I have a full set of caran d’ache luminance, Pablo’s and Holbein pencils. To me my Pablo’s are my absolute favorite. They never fail me. Perfect for details, but also for bigger areas. They blend like a dream.
Thanks for this review! Like you, I prefer a harder coloured pencil like Derwent Artists or Polychromos. I bought a small set of Pablos on a whim and 20 minutes after trying them I had ordered the full set of 120. I absolutely love them! The colours are gorgeous. As you said, they are a much lighter pencil to hold but I have gotten used to that. I would describe these pencils as firm rather than hard. These leads don't break and the application is so smooth. I'm an artist not a colourist, and you can use these on most papers, they are so versatile. The nearest comparison for me are the sadly discontinued Karisma coloured pencils. They were my first ever set of coloured pencils which I bought 17 years ago and I still have them! Like the Pablos they have a firm lead but when colouring they feel like a roller ball pen, ultra smooth. To get the best out of the Pablos make sure you have a very sharp point. It's a shame they live in the shadow of the Luminance. They are both equally as great, just different. Again, thanks for this review, in fact thanks for all the reviews you do, they are so helpful. And you colouring is beautiful!
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed it. These are such beautiful pencils. I know they aren't for everybody but I find them amazing. Glad to hear others are loving them too. 😃🎨👍
You won't regret getting the full set. There's marvellous greens and browns, and blues, some beiges you don't get in other sets. The colour range is altogether lovely and just a bit different to other sets. One of my favourite pencils.
I've been eyeing those colored pencils for a while. I'm just in between Faber Castell Polys and Pablos. Your coloring looks beautiful. I like the texture by not filling in all the white flecks here. Beautiful
Have you decided which one to get yet? If not, I urge you to look at the color ranges for both brands and really think about what you want to color! The Polychromos range is mostly made up of very saturated and bright midtones that are wonderful for bright flowers, colorful hair etc. The Pablos have lots of gorgeous natural colors that you'd use for pets, portraits or plants etc.
Thank You for your demo. I have a love hate relationship with these pencils. You've inspired me to give them another try especially since I have the forest girl coloring book. It won't be as lovely as your pic as your so talented but I'll give it my best.
I have missed you so much. I stopped checking in very often because you prefer your watercolors. And of course you use them beautifully. I hope you stay inspired to color with pencils. I loved this review..
I hope you do. I was just today looking at your Arteza unboxing and I had the same feeling: missed you; loved the video. It is very odd for me that though I am in corona isolation, I don’t have free time. Not only that, I’m retired. Take care; be well.
Oh so I'm not the only one with no free time while in lockdown, lol. We are obviously oppisite to everybody else 😂 The reason I've had no time is because I'm self employed and my business is selling things online. So, online sales went bezerk while in lockdown as nobody could get out to the shops.
Not a problem looks beautiful to me, I think your doing an excellent job, love these pencils, love everything about them, was really surprised with Colour with Claire review as she really didn’t like them, it just goes to show that people differ.. I always Google a pencil to find the best price. I bought mine in Australia from Amazon but was really annoyed as the seller they used sent the tin of pencils in just a thin grey plastic bag, no bubble wrap, no cardboard no protection at all and they were thrown around in the mail. I sent the seller a scathing review. But the pencils are lovely and I always put them in pencil cases,. I actually have a big pencil case from Amazon that holds my Luminance, Lightfast and Pablos and still has room for another set.
Hi Angela, sorry for the late reply. Wow, that sounds like a huge pencil case, lol. I do prefer to keep mine in the original tins as I love the tins themselves as well as the pencils. Except my prismacolors. I have those in a beautiful zip bag case as I wasn't too keen on the carboard box they came in.
Hi there Rebecca, hope you're kep ping safe &well .Enjoying your colouring as usual, like the look of these pencils ,maybe in the future!!Love the colouring book ,will have to look that one out . Hope your managing ok in these strange and worrying times. Take care and hoping Nick is still ok Xx
These pencils are pretty close to Caran d'ache Luminance pencils, I think. The difference is that the Luminance pencils are a little bit more lightfast. I figured that you would like them. They are very smooth.
