- A very happy birthday to Leslie Fish! (@lesliefish4753)
It has been an honor over the past 12 months to both release an album of covers of Leslie's work and also to help in some small way with the preservation of the immense body of work that Leslie has contributed to Filk, Pagan Music, Topical Songs, Feminism and other genres.
This song is better known for the version by Julia Ecklar, Catherine Cook and Joey Shoji that appeared on Minus Ten and Counting:

Images are all the album covers, not in any particular order. Many available here:

I checked the recording of Leslie made by Speakcarrier (@GhostFox. ) in October last year to confirm that the tune is a mash up of 'Rolling Down to Old Maui' and the hymn, 'Sweet Hope of Glory'.

One of my favorite filk songs. The sea shanty the melody is taken from is a good song as well.
Oh my god your voice is amazing, I’m glad I got recommended your video. I’m looking forward to binge listening to your other songs.
What great job dear Daniel....Bernard
Lovely job, Daniel! I love those harmonies.
You are back online! Congrats on the new mega-album. We were speculating here about whether this song was inspired by something you had read in fiction or science.
Outstanding Rendition of this song. thank you.
o
Thanks for listening Douglas!
This is really cool! I just found your channel from the No Quarter video, and I’m really enjoying your work.
Thanks! Has been great to discover the filk community.
Sounds great Daniel. Are you using a reverb peddle, or adding it in post?
Hi Mark, I record the tracks clean and then mess with EQ/Reverb/Pan etc. in post.
That voice... Did you even use any instruments? It seems your voice is the only thing I hear, even if it is with effects.
Also, very nice metaphor for Leslie Fish and, I'd argue, Filk in general. It's the stories in Filk that I've drawn much of my life lessons from. Filk is a fleet of lightships and Leslie one of the best ships in the fleet
Just voice on this one. I still don’t understand the practical concept that the song is describing. My guess is some orbital sun reflectors that power flower shaped solar panels on earth, removing our ‘no sun during the night’ problem and solving global clean energy. As long as the orbital concentrators/reflectors create a coherent beam and point at spots away from cities, it wouldn’t even interfere with our day/night cycle. I don’t know if Leslie got the idea from a book, or if it was just made up.
@@DanielKellyFolkMusicSolar cells converting light to electricity, and beaming it down to Earth as microwaves. Real thing. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-based_solar_power
Thanks Steve, I did a quick google when I finished the recording, and the thumbnail is an image from one of those ventures. Thanks for the link!
Hey thank you for this incredible cover, your voice is fantastic! I would love to see more filk covers, do you have any more planned?
Also yes, you're spot on! The general idea is that by moving industry and power off of the planet, it leaves the whole of Earth to be cleaned up to become a sort of planetary parkland. I don't thiiiiink it's from a book, but I'm not certain! It's definitely a (niche) trope in science fiction I've seen!
@@DanielKellyFolkMusicI see! That is pretty interesting. And only voice... that is some great singing haha.
Honestly, I actually meant it as a metaphor for Leslie's birthday, saying Filk and Leslie in particular have taught me much about life. She shining knowledge on me as a light ship.
Though I admit, my metaphors are sometimes hard to follow for others haha.
