Agreed. He does an excellent job of covering all the bases and explaining it as he goes. Yamaha should use this as their promotional tutorial for this amp he did that good of a job. He's convinced me to buy one...lol
I like the fact that Soren takes the time to explain each of the settings before he goes into his fantastic guitar riffs. He names the artist/group, describes the settings on the amp, then he proceeds to belt out a fantastic version on his guitar. Informative video, Yamaha should include with each THR-10 they sell.
This is a first class demo of the THR10 which inspired me to buy all three versions. Soren Andersen did a great job. It's important to respect everyone's view and how each spends their hard earned cash, but I'd just like to add a few thoughts. I've had electric guitars, amps, and all sorts of equipment over the last thirty years. The THR series amps are a heap of fun and enjoyment. I'm by no means an expert player and probably should be a lot better than I am, but what I found with the THR10 amps, particularly the cream model demo'd here, is that I had to learn how to drive it. Mine started off as a V2 model, but I struggled to get the EQ set correctly, so I was a little disappointed to start off. I changed the software to V1, but still not happy, then changed back to V2. It was only after watching this demo more closely, as well as those from Julian Ward (also very good), that it all clicked into place and I really started to enjoy playing through these amps. These are smokingly great amps. Using Yamaha guitars 502V, 611H (almost exact same tones as the demo, straight from the THR) and Epiphone Les Paul, the range and quality of sound from these amps and guitars is to me outstanding. The trick seems to be mostly in fine tuning the EQ to each guitar and finding the point where each guitar sounds at its best. Sounds obvious, but these amps seem sensitive to this. I found the following settings pretty good - bass @ 3 o'clock, middle @ 12 o'clock (or less), treble @ 1-2 o'clock, and guitar volume around 11-12 o'clock. These will obviously vary for each guitar. Play around with the master and gain settings to suit. The remaining effects settings are as you want them. Highly recommended. Just bear in mind that it may take a short amount time to learn how to get the best out of it. Even the guys in the guitar shops, as helpful as they may be, don't always demo them well. There are many great similar size amps out there, but for the quality and price ($330 in Australia) they are difficult to beat in my opinion. The ability to get such quality sounds at relatively low volumes is fantastic. There are comments regarding speaker size and whether the amp can be connected direct to a speaker cabinet. All fair enough, but it is intended to be a practice amp. When mic'd through a PA or similar it can be used as a live performance amp, as others have already tried successfully. It is easy to think that many RUclips demos of the THR10 use additional equipment and software to enhance the sound, and perhaps some do, but that's until you use one that's set up to suit the guitar with just the THR. Hope this helps.
THR is definitely the winner where practice amps are concerned. My wife bought me the THR5 a year ago. I love it. The amp is very sensitive to input. So, don't expect to get the exact tone Soren did (His mix of humbucker and P90 helped a lot). But different guitars will have their own characteristics when plugged into the THR. Just shows you how fantastic it is. Most cheap practice amps sound the same no matter which guitar you use.
Comparing instruments and amps online doesn't work. I've done that and gone into store intending to buy and walked out empty handed as what sounded great online sounded crap in person.
I've had a Yamaha THR10 for about 4 years. I bought it because I love Yamaha's dedication to excellence. They do not sell any inferior products no matter what the price, so their reputation cannot be questioned. The sounds are fabulous. I recently bought my first bass guitar and there was no need to buy another amp. Not only that, when I brought over to my friend's house to jam, it dropped his jaw! How this little thing shakes the room the way it does is beyond me, but I like it. I had a Carvin Vintage 16 before, but it was way too loud for practicing at home. I rarely got to warm the tubes if you know what I mean. The Yamaha has that "larger than possible" sound for its size. Like a Bose Wave on steroids. I play a Strat, a Sorrento and a Thunderbird bass on the same amp now. Yeah, it looks weird and is small enough to store in your glove box, but it's actually quite heavy and packed with tons of killing attitude.
Found this video last September and it sold me on the THR10. I bought one and absolutely love the little guy! Why didn't someone think of this excellent concept years and years ago? Now if I could only play as well as Soren Anderson!
I have this amp and it enhanced my playing tenfold. This amp is a lot of fun for ideas and matching tones. Just love the phaser and delay effects. The simulated tube feel is nice and warm. Great job Yamaha and Soren your playing is fantastic.
