YES! Do a Mexican supermarket version. Just 2 minutes north of the Asian Family Market on Aurora is my go-to Mercado called Plaza Latina. AWESOME bakery and I really like their cheap Al Pastor from the butcher there.
Is that the one in Shoreline? I’ve driven by but never gone in, I should go check it out. Thanks for the tip!
This place is great
agreed!! both of those places are amazing
Yes, please do the Mexican grocery haul!
4:58 My paternal side of the family owned Rose Brand until a few years ago. We used to visit every summer. Last time we went was 2018. My great aunt and uncle used to send packages of fortune cookie rejects and noodles. :-) Fun memories.
Very refreshing to see these videos. A lot of food related content on youtube became very broculturesque over the last years with big dck ingredients, elaborate preparations and questionable star chef attitudes.
Glad to see that people still can buy two plain chicken breast for 5 bucks without feeling existential dread
Agreed! This is a huge problem in the youtube food sphere and i love that kenji's videos stay down-to-earth and acessible.
Does anyone know why the prices are lower at Asian supermarket’s?
I’m liking these grocery haul videos. I get a little self-conscious when buying meat from supermarkets too. Being a truck driver for a meat company would do that. Unhappy animals, it’s difficult not to support industrial meat, it’s everywhere. Would have to go to dedicated butchers with vetted farmers
My fav asian lays chips are the Numb & Spicy Hot Pot ones. basically MSG and Sichuan peppercorn flavour.
FWIW, there is actually a cantonese dish that uses the pith of the pomelo where you braise it (usually in an oyster sauce ish sort of sauce)… It’s delicious and uses the whole fruit!
theres also a vietnamese dessert (che buoi) that uses the pith with coconut milk and mung bean.
More grocery haul videos please! Mexican grocery sounds great, would also be interested in a Costco haul (or whatever wholesale market you go to)
Kenji charmed us with the Food Lab but now he is saving us with the GOOD Lab (doing good by saving us money)
this is the worst youtube comment i have ever read
Looks like you're a member of the RUDE Lab (the lab for rude people)!@@hmmrage
Any chance we might see a dedicated video to veggies/greens from Asia and how they are used in the kitchen?
Yes! Thank you for this. I live 2 blocks from the AFM but I'm usually pretty overwhelmed when I go in so it's good to know more about what's what. I'd love it if you could do more videos from there, exploring more of the Asian foods available.
Also, yes to the Mexican market tour.
Yes, more varieties of Asian food & a big yes to the Mexican as well!
Now that you're doing these grocery videos, I'm gonna make my top video requests - kitchen/fridge organization and cleaning!
2:12 It's a small thing but hearing that you use produce that's been pre-processed in some way is very nice to hear for every day home cooks. I've read insane opinions online about how pretty much every produce is bad unless it has been basically plucked from the ground yourself.
LOVE LOVE LOVE your Asian grocery hauls!
ill be honest, im not a grocery haul type guy. but when kenji does it, then i want to watch
I love these videos! Thank you, Kenji.
I love that kenji listens to his audience and is giving us such fun, informational content 😊
Really enjoying these videos as of late. Please keep posting!
Love these types of videos I learn something every time.
These are all great recommendations. Thank you!
Thank you - I love those type of videos, please do more of them 🥰🥰
Love these supermarket videos, please make more!
Love these videos, please make more! There have been some interesting articles in the past couple of years about the supply chain networks that Asian groceries in the US have developed; I think in a lot of cases they have fewer steps from farm to store, which explains why so much of the produce is fresher *and* cheaper. Always happy to support that!
Loving these market videos. Not only is it great to see the offerings that some of the various cultural markets have to offer, I love the added comments on the specifics of what you look for and why when picking out ingredients. As much as I love to experiment with new ingredients, I'm often ignorant of what to look for in a "quality" or ideal piece, like the ginger your described. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge.
Learned a lot! Especially about the fruits. Thank you!
I really enjoy these videos. It so intriguing to see what a chef will buy and I love the different stores! Thank you 😊
Yesss. It's that time of the week with Papa Kenji.
Great video, thank you. I like this variety of videos- tasting, shopping, cooking, etc. And I do like the new videography with more of a personal look. Thank you.
loving the video as per usual. I'd be super interested to see a video of your kitchen tools. Your kitchen always seems top notch, and I'd love to learn more about some of the tools you use.
Not going to lie, I love these videos. Keep them coming, kenji!
I love this content for reference with my own country! Keep it up!!!
Big fan of these videos as it helps me decide on what’s worth splurging on versus grabbing the cheapest version
i love these grocery hauls! please keep doing them :)
Yes! More please & thank you!
