The last part of this episode where Cornette references all the godfathers of wrestling passing on and how those were the ones that got him into wrestling is where it hits hard.
The Flair/Funk feud that started at Wrestlewar 89 got me into professional wrestling. Their "I Quit" match at Clash IX is my favorite match of all time. Now here we are 30 years later and I still think that was Flair's best feud. It may be the best feud in the history of professional wrestling. I really thought Terry Funk was crazy enough to cripple him.
I remember being a little kid and being soooo mad at Terry Funk b/c I thought he had broken Ric Flairs' neck when he pile-drived him after his match w/Steamboat. If I could've jumped thru the TV screen and attacked "The Funker" I would've😂. I'm sad he's gone, but glad I got to enjoy him over the years. Thank you Mr. Funk. 🎉🎉💐💐
Terry and Bray Rest in Peace. You both are missed. Thoughts and prayers to both family's. Let's keep the fireflies alive and Funk it all to keep them alive in memories.
Got to the end of this incredible tribute to Terry Funk & just hearing the weariness & hurt in Cornette's voice as he's lamenting that there's not many of his influences/inspirations just shows how much he cares for the business. The fact that he's saying this presumably right before the passing of Windham "Bray Wyatt" Rotonda is absolutely haunting
The 89 Flair Funk feud is so underrated. Understandably because it followed the Flair Steamboat Trilogy which is untouchable. But just shows Terrys greatness that even in his mid 40s he followed that epic feud. Not to mention he still had a decade of quality matches afterwards. Corny is right, the longevity of quality stuff might be unprecedented

This was such a tough week for wrestling fans and the promotions. We lost a legend in Terry Funk and the unique Bray Wyatt. I’m really looking forward to smackdown tonight to see everyone come together to pay their respects to both of these men.

Terry made you believe in wrestling. He made you feel every bump, every grimace on his face when he would shout in pain, he made you feel his pain just by the believe-ability and the way he could sell it. He knew how to control the fans and knew what made them pop. He was that good and why he was a World Heavyweight Champion who earned his spot in wrestling history! Thank you Terry for what you gave us in your long and legendary career!

Terry Funk walking through the crowd at November 2 Remember was insane as well he showed up in a graduation cap and verbally ran down Tommy Dreamer one of my favorite ECW moments ever!
After hearing about Terry's passing, I rewatched the Dark Side of the Ring episode about FMW. I love how he laughs at the thought of all the people who sat in the front row of an exploding ring match. Rest in Power, you beautiful Funker!

F'd up week to put it mildly. Even though we knew Terry wasn't in good shape & the end was coming it doesn't make it any easier in any way. The passing of Bray, Windham Rotunda, was just a wicked blow out of nowhere that hopefully is a reminder for each and every one of us to appreciate every day we are fortunate to get. Don't take any of these people for granted because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us. Rest easy gentlemen & thank you both for everything you did, good bad and in between for our entertainment
The impact of Terry Funk is not to be underestimated as said here. He's entertained so many generations of fans it's likely never to be topped again. What a wrestler! RIP to the legend.
Eddie Guerrero's first dark match was against Terry Funk and on his book he said that he was super cool and let him had some offense even if it was a squash match.
As I'm from a rural part of West Texas, Funk passing was all anyone could talk about for the last few days. Hell, my buddy's mom used to babysit for him back in the day. Truly sad.
RIP Terry Funk that feud with with Ric Flair, simply iconic. One of the most innovative wrestlers of all time, a real trailblazer, so damn good. We will all miss you Terry. 🕊🩵
The master, the ultimate performer with a bulletproof back catalogue that could last a lifetime and the greatest pro wrestler that I have ever seen. Rest well, Terry. Thank you so much.
People remember him for all the hardcore stuff he did later in his career. It’s rarely mentioned that he was a brilliant technical professional wrestler for his time. He was the NWA World Champion back when that meant something, and that meant you had to work borderline face and heel, against all kinds of opponents. And Terry was as good as any from his era.
@@zlinedavidMy gal and I watched one of his matches from 77 against Harley Race when he was champ and she told me she couldn't take her eyes off the match.

Unfortunately, I only saw him in that neon match. Horrible . But Still 36 is young. Positive energy to his family. I can't imagine have to deal with this
@@kingkoldI’m a fan of Bray Wyatt, but I admit nothing he had done had clicked for years .. but the reason SO MANY people were always excited to see him return was because we had seen his early run with the Bray Wyatt character and we saw that when the creative and booking matches the brilliant talent that Bray had, it makes for nothing but great wrestling.
I didn't like Bray as a worker (I liked his original cult leader thing, but it got ridiculous for me the later it went.) but I don't think ANYONE would want that to happen to him or anyone.
Having lived near Amarillo my whole life, people around here know who Terry was even if they didn’t watch wrestling. His contribution to the wrestling business is every bit as legendary as people make it out to be. That being said, I had to watch my grandad deteriorate over the course of four years due to dementia until there was nothing left but a shell, and I find it a blessing in disguise that Terry found peace from that fate. I hate that he’s gone, but I’m happy he’s no longer suffering.
Terry's passing is absolutely heartbreaking. My heart goes out to his family and friends who knew him most and loved him dearly. The one upside to this is knowing that Terry's in a better place and is no longer in pain. His wrestling left him in chronic pain so with that being known I'm happy that he no longer has to suffer. I know that's a weird way of looking at the situation, however it's just how I choose to look at it.