I’ve recently bought a thr10 and it’s great. But I plugged it into my laptop to see what adjustments I could make and the noise gate and compressor make it a fantastic amp. Plus you can adjust everything and save all the settings too. If you have one, make sure you hook it up to your computer. What a difference.
This is By Far the best demonstration of this amp. They should do this video again and put some production value (Money) behind it (two camera's, graphics) I have watched every other youtube video demoing this amp and no one describes or give there setting in order to get they're tone but you. Thanks
@Headwylde The THR in this video was recorded direct from the headphone output to hard disk and just synced to the video - there is no EQ, effects or dynamics processing at all, just some gain adjustments to attempt to keep it level. Of course, the disclaimer is that the sound is part the amp, part the guitar and a big part the player - but this is a genuine, no-tricks audio recording of THR10. I'm really happy with the sound, but there is no post-work to get it like that. - Julian
@@ClearAdventure You wouldn't record into a camera. Headphone out into an audio interface. You can monitor through the speakers hooked up to that interface.
Yeah, it works great. Thanks to the VCM modelling it works and responds much more like a tube amp than most modelling amps - so you can expect a very similar result from FX as to what you'd expect from a tube amp.
This was recorded using THR10 direct to Cubase via USB. The guitar is a Yamaha Pacifica 611. There is no extra processing, so this tone is easily accessible - but of course a big part of the tone is Soren's playing. And for Slash-type tones, THR10X would probably be best.
Just got one of these after watching all the vids on YT. this one is awesome. Also the Philip Sayce one really swung it for me. had it for a few weeks and have to say it is amazing. so much fun to plug in and play at home. Been playing for nearly 30 years, 12 fully pro and this amp has inspired me to play at home again.
I have that same Pacifica 611 guitar and the Duncan P90 and humbucker pickup combo screams through pretty much any amp I put it through! I’m currently playing it through a Roland Micro Cube but the downside is it doesn’t have a mid controller for the EQ. So I’ll definitely be upgrading to the Yamaha THR 30 watt model.
Jesus.I am impressed. The Guns and roses tone was like if Slash was there with his 100 watt Marshall. It really seems Ymaha has done it this time. Thanks Soren.
I just picked up this amp not long ago & honestly, I am floored by the sounds I can get out of it. I haven't tried rolling it with a USB direct imput, but have recorded recently with a mic or two in front of it & it just sounds amazing. I combined this with an old 50's magantone & created a sound that just KILLS.
Went in to buy a Marshall 10 or 12 inch speaker amp.. and the store owner showed me the thr10... Loved the sound. and plus I can put 8 AA batteries and play while outside... awesome amp..
Such a player! Look out this demo could land you a spot in pro band. And what a great demo of the amp too. I bought a different one today. Now thinking of getting this maybe
Great rig for recording or home practice, still usable in "quiet" bar conditions. In real conditions(live or rehearsals), valves and stompboxes are still the way to go. Not to forget: this is sold at a great price !!!
Pacificas are just all around great guitars. Especially the THR10. A humbucker, P-90 and a whammy bar w/coil tap is brilliant. Good color schemes as well on those suckers.
I would bet money (no pun intended) that he was paid. Yamaha would not post a vid on their own channel, using all of their own products, with a guy praising their products and expect someone to do it for free.
Thanks for the tip on cranking up the master! I love this amp, if you are considering this amp, get it. I enjoy it immensely. Buy some kick ass rechargable batteries!!
i keep coming back to this review of the thr. i beleive this is the best presentation of this amp. i am strongly considering purchasing one. thanks for the inspiration.
There's no plan to make a trem version of the 611 at the moment, but it's something that may come at a later date. This guitar is actually just a 510V routed to take the neck P90.
If it helps, my wife picked up the THR5 for me this past XMas. I LOVE IT! I play everything from Blues to Metal and this little box does it all. Pull the trigger, you won't be sorry.
I've been looking for useful demo's of this amp and yours is the best by a long shot - really good demo - I'm sold! Thanks. Never thought I'd want a Pacifica either, but that is one cool guitar. ... and your playing was great as well. Win all round.
