That happened to me as well. I started wondering if there was something better to do with the resource than just firewood you know? I also started understanding more about why certain woods were used in some cases and not others. I have known hickory had flex and made good tool handles. I had never tried to split it before. That was NOT fun. Interesting stuff Mark
So cool, wood is the most renewable resource and used in so many different applications. I like to play drums and the shells of different species produce different tones in the wood that I didn’t even know about. So many resources can be produced of just one tree!!
Pretty cool the technology of the new sawmills how far they have came ! I can’t believe that they just discard good timber out your way I harvest black walnut off our property. I have a guy that will pay me $1.25 a board foot on the doyal system. One tree could add up to 800 and some dollars.
I think much of the wood is low value and so the one or two good trees in 5 acres in timber are just not worth it. That is my guess. Lots of poor quality trees like hackberry, Sycamore, catulpa, poor quality oaks etc. Also, we burn wood but most are just full electric or use pellet stoves. Thanks for watching another Tom!

Since getting into chainsaws, I have sense realized a total different understanding of trees, wood, and lumber.
