Here’s Why the Corolla GR Is the Closest Thing to a New Subaru STI

- The Subaru STI is no more, but as you'll find out in the video today, Subaru owners should not fret. The latest GR Corolla has surprising similarities and fills the void left where the STI used to be quite well.

I just drove the Core edition of the GR Corolla. Wow, what a fun car! They were asking $38665 for it, I almost pulled the trigger.
Dang, not often you see a price close to MSRP.
I really appreciated the bike test, as well as the fact that you gave the cyclists out there a nice wide berth while driving by. Good looking out for other road users! Im shopping around as well as most wrx owners for the next phase since the new WRX is underwhelming in looks and STILL does not have a hatchback. Solid review!
Thanks for the kind words! Good luck on your shopping journey.
Except you could get a sti for the price it was advertised, and it was readily available at the dealers. Toyota makes a big mistake making this a limited amount, they need to mass produce it like the sti so it's everywhere
Are there ANY Toyota products that are readily available?
It's because it's something new and unique, sti been around for decades. After awhile gro corolla prices will come down. Stop crying
@@i.d.6492after awhile? They’re not making this car for they long lol
No they didn't since making it limited means that the value will remain high due to low availability, especially after people start totaling them. Got mine 2 days ago and had to wait on it being manufactured. Couldn't be happier with my purchase.
@@morstyrannis1951it is available but they want you to order it and it'll ship from a factory within a day. It's a scam because they can markup the price
Got mine 7 months ago and don’t you dare compare it to a Sti. I test drove a few and hated how every single one felt. The GR Corolla is better no comparison
It really does feel like my ‘04 STI though. Very similar in a lot of ways
Id say evo is a better comparison. When it comes to aspects he provided
@@rallysauruswrex I was test driving like 2017-2020 STIs. Can’t say on the 04. My uncle had one back in the day and it was blast.
Chill my man
I spent the extra $$$ and bought a Circuit edition. I like the niceties of the Circuit, especially the perforated suede seat inserts. My favorite color is the Heavy Metal, only available in the Circuit; the bulging hood and larger rear wing are cool. I like how the Circuit edition has "GR FOUR" stamped on the intercooler. I could afford the extra change, so why not go for something you really like? The GRC will be my car for the next 10 years. I received a forever powertrain warranty excluding clutch; 4 years oil changes/tire rotations and an 8-year/75k-mile everything else warranty, including the electronics. Price out the door: $55.8k. I considered the Type R, Type S and the Porsche Boxster GTS and 911T. The GRC was the least expensive option. I probably could get by with a Corolla Hybrid - the pinnacle of thrift & sound reasoning! GRC is a bit more exciting.
That’s a good deal for a car that will last you a long time and is fun to drive
Can I drive it
If you put your 29er mountain bike in front first and turn the steering upwards, you might find it goes in ok (maybe no wheel removal as well) I have found that to be the best way with various small hatchbacks.
Great review and love the practicality details. I was torn between this Corolla, the VA, and VB Wrx. I ended up giving up on finding a GR just due to the Core cost of 45K plus at any dealer and them treating them gold (just like the type Rs and Ford RS back in the day). I then drove the VB wrx and found it lacking in steering feel and the agony of a touch screen HVAC system. Found myself a super low miles 2020 Wrx Limited for much less than the base VB and seems to do all the chores of day to day life with some fun. If the GR didnt have the crazy Toyota markups, think this would been a solid contender.
I'd take gr corolla in the heart beat. Looks miles better than sti. sti and wrx both ugly especially from side profile. You need to slap so much after market rice to make it somewhat look better. Not to mention reliability is by far better than sti
Got mine 2 days ago and everything he says is 100% minus the rattles which I personally have not experienced.
The WRX not having a hatchback version is the sole reason why I don't have a new WRX today. It's the most frustrating thing for me as I really do like and need the cargo space for my next vehicle. Other countries (AUS and Japan) have the WRX Wagon, but not here. SO, unfortunately I have to buy a used 2017 or 2018 Forester XT to get my cargo space and Turbo. I'll take a look at this Corolla GR as well, but most likely it's going to be the used Forester XT until Subaru brings the WRX Wagon to the US, which most likely will not occur 😥
Im convinced that toyotas controlling stake in subaru is whats keeping them from dropping a new STI anytime soon. Artificially limiting the competition.