I LOVE my THR5! Perfect practice amp. No contest! Yamaha, you made me a believer. Hell, if I end up gigging, I would just run headphone out into a mixer, then through a power amp to monitors. Yes, the tone is that good. In fact, I may do that in my garage... I already have a receiver... Hmmm...
So happy I bought this, It is great. In your bedroom it can get louder than you think, but even at whisper volume it is full and real feeling and sounding. I think if they wanted to they could make a 25 watt combo and compete with 11Rack and Line 6.
I would absolutely love to have these VCM algos in the CL console I'm getting as soon as they hit the market. For work with amateur guitarists it could improve things a lot! But I could also imagine it being used even in some professional settings. Either way, you have to get these tones into a more professional/tour grade version, because the tones are fantastic! They deserve more than being a desktop-thing!
Great sounds and great playing. Please bring those Pacificas to the US, this one is gorgeous! I have four early-90s Pacificas already (512 / 521 / 1221 / 1230S) and they are all killer, but I'd happily add this one to the collection!
@SpreadFL It's actually just a 510V routed to take the neck pickup and with the hardware from a 611HFM dropped in. Customised by Yamaha UK to meet a few artist requests for a 611 with a trem. It means there's also a very cool trans black flame 510H hanging around too...
Sounds fantastic. Just goes to show how someone who understands how amps work can get goes a long way to getting great tones - as well as being a great player, like Soren.
The best I can say is.. it blew me away.. makes me want to play my guitar a lot more again... Went in to buy a big marshall amp. came out with the thr10
tom lindsey indeed..i have mine now for about 6 months, and every day i manage to squeezy some different sounds out of it, and yes, it DOES have that organic connection to the guitar like a tube amp does..it reacts beautifuly to the volume and tone knobs, all the sound modells are very authentic and usable, and unlike other modeling/digital amps out there, the THR actually CAN show you the difference in sound from different guitars..on other modeling amps it makes almost no difference at all if you stick a les paul or a strat to it, it always sounds the same, but the THR really puts the difference out there, its amazing...on the yamaha editor software you even get some more options that are not on the top of the amp itself, like 2 more reverbs (on the amp itself you get spring and hall, on the editor you can also use a room reverb and my favorite: a plate reverb which sounds great), you also get 2 types of compressors, a noise gate, and most importantly: 6 (!) different cabinet simulators: a 2x12 american, a 4x12 american, a 2x12 british, a 4x12 british, a 1x12 and a 4x10..and they change the sound so much that they almost work as different amps, almost like a 5 times 6 amps..
👏Nicely done. Would have liked to see a graphic of the settings you used. Couldn't write them all down as you went along. Dude, you kick ass! But I'm sure you know that. I'm inspired. Rock on!
Great video and great playing. Can we get about the same sounds recorded here from the newly released Yamaha "THR 30 Wireless" if we set up the controls as kindly described in the comments here?
Ok Yamaha, looking for some answers here. In a comment on this video by YamahaTHR, it is stated that the sounds here were recorded via USB. However, there is a post here (www.thefret.net/archive/index.php/t-19927.html) where someone claiming to be from Yamaha says, “I work for Yamaha, so I'm not impartial, but I recorded and edited the Soren Andersen 'getting classic sounds' video and can assure you that there is no post production on the audio at all - the sound is just recorded from the headphone out of the THR10 with no EQ or effects added after.” So which is it, USB or headphone jack??
I'm five years late to this, but it's pretty clear that there is a lead running into the headphone out socket. You can see it behind the guitar lead on the top right of the amp. There could perfectly well be a USB lead running out of the back as well, but I'd tend to believe that this is recorded from the headphone out.
Ive got a THR10 and an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Ive never got close to good crunch or lead tones and Ive concluded its likely to be the pickups which are no where near as punchy as the Gibson ones on their Les Pauls. I suppose you get what you pay for but what might be a good humbucker replacement set I could try to get closer to the Gibson? I thought about a P90 and something else????
is there anything louder for playing now outside on the beach or in a loud city environment? I hear that if you can damage the am if you you crank it up all the way. I just love the fact that it battery operated!
