Enjoying watching you winter for a bit in Northern Wales, now I understand more why I always see folks south-ish and central-ish. ;-) For cold feet - try some tips from backpacking. There are vapor barrier / water socks available, but most old hikers always swore by just getting plastic bread bags and putting them over their feet before putting on their shoes. There was always talk around the fire about if the plastic should be next to your skin, then sock, then boot vs sock, plastic, then boot. I've never tried either, but always enjoyed listening to the debate! But, plastic bags are easy to find and much cheaper and if they work, its simple to add whenever you go below. Trick all agreed upon was to put the plastic vapor barrier in place BEFORE your feet got cold. They work by keeping the heat in. They can make your feet sweat if it isn't very cold or you are moving a lot - which is where I think the argument about next to skin vs sock comes from!

We loved winter on the Llangollen and are considering doing it again this year. I can imagine plastic making feet sweat? Always happy to give something a go though. Nothing worse than cold hands and feet.
I get why people winter down south too, but I wouldn’t want to commute back to the North during the winter period.

@@NarrowboatLifeUnlocked good for you guys! The electric propulsion is still quite new so a bit of adjusting is probably expected, but i think a bit more insulation around the engine will sort out the noise. Glad Dexter is settling in and he is probably very happy his dads are back too! ❤️
Lots in this vlog, from cruising to holidays to boat work to back to cruising. Good team work between you both with van, meals, work, locks etc and then with help from friends and supporters etc. People do to you because you do to them, its all a big working helping each other team, so lovely to see. Hopefully we are now through the worse of winter (fingers crossed) Happy days to you three xxx

After having your boat blacked i wouldn't have thought it a good idea to have back in the water going thru' the ice. As your boat is only a year old, what type of blacking did the builders put on?

Loved the video. We are moored at Aqueduct Marina and it really is friendly and so well maintained. Woody who looks after the grounds does a great job and all the staff are so helpful. Like you Paul I love it when the daylight hours start to increase. Keep safe and well ❤️

FYI, get small tube of broad spectrum antibiotic ointment to keep on the boat for all scrapes and scratches. First, scrub wound w soap and water, dry, use ointment, cover with water-proof band aid. It’s an important precaution to prevent infection by bacteria, virus, or fungi that may be in canal waters and mud.

Great that you made it to Aqueduct in time and had a lovely holiday. The Diesel consumption is high but it always will be in winter.
I hope the fixes help. The bigger prop should be helpful. Try doing an audit on power consumption. If you have to run many electrical items they all add up. The inverter will draw power just to be on. The new generator will use about 1-4 Ltr per hour depending on load. The lock gate stove uses about 6 ltr a day if constantly on. Webasto can, depending on load can use up to 1 ltr per hour. So in a cold month 200 ltr of diesel just for heating. We’ve popped into a Marina for a few months. It’s remarkable the varied power consumption. We are on shore power and use between £1 to 80p a day. In January we used 150 ltr for heating and hot water. I hope the new mods work but it will massively improve after winter. Don’t get disheartened.
Hey Alan. We have never felt so relieved as we did when we got to Aqueduct. Unfortunately, the diesel consumption was at this rate through the summer too. Fingers crossed the new upgrades help.

Hey Crichie. It was incredible how much we spent in comparison to the old boat but yeah, put into perspective, it is definitely cheaper than a lot of U.K. homes. 😂. We went for 11 days. I seem to tan really easily and even when we cruise, just a few days of lovely weather and I am brown as a berry. Hope you guys are keeping well. Have a lovely weekend ❤️
The reason they used all that diesel was it’s winter with less sunshine to produce power from the solar ev panels fixed to the roof so the diesel was for a diesel generator to charge the main batteries which powered the boat propeller and powered to oven for cooking via an inverter

you seem to use a lot of diesel considering you have electric propulsion. I know the generator uses it but that is only to charge the batteries when they get low.Perhaps things will improve with a larger prop and a different motor?