Love this kind of video!!
More of these video types please. I especially like when you tell us the planned uses - I am guilty of buying cool stuff, and not having a clue what I will do with them. Great to see you say that it is OK not to make everything from scratch every day !!
Love these videos. Cheers 🎉
Love this! More please!
Not me spitting out my coffee three seconds into the video.
Not you

Yes to more of these type of videos. My local, United Noodles, has a nice variety of bok choy and cabbage and citrus fruits! Good reminder to head there this week.
Hey Kenji! Thank you as always for your informative content. I was just wondering, one of these days, could you make a video on how you like to store various produce and dry goods. And maybe tips on how to maximize shelf-life. I always feel bad when I throw away a quarter of my haul to negligence haha. Anyways, I hope you have a great rest of your day and thanks for making the world a tastier place.
I second this
I try to avoid plastic in general, but it really come into its own when used to wrap greens for storage. If I buy celery that isn’t covered, I will wrap it in cling film and use over the course of a few weeks rather than have it go floppy within days.
Thanks Kenji! Yes yes yes to more shopping videos. I'd love to see what you get a Mexican food market!
I used to live in the ID when I was a broke teacher and shopped at the old Uwayimaya and the Chinese markets. It was one of the ways we saved money back in the day.
Kenji, these market vids are really valuable because we can't always decipher what the ingredients are (even with google translate it is hard to get a good reading).
The beginning of the video cracked me up! Thanks for keeping things light.
Ha! At the end too.
Our Asian grocery has cabbage superior in price and flavor to everything but homegrown. This taught us to hit the various non-western stores. I am so glad you shared this!
Love these videos! Yes, here for the Mexican and also Japanese grocery hauls too!
definitely like your grocery videos! More!
Yes! Love these videos.☺️
These videos are super helpful. I aspire to do more shopping at different sorts of international markets but any time I try I just get super lost/ overwhelmed.
I live near Asian family market and I really love having access to so many affordable Asian ingredients. I love Uwajimaya but it’s pretty expensive.
Thanks for the tip about rice noodles on Monday, I didn’t know that.
The yakiniku place in the shopping complex is very good for a splurge meal.
thanks kenji!
Any and all grocery hauls, please. Also a big fan of peeking under the over head camera. That might have been my favorite part! 😂❤
AFM is my store of choice. Best prices on so many things - especially produce that is hard to find other places. Our go-to egg has been the Wilcox free range from Costco in the PNW (the ones in the paper carton, not the stupid plastic clamshell - they are like $6 for 24 and always have the rich-colored yolk.
The one thing I wish I could find at our AFM is holy basil.
Holy Basil is more commonly called Tulsi in the US. Check for that.
I like these videos. Keep doing them please
I love going to our local Asian markets. I can find my favorite fresh celantro _with the root_ , I too buy Thai chilies 🌶️ and throw the extras into the freezer along with other hot peppers. They still work well to spice a dish when added frozen. I also buy sauces and welcome your suggestions. I’m still learning about noodles etc., and I’m with you on buying specific meat cuts there and also awesome fresh fish. Cheers!
Kenji it would be cool to see you check out the various products at the Rose Brand retail shop in ID. The old fortune cookie factory space is now an excellent ceramics/art studio next door!
That intro was both startling and amazing.
yes more videos like this please!
I like these shopping videos. 😊
This is cool and I hope you visit groceries from other cultures as well and do hauls.
Thanks for teaching me to be a better cook. Thank you chef
My dad's restaurant used a gallon-sized bottle of pre-peeled garlic. I imagine most restaurants aren't wasting time having a prep cook peel a pound a day, except maybe fine dining.
Count me as another in favor of the grocery haul videos. That and the tour of the store you did a while back. They’re great!
Going to Asian market has been my favorite thing to do ever since I was a child. Especially the seafood section and seeing all the different fresh fish! As an adult I always go for the fresh veggies and hotpot ingredients. Also Dungeness crab when it’s the season. Last year the crab got to 4.99 a pound
Yes, I like these kinds of videos! as far as I'm concerned you could make one every time you food shop!
Hi Kenji. Our family shops at this store all the time. I agree the fresh produce is excellent and very reasonably priced. A place you might find interesting for meat and ESPECIALLY hot sauce is Double DD Meats in Mountlake Terrace a few miles north of the Family Asian Market on Aurora. They have lots of regular cuts of meat and will do special cuts per request. They also have a very eclectic mix of unusual meats in their freezer case. But the star of the show is their collection of hot sauces, other sauces, rubs, marinates, etc. Checking this out alone is worth the trip! Hope you can make it there soon. Btw - what is your secret to keeping your stove top so clean. I've seen zillions of your videos and you, like the rest of us, will spill on you stove top. But the next video and your stove top is absolutely spotless. Products, tools??? Thank you.