Love the THR amp.. great for home concerts, festivals.. rockin' !! Haven't tried it personally but can't wait... .was thinking on acoustic guitar/mic setup. #yahamathr
0:43 Bluesy Hendrix: clean. master 100%, gain 12 o'clock, e.g. all 12, bit of reverb
1:37 “Clean Megadeth": as above, add chorus
2:14 Stonesy/Sheryl Crow: crunch, full master, eq at 12 o’clock, gain 60%, a little delay/reverb
3:25 Classic rock: lead, full gain, master at 1o’clock, bass, middle 12 o’clock, treble 3 o’clock, a little spring (I added middle and took out bass)
5:31 High gain, Halen, True, ’89: gain 11, master bass middle 1 o’clock, a little delay/reverb
7:35 Modern metal, Maiden riffs: modern
Ya. I also paid attention to his settings and added them to the THR Library! :-)
Matt Gillam... well? Were's the settings?
For those of us who are new to using amps of any kind, what is e.g. all 12?
RoadDawg Blues with the rotary knob at the 12 o’clock position - i.e. the middle of its range.
Where's the early U2 tone set up with delay,…. that's a classic. Come on now.
This is the best THR-10 demo video I have found so far.
Agreed. He does an excellent job of covering all the bases and explaining it as he goes. Yamaha should use this as their promotional tutorial for this amp he did that good of a job. He's convinced me to buy one...lol
Yes I agree; he convinced me to buy one as well.
Yeh ,good job ... gonna plug in to mine asap😀

Got mine today
You really need to hear this live
The hall reverb blew my mind
3D spread is incredible.
Awesome practice amp
didnt think much of the amp but that was the best rendition of little wing ive ever heard anyone play on youtube
This vid has taught me more about my amp than 50other vids combined!
This is the best THR10 demo I have seen. Yamaha should endorse this guy!
Probably the best demo I've seen. Going to look that guitar up. Think I was more impressed with it than the amp. That and the playing.
Just picked up my Thr10 today! Super stoked. This video sold it for me!
gear sounded superb, both the amp and guitar, demoed by a very talented guitar player.
Awesome video! One of the best amp demos on Utube...detailed, easy to follow and backed up with some excellent playing.

Soren always does a fantastic demo!
Nice demo Soren. This is the first time I ever even went to hear one of these THR10 models. Pretty cool and nice playing.
Yes - it has line out either over USB2.0 or via the headphone output. This was recorded from the headphone out.
If it is going headphone out to the camera, how is he hearing it?

I like how he snuck in a little Toto/Steve Lukather for the big 80’s chorus sound. Well done!

PLEASE for those 6-7 good settings, can we get the exact knobs settings? PLEASE
I love that you can use this as your ipod dock (with an aux lead) and as your PC speakers!

+queenforever yeah he really good!
Did I hear a little of Toto's "Till The End" at 6:18? I believe I did. I like this dude.
Good call. They seem to be having a good tour this year in the US

Best tone review on this amp. Nice job. 👍🇦🇺
Great demo. I'm impressed by the diversity.
Wow! What a great demo. Seems like an amazing product. I hope that I find one to plug into and try out for myself.
Best demo of this amp!!
That Megadeth tune is Super convincing how well this amp sounds WOW!!
My woman from Tokyo holy crap that took me by surprise that tone was spot on - that 611 does just about everything - gotta get me one of those.
Whats the name of the song of 1:53?🤟🎸🎸🤟
if his face at 9:12 is anything to go by, the clean and aco settings should be good, or did I miss the megadeth?
For everyone asking about 7:13, It is Guns & Roses 'Welcome to the Jungle' (opening riff).
Blimith Blimey doubt they are guitar players
Who's asking that?
Joe Mama Scroll down. There are several. :) Which surprised me, actually. Hence my post.
Love the tone those pickups sound killer
For all the amps I own this is still one of my faves. 10c. I do wish it had a foot switch controller at least for some of the stuff.
@SpreadFL It's actually just a 510V routed to take the neck pickup and with the hardware from a 611HFM dropped in. Customised by Yamaha UK to meet a few artist requests for a 611 with a trem. It means there's also a very cool trans black flame 510H hanging around too...
Yes, that's the tone. Amazing sound!
Great playing!
