- One the finest and most valuable violins in the world, the ‘Leduc’ Guarneri ‘del Gesú’, has been given on extended loan to the German-American violinist Augustin Hadelich.
Giuseppe Guarneri ‘del Gesú’ and his contemporary Antonio Stradivari are widely considered to be the greatest violin makers in history. Made in Cremona, Italy, and dating from circa 1744, the ‘Leduc’ was one of the last violins to be made by ‘del Gesú’. For over 30 years, it was the favorite instrument of the Polish violin virtuoso Henryk Szeryng, who died in 1988, and has not been heard in public since then. Thirty years later, the ‘Leduc’ has found a worthy successor in the Grammy-winning soloist, Hadelich.
The ‘Leduc’ is to be loaned exclusively and for an extended period of time to Hadelich through the Tarisio Trust, the patronage arm of the fine instrument dealer and auctioneer, Tarisio. The violin can be heard in the spring of 2020 in Hadelich’s concert tours as soloist with the orchestras of Detroit, Helsinki, Portland (OR), Cologne, Oslo, Iceland, Montréal, Minneapolis, Munich, Toronto and many others.
With many thanks to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the video footage.
Hadelich is one of the great violinists of today and very much deserves an instrument like this. This beautiful violin is in excellent hands. I'm very happy for him!
I forgot to mention that I heard this very same violin about 35 years ago when Henryk Szeryng played the Brahms Concerto at the Dade County Auditorium in Miami, FL. He was most gracious and friendly when I met him and his wife, Waltraud, backstage after the concert. He autographed his edition of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for me!
I'VE SEEN YOU ON LITERALLY EVERY CLASSICAL MUSIC VIDEO lol
Szeryng is caring
Andrias Blaasvær that’s witty and fun!
And I read that he actually did give away many of his violins while he was alive.
Augustin is spectacular. I've heard him pay his Strad. Looking forward to hearing "Leduc"
The best move the rightful owners could do! The Ex-Szeryng has a lot to offer in sound and volume. It is one of the best concert instruments of today!
hi augustin , i normally listen to techno and dance music but i found a video of you and i would just like to say you blew my mind , you are amazing and i really like the passion you bring , thankyou
Just last night, I had the great pleasure of hearing Augusitn play the Mendelssohn concerto with the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Carnegie Hall. The audience were simply enthralled, and gave the violinist a monumental standing ovation at the end.
I have personally heard him play on this violin in concert several times. The fact he is one of the greatest young violinists goes without saying. Speaking purely about the instrument, it becomes obvious fairly quickly that this is not a "normal" violin, even amongst the peers of other instruments by Stradivari and Del Gesu. The G and D strings are shockingly powerful in a way that is hard to describe. The opening of Brahms VC sounds almost like a foghorn. When he would play an open string on the G or D strings during an intense passage, I would almost laugh at how incredibly powerful, booming, and resonant the sound was. The unusually strong bass of this instrument can also be heard in recordings on youtube. A league of its own (both the player and the instrument).
Perfect match!
Lucky Violin to have such an amazing Violinist.
One of his first performances with the Leduc was the Paganini Concerto showcased in this video. Entire performance with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will go down as one of the best recordings of this concerto.
(And I believe he only had this instrument in his hands 3 or 4 months before this Jan 2020 performance....!!!!)
outstanding sound- thank you for sharing this ! Good luck with this brilliant instrument ! "sing" for us with this violin ...Danke !!!
Augustin, your exploration of sound in each instrument you play has set a new standard in the history of the violin. I'm glad you have another pretty good one to play with.
Augustin have toured in San Diego last 3 years or so. We have been lucky enough to have other greats as Joyce Yang, Hillary Hahn and Joshua Bell, but Hadelich remains my favorite. That Guarneri cannot be in better hands.
Personally, I like it’s sound better than a Stradivarius.
From the best hands of the past to the very best hands of today!
Technically, the last time the Le Duc was heard in public was in 1994 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City celebrating Guarneri del Gesu's 250th anniversary. I was there. It was played and introduced for the first time as, "ex-Szeryng," by a Romanian, E. Sarbu. I am glad that it is, once again, being played (sans shoulder-rest; Bravo!).
omg I thought someone was singing opera the very beginning but NOPE just the beauty that is the del Gesu
Like Szeryng once said: the Leduc sounds not like a trumpet but more like human voice. Amazing instrument and i'm glad such a great musician gets to play with it.
As a person who loves classical music, I think this guy is a wonderful inspiration to all violinists and musicians who wish to be professionals.
This violin couldn't be in better hands. Congratulations, Mr. Hadelich! Well deserved!! Looking forward to hearing you again along with Filarmônica de Minas Gerais, in Brazil.
Feel privileged to have actually heard Henryk Szeryng showing us this instrument and playing it during an Australian tour while I worked for ABC Concerts many years ago!
Sehr geehrter Maestro Hadelich,

This man is inspirational
So happy for you! It's a beautiful instrument, I'm sure you'll make it sing!
