I think House likes her because she's no nonsense and has the wicked sense of humor he loves. House doesn't tolerate fools. This lady is no fool. Hence the respect.

I think Dr House isn't a real person
House has soft spots for patients that don't hide stuff and are open. His whole "everyone lies" is what drives him crazy. This old lady was always open so he treated her with kindness. Though he couldn't speak, there was an austictic kid that he also showed a lot of compassion to.
I think House actually handles most of his patients in the way that is going to be most effective in getting them the help they need. Sometimes, it is by convincing them in a tactful and respectful manner, other times, the use of sarcasm and shock value are considered more effective. He takes the things that his patients and their families tell him, and turns it so that he can get their issues taken care of in the fastest possible way. He learned that she just wanted to feel good, so that is how he presented the treatment. I think a lot of the 'he has bad bedside manner' is that most people can't handle how blunt he can tend to be, when the situation calls for a firm hand.
I keep saying this, but I really need to re-watch the whole series! I definitely think you're right because he gets the *right* outcome (usually)... I feel like a re-watch of the series would re-frame how I view House's behaviors and actions 😊
While it works for Dr House and for the purpose of the show, this wouldn't sail in real life. Doctors with a "kinder" approach are definitely the standard, why heap more distress on a person who is already likely dealing with a distressing condition. I am certain there are more considerate ways to help patients.
It's also worth noting that he hates liars, and this woman was nothing but truthful with him so he was likely alot more patient
In fairness I think at least some of the time he really just can't be arsed to deal with the next idiot who can't use their inhaler properly...
He had his dark momments but i agree, this was his status quo.
This is one of my favorite episodes in the whole series. If I recall, it's one of the very few times House actually says the name of his patient. The older woman who doesn't want to spend the rest of her life playing canasta is Broadway and TV favorite Shirley Knight. The longer part of the episode is a truly amazing drama of a helicopter mom. Season 1, Episode 8.
I'll say it again - I think I'm going to re-watch the whole series (just for me) and do more reactions to full episodes 😊 If there are any other episodes you want to see reactions to, let me know and I'll put it on my list!!
Regarding House being nice. I think his fundamental character trait is that he hates all the posturing and lies, so he mocks people for them. This woman admitted she had sex and knew what syphilis was, so he spoke to her plainly.
Yes, he's addled by pain pills and neuroses, yes he's an insufferable narcissist, but he really is the smartest person in the room. He's tired of people thinking their stupid little lies will fool him. If they don't lie, he doesn't get mad at them.
The actress who played the neurosyphilis patient, Shirley Knight, died in early 2020 age 83 (She would've turned 84 that year).

Sad that she is no longer with us. 😢 I’ve seen her in some shows. I agree with the doctor, she was great in her role here.
I watched the entire series back then when it first came out. Maybe we Europeans are more used at people being blunt and saying things like they are instead of sugar coating them with a fake grin, a cultural difference between the US and France or Germany e.g. I've learned about since, and he had a Dutch grandmother as we learn at some point. House is actually a nice guy who genuinely cares about people (actions matter more than words). I've read a lot of medical articles for my job (translator) but also out of curiosity, and some of the "zebras" we get to see in the show, as crazy as it seems, have actually happened, they have been mentioned in some articles... So it's also interesting for that, and entertaining at the same time. Maybe I should watch them again.
@Jess The MD - when my mother was a child, she was curious about where her grandparents (my great grandparents - they married in 1919) spent their honeymoon. my great grandmother replied like this old lady in the show "why, in bed dear." lol... mom was in shock cause she never expected "nanny" to say something like that.. lol

I never saw the original run of House (too busy with my business at the time). Recently I started binge watching the episodes. I was pleasantly surprised by them. As I watched this I started wondering how a MD would react to his many adventures and if the medical stuff was that accurate.

