Model Railroading and Hobby Shop Tour - What Will We Find?

- For many years I've been going to this small model train shop in Barre Vermont. Although not being the biggest shop, they have a pretty decent selection of model railroading equipment. I ended up finding a couple locomotives which seemed interesting and bought them both.

I’m a huge fan of the C&O! This was a major score for me. I am so jealous but I can’t complain since you were so thoughtful to take us along.
Love that Amtrak unit at the start of this video :)
The Conrail steamer is a fairly rare Mantua offering from around 1977-ish, right after Mantua took back over most of the older items from Tyco. It sort of copies an AHM offering, as both have that Penn Central style lettering.
Your Lionel GP9, those are notorious for brittle plastic truck frames - you go to pop them loose and the tab breaks. If possible I wouldn't even try to open them.
I did the same thing a couple months ago, I went through an antique mall near Canandaigua NY. Lots of trains, some bargains, some hilariously overpriced. I did find one bargain on a Gilbert HO car.
love the paint schemes for both locomotives.
I bought a F unit Chessie system locomotive by Tyco in 1977 for 14.00 U S dollars brand new. I ran it til it wore out. I kept the shell. Recently I went to a Local Train show and bought an Athearn blue box F unit. I was able to put the Chessie shell on it. Love how it looks. One of my favorite locomotives now. Love the show. Thanks so much.
Chessie System did have one, and only one locomotive in the all gold paint scheme. It was GP40-2 GM-50 numbered GM-50 to commemorate General Motors 50th Anniversary. The GP-7s snd GP-9s of Baltimore & Ohio and Chesapeake & Ohio wore enchantment blue with imitation gold ( yellow ) lettering or full Chessie System colors. If not for the very heavy support from Cheese System in 1972 the EMD GP40 -2 would have been a relatively poor selling diesel model.
Ello SMT glad too see a new video I love your videos on train shopping keep up the good work and model railroading
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed your trip, Harrison, and great to see that your hobby shop visit included two interesting locomotives for future repair videos. Given that four of our train club members have caught Covid, looks like any new videos you post will be my train fix for this week.
the pacing shot of the Amtrak alone is worth a thumbs-up!
That looks like a neat little store! I really like the two locomotives that you ended up getting. I also hope you enjoyed your trip to the states! I also wanted to let you know that the transformers boxcar is ready to be picked up at the post office. I am hoping it made it all intact!
Why that was a nice store, and have a nice day my friend!
Thank you!
@@SMTMainline your welcome ;D
Awesome tour & haul video 🚅🚅
Great stuff at the stores. There was beautiful grey rolling stock wagon with Cannon on it, looked pretty awesome. Best of luck with 2 new projects in Hand.. Take care.
I really love watching your videos.
Very nice locomotive 🚂👍
Nice shot in the intro
Thanks
Cool vintage shop have a nice trip
You will get them running good
Very nice post. Barre, VT, looks like a really nice New England town, and the store looked very cool.
It's a beautiful town.
Looking forward to you working on both engines. I am sure the "Harrison Touch" will prevail. 💕😊💕
Thanks, hopefully so.
Nice little store and a nice little haul!
I've actually got that TYCO PRR searchlight caboose you showed in the case, and I'm currently working on designing a LEGO trains MOC based on it.
Hello from Kentucky! Last year my Son bought a hoard house to clean, remodel and rent!. In the basement upon a top shelf I found the unopened Lionel HO set with the gold Chessie Locomotive. Full set with track, transformer, accessories and rolling stock and a Crane. My intention is to build a small layout for my Grandson aptly named Harrison. My older brother's layout and paint scheme became the Paducah and Louisville Railroad in real life! Featured years ago in Trains Magazine! Love your skills, knowledge and videos! Thanks!
They can be decent train sets, I hope you're successful with building a small layout out of one. I'm sure it would make for some good memories
I’m looking forward to the Lionel engine repair. I have the same one and I haven’t run it in years. I’ll wait to see what your expert advice is on the solution and then I will follow your lead. Thank you.
Good video
I have the Lionel GM50 from the MPC era. Great looking locomotive.
I like the beginning of you racing Amtrak P42 #111
That was a fun part of the trip.
@@SMTMainline I can imagine!
that Baby Ruth boxcar was Tyco's answer to the AHM Burlington gondola steam chuff car.
the GP was a fantasy livery based off Chessie Systems #GM50, a GP40 with that one off gold paint job as IIRC that locomotive was scheduled to roll out completed on EMD's 50th anniversary.
I have about 50 engines in wall cabinets on display. Love to put you up for a week or two and have a workathon. And I have two nice hobby shops near by to visit. Rich
That Conrail steam engine is VERY rare
Yes it was
I know you will get both of the engines running. I like the Lionel too,it is pretty cool.
Thanks, hopefully I can.
First thing I did to my TYCO Chessie F9A was swap some black bogie frames onto it from a Santa Fe F9A. The grey bogie frames got a coat of Testors rubbing metallizer before I put them on the Santa Fe loco. Made both locos look a lot more like the real thing.
