American trucks are so big and capable these days that not everyone who needs a truck needs a full-size one. GMC’s 2017 Canyon can tow and haul the heaviest loads in its segment despite being the smallest midsize truck. Changes for this model year include a new V6 engine, an upgraded 7-inch touchscreen, and two new trims-the luxury Denali, which we tested, and the off-road All-Terrain.
That new V6 is a 3.6-liter direct injection engine that produces 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and includes a cylinder-deactivation system to improve efficiency. It’s available in almost any version of the Canyon, but always with an 8-speed automatic. A manual is offered, but only with the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 2.8-liter Duramax 4-cylinder turbodiesel with a 6-speed automatic offers 181 hp, 369 lb-ft and the largest towing and hauling capacities.
GMC’s IntelliLink infotainment system excels and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the Canyon now offers a Teen Driver system for parents. Read our full review: cargur.us/gB6kC