8:11 rollerblading on a canyon road driven by cars? Yeah that's a great idea, nothing could go wrong there.
😂😂😂
I wanted to see if my 29er will fit with wheel off because it looked like the passenger seat was forward with the commuter bike.
great video. mind blown by all the bikers in the absolute middle of the road out wherever you are LOL
Rude, entitled A holes for sure
How does this compare to your 04-07 sti?
You mentioned the 29er MTB - does that bike fit with the front tire off?
After previously owning an Evo 8 and 07 Hawkeye. I’m am fuc*in loving my GRC
Really rare car, you should keep this for a long time. I love cars that are unique. Glad you did the bike test. As a side note, I just watched your review on the Crosstrek from a couple of years ago, and no bike test. Do you think I could fit a bike in that without taking the front wheel off?
Also so many manual cars have Rev hang. It sure doesn’t make spirted driving fun. Does your GR have it? ✌️
Did you try putting in the bike front wheel first? i find that makes a difference since it can be turned 'vertical and get closer to the front seats...
I have a new Crosstrek coming next week, so lookout for a video on that coming within a month or so. I wasn't doing the bike test then but I'm doing it every time now! Thanks for watching!
for some reason i am not hearing any of the stock recirculator noise. just finished break in and have only done a couple hard accelerations but i feel like i cant hear anything lol. coming from a boosted brz where it was really obvious when boost kicked in and then bov venting afterwards. with the grc i cant really tell if im in boost. bone stock so its very quiet compared to the brz. when i test drove it i didnt have the loud exhaust to know when to shift lol. still gets me sometimes
Haha, stock forced induction vs aftermarket. Makes sense the OEM stuff would be much quieter. Hope you enjoy your new car! Seems like a nice progression to me!
I'm shopping for new cars, and my FIRST request is my bike can fit in the back....no lie. not much to ask and gives s great standard.
noce review of this Corolla GR
Glad it was helpful!
Toyota has its OWN rally and race history that has nothing to do with Subaru ....
@8:13 what the hell? lol i have never seen a roller-skater in the canyons before
Bro you and me both, I was super confused when I turned the corner..
Surprised it fit the smaller bike at all!
Yup and it has issues when you really push it just like the Subaru STI 👍 I always say the STI is an amazing STREET car. When you push it beyond that, that’s when you run into trouble and it appears the Corolla is the same way.
You picked the right thumbnail for this video. I drive a 20 year old Vibe simply BECAUSE I can fit my bike in the back of it without taking the tire off.
It's an underrated feature for sure!
I have to take the front tire from mine. Idk how you guys do it lol
Forged Carbon* roof not Carbon Fiber. Otherwise great review bro!
Is this model available with a 6 speed manual transmission for 2024?
Yes.
My husband has a 2020 STI. We test drove the core GR Corolla. He thought it was slow. I loved it! I want one. He doesn’t think it’s worth the mark up. I have a 2018 GTI. The GTI has a better quality interior. Do you miss your STI? How does it compare?
I really enjoy how the Gr handles compared to the STI. It has to be said too I worry about EJ engines long term reliability. So far the 3 cylinder in the gr has held up well
its more like a tamed down focus RS than it is a STI.
Dealer greed should always be a factor in reviews of this car
Looks wise looks like a computer 🐁
“Mountain bike”
Focus Rs gang
Am I crazy or does this look like northern california backroads?
At over $40k for a core model, these things are stupidly priced. I can get a 2023 Subaru WRX base model for about $30k. You get a WRX Limited model at about $45k. Knock this down about 10 thousand dollars and I would buy one.
Most people now will buy the automatic GTI it shifts faster than any manual and only the hardcore fanboys who love stick shift which is 15% of all drivers will buy this Toyota
no premium for 2023 model
This car is more like an MITSU EVOLUTION!!! plain RAW!!!
