Build a Better Backyard Bird feeder - Easy DIY Project

  • Being home more over the past month I've seen just how many birds visit our yard. Here's a simple bird feeder I made with some scraps of PVC and reclaimed cedar. I didn't put any finish on the ceder as I want it to age to the same gray color that it started out as. This was a fun little day project and a chance to use my lathe. I had a really hard time getting a good finish on the cedar...I think because it is so soft...but, maybe something could be better about my technique or tools. If you see something please comment below...I'm still relatively new to the lathe and could use the help. Thanks.

    wow super nice job, and that bird at the end is so beautiful.
    as you know here in Italy we are in lockdown since March and it's unbelievable how the animals are returning next to the cities! we have seen dolphins in venice, fawns next to Milan.... this is how disruptive is our presence

      Thank you, Alberto! It is amazing how much impact we have on the planet...seeing the dolphins would be really cool! We are enjoying watching birds at the feeder right now :-)

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  4 года назад

      Thank you, Huw...It was a fun little project, I hope you do make one...one thing I just did to mine this morning is drill a couple of small water drain holes...it's raining pretty good here right now. 1/8" is large enough to drain off water...but, small enough that the bird seed isn't falling through.

    Nice project. Regarding your question. Despite the fact that your tools might not be sharp enough, in some cases you cut the wrong way. You are going against the grain and you get a lot of tear out. But practise will get you there at some point! Pretty cool idea for a project though!

    • @StanCrafted
      @StanCrafted  4 года назад +1

      Thanks so much for the reply. I haven’t really thought about the grain as much in wood turning as I do in other woodworking. I will pay more attention from now on!