RIP Terry Funk. I enjoyed watching him and his feud with Jerry Lawler in 1981 is one of my favorites. The empty arena match at the Mid-South Coliseum is classic.
I first saw Terry in 1973 against Bob Harmon, who later went on to fame in the WWWF as Beautiful Bobby. Fast forward about 25 years later Terry was in a Lincoln Park Michigan High School gym against Sabu in front of about 400 fans. They both gave 100% as if it were a ppv. Then, well into his 50's, Terry did a perfect moonsault of the top rope which totally popped the crowd. I wish I had seen more of him live. A true Wrestling God. One if a kind.
Terry Funk is a top 5 for me, easily. I loved watching all of the incarnations of him. He lived so many lives. He was tremendous and will be deeply missed. RIP.
The only person Jim actually hates and wouldn't mind dead is Russo. He would likely give the Hardly Boys a good ten minute eulogy that would make their dads proud.
It took me forever to get through this because I kept looking up the matches they were talking about. Terry truly was the greatest wrestler of all time!
As far as being the 'greatest of all time', Terry is certainly in the conversation. He reinvented himself countless times and he was such an influence on the business. And his mindset of wanting to 'give back' to the business made him very admirable. I am sad, that we shall never meet.
Even though I knew that he had been in bad health for the past few years it was still a shock to hear of his passing there is just something about guys like Vince Flair and Terry Funk that you genuinely don't think that they are ever going to die
I wish they would have talked about him and Foley vs The New Age Outlaws, simply because that's when I was first exposed to Funk, and Jim was there, and they had a nice program together.
"Thank Terry Funk for all he's done for this company (ECW) for helping put us on the map, for being unselfish in selfish times, for taking the young guys and showing them a better way.."~ Paul Heyman, Beyond The Mat
@EBC-ENT Are you just going to post this every time? They aren't just sports entertainers, Show some respect dude. Are you going to say that every time a modern pro wrestler dies? because they've all done some sports entertainment at one time or another. You will call Cena a comedy ent wrestler if he dies next week? And if you're referring to what Bray's Characters do as the comedy part, well a lot of non wrestling fans would call any fake wrestling comical Terry Funk included as it's play acting.
Jim, you getting the unedited version of the Memphis empty arena match with Terry vs Lawler is like finding the Holy Grail. Tell Brian that's how important it was
I remember watching that segment live on tv when Terry chased Jim around the studio. Wrestling back then kids looked so freakin real because a lot of the characters were so dang tough like funk. Greatest memories when I was young. Rest In Peace Terry Funk thank you for making my childhood/teenage years special ❤
Rest easy, Funker. You gave your body and your life to entertain others for 50+ years. You’ll be remembered for 10 times that long. The peace and comfort of the Almighty be with you, your family, and legions of friends and fans.
That one RAW which ended with Funk and Mick Foley sitting in the ring chatting with their masks off was one I won't ever forget. Also any kid in the 80's who collected MUSCLE figures may know that one of them is called "Terryman" and based off Funk, in the original Japanese series.
If you were a 70s territory fan, Terry Funk was there doing spinning toe holds and having bloody brawls. If you were an 80s TV wrestling fan, Terry Funk was there giving it to Hogan and Flair. If you were a 90s hardcore wrestling fan, Terry Funk was there swinging trash cans and performing moonsaults. For a lot of fans, Terry Funk was the wrestler they could most accurately say they grew up with. RIP
Jim cornette said chameleon when refererring to Funk's ability to blend within any type of promotion or product. That's one crucial aspect of what makes him arguably one of the greatest wrestlers and workers of all time. He was a great worker that was trained with an old school mindset and due to his time in the territories plus his masterful insights on how to read a crowd and giving them what they want without being out of gimmick/character over several decades is truly amazing. He was always either a top guy or had a meaningful spot in each promotion he was in, he never had a 'boring' match, there was always something either special, original, different in each of them. And finally he was a wonderful human being by all accounts, selfless, generous and kind. The definition of an Icon, RIP desperado, the last true Outlaw of Pro-Wrestling, and i mean in the most romantic sense of the term.
I remember there was a 24 hour mudshow stream on RUclips and they played this Funk commercial where he says Fight Forever and ever and ever and ever. I swear I watched that stream for hours just for the Funk Commercial. He's a GOAT, for sure.
THIS is why I listen to the podcast. I loved Terry Funk. I met him once and he was just the best. I got his book and he wrote a great note about The Sheik, I'm an old school Big Time Wrestling fan out of Detroit, and personalized it to me. It's a very prized possession.
I remember a match Terry had with one of the Moon Dogs in WWF and it was a count out finish and it was so entertaining that i can remeber it to this day, idk of another guy that could make a count out as entertaining as Terry did.
Funk. 🎉🎉💐💐
I loved the build up to that.funk pile driving him I loved cause I hated flair.
Great Angle! RIP Terry Funk
I'll never forget that I Quit match with Flair. It was that match that made me a serious wrestling fan RIP Terry 🙏
Funk wasn’t the best wrestler I ever saw but he was by far the most believable.
Both those feuds are overrated.
No disrespect to Terry(RIP), but those feuds never drew a dime.
@@danielburger1775you're the same guy who said Savage vs Steamboat was trash. Please grow up and stop trolling. Maybe get a girlfriend for once or at the very least just find a tall bridge