Nice one!
Chasing the Vermonter probably made it a good trip as well!
It sure did
0:41 I honestly like the Lionel g scale Thomas stuff, and the fact this store is selling James, and a troublesome truck along with a few other items is strange, but makes me kinda wanna buy them.
Next time you're in the states you should make your way down to Jefferson, TX. They have a small hobby shop, and small train ride.
I would but Texas is kinda far from Maine lol
That's good glad you enjoyed your little vacation in the states. The only bad part it's muggy hot and humid. Interesting locomotive for the Lionel C&O . I would think the drive shaft system if that's what it has to drive the front and rear wheels is slipping, kind of like one of my Bachmann F T units
It was warm the entire time lol.
Nice haul friend and a pretty interesting store here in Vermont. Btw I see alittle bit of g scale as well. Those chessie engines are sure are a treat to see.
I think the "James" was?
@@SMTMainline yeah it was as i saw it
I just won some trains on Ebay from Vermont last night. lol. I think it's most of an old Tyco set with one of those old Chessie System 4-6-2's. Looks like it's in fairly decent shape, but I'm sure it will need taken apart and cleaned up for good measure. Nice scores you got there. I was a kid in West Virginia in the 80's, so the Chessie System always has a special place for me. Lol
That's awesome.
Yarmouth, Maine has a good model train shop, Maine Model Works. Since you're in the area! New and used. I sold a lot of my trains to them, so I know there's some good used stuff there.
I've been there before, there's a video on it somewhere. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to make it there this time.
Now that’s where my next location is.
nice amtrak chase lol
Thanks
Looking forward to seeing the drive train system Lionel used for that eras dabbling in HO.
I've worked on a few before. The older 70s style is original and not too bad but their later one is almost identical to Bachmann's.
Never thought I'd see bandai kits in Vermont. Hg blazing gundam, gp02 rase-two-ten. , hg Kenbu, and alteisen.
Nice smt mainline I find it interesting that you found that golden chessie system locomotive cause I think I one of your videos of visiting an antique store you found a box of rolling stock and a locomotive which might be the same engine I could be wrong tho but otherwise great engines
Love the chessie geep
Holy crap! I’m on vacation in Vermont right now!
Maybe you should stop there
Hey you were in Vermont, chasing the Vermonter, there's some good train stores in mass and Connecticut
Looking forward to the golden boys repair video.
It should be interesting.
Very nice video smt
Thanks
YOU VISITED BARRE AND I MISSED YOU NOOOIIOI. But you've showed I need to check out that shop I've never been in cause I didn't know they had this much modeling stuff
First time I've been to the town in around five years
@@SMTMainline just went there today and turns out he's retiring in October unfortunately. He did tell me to say thx for the shout out on YT though
Those prices are high. I sell my box cars for $6-$9. That includes accurail, mckeen, tyco-mantua, athearn etc…….
The motor in that Lionel is a beast……I had to use dowel rods for the drive shafts…….has a little hop, but that gives it character! Toots……
Déjà vu???
If you ever find yourself in Pennsylvania, you should check out Draude's derailment. It's a pretty neat store. It's a bit of a mess, but there's always good deals to be found!
Well the name fits.
I just looked it up, it looks pretty good.
Yeah, it's a pretty neat store.
The cool thing about the Chessie Geep is that It’s a copy of an Athearn Shell and you can add the handrails and even use the Athearn drive, should you want to upgrade. I bought a dummy Conrail one that was essentially a powered that the motor had been removed.
yes, an HO model of an HO model!
I wasn't aware of that, it's good to know.
Can't wait to see when you take them apart. I don't think I have worked on a Lionel HO engine.
I did but not that one only the one with the bachmann drive and did a little bit of postwar ho which is the Union Pacific porter switcher. I’ll tell you this in 2007 when I was trying to run it it started to smoke really bad I guess there was carbon on the commutator i cleaned that out and it runs perfectly good.
I find the Lionels are usually nice to work on. The later ones are almost exactly like Life/Like Bachmann.
damn u crossed the border jsut to visit the little shop
I was already on a vacation to Maine but the trip to the shop took us off the route.
@@SMTMainline ah gotcha. good call
Those are really cool locos! Chessie system is also my favorite railroad if you couldn’t tell from my profile picture
I like their paint schemes
Hey I’ve seen that unit in the intro, and I’ve also seen the Vermonter, pretty nice, love Vermont and stuff it has, and I’m gonna be getting s Bachmann spectrum Conrail dash 8 from a friends and it’s gonna be Norfolk Southern patched to match a dcc sd40-2 made by intermountain I have, got an o scale model of the gm50 gp7, pretty nice
Where did you see it? Where does the train go?
Glad you made it to Coins & Hobbies. I think they’re the last hobby shop in Vermont, sadly.
I'm kinda surprised they would have one in a town this small.
