    The beautiful thing about "ridiculous" engine displacement is the lower specific output means the engine tends to last longer at a lower price compared to low-displacement, high strung engines. It also gives you somewhere to go if you do want to start moding the thing for more power. Lots easier to make more power out of a lazy 300hp 5.7L then an already knife-edge tunned factory 300hp 2.5L.

    I wish Ford had a better name for their EcoBoost engines. Why I say that, is because there is two things you can only choose to have with them, Eco, or Boost. Not both at the same time.

    • @knote4958
      @knote4958 6 лет назад

      Ford knew most people buying them are not car enthusiasts or automotive-inclined, therefore wouldn't be the wiser. In real-world driving, the 5.0 vehicles get slightly better mileage than the ecoboost, and tend to have fewer issues (stressed engines, i.e. forced induction, almost always face more issues than NA in a given period of time)

      They make good power and even better torque, they're easier and cheaper to modify and work on than modular engines and are physically smaller even though the displacement is higher. While they are a bit archaic, I don't think I'd go so far as to calling them shitty. Also all of the Ford Engines are DOHC sooo..

    • @hank1556
      @hank1556 6 лет назад +3

      another honorable mention: Chrysler 5.7 Hemi. air flow is amazing and they're strong. they handle forced induction very well on stock internals. they are the next LS so to speak and what I mean by that is you can pull a junkyard 5.7 and stick it in something to go fast. they're just still pricey because they're generally newer and not as many made. but 10, 20 years from now as more and more wind up in junkyards, the price will drop and people will see their potential. mark my words!

      It's because they were installing mustang EcoBoost head gaskets on the RS motors, the difference between them being a coolant or oil channel that the mustang has but RS does not. So the spot in the gasket with the hole for that channel was blowing out on the RS as it made a weak spot

    I have an SRT-4 Neon ACR, a Subaru WRX, a '91 Chevy K1500, and an '04 Silverado 2500 with the 6.6l Duramax. By far the most fun car to drive because of the high power-to-weight ratio is the SRT-4 with the other vehicles having their places as well with the trucks being the high torque, knock-you-back-in-your-seat vehicles and the WRX being the best in a corner/winding road.

    Soooo many great engines to choose from! I like that you used a variety if different kinds as well

    • @akio2589
      @akio2589 6 лет назад +2

      When it comes to old iron, it's all in the cam and top end. A good cam can make or break older American V8's. If yours fell on its face after 4500, it's most likely because you had a cam set up to deliver more low end. With good internals and some heavy valve springs, 7k is probably doable in a 440. But honestly, if you want something that revs, Mopar 383 is a better bet. 440 is all bottom and mid range. With the right gear setup and if you can get the power to the road, a 440 will roast a 389 all day long. No replacement for displacement.

    the LT5 was actually part of the Gen2 Small Block Chevy engine family. it's based on the LT4, but heavily built and tuned up.

      @5abivt 6 лет назад

    • @cobaltlukather9045
      @cobaltlukather9045 6 лет назад +1

      I was not talking about the new LT5, but the 1990's one. I was addressing the fact, that it IS considered a small-block Chevy, but of the short-lived Gen 2 small block Chevy engine family, consisting of the L99, LT1, LT4, and LT5.
      Lotus helped with designing, engineering, and developing the DOHC heads and valvetrain for the 1990's LT5, but did not produce any engines themselves.

    • @5abivt
      @5abivt 6 лет назад

      Cobalt Lukather I can’t say for sure if it’s considered gen II. I was fairly sure the LT1 was considered gen II with reverse flow cooling etc. Even if it is, the 90s LT5 shares nothing with those engines At all. I know some people still think it’s dohc heads on an LT1 /facepalm

    • @cobaltlukather9045
      @cobaltlukather9045 6 лет назад +1

      all Gen II's had reverse flow cooling and, as far as i know, the LT5's were based on the same block casting (same bore spacing, crankshaft position, sensor/bolt placement, oil passages, water cooling jackets, accessories, etc.) as the other Gen II's. the material used may have been altered to a slightly different alloy for higher strength, but i don't know. However, I'm sure that the LT5-specific parts not related to the valvetrain and intake were very similar, if not identical to the LT4 (crankshaft, bearings, oil pressure sensors, etc.)

    • @5abivt
      @5abivt 6 лет назад +1

      Cobalt Lukather ahh ok that’s what I was unsure of if you were thinking it’s related to the actual pushrod architecture. I can tell you for a fact it is not. The LT5 is a completely different design. It has a open deck, 2 piece lower structure for the block and is all aluminum. It’s a completely different design.. more in common with formula racing V8s from the 80s/90s than anything. The only thing the LT5 shares, is the bore spacing which handicapped the 90 LT5 by 35 -40hp.

    I disagree about the diesel beeing "better" "double the torque". A diesel only becomes powerful with a turbocharger. But so does a petrol engine. A petrol doesnt provide as much torque as a diesel when both are turbocharged but when both are n/a the diesel has MUCH less of both.