The reason House gets snarky with patients is that they are doing stupid things. See the "contraceptive jelly" clinic short. Also, he hates it when people lie to him, not least because it impairs his ability to treat them.
Georgia here, was smart enough to realize that feeling good wasn't normal and talked to him frankly. She could even give a good reason for refusing treatment. Frankly, I think he respects her intelligence.
I suggest you react to the House "bilingual backfire" episode. That one is hysterical. 😂
Shirley Knight (rest in peace) was a class act. She did a wonderful job of the role of Georgia in that episode of House.
House is not a jerk across the board. For more evidence of that, Season 3, Episode 4, Lines in the Sand demonstrates this. Certainly, he'll never be Allison Cameron, but he did mention once in Season 1 episode 9 DNR, "What would you prefer - a doctor who holds your hand while you die or one who ignores you while you get better?" In Lines in the Sand, he figures out what an autistic child, a severely autistic child is trying to communicate, leading to the diagnosis. The ending has meaning to it that is warm and fuzzy without being a trip to Disneyland, and only people who have had that experience (my youngest brother is severely autistic, non verbal, and I would have given anything for him to do what the patient in the episode did for House for me just once) they get it. IYKYK.
I have watched the whole episode, I have the complete series on my iTunes. It is quite a funny episode with the repercussions of the elderly lady's infatuation with House. Especially when Wilson reads aloud the letter. If you know, you know.
I just watched a clip in this one - I need to watch the whole episode 😝 I briefly played with just watching clips and reacting to them, but I definitely realize I miss a lot of context, so, since then I've started watching the whole episode of whatever I'm reacting to! 😊
I think House respects the old lady and that's why he treats her with kindness. The only people House treats with that amiability are the people he respects.
i enjoyed the episode very much, just as I enjoyed that episode of House. His reactions were not his usual irascibility, but he is written as a 3D person. The episode was really very touching.

House can be very respectful when he sees someone simple... someone whos not a hypocrate... kids and most of the eldery people are not like that

There were a couple of House episodes that just tore your heart out. Well, they did me. One was "The Socratic Method" S1 E6 and the other was "Histories" S1 E10. I used to read an MD's review of all the House eps which was online for a while. His main complaint was that hospitals don't run that way -- with MDs doing lab tech tasks and also that the various diseases addressed don't typically present in such dramatic fashion. But House was never intended to be a documentary, was it?

When I was about 10, I stepped on a thorn. It obviously wasn't comfortable, so I pulled it out from the toe. Apparently it went too deep as it looked like the toe was broken, I was then taken to an urgent care center. Where I was diagnosed with blood poisoning, so what do you get with that? A shot and I was asked hip or butt? Being young, elected for the hip probably because of the thought of it being on the butt yet that was a mistake. I'm pretty sure that it would have hurt regardless, can honestly say that shot was not fun at all.
First Dr reaction I have seen where the Dr doesn't end up yelling at poor Hugh. 😅

house generally isn´t an insufferable jerk to patients that actively want treatment, don´t lie about how they got ill or their symptoms and haven´t caused their illnes by stupidity and then lie to him about it. that´s why he´s usually kinder to kids (they are usually innocent) and this lady (she doesn´t try to bs him and is honest about what is "wrong") in those cases house is seen to behave towars patients way kinder than to those that lie to him or try to bs him
House did warn the guy to leave. No one wants to hear about their parent's sex life.

@@JessTheMD What i like is that people tend to freak out about the older people getting a STD which no one should ever get no matter the age but the younger gen don't want to think of the idea of the old people have a little nookie.
There is a 9-1-1 season 3 clip that is on youtube I think you could watch just for fun as it takes place in a older folks home as the man who is being just a normal man has a STD on his groin and it turns out that is it a flesh eating one and it is revealed that he sleep with a lot of the women and so did some other men. The kids just can't believe that there dad has done something like this.
Chicago Med has something like this as well and the younger staff can't get through the idea of the old ladies have sex and such.
I mean come on. Our grandparents were more while than us.
Heck, The people living in the Victorian age of Queen Victoria were really kinky. Heck Queen Victoria and her husband had a special rope of string that either could pull from the bed itself and the door to the bedroom would lock. Nine kids out that yeah they were kinky and had fun.
This is the first video I’ve seen of your channel, and watched all the way through. I saw this House episode during the Covid pandemic 😷 when they had an all day marathon. It was surprising that House had the compassion to explain the seriousness of her condition. I like the way you reacted/reviewed it, and yes House is a jerk most of the time.