Sounds fantastic. Just goes to show how someone who understands how amps work can get goes a long way to getting great tones - as well as being a great player, like Soren.
Just bought the thr10..... and all I can say is WOW,,
does it sound like a real tube??? cause in the video it really sounds like one!!!
The best I can say is.. it blew me away.. makes me want to play my guitar a lot more again... Went in to buy a big marshall amp. came out with the thr10
Also what I really like. I can put in the batteries and carry it outside like it's a small radio. No heavy amp. And I don't need my pedal..
tom lindsey
indeed..i have mine now for about 6 months, and every day i manage to squeezy some different sounds out of it, and yes, it DOES have that organic connection to the guitar like a tube amp does..it reacts beautifuly to the volume and tone knobs, all the sound modells are very authentic and usable, and unlike other modeling/digital amps out there, the THR actually CAN show you the difference in sound from different guitars..on other modeling amps it makes almost no difference at all if you stick a les paul or a strat to it, it always sounds the same, but the THR really puts the difference out there, its amazing...on the yamaha editor software you even get some more options that are not on the top of the amp itself, like 2 more reverbs (on the amp itself you get spring and hall, on the editor you can also use a room reverb and my favorite: a plate reverb which sounds great), you also get 2 types of compressors, a noise gate, and most importantly: 6 (!) different cabinet simulators: a 2x12 american, a 4x12 american, a 2x12 british, a 4x12 british, a 1x12 and a 4x10..and they change the sound so much that they almost work as different amps, almost like a 5 times 6 amps..
Me too and it's fantastic.
👏Nicely done. Would have liked to see a graphic of the settings you used. Couldn't write them all down as you went along. Dude, you kick ass! But I'm sure you know that. I'm inspired. Rock on!
Yep. I agree 100 percent. This amp is a game changer... Chances are, we will see a foot switchable model in the near future.
However, there is a post here (www.thefret.net/archive/index.php/t-19927.html) where someone claiming to be from Yamaha says, “I work for Yamaha, so I'm not impartial, but I recorded and edited the Soren Andersen 'getting classic sounds' video and can assure you that there is no post production on the audio at all - the sound is just recorded from the headphone out of the THR10 with no EQ or effects added after.”
So which is it, USB or headphone jack??
I'm five years late to this, but it's pretty clear that there is a lead running into the headphone out socket. You can see it behind the guitar lead on the top right of the amp. There could perfectly well be a USB lead running out of the back as well, but I'd tend to believe that this is recorded from the headphone out.
Thank you so much to tell me how to set for a Hendrix tone. I have this YAMAHA RHR 10 and it's my best amp EVER
just got mine yesterday, this vid is very helpful in learning how to tweak the amp thx
It's actually a 510V with the hardware from a 611HFM and a neck rout added for the P90. It was done as a custom for Soren before 611V was available...
and what is the song on 2:00?
Don't be so hopefull by the amp. The thing that is really rocking there is Soren Andersen. This guy is amazing. He could sound good with an ukulele.
Eh what a great tone and playing!!! this is the best demo of this guitar i've seen!!!(with the Jackthammarat's playing)
The best vidéo ever made on this amp thanks
Ive got a THR10 and an Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Ive never got close to good crunch or lead tones and Ive concluded its likely to be the pickups which are no where near as punchy as the Gibson ones on their Les Pauls. I suppose you get what you pay for but what might be a good humbucker replacement set I could try to get closer to the Gibson? I thought about a P90 and something else????
Haha! Well played, well played! Much the attitude people need to have in modern times. You will become the recipient of great fortune in your life.
@smpzpirate many thanks for that, it had been driving me nuts all week.. Great riff!
Very nice presentation and thanks for god guitar show!!!
I love mine! Great video. Helps me on getting tones I like.
is there anything louder for playing now outside on the beach or in a loud city environment? I hear that if you can damage the am if you you crank it up all the way. I just love the fact that it battery operated!
Great! Thank you so much!
Man, more videos like this are needed!
Love the THR amp.. great for home concerts, festivals.. rockin' !! Haven't tried it personally but can't wait... .was thinking on acoustic guitar/mic setup. #yahamathr
I just got mine and it is already obvious that this is miles ahead of the Line 6 that I used to own.
Does Yamaha have a patch sharing site?
