I think one way to inoculate the biochar is to use it to filter water from your roof in an off grid set up where you rely on rain water you catch for household and drinking use. Build two cement chambers, one filled with sand and the other filled with biochar. Pass the rain water thru the sand chamber and then thru the biochar chamber. You can also pump river water and pass the water thru these two chamber and the water would be 75 % potable which would make your home water filtration system last longer because your input is nearly clean water in the first place. You can just regularly replace the biochar with a new batch and the old char is partially innoculated and can used in the garden.
I would LOVE an update on this process and if it is still working well. Also any improvements that have been made to the system.
guys could fabricate some mesh cages to fit inside the retort bins that could be winched out with an overhead beam chain power winch while hot, moved to an unload area, winched down on to a pallet jack and rolled to a cooling area. Have 2 mesh cages per retort, then have a couple extra empty cages to fill with wood and winch in place to let the 3rd or 4th retort to continue the process. I can see how the system might be laid out in plan view for efficiency with either 1 or 2 overhead power winches inside a pre-fab steel structural frame and metal roof (I'm an Architect in CA that does work for Commercial Industrial clients).

Hi, you were talking about the insulated chamber and how the outside could be touched but was still at 150f. Could you surround it with a water jacket and transfer some of the waste heat into preheated water before you heat the water in the existing heat exchangers?

how many times did you have to refill the feed wood for the 30 gal to finish?
large control room.... suggest adding name tags for all control valves and pumps, and directions of flow. Think also about fire proofing the walls on the inside. A wall schematic would also be appropriate.
How much of the smoke CA in % need to go back to the burn chamber ? I want to stiffen some of to run a generator as I live in the tropics and do not need the heat unless it can be used to generate steam :)
When the new wood gas returns to the gassifier to be recycled into the process, what determines if the heat goes up to the heat exchange or through the channels to the retorts? For context, I'm interested in the feasibility of a steam driven turbine with alternator to produce electricity for storage of immediate distribution. I would love to visit your facilities and learn more.

what about the wood in the outer chamber to make fire? is it became charcoal too after 5hours just like the wood inside inner chamber? or they become ashes as fuel?

1) Could this be sold to factory farms to absorb their biologic run off? To add the "biology" to the char.
2) have you ever considered atolls to add biology to the char before selling? After initial step, it is mostly free, just converting air into plant.
Great stuff! I have a question. Lets say you would use the Biochar to filter contaminated water that has some chemicals in it, would that biochar then still be ok to put into the garden soil or would the chemicals you filtered leach into the soil then?
I was listening to a podcast recently and the panelist stated that ''biochar is a great home for microbes'' but went on to say that when analysis of the soil was made with a microscope,he found that most of the microbes had moved away from the plant and into the biochar and has gone on to state that ''biochar is detrimental to plant health''.
Leighton Morrison is the guys name behind the experiments. (He's been working with soil for decades)

I have a chicken composting system that I was thinking about adding biochar to, but I could add it to their coop. Then when I clean the coop it will go into their compost and already be partially charged.

if your system was 100% efficient, would it still be profitable figuring the energies it took to make and assemble the steel, facilities and control system? what then is payback period?

So if this char is absorbing so much it would seem to me that eating it would absorb nutrients from the body? Am I wrong?
From your intestines, yeah, possibily. Ingesting charcoal is prescribed in an attempt to stop/slower poisoning, it should adsorb the toxins before the intestines absorb them. (of course the char has a limit to it's capacity, and it won't remove what's been already absorbed by the body, so it's not totally reliable... but can help)
If you have not already would you have blueprints for sale and if so how much?
Does adding char to the chicken feed affect the taste of the eggs? Or if a person has an intolerance for eggs (. Store bought eggs make me nauseous) would it make it easier to digest the eggs?
Interesting that one insulates the cooking box where cold water could be passed around it and that would heat the water too. No? Yes?
A cooling loop would take heat away from the box. The idea is to keep the heat in to make the biochar.

Unless you’re daily ingesting volatile toxins, it’s probably just capturing nutrients from the GI tract
In the little two barrel process that you show here and in the first video, I noticed two things. One was that you put holes in the bottom of the inner barrel. That would let the expanding gasses escape into the outer barrel where they would be burned off. Presumably, there would be enough dust and ash left at the end of the process to make it so that oxygen could not enter the inner barrel once the volatile gasses have burned off? Is that right. The other thing I noticed is that when you filled the inner barrel, you just put the top back on the inner barrel. There wasn't any mechanism described to tell how or if it was necessary to seal that top back onto the inner barrel. So, I am wondering, why couldn't you have just filled the inner barrel, not put any holes in it, and placed it upside-down into the larger barrel? If the inner barrel's cover isn't tightly sealed, it would still allow the escaping gasses to escape. Then, If the presence of dust or ash was what kept oxygen from creeping back in and ruining the char (by igniting it) that same dust of ash would still be able to seal the cover of the inner barrel - I think. I believe the idea is to set up something similar to a positive air pressure clean room. By having the holes on the bottom so long as there are gasses escaping the oxygen can't migrate inward. It's a little like an upside down boat not allowing water in. Top down works but some oxygen does make it's way in reducing the yield. Essentially you don't develop back pressure by allowing the gas to escape out of the top. I have seen it done that way but the yield can be considerably less and there's no benefit. You also don't want to put spacers under the inner barrel for the same reason. Think of it like an old fashion pressure cooker where a weight on top of the outflow controls the pressure inside. The gas tends to not escape in or out of the bottom until the pressure either inside or outside is higher. The pressure will always be lower on the outside of the inner barrel because of the vent so long as the wood in the inner barrel is producing gas. When the pressure equalizes you can tell by that second release of white smoke. It's telling you the inner barrel has stopped releasing gas. Hope that made sense. I think the pressure cooker analogy is the best way of looking at it.

I'm talking about the cup shaped cap on a pressure cooker that sets on top of the outlet tube. All that creates the pressure is the weight of the cap. A heavier cap creates more back pressure. With the barrels the weight of the inner barrel creates the back pressure. You never want more than a couple of PSI in a system like this but that's more than enough to lift the barrel slightly to relieve the pressure. The barrel will settle back down before any oxygen enters the inner barrel due to the positive pressure. Easier to show in drawings than to explain. Sounds more complicated than it is.

The retort system we have is custom built and not sold individually.
I think this would be great in Australia as the soil here is really bad and in need of improvement.
I really like this system. It makes sense. Im about to build my second kiln and intend to incorporate the gasifier element before the retort for a trailer based mobile unit. Hey, Ive currently got a modified Hookway style retort I built last year. Im still modifying it, as I've not had the best success with it, but this may be in part to less than ideal moisture content of the wood. It rains here, a lot. I do intend to start a channel up on here in the near future and upload some videos, otherwise I could send you some pictures? Cheers..

How does the average man/home grower work with this?
Utilize small amounts in the planting zone of your garden directly where plants will be put. Make sure it is properly inoculated and more and more microbial life will continue to inhabit it, enriching a home garden's soil.
can you turn a dead human body or animal into biochar? or is it just wood? that really a concept.
Yes, a body can be put through the charification process to become biochar. The levels of moisture would be likely very high and not optimal, but it is possible.

The reason that viruses have become an issue and will continue increasingly to be an issue is the fact that the environment is becoming increasingly anaerobic because of many factors including excessive combustion. Aren't there carcinogens in biochar? I would think that there are. I would not eat the stuff.
+alan30189 no there aren't its just charcoal.... there is alot less carcinogens in that then there is in your body already

Do not put that biochar in your mouth it mithg be toxic.