I love the "Leduc"! I'm so glad that you are the violinist who now gets to play it! What a wonderful match! ❤
Having heard him in Seattle play the Mendelssohn and being entirely enchanted, particularly with the second movement, I can hardly imagine how beautiful it will sound on this instrument. Maestro Hadelich has been a revelation to me over the past near-decade. This violin is truly in the very best of hands.
You deserve the best, Augustin!
So Glad for you. Just as there are many levels to the humans with their skills, so there is a dizzying range of responsiveness and richness among fiddles. We are blessed in this time that so many gifted performers are able to share their artistry using these instruments. I played fiddle for six decades, and enjoyed my un-pedigreed fiddles immensely. Whatever their provenance, several had voices rich enough that in all the decades I never exhausted the exploration of their range. I hope you find this is true with your far greater mastery.
Perfect match for the violin and the violinist!!
You deserve this heavenly instrument for sure!
Bellísimo!!! Gran momento y experiencia Augustín!!! Que lo disfrutes!!!!
I still remember going to a couple of Henryk Szeryng concerts in Brisbane in the 1960s, when he played this violin - a sound to send shivers down your spine! It was on loan to him at the time, and he bought it in 1970. He also played his Stradivarius during the encores - a complete contrast in sound. Another wonderful Guarneri to listen to is the "Cannone", once owned by Paganini - I have a recording of Massimo Quarta playing Paganini's 6 Violin Concertos on this violin, and once you have heard these, any other version pales into insignificance!
Magnificent violin - explosive sound! Love Guarneri. Brilliant playing.
Congratulations, Mr. Hadelich. Very happy for you!!! :-)
I love your playing! You really need that amazing violin!
Such beauty 🎼
Wow he sounds AMAZING on it. It suits him. :)
What a great news-a wonderful instrument into the hands of wonderful musician! Congratulations!
Regardless Szeryng or Hadelich plays, the instrumenta has so much personality, its sound expresses in the same way
We heard it at his recent concert with the Pacific Symphony. Incredible sound.

No one has commented on this - did he start the tour or did everything shut down before he had a chance to get going?
He writes about the technical challenges of virtual concerts on his website. Let’s beat this microscopic enemy and get back to live playing in front of live audiences!
I think the Detroit concert is on his channel. He played the Pag 1, iirc.
will you change you bow now , to match this violin or will your bow remain the same?
Good question!
He’ll most likely have a few to choose from!
Bravo!!!! Augustin is the best violinist for this violin!
congratulation..greeting from bali island
People be like: "Can I touch it??" NO.. HARD NO.
Great player
Sounds SO good! Congrats Augustin!
Now we know it. Szerying wasnt a genius. His violin made the genius. I am kidding, but listening this i cannot help thinking that this violin elevates the game of a player.
You are my inspiration to keep playing my violin♥ love you♥
Come suoni tu, ti basterebbe un violino giocattolo, sei fantastico! Bravo!
This is the best one of all del gesu.
Imagine that brain working so fast.
Very nice! Looking forward to a Paganini Concerto record?
I gave up the violin at school, my girlfriend at the time was grade 8, I still love this beautiful instrument. This type of post is what RUclips is for, bravo and congratulations
Wonderful!
Wow
What is the piece playing at 0:01?
Somebody wrote here that it's Paganini's Concerto nr. 1.
Wow. I am exciting to see the concerts with this amanzing violin in yours hands!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏😍😍😍😍
Is this the best violin that exists?
Can someone explain why others can’t be made like this one?
Impeccable technique and experience, as well as masterful design + a really good batch of wood which is the hardest part to recreate.
Even half decent wood nowadays is extremely expensive, and wood as good as Guarneri and Antonius had back then is virtually non-existent
That violin has had 300 years of upgrades (neck, fingerboard, modern bow, bridge, strings, etc...) and playing by the best to get better and better. All violins open up, develop new colours and resonances over time.
😘😘😘😘😘😘
WHAT THE HELL HE'S FROM MY HOMETOWN
I wish I had that kind of ear.
Did his face get burned or something?
He was injured in a fire on his family's farm in 1999 and was unable to play violin for over a year.
@@Azian2DaMax We're so lucky he survived to provide us with his magnificent playing
What happened with your Strad?
He looks like Cauby Peixoto, one of the greatest Brazilian singers.
Does anybody knows the name of the song at the beginning??
gladiussecus paganini violin concerto 1, movement 2 :)
Lemme see that scroll!
Lol that thumb nail.
Which piece does he play?
Paganini concerto no 1
A violin is like a banjo .
what is the piece at the beginning?
jstc I’m wondering the same thing
Paganini violin concerto n°1, 2nd movement
¿How much could be cost this violin?
ARTURO TIHERY Millions of dollars.
This musician is on fire!🔥
Savage but i dig it.
It always bothered me that these guys need the "best" instruments to play on. Cause like Lebron James is still the greatest even if he's playing with a cheap rubber ball from wal mart
playbackproductions1 why shouldn't the best players get the best instruments? Who would you rather have it?
Yes, LeBron is competing in the NBA with a cheap rubber ball and old thrift sneakers 🙄
They don't need the best instruments, the best instruments need them.
But, of course, we listeners want the best players to have the best instruments. They are making beautiful music for us, after all. Your sports analogy doesn't work well for music.