Oh really? I still fancy trying those too. For some reason I thought they were a lot more expensive then they actually are. I had it in my head that they were around £270 for only 76 pencils but they are actually only around £175 (only, haha).
@@rebeccasartcoloringvideos7800 The price has gotten better on them and isn't quite as high as it used to be. They are definitely worth trying! In fact, they might be a little bit softer than the Pablos (at least that's what a lot of people say).
I'm back! Luminance pencils are predominantly a wax pencil. I love them, the pallet is different, but a little lacking in some areas. However, they are releasing more colours later this year to bring the set up to either 100 or 120, I can't remember which. The only problem is that they are my most expensive pencil and I feel I can't use them very often because of that. I'm daft. I like that slightly speckled look sometimes because it looks like coloured pencil work then, and I like it. That comes with the Derwent Artist range too, and I like those. I'm so glad you felt they handled well. It would be interesting to know what you thought of them in the same book you trailed the Holbeins in. Was that one of the Erie books? you did a library. I'm drawn to the Pablos for the colour range. They do have some nice shades. I reawakened my interest when I started to work with Dad's old Caran d'Arch Classicolor pencils (water soluble) and fell in love with the turquoise (which is the last pencil on the right in your tray I think, or the one immediately to it's left). Plus a bright but light pink and a bright but pale green which work together beautifully with the turquoise. I ordered some Prismalo pencils to try, they were supposed to be a step up from Dad's. But I really disliked them. I struggled to get colour and they were really hard. I've sent them back. I now have 12 Supracolor to try, but 12 is scant and I'm struggling to know what I feel about them. Perhaps I should admit that coloured pencils are my main love and stick with non-soluable. Thanks so much for doing this video Rebecca. My choice seems to be Supracolor or Pablo. I want a nice, big, full set in a tin as a lasting final gift from Dad. I have only ever had one full set of pencils like that, my Prismas. The rest I've bought slowly open stock and often don't bother with all the greys.
Sorry for such a late reply, Sue. I'm only just getting around to answer my RUclips comments. Yes, it was the Eriy Book that I used the Holbeins in. I will try the Pablos in the the same book too. Also, I'm I've started a colouring in Forest Girl with the Holbeins and I'm loving them. So I guess they are great on some papers. Also, I think it's also a matter of getting to know them. They are definitely very different to other pencils but that's a good thing, imo, as then there would be no point in buying different sets. I really didn't want to give a bad impression of them and I'm afraid I might have but that's just how I found them at first. Anyhow, I still need to experiment with the Black Widows and the Irojitens. I will get around to that .... eventually.
Thank you so incredibly much for the review! To me it’s the best I have come across and I don’t know how I didn’t see your video sooner! I’ve been thinking about these pencils a lot lately and wanted to purchase some open stock first. May I ask, can you suggest some colour blends ( 3-4 pencils)? Greens, blues reds, turquoise 🤷♀️ any blends would be greatly appreciated- I think it would be helpful to try a few blends instead of buying random pencils that don’t fit particularly well with each other ( I hope that makes sense! And you really couldn’t suggest a bad ‘blend’ - I also have a colour chart and comparison charts to look at ).😊 I really would be more grateful than you can imagine if you have time . I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and happy new year! Thank you so much!
Hi Paige, sorry it took so long to answer. I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I'm presuming when you say blend, you mean to make a gradient of light to dark. So I've picked some dark and lights of very similar colour which give a nice light to dark gradient. For the Turquoise, Malachite Green and Malachite Light Green For a warm green, Moss Green (dark), Khaki Green (medium), Olive Yellow (light) For a colder green, Dark Green (dark), Emerald Green (medium), Veronese Green (light) Blue, Indigo (dark), Sapphire Blue (medium), Sky Blue (light) Reds, Dark Carmine (dark), Scarlet (medium), Vermillion (light) You can even leave out the middle colours and just go from light to dark. Just fade one out and the fade the next one in with light layers. I hope that helps.
