You mean that tube at the top centre back of the engine. It was one of the engine mountings for the original swing axle design. When they moved onto independent suspension they left the tube on the engine but it wasn't connected to anything. I had it on a manual car.
I have always loved the pancake motor. My dad had a VW variant with this wonderful engine and it was absolutely bulletproof.