Wow, still crappy weather, same here. Nearly 3 feet of snow that started last weekend and hasn’t gone at all, they are still trying to clear some of the rural and smaller streets. The only good thing is we didn’t lose power this time.

It was lovely to meet Anthony near the Venetian Marina just over a fortnight ago. We often stop off at the Marina to let our dogs have a run along the canal, as it’s roughly half way between our home in Milton Keynes and my father in law’s home in Anglesey, and not too far off our route. As he’s now 93 and not coping too well, it’s a journey we do regularly.
I noticed you were moored just below the locks when we did our return journey.
Hope the rest of the cruising year goes well for you both and that the work you had done improves you fuel efficiency. We changed the prop on our syndicate owned boat on the Norfolk Broads last summer and it’s definitely made a difference that we are noticing in our fuel bills. We were on the boat early January when the river levels were still high. We had to wear wellies to wade to the boat in our Marina and move the boat to a different location to load up our stuff. Despite that we had some lovely days cruising. Sunny winter days can be delightful.

Hi Paul and Anthony, we have had over the last three months nearly 4 months it has been raining it is been crazy weather. The heat is been around 30 to 40°C with 100% humidity. It’s not good for me because I’ve lost a leg above the knee and I can’t get heat out of my body. I also bought a camper so I can go camping with my two dogs but it’s been too wet , but anyway thanks for the videos. A great vlog guys, quite hilarious in places (not Anthony's finger injury), i have a question about the bigger prop. Is it bigger in diameter and if it is would it get damaged easier as it would be closer to the bottom of the canal. Im sure Oakums would have considered this. Hey guys. Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. I did actually laugh when I fell to be honest. The new prob should still be in the profile of the boat so should t get damaged. It will mean bigger surface area to move the water so hopefully make the boat faster and easier to stop with less power requirements. 🤞. That holiday was certainly well-earned. Watching you cruising (?) in the rain and cold made me shiver. Those muddy towpaths looked a sight, too. I now know for certain I could only be a sunny weather sailor. You guys are tough as nails. As an Australian friend says, good on ya.

Panic, at least you made it, wonderful help though but so bloody cold. You’re right, a well deserved holiday. Diesel is about the same price here in Australia, crazy prices. Hope you enjoyed your break but you came back to freezing sadly. Love big storms but you have to be away from trees. I think these storms may be the ones that brought the big floods. We were so relieved Pauline. So humbled by the offer of help. It was absolutely freezing. We have never needed a holiday so much. Diesel is crazy, but so is the amount we have been using. The last storm was the worse. Quite scary on the boat.

The cold weather looked miserable, and then a crash with a hapless boater, with Anthony looking like a stoic sailor with that hood pulled tight around his head reflecting on the vicissitudes of weather and untrained boatmen. (But then looking so nice and tanned after the vacation!). I'm really hoping your diesel usage has been sorted with the upgrade. It would drive me nuts to buy a new electric then spend so much on diesel!!!! I hope you are having a great weekend.

Hey Martin. We have gone from the vetus e line system to a 14kvA generator (previously 6), an engiro motor and an 18” prop( previously 13”) along with a 15kW inverter (previously 8)

On the bright side with the storms, you are not worried about losing roof tiles, having your garden shed blown over the fence onto next doors new car or your apple tree blowing down and demolishing your conservatory. The rain doesn't flood your cellar either and power cuts don't apply.

@@NarrowboatLifeUnlocked That was in the distant past. Many's the time I've laid awake in bed listening to the wind make the roof tiles do a Mexican wave the length of the house. Mostly without damage. Nowadays I live in the zone by the equator that includes the doldrums - we don't really get wind. Its strange, but you can actually miss a breezy day after a while.
Why so many major replacements on a brand-new boat? Do those parts usually wear out so soon? Hope they don't cost too much to replace. I was just dreaming maybe I can get a narrowboat as well. Now it seems like the upkeep is way out of my budget.