    • @8Hshan
      @8Hshan 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, and that advantage with turbo is due to a higher possible boost. And modern petrol engines can be really economical, so definitely not "double the mileage" too.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 лет назад +3

      The "double the torque" point isn't quite right, but the rest is: Diesel engines are thermodynamically more efficient indeed, they can extract more energy per unit of fuel than gasoline ones. Gasoline ones can be good, but Diesel ones can be even better.
      The deal about torque isn't much important without the proper gearing anyway, and it all varies per application. You ain't accelerating to a certain speed any faster if you just have "more torque" than someone with same HP value.
      Turbos are better suited for Diesel engines because of their lean burn nature, they'll only burn rich when coal rolling and then they're not even making more power at that point than stoichiometric mixture anyway, but up until that point you're not pre-detonating like with gasoline under too high compression.

    I nominate the GM LS series of engines (the LS7 is one) but it's main advantages are:
    A deep skirt around the crankshaft bosses with 6 bolt main caps, and long head bolts that attach near the crankshaft webbing. An engine builder with a channel "myvintageiron"(plus 4 numbers) notes that the head bolts don't distort the bores because the threads are away from the tops of the cylinders.
    So many of the strongest engines have that deep skirt of metal that extends below the crank centerline, like industrial and farm diesels and larger.
    A great engine not mentioned is the 426 Hemi, produced in the late 60's and early 70's used in Chrysler performance cars. It had a hemispherical combustion chamber and valve placement that allowed large valves, a better angle for the induction ports and also used the deep skirt around the crankshaft. I haven't seen good pictures of the powerful Nissan and Toyota inline 6's, but I'll bet they have a good, strong design in the crankshaft webbing part of the engine block.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 лет назад +8

      Well, there's also a HUGE difference between a 2 hour RACE and a chill tour with a high capacity engine.
      One is at it's limits per application definition itself (it's a race after all), the other is chilling down the road with no need to reach high pressures. I would make the comparison more along the lines of racing vs racing, or chill vs chill.
      The "learn about torque" commented above by Player 2, really, is honestly moot. You got no HP without torque, neither is torque moving anything without HP. "but towing" means nothing too without the proper gearing. The relevant information on towing is the engine reliability and the wheel torque, if you wanna tow FASTER, you need more HP regardless of your torque. If you wanna tow MORE, you need WHEEL TORQUE, you can have all the torque in the world at the engine, you'll have to output it somehow, don't forget about electric or even diesel-electric trains as well, that have, well, electric motors that rev way higher than their diesel counterparts but move a lot. It's all about the gearing.
      More on the whole gearing thing: M1-Abrams tank: uses a turbine for it's power unit. "but that turbine has a lot of torque" yes at the output shaft, after a 10:1 reduction.

    Why do older cars have a longer slower start up, like the charger at 6:55??

    Best current motor by far is the Ford 5.2 liter GT500 motor with just a pulley upgrade, Rev limit increase, E85 fuel, ported stock blower, long tube headers, no cats is making over 945hp to the wheels of a GT500!! That's impressive

    No big block? Those engines are heavy, but when modified can make an easy 500 horsepower with a good cam and some aftermarket aluminum heads. I have a buddy that was just trying to modify his big block in his chevelle, and when he put the new parts on, it started pushing 700 horsepower. Those things are damn crazy and make gobs of torque. More powerful than any small block, I’m afraid.

    My mom once owned a, far from stock, Cleveland 4 barrel that made roughly 500hp. A guy bought it, and the transmission, for a little Datsun drag truck.

    *LT1* don’t matter what car you put it into, if you had it under your hood your car rode fast, no one ever complained about a slow LT1

    My stepdad had a rig rocket, a 2003 heavily suped up 5.9 2500, he raced a Viper dodge once and smoked it, we were at the 2nd set of lights by time he started to finally pull up on us. Worse yet, the viper truck was just the driver, meanwhile there was a full truck of us teenagers with my stepdad and he had the big tidy tank that when full weighs 1500lbs (it wasn't full but did have quite a bit in it), and tons of tools and oilfield chains and such for his job as a heavy equipment operator. Buddy was soooo pissed at his "racing" truck. He probably sucked at driving it, and they were geared wrong, but still, diesel torque is nuts

    Hey guys,
    Love your videos keep it coming!
    How about digging up a few on steam powered cars,new & classics? They're out there,some where,steam powered trucks too.
    A video just on steam engines would be interesting. There are really small outfits manufacturing steam engines for generating electricity, water pumps & transportation.Just a thought.

    The SRT4 Caliber had a 100% completely different engine than the SRT4 Neon. Yes, they were both 2.4L turbocharged in-line 4 Cylinders, but they were completely unrelated.

    I swear if I ever win the lottery I'm bringing Vis to America to do MPH Russia as opposed to FPS Russia. And he will go to Bondurant and every driving school. I swear he's a dude we would have been in Industrial arts with helping you bore out your tecumseh 5hp lawnmower motor!