You didn't mention the elephant in the room which is the Golf R that, admittedly, costs more, but still comparable to a WRX-STI if it was still available. The Golf R is the sole competing AWD hot hatch in the category.
And VW dealers aren't, AFAIK, adding $15K to the full list price...
Not anymore. Sadly the GTI and R are being discontinued
@@Zack_Axelsadly? That is awesome.
Yeah but the infotainment in the Golf R kills it for me. I want real buttons and a real e brake. Dealers are also overcharging for it too
Can’t get past the whole 3 cylinder thing no matter the power
It's a beast, you should test drive one if you can find it. I bought mine 2 days ago.
give it like 2 years from now that screen and interior looks like shit compared to others.
GR Corolla is over $55k, I can buy a BMW F80 M3 for the price or a GR Supra. Or I can buy both a STI and EVO for $55k
More like 45k
@@chris5473 That's before markup. People pay $55k for GR Corollas a lot actually, depending on the trim. This video was wrong about that, you cannot get a GR Corolla for $36k, that just isn't happening.
@@coryhamelehle6439 No it is, they are easy to find and i saw a lot of them go for msrp.
So then buy juan of those
Paid $44k for my Circuit Edition 🤷♂️
Suburus just have shitty clutches to me. Every one i drove is just gross.
GR Corolla is massively heavy. And the engine will be strained being a 1.6 four cylinder turbo. The WRX would be better. 2.4 turbo.
What is up with all these cyclists, being in the middle of the road??
This is Lookout moutain just above of Golden CO. This is one of the most heavily traveled cyclist roads in the country. A lot of pro-road riders and teams train along this stretch. What this guy is doing is highly irresponsible (borderline criminal) for this stretch of road. Wipping over double yellows on bind turns into fast cyclist down-hill traffic (50 mph) via oncoming lanes would make of a quick jury trial. If you are from Colorado, you know this road and avoid it due to the blind corners and cyclists around every turn. If you want to carve up some canyons, there are literally are hundreds of miles of others great roads all around this area minus the cyclists. As a motoring enthusiast that enjoys the cayons, make sure to do a bit a research on where to drive next time...
@@jackd.c.5470 Thank you for the explanation! Different countries, different rules....I am from Europe, and if cyclists ride like this they would get fined heavily, as they pose a risk of being in the middle of the road...
But it's not even close. It's a COROLLA... i.e. a super cheap econobox of a car. Sure, they stuffed in a bigger engine, and gave it all wheel drive. But every other aspect is pure budget. The STI was no luxury car, but it felt like a $40k car throughout.
the 2007 sti, was the last year of the sti. this other crap is a joke.
That's a girls car. That's something I might . Mayyyybe buy my daughter to drive but you won't catch me in one of those
Lucky daughter!
Can I be your daughter and call you daddy?
Too small and the wow factor just isn't the same, the STI had a bullet proof MT and had more space
STi definitely more old school feeling and larger for anyone that has a family...
Glass engine though
Agree
@@christopherbassit2757 Not really, they're pretty solid IMO in stock form, people get 100,000-200,000 miles on them easy without issues with general maintenance. However there are things you should know when you start putting performance mods in. Most people I know that tune them buy them at the 100k+ mile mark, put a ton of performance mods into it without rebuilding the engine, without proper tuning or any research on what they're doing and wonder why the 16 year old engine blew up.
@@roygillotti4615 I’m speaking from experience, out of 5 friends who all had wrxs and STIs they all had catastrophic failures and went through like 7 motors. One friends mom had her outback clutch diaphragm rip every spline off from normal driving. None of them were pushing power at all. And my friend Neil opened a shop called NE performance that specializes in Subaru and he’s constantly flooded throughout the year. They have a shit community who can’t treat cars nice and on top of that they’re built like shit. Cool cars but there is 0 reliability. That’s why I bought my gr corolla 8 months ago and haven’t looked back since.
I got this sack for my daughter for Christmas since she's been wanting one to replace her Haan tote. If you could have heard her excitement. She was actually looking at the same sack to purchase. Winner, winner! #kisluxbag
