I’m gonna say 5 at relaunch; a perfect amount in my opinion for relaunch. These are the characters I predict: Powerpuff Girls, Daffy Duck, Joker, Marceline, and Dexter.

Its important to keep in mind they had to remake the entire game from scratch basically because of the new engine. No characters were scrapped thankfully but i wouldn't expect too many new at launch.

Agree 100% on Daffy Duck. He should have been in the launch roster. Scooby Doo should be in there as well, since Shaggy and Velma are already in there. A Dexter's Laboratory stage indicates that we'll likely be getting Dexter.
I feel like Multiversus coming out on May 28th and House of the Dragon starting back on June 16th we will get a HOD or GOT character. Fingers crossed Daenerys Targaryen hopefully riding Drogon as a two in one.
If they relaunch with only 2 new characters the relaunch will fail with casual fans IMO. Casuals don't care about a new engine, fancy netcode, or a new move here or there, they'll see a fighting game that only added 2 new characters in an entire year and laugh. Especially with how sour some people are on live service games lately. Here's hoping they manage at least 5.

I don't think we can realistically expect more than 1, maaaybe 2 new characters. I'd be surprised with more than 1 honestly. They spent most of their time rebuilding the netcode of the game and creating the PvE.
I don’t know about that. Even after the last character we got before the beta closed down they probably had almost finished like two or three characters, maybe even more with how many characters they had leaked with some data in the game. And furthermore they clearly have not only been working on the netcode and PVE, it doesn’t take a whole year with a few months to work on that out only. And they were releasing characters like every two weeks before and they have a way bigger team right now than before, is just logical to think they can make more characters specially after such a long time. But anyway if I had to guess I say 6 would be the perfect number. Like even in other smash like games like smash ultimate Sakurai was able to make 6 characters during a whole year.
I think there will be at LEAST 4 new characters because before it left there was 2 fully playable characters in the data, with Beetlejuice, and Elfaba, I can imagine that 2 more characters. Maximum 8 because they've tripled their size as a team

That’s still two whole months they have a character ready. And by the time of those two months they probably already made even more characters. Let’s not forget that they where doing great with character releases when they had a smaller team working on the game and they where doing it every two weeks instead of each month for only one character like now. Anyway point being that is more than possible to do it and without not even that much pressure to the game devs compared to how bad it was before releasing characters like every two weeks.

Probably the reason why some people were guessing 20 new characters at launch was because they either didn’t know that the game has been built from the ground up again or that they don’t understand how difficult is to program, thinking they just copy and paste the game to Engine 5
I hope more duos are included as two separate characters. The entire game is based on that gimmick of iconic duos. Give us Mordeci, Rigby, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. Those guys are obvious. No disappointment. It allows the devs to release new characters on a constant basis instead of running out of characters in 2 months time

Realistically, I expect about 5 new characters. If it's more I'll be pleasantly surprised, if it's less, then I'm not playing.