With all the Meltzerian bs, the Fact is that WCW/NWA LOST money in 89, ratings, ticket sales etc. went down, and no new stars were built. All in all, a disaster of epic proportions.
Jim probably knows this almost better than almost anyone except a few other guys but Terry was wonderful as a wrestler for so long even into his older age, the bumps he took, the skill he had, the matches he could put on, like omg
This was such a tough week for wrestling fans and the promotions. We lost a legend in Terry Funk and the unique Bray Wyatt. I’m really looking forward to smackdown tonight to see everyone come together to pay their respects to both of these men.
Thank you for using the word unique...... That's an honest take.
It's a very sad tragedy but it's quite annoying to see people say we lost one of the greatest wrestlers ever and they're not talking about Terry Funk.
@@johnjones8888 I understand what you mean and agree completely. Terry Funk is one of the best ever bray was not. No disrespect to bray its just a fact.
@EBC-ENT go away clown if that’s what you have to say. I did show respect by calling him a legend but bc I named bray Wyatt as also being lost that somehow means I have no respect for Terry Funk. Gtfoh you goof
@@florida_guy03 No. Bray is one of the all time greats whether you like it or not. His past few runs have been bad but the Bray Wyatt character is one of the greatest characters in Pro Wrestling. 'No disrespect, it's just a fact'.

"Jerry Lawler is a lover of chickens". Best T. Funk quote ever. Wonderful. lol
Funk and Muta feuding with Flair and Sting was my first true introduction to the Funker, and still remains one of my favorite feuds ever. RIP, Terry, you’re the man.
Funk v Lawler was such a phenomenal feud. Drew young me in like few other feuds did. RIP to the legend, Terry Funk.
This has been a long week for wrestling. RIP Terry Funk, you will be truly be missed. To Mike Rotunda, and Barry Windham my deepest sympathies on the loss of your boy, your nephew Windham Rotunda. I will leave it at that.
Good word's
Bcuz they're gonna see this 😂😂
Terry Funk walking through the crowd at November 2 Remember was insane as well he showed up in a graduation cap and verbally ran down Tommy Dreamer one of my favorite ECW moments ever!
This is an hour and 45 minutes of absolute gold.
After hearing about Terry's passing, I rewatched the Dark Side of the Ring episode about FMW. I love how he laughs at the thought of all the people who sat in the front row of an exploding ring match. Rest in Power, you beautiful Funker!
I immediately thought of Jim when I heard this news. I know his heart is broken as are all of us who are fans of "The Funker." "Middle-Aged and Crazy" forever. R.I.P. Terry Funk🕊️🕊️🕊️
Rey Mysterio is really the only modern wrestler who comes close to that.
Eddie Guerrero's first dark match was against Terry Funk and on his book he said that he was super cool and let him had some offense even if it was a squash match.
@RandalfElVikingo I had the Privilege of meeting Terry, and He was a Down to Earth Human Being. ( RIP) Terry Funk💟
I'll never forget Funk trying to haul back a broken Mick Foley from Hell in the Cell.
Funk’s program with Flair in 89 was amazing. Funk was also jacked during that run. He was a true legend.
I thought they legit wanted to kill each other.

Terry Funk was always someone I wanted to meet but I had no chance to as I live in the UK. A true hero, RIP 💔
I was blessed to see him a couple of times live. The last time was when he and Sabu had that crazy barbwire match. Rip king

My favorite Terry Funk line ever: "I can't make them believe wrestling is real, but I can make them believe I'm real."
I loved 1989 era Terry Funk the most. The J Tex stuff w him, Gary Hart, and Muta was awesome.
I know that's a weird way of looking at the situation, however it's just how I choose to look at it.
not weird at all. Very poetic to me that as our life ceases so does pain. R.I.P. Terry

RIP.
