I also live in Virginia (Lynchburg area) I grow a large garden each year. I grow for others also. I have friends that are unable to garden because of age.I am planting Purple sweet potatoes for the first time. I went to Target and bought 6 potatoes and have enough now to share. I gave the same potatoes to another friend. I also have clay soil. The first time we planted the garden 17 yrs ago I planted carrots and had to dig them with a pick axe. since then I have put tons of chips in the garden and the soil is now great. If you are close I would like to meet you. I guess the camera person is your wife. We have been married 58 years this June. She is a great help to me.

Sane are & same soul issues 😅I’ve had to make my soil & I save & amend the next year 😩 it’s a hard rash but once you understand the soil don’t work for much you just have to find a way learning as u grow

Grew some this year and got it in late June and harvested in September. My white ones didn’t come out great but my purple ones came out but wish I had left then in longer because they would have probably been a decent size. I added compost and fertilizer after planting but I didn’t mound it well and I think my spacing was too close. Thanks for sharing, I’m excited to grow them again next spring.

Awesome harvest! Yes, we grew mostly purple Japanese sweet potatoes this year, along with a few Garnet sweet potatoes. The harvest was unbelievable, even though they grew in a 4' x 4' bed.

I have struggled to grow my own slips for years, trying every method there is and end up ordering slips every year that are questionable even from the big names in the business.
This year I ended up with very few and very small sweet potatoes and decided to take cuttings from the vines that did grow and am overwintering them in hope of having some great starts for next year.
So far they are doing great. They took root within two days in the rain water I put them in and within a week had tons of roots on them.
I decided to put them in a planting tray to up my odds of successfully over wintering them and I will take new cuttings from them close to spring for my new starts.
By the way I am in zone 3b and am able to grow sweet potatoes. I love it.

What a beautiful harvest. They are very good size, especially for purple sweet potatoes. I planted some last summer. This year I have Beauregard and organic. I am waiting for 120 days. Right now, its 100 days. I may go 130 days. I will check the end of September. S.C. STILL VERY HOT HERE. Thanks for sharing.

I'll give you a story. I grew up in NW of Iran in a 2000 year old Christian village. Everyone had 5 acres to live on. Passed on from fathers to sons. You weren't allowed to sell. This village had its own micro climate. Green all year. About 80 families with 80 orchards. They grew alfalfa, wild flowers between rows of trees and let them die and compost naturally every year. Sheep would graze in it. This was 2000 year practice. They planted fruit trees and vegetables in this soil and let weeds grow around them. They never fertilized, never sprayed. I remember digging a 4 foot deep hole when I was 7 years old. That's how soft it was. The next day, half the hole was in ground water. While farms outside our village owned by others were dead half the year, brown, with rock hard soil. they used all types of fertilizer and got less food. They even resorted to sabotage and even trying to claim our lands from us by force. Let weeds have their place. We used to harvest fruit with 4 foot tall weeds all around the trees. They told us kids, never pull weeds. They will enrich your soil.

I can't really grow sweet potatoes. I don't have the room or growing season for it. I have, however, watched quite a few youtubers planting and harvesting them and your haul appears to be on par or better than most for the area planted. Good job!
