  • Harvesting Our Biggest Sweet Potato Bed EVER With My Daughter Pt. 1
    In mid-October we harvested our 3'x32' raised sweet potato bed. This bed has been used to grow potatoes and squash in the past, but this was our first year attempting to grow sweet potatoes in this bed.
    We purchased the sweet potato slips for this bed from Tatorman.com, and have purchased slips from them in the past.
    The varieties we show in this video are beauregard sweet potatoes and centennial sweet potatoes. One of the things we have dealt with in the past is damage from voles, and this year is no different, even though we attempted to use a vole deterrent device, we still struggled with some damage; however, that wasn't the case through the entire harvest.
    As an added bonus our younger gardener in training decided she really wanted to help with the harvest, and to be honest, she seemed to pick out the biggest sweet potatoes every time!
    Please enjoy this sweet potato harvest 2022 video!

    I think a mesh or metal hardware cloth under the bed and over is the best bet to keep voles out.

      Yes, it definitely made a huge difference in our purple stoke bed, so I think we will make that our goal for next year!

      They have been pretty aggressive with us, and more so in recent years as they realize we are consistent food source. That is the reason we have to do a better job protecting our crops for sure. :)

      Thank you so much! Voles look a lot like mice, and when they are hungry, watch out. They have destroyed entire sweet potato crops for us in the past!

    I am in zone 6 and I plan on putting in some of these Beauregard sweet potatoes this year I'm going to buy them at the store and just use those I really like the idea of the black plastic for heat

  • @davidg813

    To eliminate the Vols take a old plastic container like a margarine container with a lid puts 50/50 mix of baking part of the soda and flour in it put the lid on with a hole cut in the lid and lay the carton down on its side so the vole can go into it it will eat the f l o u r and baking soda mixture and that will kill the vole

    • @fancythat5136
      @fancythat5136 Год назад

      Do you lay that container with soda and flour under the soil or on top? Thanks

    • @davidg813
      @davidg813 Год назад

      @@fancythat5136 you laying down on top of the soil on a floor depending on where you're putting it with the hole in the top by the floor so that the Critter can walk inside the container and eat the flower baking soda mixture

    Nice harvest! Voles are truly a pain. I just started harvesting my Beauregard sweet potatoes this morning. I had to come in the house around 9AM because it was too hot out. Tomorrow, I will resume my harvest. Knock on wood so far I have no vole damage. I'm having to dig into clay several potatoes grew deep, which means I have broke a few🙃
    I was going to suggest hardware cloth but it looks like the voles may have come in from the top of the bed?

    where would one find food grade black plastic? seems like a good idea to warm up the soil for sweet potatoes

  • @aleighabowling4240
    @aleighabowling4240 Год назад +2

    What’s eating those? How did it get under the plastic?

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Год назад

      The critters eating these are voles. You can actually see what they look like (because we captured them on video) in pt. 2 of this video. They are small, and they can dig through a lot, so next year we are putting down hardware cloth to stop the problem as best we can.

    Do you just compost the vole damaged ones or do you cut off the damaged parts and eat them?

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Год назад +1

      Great question! If they are really big sweet potatoes, then we can cut off the ends, but the smaller ones we usually just compost.