Man that looks cool I hope I can get the chance to go there some day, if any chance you ever come around the st louis area I should reccomend Rodney's trains and toys, its a small shop but has a ton of used o and ho equipment at decent prices, they also have a small collection of buildings and track excessories aswell as some n scale stuff, the only problem is that its hard to walk around the store because of how closely packed everything is,
I haven't heard of that store before.
Next time you go through Pennsylvania, you could probably spend several days (and a lot of money) checking out the model train stores here.
Absolutely
The Conrail steam locomotive 💀
I think I saw a rail cannon somewhere here: 2:42
Спасибо, было интересно!👍
If you ever make it to Lexington Kentucky you need to check out Berkshire trains they have everything from z scale to g scale
If I ever go to Ohio again I might.
Cool stuff Harrison! Not sure what the issue would be with the Chessie GP9 is either. It almost sounds like it has a partially stripped gear or the tower clips aren't fully seated into place. I have an N scale Con Cor NYC N scale set in which the set's powered Alco PA-1 is suffering from similar issues in which after looking it over, it's gears appear to be damaged hence my suspicion of your locomotive's problem, it's just a guess though.
It might be a slipping gear issue idk.
I'm guessing it's a loose drive shaft.
You know i have never sin that conrail steam train
🤔 😄🤣🤣Harrison that was funny! Your engine doesn't work in the store but runs on your layout well er sort of! Probably needs a tune up. I was concerned don't crank it up or the engine may start smoking & burn the brush motor. In the beginning of this video i noticed an AMTRAK P 42 GENESIS with AMFLEET cars was that The MONTREALER ? 🤔
I'm not sure if that was the montrealer, it's the first time I've seen a passenger train on the line.
I’m shipping you a letter on Wednesday! - edit Thursday.
I will keep an eye out.
Yay, I never get hearted comments from creators! Thanks for responding, it really means a lot!
Sorry I’m sending it by the end of next week, I’m only twelve. 😅
Should have got that Conrail steam they uncommon
I was thinking about it but I'm pretty sure it was $25
Just stopped in there today, Sept 17, 2022, and the owner told me he's sold the building and closing the shop.....now there will be no hobby/model RR shops in Vermont! He hopes to sell down the stock by November, so go check it out...soon!
Sounds like two repair videos to me.
Very well could be
Should have taken the train (Amtrak) to go to a train store to purchase model trains.
belle vidéo
Merci
Let’s see your collection
Cool
Next time you go there pls buy that 4-4-0 for me
Hobby Shop Tour.

Also I got some LOADS for my Flatcars made by Chooch Enterprise I am looking for there mining stuff loads # 7280 that is out Chooch is not making any thing any more they went out. We got a anther kid in are club who is 17 teen .I let him run my DDA40X 6924 unit. some one in the got mad at for letting him run that locomotive that is on video also for you to see. On Saturday 8-13th 4 of us are going to Barstow Yard I am going to go in side of the yard. you got to see that video, Iam a Dumass to in side of that yard
It's kind of you to let them run it.
hold on! was that a box that godzilla on it?!
Wow, what a deal, getting the gold chessie system locomotive for 15 bucks is a steal! Anyways have you received your parcel yet from me yet?
I'm not sure, I few arrived today. I will have to have a look
@@SMTMainline cool
It might have had troubles getting there because I had to make up your last name to send it, as far as border patrol stuff
Price chopper 😄 that's my local grocery store
Must be an American brand, I don't see them in Canada
@@SMTMainline it may even be a regional, New England thing 😁
👍🏽😜👍🏽🇧🇷
O gauge is what I have.
👍🤝
I'm interested in this, Ware is this please?🤨
Do you still do mail in repairs?
I stopped in 2021. I still do them locally however.
@@SMTMainline Oh ok, thank you love the videos!
How much was the Lionel James (Thomas The Tank Engine) SMT?
I didn't check the price on it?
0:01 (Sonic 06 radical train plays) Sonic : Elise's train is- UH OH I GOTTA SPEED UP (plz don't get mad at me that's a bad game but that level was too good and i really like it)
Gotta go fast
The Lionel engine probably has some misaligned gear or something, thats my guess.
Try to get Thomas and friends models there was one G scale model and towards the right bottom
You should have gotten the O gauge rail speeder. And the conrail steam engine.
GM50 was a B&O GP40-2. Not that.
I looked up this Store its permanently closed for some reason I wanted to visit them
That's a shame, hopefully it will come back.
@@SMTMainline I hope it does they had some stuff I wanted
My Bachman centennial has issues
Do you know what kind?
Dcc on board with sound
@@PCrailfan3790 I meant the problems. Like is it shutting off or making a weird noise?
To be fair GM50 is a GP40 not GP9 or something
Pinion gear probably popped off the GP loco.. power torques are the absolute worst design; they're almost always on the workbench.
People ask why I only seem to work on TYCOs, simple answer: They break all the time...
Jills trains
smt catching an amtrak impossible
Im noticing something with younger youtubers. almost none of them are looking into the lens. :(
I'm actually mindful of that but if I'm filming in public I try to avoid getting strangers in the frame out of respect. That's why some of the angles are weird.