House is actually 2 characters. Dr jekyl house is caring and will do anything for a patient even risking his own life or career. Mr. Hyde house is uncarring and will play with patient wellbeing for his own amusement

House is a jerk many times; but there is a general misconception that he is with everyone, no matter the circumstances. And that's generally not true. He mistreats some patients (and people) because he approaches them with the mantra that "everybody lies" and "humans are idiots"; so, when others try to get away with some idiotic behavior or story... he pretty much hammers them down back to reality. But this lady doesn't fall in any of those categories, so House has no real reason to apply his particular way of being to her (to her son... that's another thing). To an extent, when he is not under a lot of emotional or physical stress, he is a honorable person.
I’m definitely seeing that more! There’s something to be said about my memory of House from back when I was watching this show as a kid… I think I’ve commented elsewhere about this, but I definitely feel like I need to re-watch this entire show through my current lens. I imagine it’ll paint House in a different light for me! 😊

@@musical_lolu4811 He was an kind of an asshole way before that. His "dad" abused him and he didn't know why until he figured out at 12 that he wasn't his dad. Military brat, constantly moving around the world. When he saw that this one particular Untouchable in Japan was grudgingly consulted for something others couldn't solve or fix, he realized that if you're smart enough, you can pretty much act how you want.
The leg just cranked that up to 11 and Cuddy let's him get away with it because of her guilt.
can confirm the penicillin shot sucks, everyone gets it when you get your shots when you report for boot camp along with other shots....we called it the peanut butter shot, hurt to sit for like a week

Never really got into House. I watched a number of episodes but with Greys Anatomy and Scrubs and other shows at that time, really couldn’t fit it in.
You going off modern treatments. Had an uncle who got malaria in ww2 he was made healthy enough to live till his 90s but had flareups the more current treatment would have eliminated it.

Some years back I went for a general check up and observational session with a Doctor and when I told him what I had he literally asked to look at my teeth. 😂
I had to explain to him that it was a muscular degenerative condition that effects arms and legs mostly.

You are correct. Tertiary syphilis is not contagious. Syphilis in general still is a communicable disease and does still need to be reported to the health department 😊

No, not necessarily! Penicillin is the most effective, but in penicillin allergic people, there are other options - tetracycline or cephalosporin antibiotics if needed. 😊
Honestly the old lady gives me the creeps. I kinda feel bad for dr House. Personally I wouldn't know what to do in that situation.
I definitely understand that! I think that House understands that she’s not just trying to be creepy and understands it’s her medical condition leading her to behave this way, which helps frame it for him and maybe not feel so “icky” when it’s happening. Yes of course, I’m sure he feels weird, but having the understanding of *why* she’s behaving like that definitely helps make it less gross and creepy 😊 (just my humble opinion)

So this case is almost word for word taken from Dr Oliver Sacks' "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat". The chapter "Cupid's Disease" chronicles the case of 89 year old Natasha K who had worked in a brothel in her youth and contracted syphilis. It remained latent for 70 years before presenting itself. Same story as the episode, she rejected the treatment before Dr Sacks explained the damage had already been done, the treatment would only kill the spirochetes and would leave her with her new disinhibited mentality.

@JessTheMD That book is amazing. I tried (and failed) studying psychology in college, and one of the professors warmly recommended the book to his first year students. It's very accessible, well written, and contains cases that actually happened.
@@JessTheMDyeah, unless the case happens to lead directly into the main case of the episode, pretty much all of House's clinic cases are taken directly from real clinic cases reported by real doctors.
Oliver Sacks was a brilliant clinician. The book "The Man ..." is beautifully written, an expository tour de force.
I think that is the same guy played by Robin Williams in "Awakenings"?
So many amazing stories from that guy.

I'm dealing with an incompetent medical practitioner who in his behavior is one of the nicest, most personable persons I've ever met. But I'd take a curmudgeon genius who fights for his patients over an incompetent, lying, nice guy any day. I don't think it warrants a malpractice suit, but filing complaints with patient advocacy and the state medical board have to be done, while I'm having to deal with my illness. Grrrr.
That Anti-vaxx mom. i thought that House's eyeballs were gonna pop out of his head when that mom said no to vaccines. And all House did was tell her the truth. He will not but up with anyone hurting a baby at all.
House liked Georgia because she knew her symptoms, was honest to a fault, and SO PATIENT with her VERY annoying son. She also complimented him and his effort repeatedly. Honestly, besides the flirting, (which isn’t her fault) and her son - she was a dream patient for a mini-puzzle.
Like a lot of odd conditions in House, this one’s based almost word for word on an Oliver Sacks patient in Cupid’s Disease, one of his short stories in The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.

