How SNMP Works | Network Fundamentals Part 24

  • We can manage proactively, and we can manage reactively. SNMP is a protocol that can help us with both.
    A management server will use SNMP polling to collect information from devices on our network. This builds charts and dashboards to help us evaluate the health of our network.
    If a device has a problem, it may even send an SNMP trap to the management server. The server can then take an appropriate action, like alert us.
    SNMP information is stored in a hierarchical structure called a MIB (Management Information Base). This is a collection of objects called OIDs (Object Identifiers). These describe the information that can be collected from devices, and how to interpret it.
    When a poll is sent, the server will also specify a community string. This string is a simple form of authentication. Unfortunately, it is stored in plan-text, both in the message and in the configuration.
    There are three versions of SNMP. v1 came first, and v2 extended this by adding support for 64-bit counters. v3 added real authentication and encryption. v3 is recommended in most cases.

    Studying for my Network+. I have hours and hours of video content under my belt already, as well as a lot of stuff read and written down. This was the most comprehensive video I've seen on SNMP, definitely checking out your other stuff.

    This video is excellent. Concise, clear and visual explanation! Thus an example is shown at the end, which makes it more practical-fun :)

    Do you already know how many more topics/videos will be added to this playlist?
    This would help me alot to estimate how much of the fundementals you already mentioned in the 24 episodes.
    Keep up the great work!

    Again a great video - thanks a lot. Did i miss the explenation of 'public' and 'private' strings in the video that is asked for in the forth quizz question or isn't it included in the video?

      That's one to get you thinking! They're well known strings, so Google should help you out.

    Hello sir, I want to learn how the SNMP Set command works. How is the device configured according to this command?

    • @NetworkDirection
      @NetworkDirection  2 года назад

      This will vary depending on the device. It's best to check your device's documentation for specifics.
      Although, we rarely use SNMP to configure a device. Some people may use it to make some changes, but there are better ways to do that these days (eg, automation such as Ansible)

    You can now file this under: videos RUclips doesn't want you to know about. Not enough views but excellent overall reviews. Blame it on the pesky algorithms of RUclips ❔❓

    • @NetworkDirection
      @NetworkDirection  3 года назад

      It would be nice to have more views, but I'm content.
      I think to get really high views on RUclips, across the whole channel anyway, it needs to be a full time job.
      For me, its just what I can fit in on the side.
