  • My LG dishwasher door hinge broke and now the dishwasher door falls down when opened. I was not able to get a replacement part right away so I decided to try and temporarily fix the dishwasher door using string.

Thanks. I just fixed my 9-year-old Frigidaire dishwasher this way. The set up is almost identical, and it broke in the same place. It's disgraceful that they engineer in such a flimsy piece of ( cotton?) cord to support that weight over multiple openings and closings. For replacement I used a length of lawnmower starter pull cord I had in the garage. It's a little thicker, but still fit over the pulley.
This is a shock-resistant cord that should last forever. If it gives anywhere, it might be where it hooks over the hinge fitting at the bottom. I wanted to adapt the existing plastic bushing/rope holder to ease friction-wear at this point, but couldn't find a way to do it with the thicker rope. So I just used my knowledge of nautical knots to tie a bowline where it attaches to the hinge at the bottom, and a double half hitch around the spring at the top. (Do it with the door closed, so you only have to stretch the spring a couple of inches to get a good level of counterforce).
I won't be buying the $17 replacement door hinge cord (for one side of door) available on Amazon, because I expect it is at least as flimsy as the original. I have more faith in my homemade fix, and won't be angry if it fails, as it cost nothing and I'll analyze the failure and design something better.
This is the fourth breakage I've had on this Frigidaire product, following a failure of the hot water control solenoid, control screen, display screen. The solenoid leak ruined a piece of the kitchen floor. I've also had early failures on my Frigidaire refrigerator (main thermostat) and range (burners not lighting and control panel scratching) purchased at the same time. Like American-branded cars they build in failure, or are just plain stupid--I suspect the former.
And if you bought your Frigidaire product because you thought it was "American made," think again. Although Cleveland OH and Missisauga ONT are on the name plate, it clearly states "Made in China." My next appliance purchase will probably be a Japanese or Korean-made product, after some research on longevity.

That's great. Thanks for sharing. Starter cord sounds like a good choice.

Thank you! I will be doing this but I have a Samsung dishwasher.