It's late so happy Saturday! 🙂 Today was an incredible 62 sunny degrees. The winter here has been as good as your winter has been bad. We had that frigid few days and then it went back to mild again. I'm with you about the sun. I get really depressed when it's too dreary for too long. 😾 That traveling in the rain and cold looked terrible and I'm sure it was! I hope that the boat work has been beneficial. I'm used car hunting and I found one and on the day I decided to go for it it sold. It was newer and more expensive than I wanted so I hesitated... so time to regroup! ❤ Have a great weekend! ❤

Great vlog, love the Llangollen canal, shame you couldn’t take your time. Hope the new system is much more efficient for you. we have an electric boat with a reflek stove and a Webasto, even when winter cruising, moving every 3 days or so, we use less than 200 litres a month. Do you have solar panels?

Pity you couldn't get a toroidal propeller. These are currently 3-d printed (plastic) and save lots of energy. Perhaps they are only available in the USA.

Also, if you are interested look up pod drives from 'cruising the cut' These save 13% of energy (10% through having no gearing + 3% by a reduction in friction) and have the advantage of no holes in the hull! Ferries now use this method of propulsion and stern thrusters are not needed as the prop can turn 90 degrees to the boat
We have seen the pod drives. I think Vetus are looking at this as a new way of propulsion for narrowboats. ❤️

Hiya both. What is your new set up now...Prop, Motor, Generator and inverter? Am thinking of getting my narrowboat built by Oakums as well in a similar design to your boat...(Planning on much smaller 6 inch wide skylights with toughened tinted safety glass and sliding insect screens (like in RV') to allow for even more solar panels.
Hey James. The motor I think is a 12kW motor. The generator is 14 KvA. The prop is 16” from the 13”
We had and the inverter is 15kW from the 8 we had. Fingers crossed. Like your ideas re the skylights. Have a great week ❤️

$100 a week on fuel.....so much for electric in the Winter. I guess it's good that Oakums come to you to fix problems but so many in such a small time is a little worrying for me. Their website is 12 months out of date offering the NEW 2023 Catalogue. When I move back to the UK in time for summer this year my plan is a new Widebeam but a 10ft so I'm looking forward to seeing what available when I get there... I'm also hoping to be at Crick this year so even more things to look forward to, I hope I get to see you two there.

I have a MiRider One. It doesn’t fit in the locker but I keep it in the bow with a lock on. The only bike that I reckon would fit is a Brompton but this was difficult to ride on the tow paths. ❤️

Is this high diesel consumption season related? I know my own solar is practically useless after September unti at least April. On that basis it comes as no surprise but is it an automated system where you cant control when that diesel power kicks in or without it do you lose propulsion instantly? Knowing how huge the lithium battery packs are in cars I imagine your system uses much smaller.
Brave move going electric but it seems very early days yet for everyday boating , dont be ashamed to rip it out and go old school if its still possible if you cant get the costs under control.
It isn’t seasonal related unfortunately. The generator is just over consuming. If we had the money, in all honesty, we probably would go back to diesel. Hope you have a good weekend ❤️

As an electrical engineer I question why your original motor/generator set up used so much fuel. I’m guessing the answer is that a power audit was never performed before the set up was chosen by your boat fitter. As an all electric boat with a power hungry set up inside, that original generator would need to run almost flat out when cruising. I would also question the suitability of your batteries. This doesn’t reflect well on your boat fitter, sadly. Have other electric Oakums boats got any issues, I wonder?
I feel sad for you that your dream boat now almost feels like a nightmare.
Hey Janice. A power audit wasn’t done but I guess until you live on it, it is quite difficult to determine consumption. We did have another guy who said that the generator was underpowered and consequently even whilst cruising, the batteries would deplete, so you may well be right. I can’t comment on the batteries as these were custom made. I do hope the new set up helps with the diesel consumption. Thank you for the insight, it really is interesting hearing this.
