  • My Daughter Is Better Than Me at Harvesting Sweet Potatoes - Pt. 2
    This is part two of our sweet potato harvest.
    Link to part 1 is here: • Harvesting Our Biggest...
    In mid-October we harvested our 3'x32' raised sweet potato bed. This bed has been used to grow potatoes and squash in the past, but this was our first year attempting to grow sweet potatoes in this bed.
    We purchased the sweet potato slips for this bed from Tatorman.com, and have purchased slips from them in the past.
    The varieties we show in this video are beauregard sweet potatoes and centennial sweet potatoes. One of the things we have dealt with in the past is damage from voles, and this year is no different, even though we attempted to use a vole deterrent device, we still struggled with some damage; however, that wasn't the case through the entire harvest.
    As an added bonus our younger gardener in training decided she really wanted to help with the harvest, and to be honest, she seemed to pick out the biggest sweet potatoes every time!
    Please enjoy this sweet potato harvest 2022 video!

    I just love watching the two of you harvesting together! Lots of positive energy there!!
    Foolish voles…gotta be upset at their destructive behavior!

      You aren't wrong! We don't love to see the damage, but I think we will be able to solve a lot of that for this coming year with our hardware cloth. And, I loved rewatching this harvest with my daughter as well. :)

    Hi. Not sure what voles are 🙂. I will have to look up. For the first time this year, I had at least 1/3 of my crop eaten by little black worms. Like half of the potatoes gone, eaten. Not sure what happened. The only thing I did different is the weather was still nice and I was able to keep them in the soil longer. I wonder ... Has this even happened to you? These weren't in beds but directly in the ground. Thanks for your great videos!

    The voles are lucky they haven't found my garden after what my dog did to the rats and mice, still a fantastic harvest especially considering your shorter season.

      You know, if we had a cat or a dog...but unfortunately that is not in our future plans. But, you are right, we enjoyed the harvest very much. :) Have a wonderful week!

    I live in the South and I had the same issue of cracking with my Vardaman too. So this may be an issue with this type. It would be interesting how it does in Mississippi where it took off.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Год назад +1

      Great point. It would be interesting to see how they would do in MS! I don't remember the cracking being such an issue for us last season, but it is not at all ideal to have that splitting this season, so now I am not sure if we want to continue with that variety since there are so many others we didn't have this problem with.

    I’m sorry about the voles. But despite that, you did get a good haul.

      I don't love the damage, but you are right, they left a good number of them alone, which we can thoroughly enjoy!

    How do you season your sweet potatoes? I made some mashed sweet potatoes for thanksgiving with no seasoning and they tasted a little bland to me.

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Год назад +1

      After we let them sit for a few weeks, they really taste a lot better and then we often steam them, but this year for Thanksgiving we made sweet potato casserole, but that has a lot of additional seasonings in it as well. Personally, I like baked and mashed with a little butter.
