  • That one of the most colourful and influential producers and sound system operators started his professional career as a police marksman is perhaps less surprising in the context of Jamaican music than it might be elsewhere. Duke Reid certainly had a reputation that preceded him. Not surprising, a rather different side to the man is remembered by his widow in this 1994 interview. Mrs. Lucille (the “Dutchess”) Reid takes us through some of the key moments in a career which began with dances on Dummond Street and culminated in a string of undisputed classics for the legendary Treasure Isle label. Reggae historian Steve Barrow poses the questions while master lenseman Don Letts keeps the Dutchess in focus.

Good to see this interview with my cousin-in-law Mrs. Lucille Reid. I am grateful it was done... authentic, even if imperfect. Otherwise we would have lost this part of the story and invaluable perspective. My cousin Duke, the pioneer was a self-reliant man. He, like the rest of us are imperfect...Yet he, the talented artists, musicians and Lucille have done more for Jamaica than most... I proudly remember him and the Studio as a little one. His legacy lives on via his nephew Errol Brown who moved to Tuff Gong after Ms Pottinger took over Treasure Isle... The rest is history. The Duke and Duchess will live forever in the hearts of Jamaicans. They each died in peace and with Christ as Living Legacies and contributors to music lore and Jamaican culture. Ordinary people with extraordinary contributions. Rest well Lucille, we love you and Duke!

I attended a church on Bond Street that was across the street from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle Studio. I spent a lot of time in that area.
He died in 1975 when I was just a small child so I don't remember him clearly. I do remember Mrs. Reid. She still came to Bond Street after he died.
At one point they owned 4 large upstairs buildings (including the one where the studio was located) on the 4 corners.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, I recall seeing musicians coming and going from the studio. It was in the 1970s that the word got out that Judy Mowatt was there for a recording.
The studio part of the building was torn down in the late 1980s. The Reids contributed a lot to the Bond Street area. Their many businesses there made it a vibrant place at one time.

I can remember the first time i saw the Duke, he reminded me of John Wayne, he had his revolver on his hip and his rifle over his shoulder. And the name of his bar was, Dodge City. He was a real star

So much was missed in this outerview the clashes with Sir Coxsone Dodd. The making of U.Roy & John Holt Wake the Town the first night it was played. U.Roy selecting & deejaying Duke Reid Sound. The making of Alton Ellis. The selling of Duke Reid sound & music to Mr Chris Blackwell.. Why is it that I'm going into HMV record stores & seeing so much music made my Duke Reid on sale from Ska to Rock Steady. Bless up Mrs Reid God bless you.. You are a true foundation to the music we love Duke Reid R.I.P...

MrReddaifyable agree with you so many questions need to answered as far as compensation and royalties from the music that was created by these GENIUSES.

I would like to hear Sonia's version of events after Dukes death .
It's a shame the interviewer didn't prepare more for such a rare opportunity but nice to hear from the Duchess.

They don't prepare for any interviews, from day one people complain about their ramshackle interviewing methods yet they never improve, complete joke.

Award given to the Duke and Duchess. Definitely for some of the greatest musical productions ever.
Award given to Palm : Worst interviewers ever , you might even wonder if this is on purpose to prevent credit where there should be credit given. Or may bee they just don`t know anything about that music obviously. The wrong people at the right place

my dear marcia , see what your honesty got you , a lot of not nice comments , i am quite shure a lot of jamaicans like you have never heard of THE DUKE either , it's a feature of the entertainment business , the singers and proformers get the fame , and some true geniuses remain unknown , i recomend watching the documentary STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN , to get an idea of how it happens , lol .
