearly had a wonderful upbringing and have so much love for you. ❤

This is so interesting Rachel. Different kids, different outlooks, different way of living now. I love that they were so open in saying that they did not always like the giving up, but now in retrospect they do not miss anything. Hurts for a bit for all of us, but no regrets later.

I could sob in the fetal position for an hour thinking about what this minimal community on RUclips has done for me and my family 😭😭😭 luckily I found you all when my youngest was 2 and oldest was 8. This was an interesting video, talking with the oldest of your children. It is nice to see there is grace shown when we as parents might not do everything "perfectly." You allowed them space to talk and express themselves in the video and at home, and that makes a huge difference. You are well loved. Such nice boys!

My parents didn‘t have a lot of money when my siblings and I were little. We had few toys or books and most of „our things“ were borrowed from our extended family. We were not allowed to watch much TV, so we didn't know (for the most part) what we were "missing". Looking back I remember being jealous of the amount of time my classmates parents were spending with their kids playing or doing crafts ... my parents worked a lot and when we children were spending time with them it was hardly ever doing something for leisure (instead we helped our parents with their work). Now that I have children of my own I try to do things differently then my parents did and prioritize having time with my kids. By the way: My parents are retired and enjoy playing with their grandchildren. Mom regrets not having had enough time for us children, when we were young.

Their personalities just make you wanna hang out with them. I know you must be very proud! And I really love hearing all of their personal opinions about your family's messy to minimal journey. Thank you for being so open and letting us hear how they feel! I started with minimalism when our kids were 18 and 22. I wonder if I'm brave enough to ask them these questions. And if I'm humble enough to let them speak their minds without interrupting! Thanks again for sharing! This time, I'll try to FINISH the video before I make any more comments! 🤣

That was fun! Great video. I really enjoyed seeing the different living spaces. I'm the middle of three brothers and I live in a small studio apartment. I'm happy to say that after years of stress and actual mental conflict about the number of books I have versus wanting more space I have finally started removing books. I probably more than 2,000 books. I'd like to remove around 1,000. So far 166 have been removed and a lot more are stacked up to be taken to different places. (No car so it's a few at a time.) Many of my books I got for free from Free Day at fundraising sales, or Little Free Libraries, etc. I've been thinking about, "How much can I expect to read in the remainder of my lifespan?", "Would I pay to have a copy of this book?" , "Is this a book I truly want to read or does it just look interesting and I got it on Free Day at the library clearance sale?" Once books are read most will be donated so there will be more downsizing. Since most of my books have been in boxes along the wall and around furniture there's re-arranging and re-packing a decreasing amount of boxes. Once I'm done I may start the whole process over for more "thinning of the herd". I was not brought up with minimalism though we didn't have much. A type of stress I've had for years is now steadily decreasing. Books no longer control me, I control them and are getting them to other people to enjoy.

When I was a kid I was very messy. My mom would come into my room and just start throwing stuff away I would cry and wish I was dead. I would grab stuff off the floor as she was sweeping she would make me throw it away. But as soon as my room was clean I could never remember a single thing she threw away. But I would always feel happy and relieved to have a nice clean living space. As an adult in my early 18-25ish I was extremely germaphobic it was hard to clean I needed a certain rag and blabla and I also had more fears. Now in my late 20s I enjoy cleaning but my house can still get messy and the problem I face now. I have kids who are extremely messy I find myself having meltdown at watching my clean house get destroyed.

Gosh, your son's are all handsome. And so different.
I really needed to see this. Being quite hard on myself for the clutter and worry it is affecting my kids. But your boys made me feel good. My kids drag their heels at decluttering because it probably only matters right now to me. Not them! And our house is probably as messy as anyone's with a house full of love.
My takeaway from this is its ok to be messy and it's ok to be minimilist in regards to raising kids. Pluses and minuses with both lifestyles for kids. Not going to do them any harm. Phew. What a relief!
But for a mum's wellbeing, minimilism is definitely the goal.
    Thankyou Rachel.

They didn't notice that the house was messy and the only thing they can't believe is that the younger kids have had lunchables. I'd say that's a win for you as a mom!! I should really do the same with my children, who are all now adults, but the youngest is just out of high school and his brothers are 30 and 34, so there is quite a spread. I go through my children's belongings frequently. I used to do it about every other month and recently I've chosen to do it every Saturday morning. Recently, I not only go through toys, but I'm also beginning to include books and stuffed animals. I only started a few weeks ago, but it makes me feel so secure knowing there is a time in which I'm can declutter. I set a 10 min timer that they can see while we sort. Each time there are things we chose to give away or throw away. Also, when I choose to let them have something that I see as trash, often I will tell them they can have it for a set amount of time (ie, the end of the week) and then when that time comes the item is disposed of. Things like packaging, a broken item, or a catalogue fall in this category. Rarely do I dispose of their things without first informing them. I ask their permission about half the time, and other times I make am executive decision. Today we went through stuffed animals and chose to give away 5. I let each child hug the stuffed animals and wave goodbye to them....I think doing this helps avoid separation anxiety. Also, frequently decluttering helps them better enjoy what they have and helps them see it as something common, so they aren't in shock or great sadness over no longer having something. As way to respect their feelings, I never give away something that I know is dear to them; I never even joke about it.
It was great hearing the perspective of your adult children and seeing your interaction with them. There is clearly love, respect, and admiration there! Hoping I'll have those relationships characteristics with my children when they become adults.

I have come to learn that we as mothers assume that our children are embarrased by their households. But it all boils down to how we assume it is supposed to be to providing a happy and loving home. Because the society that we live in is fast, hard, and lacking family and morals. We as mothers feel that we have to save our childrens world so to speak. But we have to finally realize that we are not meant to keep up with the Jone's. Its not about the possessions, it how you present and use what you have and need to live a happy and enjoyable life together. Be there for them physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
