Lion Air Flight 610 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by the Indonesian airline Lion Air from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang. On 29 October 2018, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 operating the flight crashed into the Java Sea 13 minutes after takeoff, killing all 189 people on board. The aircraft involved was registered as PK-LQP and was powered by two CFM LEAP-1B engines. It had been in service with Lion Air since August 2018. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). Initial investigations have suggested that the aircraft experienced technical difficulties prior to the crash, and that the crew had requested to return to the airport shortly before communication was lost. In response to the crash, airlines around the world grounded their Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleets, while the Federal Aviation Administration issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive ordering the grounding of all U.S.-registered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft until further notice. The Lion Air crash was the second crash of a Boeing 737 MAX 8 within five months, prompting widespread criticism of the aircraft and its design.