I feel like the main reason that House doesn't like actually dealing with patients is that they are unreliable. They are unnecessary to the diagnosis, because "everybody lies." You can do the medicine without their nonsense. However, in this episode, the wonderful old woman is completely honest, and her honest answers lead to a quick diagnosis...and her honest reaction to the treatment. A great episode. One of my favorites.
2:38 In-universe (& quite frankly, in real life to, whether or not thats a good thing) the visible limp & cane are probably what allow House to get away with most of his less than pleasant actions.
8:34 House is generally written as respecting those who are honest with both him & themselves, which that lady was, to a fault.
One of my doctors has a very direct and blunt manner in how he speaks to patients. I'll admit that the first time that I saw him, it was shocking and off-putting, but once he explained how he works with patients, I was on board. He says that he's aggressive with new patients so they don't waste his time.
I've referred some friends to him and I explain him beforehand to avoid surprises. While not in diagnostic medicine, my doctor reminds me of House and it's fantastic.
I am a big fan of this show I rematch it every 6 months it seems like and never get tired of watching it! Love that you are defending Dr. House not a lot of people do well because "Everybody Lies" lol. Great reaction Dr.

Can you do a reaction to ER season 12 episodes 4 and 5, specifically the scenes with the patient blaire collins? They bring forward an issue about comatose patients that I don’t think is talked about enough and I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts!

I have enjoyed watching your videos analyzing TV shows with medical insight. I am 42 years old and have decided to take a gamble and make a career change to a job in the medical field. I am enrolled in a local college and taking a human anatomy class now, dipping my toes in the water while still holding my two current jobs. Not sure when to take the full plunge though and completely commit. It's fun when you talk about certain body parts, because of this class, I know what you're talking about. Sorry about getting into more detail than you wished.

According to Dr. Chase "House at 90% is better than all the other doctors in this hospital at 100%" This was in reference to his team thinking he's sick.
Point is he's damn good.
I knew a nurse who worked in a retirement community, she said VD was RAMPANT among the residents. A lot of widows and widowers, don't have to worry about getting pregnant, and with all their health issues a case of the clap was a minor inconvenience in comparison. A shout out to all the raw doggin' seniors!

You have a great point! Certainly could be symptoms of a stroke! Though, I felt like they were harping more on the personality change aspect of what's going on. It's harder to discern in a TV show 😝
House is only rude to people he doesn't respect and like. Which means he both respects and likes her.
He started out his usual rude self, but as he got to know her better, he became more humane.
She left being able to transmit her syphilis sexually decades ago. Definitely not infectious at the neuro stage.

I've had the injection - yeah for some reason the antibiotic is in a thick liquid - thicker than normal so can't be done like a normal jab - so they just pop it in your butt cheeks. Maybe it needs to dissolve slowly in fat, idk, it's a good a place as any.
The injection itself doesn't hurt too much but for a week after, you feel like there's a golf ball inside you and you get a welt about an inch across - it's very painful to sit on.
When you say love and sex are two different things, you are actually wrong. We are supposed to have sex with the people who we love. And anything which doesn’t follow that rule has something wrong in it.
I would argue that not everyone feels that way 😊
How do they treat it in someone allergic to PNC? A giant dose of it would kill me. Just curious.

I've had Penicillin injected when I was a kid, and it was very painful. The leg would even go numb at times for the following few minutes. Horrible experience!
I believe it!!! My patients that have needed it have said it’s quite a painful experience! So sorry you had to deal with that!

I’m so surprised on how real doctors and actors pretending to be doctors remember all these diseases and words. It’s just honestly amazing how they just see “you have a chronic cough and difficulties breathing, wheezy breath. You could have COPD” it’s just, mind boggling to me