Chinese Lays have such a cool range of flavors too. I remember eating a yogurt-flavored (not our yogurt) one when I was there. I think there was also some kind of squid-related one? I'd have to dig up the photos I took.
I'm with the person who mentioned the less than pleasant attitudes of some cooks who make videos. I'm very appreciative of your attitude, your dignified vocabulary, your dedication to your family/pets, your complete lack of pretense, your scientific explanations, and your recommendations ~ in the event I ever get to visit Seattle. At the risk of embarrassing both of us ~ you have alsoturned into some pretty serious eye candy, with a few more years on you. So...... what's not to like, amirite?
I like these videos. I’d love to see how you plan out your meals for the week and then shop for it. The planning part is what prevents me from cooking regularly.
I do the other way around. Shop first plan after 😂
@@JKenjiLopezAlt that’s an enviable skill!
Digging these videos... so i'd definitely love to see a Mexican or any other cuisine market haul!
Man, those braised duck tongue chips are so good. Most of the money i save on produce when I go to an asian grocery store is spent on fun chip flavors and these are some of my favorites.
There were some sour chicken feet ones that were pretty great too. Or Cumin roasted lamb.
Thank you for making not feel guilty for using pre-peeled garlic 🙂
PLEASE do a video showing how you make the ho faan. Especially with those fresh noodles. It’s one of my favourite dishes.
Costco has some nice fruits and vegetables for cheap too! But I love the Asian Family Market. It’s always a bit of a travel from where I live and I always struggle to keep vegetables fresh in the fridge if I am not using them within the week.
😁 Old-world groceries never disappoint! Everyone is getting _octopus ball_ chips in their stocking this year. 🤣
1:48 . Reusable produce / cotton bags yay. ❤ Just gotta flip them inside out after each use to clear the veggie "crumbs", wash (or soak) them with soap at the kitchen sink & dry them every time or every other time cuz the dirt and vegetable juice will soil the bags a little. 😸
Asian Family Market is always my go to for fresh herbs. Can’t beat the price
I'd love to see a grocery store tour video, where you get to talk about all of your shopping strategies at different types of grocery stores.
I'd love to see a series where you use these in your cooking. Then I'd learn how to use them and what to use them in!
Golden Mountain… essential… basically a mild version of Maggi.
MaeKrua is essential too for Thai cooking. Way tastier than LKK premium oyster sauce (and cheaper to boot).
Please do more of these types of video. Also, include what type of dishes you would use the ingredients in. Thanks!
As a kid, pomelo was our snack while watching TV. One of my first knife handling skills was learning how to score the skin to peel it.
I'm liking the goofy Kenji intros.
Yes , Kai lan! My Dad makes pickled pomelo. Best eaten with BBQ meat. Scallion and thai bird chilli is a staple in my kitchen. My daughter loves Hoi Fan, she loves it stir fried with Beef. Enjoy watching this type of video.
Oh dang I love that spot!
These are cool videos hope to see more I'm always intimidated but the amount of unrecognizable items in my Asian market I do like to browse and gamble but sometimes I'd like to know I have at least a few winners this series helps with that
Please share a video of Pad See Ew! I have always wanted to learn the best way to make this!
Hey Kenji! Would love a video on Catonese style Char Siu Pork if you have any advice :)
Cutting board face cam was adorable and hilarious
It would be really cool to see how you approach meal planning. Is that something you do on a weekly basis, daily, etc? Where do you find your inspiration for what to pick? Also ensuring you're getting the right ingredients that complement all your meals and so forth.
I’ve been going to asian grocery markets nearby and they are a lot cheaper than the closest target and my stater bros back in my hometown. The seafood is very generous priced. a small package of octopus was like 1.50 which lasted 2 days and was great.
I want a video of that pomelo shrimp salad!
I liked this. I will watch others if you post them.
Hey Kenji! Thank you for this, so awesome. Do you have any small supermarket recommendations in the ID? There are so many options and haven't explored the grocery around here much beyond Uwajimaya. Used to go to Viet Wah but they're sadly closed.
Nice to see you repping military time/24 hour clock - always what I use 👍⌚️👀
Those beer peach chips are craazy!!! They fizz in your mouth like pop rocks
I've had the peach beer chips. They are very sweet and very hoppy. But weirdest of all, they are fizzy! I think it's the baking soda but the chips are effervescent
"Probably made from unhappy pigs" KENJI LOL
would love a mexican market tour!
Next time you're in the chip aisle at AFM, take a look at the Turtle chips, they're amazing.
