    It was my greatest honor in this life to work with Douglas Trumbull. He is a man (a photographer at heart but a humanitarian overall) who has inspired me as much as all of my greatest heroes in the business. This film takes me back to my earliest years of becoming a fan of the genre when I was an 11 year old kid in grammar school and the fact that I grew up out of poverty to years later work with this man blew my mind. Long before I worked for him, I spent every weekend for 35 weeks in a row at my local cinema watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind, one more of Mr Trumbull's incredible accomplishments. When I met him, I tripped over my words because to me, he is one of the Titans, like Ray Harryhausen who is a man who changed the world. Both of whom in reality, upon meeting them, were humble, thoughtful, engaging and very caring human beings. Mr Trumbull gave me a gift, a memory of a moment when he approved of my work in front of the rest of the crew on a big project that made me feel greater than I've ever felt before or since. This film and all who created it are golden for many reasons... I'm both surprised and relieved it's never been remade.

      I never want this film to be re-made. It is perfection, and the pacing is perfect. It might be slow to some, but I love it

      @@TheTimeProphet - I made a short film that's here on RUclips (In the Fall of Gravity) it's stop motion animated and many of my shots are 15 seconds long intentionally. I've always preferred slower paced and thought provoking productions. Given the subject matter and overall message of Silent Running, it's probably a more compelling message for today's world than it was when it was made... the same is true for Mr Trumbull's other film 'Brainstorm'.

      If it WAS remade, there is only ONE actor, i believe, who could resurrect Bruce Dern's unforgettable character and that is Matt McCoughnahey

    • @camdix3250
      @camdix3250 7 месяцев назад +4

      Agreed! "Silent Running" IS perfection, just as it is! People ought to work on new stories rather than thinking they can "improve" what has already been done. Give the same kind of message, but do it differently. "Silent Running" as created by all of the wonderful people, from actors - including the DRONES!, crew and musicians should not be "re-done". It's a work of art, just as it is. To re-do it would be like re-painting the Mona Lisa. No. It's been done once and the original is the best. @@TheTimeProphet

      It must have been amazing. At 56 and still wish I had met the maker's. I tried but as an Autistic fan in the UK isn't likely to bump into top film makers. The film impacted on my young mind so much. I would love to see the film remake but it couldn't be better, it would have to be made so carefully to not lose the magic of the 70's.... loal maybe seen as a saviour then but "people have better things to do now" he's seen as a suicidel murdering mutineer. Causing millions of pounds of damage 💔 How times have changed & enjoying the simple wonder of a leaf in your hand. This film seems like my life. Douglas Trumbull must have been such an interesting person so sad I miss meeting him in this life.

    I saw this movie in the theater at 6 years old, and was crying so hard by the end I couldn't walk out by myself. Decades later, just hearing the opening theme song would just ruin me. Yet.. it is one of my all time favorites, and I have built models of the drones, and forest domes.
    Also Bruce Dern's first time being the main good guy.. he was awesome.. If it was the movies goal to make us more empathetic towards our natural world, it sure worked on me!

    The reason the others didn't care about the trees and plants so much is because they didn't exist on Earth for a very long time and no one was attached to them. Bruce Denr's character had an attachment to them and understood the importance of them. The others didn't know enough to care, and their jobs didn't involve being caretakers of the plants, they ran the ship, I believe.

    Great review, Prophet. I saw this upon its original release. It then played on TV rather often well into the 1990s. Most first saw it there actually.
    Douglas Trumbull (RIP, Douglas) himself took apart the model of the Valkey Forge when its glue began failing he said in the DVD commentary from the 2000 home video release. Suspect he gave parts of it away which is why some pieces survive today.
    I believe this is only film for the actors insude the droids, Mark Persons, Cheryl Sparks, and Larry Whisenhunt - no idea if any if them are still with us.
    This film has a slim novelization from Scholastic Books in 1973 by an obscure writer named Harlan Thompson. The film was frequently featured on the covers of various sci-fi film magazines in the US during the 1970s which coveted the newsstands up after Star Wars was so popular.
    Bruce Dern is a gracious man who has signed several items for me from SR. He's 87 now, still working, but this is definitely the film he'll be remembered for.👍👍👍

    Thank you so much for reviewing "Silent Running". This is one of my most favorite films of all. I saw this film when it was released in 1972 and I was 15. The ending scene made me cry then as it does every time I watch it on the DVD copy I have - and I re-watch it a lot! It's story is more imoprtant now, than it ever was, with the changes occuring to our planetary environment - wihich is not only climate change but abuse of the oceans and freshwater sources and destruction of farmland and watersheds to name a few. Your comments are very astute and concise and you treat this film with the utmost respect, which is what it deserves. Thank you for that. I fully agree with you, wishing that Freeman Lowell had let Huey go with Dewey on the last surviving pod. Perhapst Lowell's need for comfort as he ended his life superceded that. All films have some type of agenda, some moreso than others. The agenda may be mere entertainment, with no overt "message", but I think that is still an agenda of sorts. This film as storytelling at its best. If one wishes to say that it has an agenda, that's quite OK. It's a pretty darned important message. Thank you for addressing the people who performed as the drones. For anyone interested in "Silent Running" you can still purchase it on DVD. On the DVD are some "Extras" and one is a fantastic documentary film, shot while "Silent Running" was being made. The actors who made the drones come alive are shown, and Sheryl Sparks, who was one of them, is interviewed. Knowing that this was how the drones were brought to life added a richness to the film, for me, beyond words. Finally, the Peter Schickele / Diane Lampert song, "Rejoice in the Sun", sung near the beginning and at the very end of the film is incredibly moving - especially when paired with the scenes of Dewey caring for the plants and forest. Thank you again, so very much, for this wonderful review of, "Silent Running". Best wishes.

    Good observation about the end of the movie. He should have kept both robots together. It is tragic, in a tragic story it makes sense. Another senseless act of violence. It felt as if Bruce Derns character thought he didnt deserve to live anymore because there was something broken inside him. And via projection was saying the same thing about the robot. Of course sadly the robot was only broken externally and was perfectly fine mentally. So like the body of the crewmate he strangled and the crewmates he blew up there was only one option for his accidental violence against the robot. And that was to take the robots life as well. So sad.

      Right, The Starlost. Harlan Ellison (City on the Edge of Forever) was heavily involved in this show but was so embarrassed by it he used the name Cordwainer Bird in the credits. Sci-fi shot on videotape never looks good. I'll try and find the Starlost Roku channel you mentioned because the RUclips ones are very poor video quality (360p).

    Wondering if the error of judgement made by Lowell in not allowing Hughey and Dewey to tend the remaining garden together is meant to represent the impact of his solitude, the knowledge of his killings of his crewmates and his insubordination on his mental health and ability to reason clearly. The character of David Bowman was still more alone on board Discovery after he was forced to disable Hal in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Solitude, self awareness and the challenge to resourcefulness can exhibit strange effects in different individuals.
